we have selected Ron to captain
the blue team

and Melissa to captain
the red team.

SIMON: Hello, captains.

Ron, what's your game plan?

To really depend on my team

for us to push together
and come up with great ideas.

So, Melissa, you've been on
the losing team twice now

so is today the day
you're gonna taste victory?

That's the plan. I think I've
picked a fantastic team.

I think I know strengths

and I think I can put them in
key places

and together, as a team,
we can go to victory.

Each team will have to design
two horse-jumping hurdles...

..brought to life
with floral elements

using jumping idioms...

I can jump on that bandwagon!

(LAUGHTER)

..as the theme.

So in addition to the "jumping
on the bandwagon" idiom

we also have
"jumping off the page",

"jumping through hoops"

and "jumping ship".

Melissa, you get your

What if we create a phoenix,

like we're rising up
as we jump through the hoops?

I think red is so rich

and I would love to take
these birds of paradise

and have them
spray-painted gold,

and then on the "jumping ship"

I feel so strongly on this boat
I think I want it to look like

it's kind of sloshing
through the waves.

It's been a rough year and
we have ridden these waves...

KIARA: Ridden the waves,
for sure.

Lutfi, I think your strong suit
is solid design ideas

so I want you guys to help me
talk through that.

"Jumping off the page", this is
what I'm kind of envisioning.

What if we do
some kind of bird?

feathers go all the way down.

SARAH: What are you thinking
for the wagon

to give the concept
of "jumping on the bandwagon"?

It's musical,

it has that old stagecoach,
you know, cowboy kind of
thing.

Do you think it's stupid to
make a giant guitar here?

I love the idea of the guitar

and I think, like, the idea
of these boots,

like, kind of like
when you're like...

Jumping on.

Oh, that's a good idea.

I own a small
event design company

in Harlem,
New York City,

and I've been involved with
parties and events flowers

for over 30 years.

My typical client is
celebrity oriented

and parties
all over the world.

I'm definitely a very
competitive person.

Of course I want to win!

This is going to be
such a fun challenge, you guys.

Four hours to do four large
pieces on each of these jumps

and they've got to have
some scale to them.

- This is huge, this space.

SIMON: It looks like Ron's
blue team

is starting on the

as the base of the body
for the peacock.

It's gonna be so pretty.

working on the constructions

to support the design
that we're doing

because we're gonna go big

'cause if you don't go big
you might end up going home.

Captain Ron, tell me what is
your game plan?

For the "jumping off the page"

what we're doing
is a fabulous peacock.

What plant material
are you going to use?

I think for the body of this
it's gonna be about the roses,

pinks and peaches,

and then we also have those
beautiful phalaenopsis.

SIMON: Those apricot
phalaenopsis - incredible!

The first hour's frustrating

because it almost feels like
nothing has been achieved...

- Exactly.
- ..but it's the golden hour

because you are going to be
absolutely reliant

on those mechanics

to make sure that whatever
you create

looks fabulous for us to judge.

I agree 100%.

LUTFI: The monsteras could be
a good idea for the waves.

Tell me. Tell me, tell me.

What do you want done
with that? Spray-paint?

Yes! I love it!

MELISSA: Lutfi is such
an artistic

and incredible florist

so he's going to help oversee
the vision

and have it come to life.

So right now, immediately,

I gravitated to
the tropical leaves.

They're very hardy, they have
like really graphic shapes,

perfect for waves
jumping off the boat.

Usually three colors is,
like, a really good idea,

you know, more dimension.

It's gonna be amazing.
I can't wait.

I really want to see it, like,
the boat is going really fast.

Yes. Huge waves.

And you just see water
jetting out.

You have to be thinking
about motion.

- The motion in the ocean.
- ..in the ocean.

Ahhh! I got it!

For this "jumping off the page"

we're doing a peacock
made of flowers.

We're gonna be using
these carnations

but we're doing them
in clusters

and then more rows on top

and have this peeking out
in between

so it becomes
almost like frills

and sort of like
the feathering of a bird.

This OASIS in here
was a good idea.

Oh, my goodness, OASIS
in that is like everything

because we're here
in the hot sun

and, I mean, you want it to
look beautiful

but it's gotta last for the
judges to be able to judge
it.

Whoop!

So I'm using apricot-colored
phalaenopsis.

