ASHLEY: This is the
end of the road.

CHASE: We are headed
to meet an author.

ASHLEY: Let me guess. Horror?

CHASE: Horror and fiction.

[laughter]

ASHLEY: Let's go see
this house of horror.

CHASE: "Accidental
Evil," Ike Hamill.

[screams] I hate you.

I hate you!

There's a lot of
underground stuff.

There's a lot of
power underground.

It will be a little
like a treasure hunt.

Oh, is it under that platform?

Heavy rains from the South.

A big tree just fell on the
other side of the property.

And if we don't get
out of here now,

there's a chance we can be
stuck here with no power.

CHASE: Before, this cabin
didn't have a bathroom.

But now this camp will have
one of the nicer bathrooms

we've ever done.

That is crazy.

[laughter]

NARRATOR: In a place
called Vacationland...

CHASE: Time to get to work.

NARRATOR:... there are
thousands of cabins that have

been unchanged for decades...

Everything must go.

NARRATOR:... all over the
great state of Maine.

CHASE (VOICEOVER): I'm
Chase, and I lead the team.

Ashley's my sister.

She's also the designer.

Ryan's my brother-in-law.

He's my voice of reason.

Dixie and Jedi can handle
any jobs we throw 'em.

Nice!

- Wow!
- What?

CHASE (VOICEOVER): Our crew
is the best at what we do.

- Nice job on this one.
- Cheers.

CHASE (VOICEOVER): We're all
best friends and we love it.

[ominous music]

ASHLEY: This is the
end of the road.

CHASE: For the van.

This is crazy.

ASHLEY: For the van?

CHASE: Yeah.

Keep out.

ASHLEY: Looks like this
is far as we're going.

RYAN: [laughs] Honey,
I got your lanterns.

Fire 'em up.

Put Ashley in the middle?

Oh, this is a first.

Chase said he was gonna
pick us up at night.

So we figured we'd be out at
the bars having some beers,

having a good old time.
CHASE: Ladies first.

ASHLEY: What's going on?
Can you tell... tell us this?

But nope, we're
tromping through the woods

to a new cabin.

What is wrong with you?

Chase, we're in the middle...

Middle of summer.

Longest days of the year.

Yeah, longest days of the year.

And you have us here in
the middle of the night.

CHASE: We are headed
to meet Ike Hamill.

He comes here to write.

He's an author.

What does he write?
Let me guess.

Horror?

CHASE: Horror and fiction.

[laughter]

I'm not a fan of the dark.

I'm not a fan of walking
down dirt roads in the dark,

especially with these two.

She doesn't even like
sleeping in the dark.

[laughter]

She needs a nightlight on.

CHASE: His father owned it.

His father's in poor health, but
Ike comes here a lot to write.

He gets a lot of inspiration
from where he writes, so...

RYAN: [laughs]
CHASE:... I figured...

ASHLEY: I can see that.

CHASE:... it'd really set
the mood for the camp.

But I can see how
this would be...

Creepy? Yeah.

...Inspirational.

If you'd scream,
nobody would hear you.

Yeah.

This is how all
horror movies start,

just exactly what the
three of us are doing.

[laughter]

- Oh, there's the camp.
- Yeah, you're right.

ASHLEY: Oh, my gosh.
How's it going?

Hey, there. Hey, guys.

RYAN: Hey, how's it going?

Hey there.

My name is Ike Hamill,
and this is my family's

camp in Mount Vernon, Maine.

Oh, what is that?

Is that a wolf or a dog?

[laughter]

IKE: That's Finn.

ASHLEY: Hi.

You'll protect us.

IKE: Go see 'em, Finn.
- Hi, Finn.

Hi.

- Go see 'em, Finn.
- What's up, buddy?

Heel. CHASE: Oh, my god.

He would have scared you if
there wasn't any lanterns.

What a cool camp.

- Yeah, thanks.
- Yeah.

We show up in the
middle of the night to get

a really good look at it, huh?

It's a lot of fun
that Chase brought

everybody here at
night, where you can see

the creepy side of the camp.

