Steve,

and I'll be your guide tonight.

But be prepared for
the unexpected.

And the unexplainable.

ago,

A great tragedy occurred on this
very accursed spot.

Prior to the French and
Indian War, this area used to be
a rendezvous point.

Twice a year, fur
trappers and traders would meet
and exchange goods.

But on one particular
autumn evening,

a brisk evening much like
this one, things went awry.

The trappers were trying
to make rendezvous before
sunset.

As the last of the sun
fell below the horizon,

the trappers made it to the
encampment, only to find
something amiss.

All was still, and the camp was
silent. Except for the crackling
of the fire.

When they arrived, the
camp was deserted,

but there was evidence
that it had been inhabited only
a few hours ago.

Not a soul was present,
with only the fire to tell its
tale.

And that tale, being a
pot of overcooked beans.

Having walked all day
with empty stomachs,

even a pot of overcooked
beans looked inviting.

What happened next was
nearly unspeakable.

The trappers were in a
state of shock at the thought of
such brutality from

the very men they broke bread
with yearly.

On regain of their
senses, they desperately fought
for their lives,

but the savage surprise
unleashed by the traders
was too much to overcome.

The tired group of
trappers were extinguished,
but not before one of them,

in a defiant act,
plunged his knife into the
eye of his attacker.

That attacker was the
leader of the traders' little
bunch: one Beauregard the Red.

After feasting on the
flesh of the trappers,

the traders, intoxicated
with blood lust, turned
on each other,

and with a primal rage
almost to a man, they
wiped one another out.

There was, however, one
survivor left to tell the tale.

As he wandered through
what remained of the night's
carnage,

he was both confused and
bewildered, only recalling
glimpses of what transpired.

Thanks to that poor
repentant soul, we know
the dreadful actions

that occurred on this
site some 13 score ago.

This investigation is now open
and is being recorded. It was
near this site,

260 years ago, that the
lakeside massacre occurred.

The site that you see today was
built in the 1900's. But back in
the 1880's,

this site was essentially a
shanty town for poor immigrants.

In the early 1890's, the
estimated population of the
immigrant workers was

more than 1,000. At first, local
officials basically turned a
blind eye

to what was happening
on the other side of the tracks.

Among the rows of tents
and hovels was an even seedier
side.

There were tin shacks for
gambling, tin shacks for rot gut
liquor,

and even tin shacks for
prostitution. Village leaders
tolerated this as long as it was

kept out of view from the
townspeople,

and as long as they got a cut of
this illicit trade.

That all changed in 1895.

After several years of mild
winters, mother nature returned
with a vengeance.

In early October, over a foot
of snow fell, and no one was
prepared.

Everyone was cold, wet,
hungry and tired.

No one knows exactly what
happened, but on October 17 of
that year, violence erupted.

The villagers tried to
stop it, but were met
with resistance.

When they entered this area, two
of them were eviscerated. The
villagers surrounded them and

let it play itself out. For
five days, the sounds of the
dreadful violence

filled the air, but on the sixth
day it stopped and
everything went silent.

Villagers moved in, and when
they did, they saw signs of
violence

so unimaginable that it had -
it was like they had
stepped into hell itself.

Some of the villagers blamed it
on a questionable provenance of
cheaply peddled liquor.

Others attributed the carnage to
God's wrath in response to the
sinful activities

that were taking place in this
underbell- belly of poverty.

Ultimately it was all swept
under the rug. All traces of the
immigrant camps were removed.

The site was cleaned up and was
transformed into a park and
fairgrounds.

No actual account of
this story has ever been
recorded in print,

but a local historian has agreed
to meet us here tonight.