The stems,
they're really pretty.

We just have to finish it off
with a beak

so my wheels are turning,

thinking what I can do
to create a beak

and I remember seeing these
beautiful white anthurium.

- Guys.
- Yes.

- Beak.
- Oh, beautiful.

RACHEL: Yes!

SARAH: The tail looks amazing.
RACHEL: You like it?

SARAH: Yeah, I think it's good.
RACHEL: OK.

I love using dried flowers
mixed with fresh flowers

so on the feathers we used
a ton of pampas grass

which gave it that difference
in textures and consistencies.

- Almost done with the head.
- OK.

I would say we need to get off
the peacock, dude.

We're making it stunning but
look at the whole other side.

RACHEL: I know, I know, I know.

LUTFI: The white
is so important

because it gives that,
you know, foamy feeling

of the sea waves.

It seems like the foundation
of what I'm seeing as water

is actually really beautiful,

it has a lot of movement
and it's super great

but Lutfi is, like, struggling
with time management.

ELIZABETH: Yeah.

Actually, on both teams

it seems like there's a lot
of
focus on one of the idioms

and not the other.

We're focused the most
on showing

the choppy waters
and the boat going

and then over here,
"jumping through hoops",

we're really doing kind of
the rising from the flames

into, you know, the phoenix.

How does the phoenix tie in
to the theme

of "jumping through hoops"?

Well, I can't tell you
everything yet.

and then moving to

that you direct some of

when I was 16

and I ended up raising
my little sisters as my own.

first wave should come from.

However, time management
isn't always on his side

and at this point I realise
that time management

Like we're struggling to get
anything completed.

So Melissa has an idea

to incorporate a piece
about hope for the hoops

so yellow is a color
that I always think of

when it comes to hope.

I love tulips.

We have this lovely
yellow parrot tulip

but on the inside it has
these lovely orange lines

so that ties in
with the rest of the piece.

there's nothing on this cart

RACHEL: Ron.

in this challenge

we were looking for
the distinct story

displayed in each
of your idioms.

Melissa, you led the red team.

Tell us about your vision
and how it came to life.

We had "jumping ship"
and "jumping through hoops".

"Jumping ship"
I was trying to tell the story

of how rough 2020 had been

so tried to really create
the choppy waters.

Everything was stressing me
all the way out

but what you finally ended
up with looks beautiful.

The way that you guys have used
the monsteras,

very, very successful.

For me, the smokestack,
the chimney, became a chimney

when you did that inspired
little pooft of baby's breath

and phalaenopsis

but as I'm looking at your
"jumping through hoops"

the one thing that I find
extraordinary

is you didn't put anything
through a hoop.

I'd have made a sinewy garland
the same as you've made

but I would've threaded it
through those hoops

so it was literally
passing through the hoops.

So your work is exquisite

but I'm not sure
that they combine

to tell me the tale of
the idioms you were given.

Captain Ron, tell us about
your jumping idiom.

My jumping idioms are
"jumping off the page"

and "onto the bandwagon".

"Jumping off the page",

we wanted to create the garden
creeping around the page.

On the far end,
we have the peacock

that is really beautiful
and dramatic

because of the brilliance and
the magic moment of triumph.

For "jumping on the bandwagon",
you know, cowboy,

your best friend is your
guitar and your boots

and that's sort of
what we were creating

with the monstera leaves and
the moss coming through them

'cause, you know, those boots
have been lived in.

Dang, Ron,
way to tell a story, man!

MAURICE: Right?
That was like, sign me up!

I know, I'm like "OK!"

So, for me, the peacock,
well, that palette

is so me.

Those peach phalaenopsis,
the color, the beak - genius.

So beautiful.

The only thing, I'm
literally,

Unfortunately, from back here,

that does not translate

What I love the most
is you built a guitar!

I think last time I got into
my head a little bit

so this time I'm working with
some big, confident energy.

you will be designing

a pleasing, pop-up
flower shop presentation

that reflects your
personal style and persona.

Your flower factory on wheels

should fit
any customer's budget

two signature bouquets

that cater to two different
price points.

One is the grab-and-go

and the other is, you know,
"spoil yourself".

This mobile cart

should have your floral stamp
on it from top to bottom.

You will have two hours
to complete this challenge.