Because in the daytime you would
never believe that, you know,

a place like this
could have this,

you know, kind of
ominous feeling to it.

So I'm glad everybody gets to
experience that for themselves,

and really see what
I see in the place

when I sit down to write here.

How do you write?

Do you just write with
pen and paper or...

I usually use a laptop.

I like to look out over
at the... at the water.

So I sit in what's
now a bedroom.

But, you know, it'd
be better if it

had the... floor to ceiling
views would be awesome in there.

You never know what's at the
end of a dirt road in Maine.

It could be anything.

That's one of the reasons why
Stephen King's books are so

popular, and one of the reasons
why I'm so inspired to write

about Maine, is that
Maine is full of mystery

that just doesn't seem
to belong anywhere else.

The feelings that
I try to capture,

the nighttime creepy
feelings, that's not a feeling

that my family shares.
[upbeat music]

You know, they think of this
place is just a... a beautiful,

wonderful place to
come out and enjoy

everything Maine has to offer.

I like it when it's raining.

I like it at nighttime.

And I like to even drop in
here in the snow sometimes.

This camp, my dad bought
about 25 years ago.

And he bought it because his
parents lived up the road,

and he wanted to be able
to take care of them.

He initially planed
to, like, fix it

up so he could live here
three seasons... have,

like, a three season camp.

But, you know, stuff
gets in the way.

And now he's recovering
at my house from surgery,

and we've told him...
You know, he's trying

to recover his ability to walk.

And we've said, you know,
we're going to fix up the camp

for him so that he'll have a...

Oh, awesome.

Eventually, you know,
finally see his dream of...

Yeah.

...Of being able to live here.

So I guess what would it be
you're looking to have done?

We'd like to expand it.

The property already
has septic and water,

but it's not hooked
up to the camp.

CHASE: Oh, wow.

So we'd like to get a
kitchen and a bathroom,

which would be great.

CHASE: I see you've got
a few monstrous pines

leaning over the...
IKE: Big old pine trees.

CHASE: [laughs]

Big old pine trees.

Lost one a couple of years
ago that took out the roof.

But we... ASHLEY: Oh, really?

IKE:... we rebuilt after that.
Yup.

There's a lot of natural
stone around the property,

so it'd be cool if you guys
could do something with that.

RYAN: Yeah. How big is the camp?

I think it's 320
square feet right now.

Yeah.

We'd like to... we'd like to
double that, if we could.

And get it more
accessible for your father?

That would be
perfect if we could.

Yeah.

So he can actually
come out here.

And do you have an amount
in mind that you'd want to...

Yeah.

We've got about $50,000
we could put to this.

Yeah.
- OK.

Realistically,
it's probably about

eight weeks worth of work.
IKE: OK.

Sure.

We could live with
that, for sure.

CHASE: Yeah.
- So I've got the keys.

Wonderful.

Awesome.

All right.

My dad watches the
show constantly.

And having this camp
turned into the dream camp

that he always dreamed of,
it's right now his goal

of regaining his strength.

There was a lot of dark
moments where he was,

you know, in recovery and
he was trying to, you know,

find a reason to dig
deep and endure the pain

and get back on his feet.

And one of the big
motivators recently

has been thinking about
this camp getting redone,

and turning it into the... the
place that he always wanted.

ASHLEY: Let's go see
this house of horror.

RYAN: House of horror.

[laughs] It's not
that scary yet.

ASHLEY: Hey, look.

That's a cute...
Look at this light.

RYAN: "Accidental Evil."

Ike Hamill.

I like that.

Ooh.

ASHLEY: It's small.

CHASE: This doesn't
seem horror-ish to me.

RYAN: Well...
- Yeah.

If you shut the lights off
and listened to everything

outside it would be horror-ish.

So that originally
it was supposed

to be a screened in porch
and then they turned

it into the master bedroom.

So, like they were
saying, they would

love an addition
off the side to get

the master bedroom over there.

So one bedroom, but bring
the screen porch back.

Yes.

I don't think... I don't think
they ever had a screen porch.

ASHLEY: Let's check
this room out.

RYAN: So double the size.

Oh, it's nice out here.

Imagine if...

[chainsaw sounds]

[laughter]

Why did you did that?

- I didn't do that.
- You did.

Don't lie to me.

I didn't do that.

How would we have done that?

One of you did that.

RYAN: I swear to God
I didn't do that.

ASHLEY: Yes, you did.

Ash, I swear on my
life I didn't do that.

I think that boombox must be
connected to the lightswitch

or something.
- I'm over this.

Don't! [screams]

OK, that's a sign. Let's go.

[laughter]

I'm out of here.

On the inside of the camp we're

going to rearrange it so that
we've got a new master bedroom

in the addition, a
new large bathroom,

and we're going to take
the existing bedroom space

and turn that into screened in
porch overlooking the stream.

I've seen enough. Seen enough.

Seen enough.

CHASE (VOICEOVER): On the
outside of the camp we

are going to double the size.

We're going to put
in a new addition.

We're going to take down
some of these trees that are

leaning too close to the camp.

We're going to
connect up the septic.

We're going to
connect up the well.

And, you know,
that will probably

involve new windows, a new
roof, and possibly new siding.

ASHLEY: I've seen
enough for now.

We can come back in the daytime
when it makes sense, when

most normal people do this.
RYAN: No.

Chase didn't tell you?
We have to do this one at night.

[upbeat music]

CHASE: We are at the
Hamill camp today.

Good to show up with the
guys today in the daylight,

see what's going
on with the camp.

RYAN: Awesome.

Way... way more inviting
during the day, isn't it?

CHASE: Camp during the
day is way less spooky.

There are some good sized pines.

But other than that,
there's nothing

too scary about the place.

So what are we
doing to this one?

RYAN: Try to stay alive, Dixie!

CHASE: It's pretty small.

It's a pretty easy
demo day, but kind of

get an idea of what's going
on, get it cleaned out,

and make a plan.

Oh, it smells good and clean.

It is.

Oh, man.

No mouse poop or pee.

ASHLEY: In know.

This is kind of a nice one.
- Mike?

Yeah. That place was disgusting.

- Real nice.
- This is refreshing.

I was nervous coming out that
the building would be scary,

we were missing stuff.

Place is in great shape.

Place is tiny.

The hardest part
about this job will

be replacing the outhouse
down by the water

with a full indoor bathroom.

Other than that, it's gonna
be pretty cut and dry.

All right, let's do this.

CHASE: Yeah.

I want to get out on a ladder
and get those boards out.

ASHLEY: OK. Dogs out for demo.

Safety first.

Sink or swim.

I'm almost on my summer weight.

Yeah.

You're not, though.

RYAN: [laughs]

CHASE: Oh, you can see
where the roof was rebuilt.

They did a really good job.

RYAN: You're getting
new floors, right?

Yeah, of course.

[music playing]

So these are nice chairs.

The leather on them
is really nice,

except for there's four of them
and only one of the leather

is bad on the seats.

So maybe I could find
someone that does it

or maybe I can do it.
- Yeah.

Who knows?

No, you could definitely
find the leather.

You have all the tools.

There's not a lot
left in the camp.

So something that
was here before,

it would be nice to bring it
back in and be able to use it.

Watch your fingers.

Although we are going to have
to use those awesome kitchen

cabinets.

A lot of camps... a lot of
the problems that they have

is mice and rodent infestation.

So what's good about these is A,
they're real easy to clean out.

And B, they're metal.

So a lot of times the
critters do not like it.

So, you know, they're
all in good shape,

so I don't see why
we couldn't maybe

spruce them up with a new
counter top and reuse them.

[music playing]

We're back at the Hamill camp.

And the sun is out,
the lights are on,

and it's not as scary as I
thought it was going to be.

You know, I was kind of
worried that the dark

was going to be hiding some
stuff, and it looks good.

It wasn't scary at all today.

Well, I take that back.

[screams]

[laughter]

I hate you.

I hate you!

[laughter]

Not cool!

I can't...

That's awesome.

That's not awesome.

Did it scare you?

Yeah, of course it did.

Very easy to scare my wife.