Truth be told, I think time
got in the way

of the last two team challenges

but he got saved
by his chinny-chin-chin

and he hasn't been
at the bottom

so he knows that everything
is on the line right now...

My vision for today's challenge

is like essentially bringing
that sexy sunshine

in a tropical, like, landscape.

The first thing
that I want to work on

is the branding of the cart.

It's a lot of the bulk
of the work

so I just want to make sure
that I'm comfortable there

and then after the cart is done

I'm gonna start working on
my bouquets.

Get my best side!

(KIARA LAUGHS)
So I kind of have an idea.

You know, we've been in
lockdown for so long.

So my overall vision
for the cart

is this is a flower cart for
people who are leaving a club

at 2am

and you want to buy that
person
you're with some flowers.

So this is just a piece
of old driftwood.

This is going to be
my disco ball

but really it's about
bringing joy to people.

And I'm also missing a little
bit of that joy myself so...

(LAUGHS)

..that's probably playing into
my design as well.

I'm almost 40 years old,

I have two kids and a husband,

and it feels like
the floral industry

was something that was out of
reach for me for so long

and I don't want to discount
myself anymore

and that's important
as a woman,

it's important
as a black woman

to be seen and, like,
represent other black people.

And I'm ready.

I ain't got time to think
about
what everyone else is doing.

I gotta get my stuff.

A general brand, I do a lot
with dried blooms

and things that are...

Truly, they're more
Australian blooms,

like this is a version
of a protea

and they're an
Australian native

but they tend to lend
really well to the desert

where I'm from.

I want to be sure

that my cart doesn't start to
look too heavy or cluttered

so I'm going to keep it minimal

and I'm going to hope
that I nail the challenge.

They were given a brief
to show us who you are

through this, like,
how you decorate your cart.

and so what are you selling

and how is it being displayed
for me to want to buy it?

So tell me about your vision.

I want you to be lying on that
beach with a margarita

and feeling that hot, like,
exotic weather of Honduras,

like that tropical moment,

so my hero flowers was like
the anthurium, the proteas,

everything that takes you to
a tropical feel.

What is your attraction
to tropicals,

where did that come from?

You know, I'm from Honduras.

I grew up in a place where I
would see outside my window

nothing but pure lush green

and I want to be able to
communicate that

and share that feeling.

So does still your whole family
live in Honduras?

My entire family
is back at home.

Do you get to see them often?

No, I don't.
They're very dear to me.

I just want to make them proud.

I've been in New York
for eight years

and it's been really hard
for me.

I had to leave my whole family
and friends behind.

If you're gay in Honduras
it's not safe

so I had to essentially escape.

We're a really
tight-knit family

and... (SNIFFS) ..and
I miss them very much

every single day,
every morning.

with regards

that's the curbside appeal

that someone's eye falls upon
and they just want to buy it

This color palette that Canaan
is working with

with the yellow, the orange,
to that fuchsia,

is actually kind of interesting

and he's tying it together
with the butterfly
ranunculus.

Mm-hm. I'm not 100% sold
on it yet. We'll see.

I need a third tie-in or two
to soften the blow.

'cause I want them to be at
their full potential.

So I'm from Georgia and we
like
to use our surroundings,

what we have, greenery,
like, Magnolia Small X.

I am very...quiet, unassuming

but over-the-top
when I need to be.

I was raised by my grandmother

and she taught me,
"Don't shame this family.

"Do what you gotta do
and show that you can do it."

That represents who I am
and I'm a Southern gentleman

so therefore you know I'm gonna
give you the best quality.

In addition to dressing
their cart,

we want them to create
two signature bouquets,

one that's the grab-and-go

and then one that's a really
lovely, lavish, spoil
yourself.

Hey, florists,
where are those bouquets?

I'd better see 'em.

SIMON: Is your grab-and-go
gorgeous?

Is your spoil yourself
spectacular?

One of the biggest mistakes
that folks make

when they're trying to
hand tie a bouquet

is they hold the stems tight.

The way to make
a successful hand tie

is to hold it as loosely
as possible.

So you're using your hand
as a vase.

That's exactly right.

And you just loosen a little
bit to get different stems
in.

Keep it loose, goose.

You're gonna need to tie it up
somehow.

I like to use this Bind Wire.
It's super easy.

That's gorgeous.

Then you're done.