You know, we have a
lot of fun with it.

She's a good sport, so it's fun.

[dog growling]

CHASE: Today we basically
just cleaned out

the interior, you know,
pulled off any paneling,

got all the walls stripped back.

Ew!

ASHLEY: Oh, that's
a whole ant farm.

CHASE: That's a colony.

There were some carpenter
ants in the wall.

No camp is perfect.

This one had a little
bit of carpenter ants.

I've already called
the exterminator.

They're on their way at some
point in the near future.

We had Harry from
Pinnacle Tree out today

to take a look at the trees
that needed to come down,

the monster pines.

That's the priority right
now, is to get the trees down.

- Oh, OK.
- Yeah.

So obviously that one
right there's got to go.

Uh-huh.
- OK.

So down, down, down...

- You got it, buddy.
- No problem, buddy.

- Likewise.

Yeah, you too.

ASHLEY: A lot of these
big, huge, old spooky

trees are going to collapse
on that camp any time.

Once Harry cut them down,
maybe we can do something

with some of the wood.

[chainsaw buzzing]

RYAN: They're going to limb
up two trees to the left side

of camp, and they're going
to drop the big pine tree

where our addition needs to go.

Thankfully, the
addition is going there.

That tree would have to
come down either way.

It's leaning right
over the camp.

This is my type of demo.

Yeah.

Nice and easy.

I didn't even sweat once.

No [inaudible] necessary.

RYAN: That's a first.

This was still nasty.

This was not that nasty.

Ants.

We found ants.

We found issues.

Oh, you have a few ants.

Nastiness... this
was like, a two.

DIXIE: No.

I'd say it's like,
four, 4 and 1/2.

JEDI: I'd say two.

- I'm going like, two.
- Yeah!

We're back at the Hamill
camp in beautiful Mount

Vernon, Maine, this morning.

Hey, you guys did a... you
guys are kicking butt today,

just in time for the rain.

Justin, BT, Jason and
Nick have done a great job

today jacking it up.

As you can see, they've
been going off these posts.

They've already come
up about two feet.

We're making a
plan and getting it

high enough so Walt's
dad can walk in safely

and get out safely.

He's getting older.

And one of his last wishes is
to get over to camp and use it.

And we're going to stop it when

it's level with the driveway?

Yeah.

I think we pretty much want
to come down, like, to this,

right here.

Maybe a little...

I can put a string level on it.

Yeah. Maybe a little bit lower.

Yeah.

This is the scariest
part of the whole job.

This is a most precarious
time of the job.

It's a little bit hairy.

Everyone's a little
bit on edge, so we've

got to go slow and steady.

Two of us on each
side, and one guy

can float around when
someone needs something.

Nobody go underneath
the camp here.

Yeah, slow and steady.

And the big thing is not
to get it to tilt too much.

We had to bring the camp up
quite a substantial amount.

We got our beams suspended
where they're going to go,

and now it's time
to set it down.

If it doesn't come
down perfectly,

it can throw everything
out of whack.

How's everyone looking?

RYAN (VOICEOVER):
Windows can break.

It structurally
could not be sound.

A lot of bad things can happen.

Ready?

As soon as this is
back where we need it,

there'll be a lot of stress
off the guys and it's go time.

[creaking]

She's creaking.

This is the scariest
part of the whole job.

We're nearing the end of
week one at the Hamill camp.

This is the most
precarious time of the job.

bit on edge, so we

got to go slow and steady.

All right, blue's coming down.

We had to run the camp up
quite a substantial amount.

We got our beams suspended
where they're going to go.

RYAN (VOICEOVER): If it
doesn't come down perfectly,

a lot of bad things can happen.

I'm going up.

Who's in this front corner?

Yeah, baby.

RYAN: All right.

I'm free, Justin.

RYAN (VOICEOVER):
Luckily, we took our time.

We were able to lower
the camp 13 inches

without anything coming apart.

Nice job, buddy.

RYAN (VOICEOVER): That camp
had to go up really high.

But when it came down, it
inched over a little bit.

But it looks great.

[music playing]

The guys got a new platform
framed up and posted.

That looks awesome.

This addition is going to double
the square footage of the camp.

We built the base, got a lot of
good sturdy supports under it,

and now it's time to
start building the walls.

Hopefully, by the
end of the day today

we'll have the three
walls built and we can

start working on the rafters.

[music playing]

Hi, Justin.

JUSTIN: How you doing?
- Good.

How's it going today?
JUSTIN: Good.

The place is huge!

JUSTIN: Getting there.

This project is at
the halfway point,

so this is when I
start to get involved.

I was just talking to Heidi.

Since he's an author,
I was thinking

it would be cool to make
some sort of bookcase.

Have you guys seen
anything around here

cool that you can
think of that we

could make a bookcase out of?

Heidi and I had this idea to
make a custom bookcase for Ike.

And then Justin had
this surprise for us,

and they're the shutters
that came off the camp.

Justin, look at you.

Right?

I don't know if you'd want
to put something like this,

you know, or just do whatever.

Ike had all these books
just sitting around the cabin.

I think it's going to love it.

Now he has a place where he
can display all of the work

that he's done.

[music playing]

So this right here
was the original camp...

16 x 24.

What we ended up doing
was jacking it up,

reposting underneath
this in order to get

prepped for the new edition.

The new edition is 16 x 20.

And instead of
running it parallel

we did it perpendicular in order
to keep the same roof pitch.

The addition is going to be
the bathroom and the new master

bedroom, with the screened-in
porch on the front

of the original camp.

Roof is the main
goal, main concern.

So it's... it's time
to get roofing.

DIXIE: Had a little
bit of roof trim

to do when we first got here,
some rake pieces, some fascias.

Once we got that on
it went fairly well.

Chase is getting the valleys
ready with ice and water

shield.

And I'm just up
here waiting for a...

Oh, look.

There it is.

Right now, we've got all
our fascia, all our trim,

all our rake pieces on.

We're ready to throw
some drip edge.

I got the paper down and now
we're ready for shingles.

[music playing]

Getting the roof down was huge.

Because now if we get rained
out we can focus inside.

We have the cedar shakes
to do outside our windows.

But if we get rained out, we
can go inside and keep working.

So that's a huge day.

It keeps us moving
forward and it eliminates

any obstacles in the future.

Thankfully, Nick stepped

of the cabin, as well.

I really like the
leather detail here.

So the table and chairs
came out of the cabin.

I grabbed 'em.

I found a leather person.

I'm going to take the
chairs over and have

new seats put onto the chairs.

But before I can do that,
they all need same love.

They need to be sanded down,
they need to be painted.

Oh, yeah.
That's gonna be pretty.

NICK: Ooh, yeah.

ASHLEY: That's gonna
be really pretty.

NICK: I love that blue.

ASHLEY: So I had 'em here
today, so I thought just get out

my sander and just
start prepping them

and getting them ready to go.

So I'm going out to
the leather lady.

You didn't even move your mouth.

You know the
thing about leather?

- No.

so I thought I should

So Nick and I, you
know, we got to shutters

there and just wanted to figure
out what size we wanted it.

You guys, do you want a skinny
book shelf or a fat one?

- Oh, Gussie.

Yeah, I know.

This place where I
picture putting it

on the screened-in porch, where
he gets a lot of inspiration

and does a lot of
writing, there's

not a whole lot of wall space.

So I thought, let's make the
bookshelf nice and narrow.

So we just had to measure
it up, cut the shelves,

put the backing on it,
attach the shelves.

Whoa. Whoa.

Perfect!

This is solid.

All right, cool.

So what I'll do
is I'll take this

and I'm going to
polyurethane this.

And then I'm going to
take that and we'll...

I'll spray those out.

And then I'll take
it to the leather...

NICK: Killer.

ASHLEY: I really appreciate
all your help today.

Can I carry a chair, too?

Beautiful day here
at the Hamill camp.

I stopped in with Bill,
looking to see if there's

anything I can do, lend a hand.

And there's not
a whole lot going

on except for the roofing.

Chase, I brought you
a professional roofer.

Where?

[laughs] Right here, Bill.