The way I'm trying to make
a difference

between my two price points
is mainly about quantity.

- Whoo!

I'm already loving
what Lutfi's doing.

It's like the perfect kiss
of each thing.

Right now, I'm working on
my first hand wrap.

This is my fancier bouquet.

You know, I think my flower
choices are pretty on-brand.

You can, like, feel the warmth,
you know,

you can, like, see that
tropical environment.

These are pincushion proteas,
these are anthuriums.

Pampas grass, dried,
another dried palm.

So I think a lot of people
look and they think like,

"Oh, this is one flower. It
should be really inexpensive,"

and anthuriums are
notoriously expensive.

So this is kind of...

Or I think
sometimes people think

because it's dried,
"Oh, it's cheap."

Not the case at all.

I think that even though
my cart

is considerably more
minimalistic

than the other carts around me

it is something that this is
what I want them to see me as

so even if I'm not successful
today and I go home

it will have spoken
true to myself

and I'm proud
of what I created,

which is all I'm asking for.

Welcome to my tropical,
exotic land.

I really wanted to create
something

that was like a fantasy

and that reminded me
of my grandmothers.

I even named my bouquets
Rosa and Lila.

Let me show you.

First of all, she's the Lila,
she's the smaller girl,

I'm gonna hand it over to you.

- You can have her.

Oh, my God. Wow.

And this is Rosa, this is my
grandmother, essentially.

She is worth a lot of money.

You need to have the coins
to come and get her.

Elizabeth got the cheap one,
huh?

ELIZABETH: Wow!

At least she got one.

MAURICE: There's like an
effortlessness to this design

that really makes me happy.

While it's kind of busy
and wild

it's very contained
and pared down.

For me, I think the bouquets
are beautiful,

I think your beach fantasy,
that is my personal fantasy.

I would like to be
on a beach...

you've branded your cart

and transformed it to tell us
who you are as a florist.

This is an after-hours cart,
like this is after the club,

and you want to buy that
person
you're with some flowers.

So this is really
about a joyful moment.

I've kind of created
a disco ball up here,

kind of representing being out
and having a lot of fun,

having a dance.

I used to be
a professional dancer.

- Oh!
- Ooh.

I was a cheerleader in the NFL
for eight years.

- Stop it!
- Yeah.

- You had Maurice's dream job.
- I can walk, right?

- I can give a good walk.
- Let me see your walk.

I think that the palette is
really unique and interesting

which is why the things
that aren't working

- are really stressing me out.

On your grab-and-go
and your spoil yourself

those were made
with a hard hand.

Everything is being squeezed

Yep. I totally understand

Had you taken that tape off

it would just open up
and fly

and then you would have
your little bag here

- and it would look gorgeous.
KIARA: Mm-hm.

about your floral pop-up.

This is kind of just
my overall aesthetic.

I love being able to pick the
color palette that I would want

if I were going to buy florals.

A little dark, a little moody,

it has different textures
throughout it,

different layers.

And so this is me.

So I think I'm getting to know

that you're
bo-hoey desert wedding.

Yes, I think so.
That's what I cater to.

So, Melissa, tell us
about your bouquets.

So here I have
just a few blooms.

There's a little piece
of dried,

there's a little greenery.

And then this is my
bad and bougie

with a couple of anthurium

and the dried pieces
and the pampas.

I love this palette,

the rusts and the dark tones
and the pale tones.

But for me also
it's a little bit of a waa-waa

because you didn't give us
a more completed story

of a pop-up.

SIMON: It's a gorgeous,
exquisite color palette.

I just need more of it.

abundance of florals.

When you come up
and you want flowers

you can say,

"I want that..." you know,

and I can pull it together
for you really quickly.

So, wait, those are the
flowers
that you're pulling from

- to make the bouquet?
- Yes!

I'm obsessed with that!

CANAAN: When I look at flowers
and palettes

I usually start with a rose

and I kind of bring
something else into it

'cause I want it to make me
sing or make me feel orgasmic,

you know, I'm seeing
these colors come together.

So what did these roses...
How did they sound?

(SINGS HIGH NOTE)

- They sung to me.
- OK.

For my grab-and-go

just a little, little
something.

I didn't want it too big
but also I wanted to make sure

that when you're at my cart

you have the access to go
to grab more

to add more money to it.

Make that money.

just giving them

that they need