All right.

Hop on up, Bill.

We'll take five bundles.

Yeah. Yeah.

I'll put 'em on my back.

CHASE: Perfect.

He and I are going to sit here
and tell you how great of a job

you guys are all doing.
- Are you?

BILL: You got a
hammock anywhere?

[laughs] I came in today...

I noticed that the guys
had bought the stain,

so I wanted to
take a look to see

what it was going to look like
on the old versus on the new.

Chase, what do you think?

You like it?

How is it going to look
on that gray, though?

I don't know.

Should I just paint on
it right now to see?

Oh, yeah.

It does have a brown ting to it
once you put it on this gray.

It's a pretty good match.

It's not going to be perfect.

I wanted perfect, I
would have gone for more

of like, a solid stain.

But I like being able to see
the wood and the characteristics

of the cedar shingles.

Ah!

[laughter]

When cedar shakes are left
natural, they gray up.

So this will keep it a
nice golden wooden color

with the brown on top.

So it's definitely a different
look, but I like both.

It's just different.

[music playing]

So we really know put
the push on this morning

to get the roof started going.

And once the shingles were
going down it was going quick.

There were enough
guys working on that,

so I hopped down, went
inside and started laying out

the walls in the new edition.

This will be the bathroom,
master bedroom here,

hallway there, closet.

And this will have a
shower, toilet, vanity.

This is going to stay open.

And this will probably
get a ceiling in it.

[music playing]

Once we got those
laid out, Justin and I

moved onto the front porch.

In the original plans I
think it had been designed

to be a screened-in porch.

And they never were
able to use it as that

because it was so small.

But now that we've
added that addition,

they should be able to make
this into a screened-in porch

very nicely.

[music playing]

Nice.

It makes all the
difference in the world.

By putting the addition
on we gained a huge master

bedroom, room for a bathroom.

And then, cutting out the area
where it was shaked over just,

you know, gave a nice
view of the water,

let in a lot more light,
let in a really nice breeze.

So I think it really feels
like a screened-in porch now.

[music playing]

Today's a big day.

We have Doug the plumber
here and Francis.

Francis is going to
dig some water lines,

some sewer pipe, and
then a little conduit

up for some electrical.

OK.

This is right there, down
there by the outhouse.

We know where that is.

We don't know where this is.

There used to be
a trailer up here.

Then they built the camp and
then they put in the septic.

So there's been a septic
system and a well system

with a bunch of water lines
and alarms already in.

So we have to figure
out where these are,

not break 'em, and then
get new stuff to it.

What tree is that?

No, I think it's
that one right there.

Oh, yeah.

You know, this is
a big project here.

Hopefully it goes smooth and
we don't mess anything up.

There's a lot of

We're coming right
along at the Hamill camp.

Today is a big day.

We have Doug the plumber
here and Francis.

Francis is going to
dig some trenches.

Doug's gonna lay
some water lines,

some sewer pipe, and a little

You know, this is
a big project here.

Hopefully it goes smooth and
we don't mess anything up.

There's a lot of

That's a pump house.

There's your well.

There's a well pipe right down
there, down to the rigging

in the well.

This is just all for that?

Why didn't they bring the
well head all the way out?

It's old school.

Turns out the pump house,
the well, and the electrical

are under the same place.

So from there it's
pretty easy to figure

out where the existing water
and electrical lines were.

We'll get this out
of your way, you guys

can start going to town, huh?

I got faith in Doug
and the plants.

All we have to do is run one
trench from the pump house

to the new edition.

Then Doug will run our
new water and sewer lines.

And while Doug is
doing that, I'm

going to help Francis
pick out some stones

from the property for
landscaping and steps

to the new platform.

Hopefully, by the
end of the day,

we'll have the camp tied
into the existing well.

And then we'll have the new camp
tied into the existing septic.

And then we'll
have a conduit run

so we can get all
the power underground

going to camp, as well.

Then Francis will fill
everything in, cover it over,

and you'll never
know we were there.

Back at the Hamill
camp, today we're

going to work on the deck system
that goes over the pumphouse.

It's going be a covered
deck, so it's gonna

be a different project for us.

It'll be a really neat project.

The covered deck goes over the
well house and all the pump

and the septic pump and
everything that went into that.

So we have to cover that, and
we have to make it accessible.

So we decided to kill
two birds with one stone

and build a beautiful
debt with a nice area

they can hang out on.

This deck's gonna be cool.

We're gonna do kind of a
modified little timber frame

structure with a roof on it.

We're waiting for the
stonemason to get here.

After he's here, he's going
to probably be a week.

Then we got to put
the floors down.

So even though we have, you
know, a little over a week

left, we're waiting on subs.

So it's going to be a race
to the finish, like always.

Today, Sarah and BT
are finishing the roof

on the pumphouse,
and Francis is here

working on the landscaping.

The ground is extremely bony.

There's a lot of rocks.

So as Frances was pulling
out the rocks he made a pile.

But then he kind of incorporated
those into the landscaping.

He made a nice set of stairs
up into the covered gazebo

and, you know, set a few
around the camp, as well.

All told, landscaping
was probably...

With the excavation work
that needed to be done,

probably about $5,000.

I love the landscaping
that Francis did.

They used existing
rocks from the property,

and just placed them in
really, really great ways.

I've said it once and I'm
going to say it again.

Francis has really stepped
up his plant game this year.

Ike asked that we
incorporated some cool stonework

into the camp.

Mason the mason was here,
and he got the stones

for the wood stove hearth.

What I'm doing is
laying out a template

for the stones,
where we're going

to put the hearth in back.

And I'm just marking out right
now where all these rocks are,

so I won't have to
cut rocks or anything

and make a mess in the house.

Almost ready now to
take a picture of this

so that I have a
reference of exactly where

these are going to be going.

That's why I took pictures, to
make sure I'm staying straight,

so that all the rocks
above will fit together.

The hearth, just more or
less, it's a heat barrier

from your... from your walls.

You could go with a sheet rock
or some tin or tile, bricks.

But rocks are just natural.

Fire protection, heat
protection... you have to have

something behind the stove.

And the installation
of the last stone.

A good cleaning on the last
few stones and this is a wrap.

It looks absolutely beautiful.

It looks great.

It's a nice little color
addition and texture

addition to the pine.

We got it all grouted
in, and that's ready to go.

We just, again, waiting for
wood floors in the kitchen area.

Then we can set a base and
put the wood stove back in.

Next he's going to
tackle the stone shower.

So today I'm
meeting up with Amy.

She's the leather
worker that Jedi

mentioned can help me with the
chairs from the Hamill camp.

I got the painted chair.

I'm so excited to see
what you've been working on.

I found these chairs
and a table in the camp.

Mm-hmm.

And instead of throwing it away,

it's always nice
when we can, like...

-... reuse it, repurpose it.

So I chose this
really nice blue.

And with Amy's raw
leather, I think

the two are really going
to complement each other

and it's going to look great.

So did you come up
with some ideas?

I did.

I have a couple of ideas that
I was playing around with.

I love poppies.

AMY: And then I started
doing, like, a more...

He's... this is a
real woodsy camp.

This is going to be so nice.

It's gonna feel like a whole
brand new table and chair set.

AMY: Yeah.
- This is such an upgrade.

We're now taking these
beautiful custom leather pieces

and putting them onto
these newly painted chairs.

I mean, it doesn't get
any better than that.

Gonna show me how it's done?

AMY: Absolutely.

ASHLEY (VOICEOVER): So the
first step with Amy was

that she wet down the leather.

Then she put a piece
of plastic over it

and then taped the
design down to it.

AMY: You take the stylus,
and you go over the lines

that are for the design.

And it will transfer
it onto the leather.

See how that embosses on there?

ASHLEY: Oh, yeah.

AMY: So you have your line
and you don't have any pencil

or pen marks on there.

ASHLEY: Oh.

AMY: The water
helps soften it up.

And then, when it dries,
I'll spray it again.

ASHLEY: She made
it look effortless.

Me, not so much.

So as soon as Amy's
done with the seats

I'll grab them, put them
back together, and voila.

Finished piece, once it's
tacked onto the chairs...

I mean, this is
really over the top.

I definitely, definitely think
that Ike's gonna love it.

We're cranking
right away at Hamill

and it just came
to an abrupt halt.

Today has been a struggle.

I went to get materials.

I went one way, down power
line, had to go 10 miles around.

On my way back, I get all
the way to the job site

and I had to literally get the
chainsaw out and cut a tree out

of the way to get here.

We have had the driest
September on record.

Today is a different story...

40 mile an hour winds,
heavy rains from the South.

A big tree just fell on the
other side of the property,

knocked out power.

And it shut down everything.

And if we don't get
out of here now,

there's a chance we could
be stuck here with no power.

It's Thursday and we lost power.

[laughs] Yeah, nothing.

There's no lights on the meter.

We're never down.

We're never down.

[laughs]

We got hand saws.

We got a generator.

RYAN: What's on
the list for today?

What's the punch list?

The list today...

The front screened-in porch,
the screen panels can be built.

All the doors, we're
going to do Z-back doors.

So those can be cased out.

I brought a window to get that
window in the kitchen area

and get ready for the masons.

The masons have a little
bit more work to do.

They've got to do the shower.

But it's looking good.

RYAN: It looks real good.

So I think if we
got that done today,

then next we can focus on
working our way right out.

It's a windy week
in Mount Vernon.

And today we getting the place
closed in, ready for flooring.

So a Z-back door is something
that you'd make at camp.

We just take one-bys
tongue and groove.

You get your measurements,
and then you put a Z

in the back of it to hold it.

Then, when you hang
it, you want to hang it

so the Z goes to
the bottom hinge,

so all the weight sits there
and it holds the door up.

Z-backs.

What was I doing today?

BT and I were prepping and
building all the screens

in the screened-in porch.

It was one of the last things
they had to do, pretty easy.

We ripped all our stops,
got them all painted,

ripped up all our
screen material,

got our screen framed, all
painted and put together,

and slid in nicely.

Springtime, it'd great
to sleep out there.

JEDI: It'd be an excellent spot
on a hot day with a nice breeze

coming right up the guzzle.

It's a pretty basic kitchen.

We're reusing the base
cabinets they had.

It's going to have
a small stove,

a small refrigerator, a sink
base, and a metal base cabinet.

But in front of the sink we
left an opening for a window

onto the screened-in porch
just let more light in.

They can open it up and get a
breeze in there if they want.

So I just framed it in
and found this window

in my junk pile of windows.

This is from a previous
camp we worked on.

And I'll just try and
reuse these hinges.

I don't know if I'll
be able to or not.

Cool.

Oh, my gosh.

It is gonna blow it
right through there.

Today, while Ashley and her team
are furnishing and decorating

the cabin, Mason our mason is
finishing off the stone shower.

This really is the last step
before we give the camp back.

Before we got here, they were
using an outhouse regularly

when they were staying here.

So now, to have indoor plumbing
connected to the septic system,

water connected to the
well, power connected,

I is finally making the
upgrades and the connections

that have been here so
long waiting to happen.

Before, this cabin
didn't have a bathroom.

There was an outhouse
but now this camp

will have one of the nicer
bathrooms we've ever done.

For the furnishings
in this cabin

I'm going to use the chairs
and table that we redid.

And, yeah, so we have
the bookcase where we'll

be able to display his books.

And, you know what?

I grabbed a desk so that
he had a great place

where he could sit and write
on his new screened-in porch.

I framed some of his posters
that we had hanging up.

And then just...
I have a dog bed,

you know, just kind
of focused on reusing

a lot of the furniture that he
had in here, making it nicer,

and I'm bringing
in my own touch.

ASHLEY: Oh, yeah. Got his dog.

CHASE: Oh, he's
got Finn with him.

Yeah, so it's definitely
a little bit bigger now.

It's unbelievable to
see it, you know, now.

I couldn't even
recognize parts of it.

It was so crazy.

It started in the ground here.

You know, we had to
connect the septic.

IKE: Yup.

We connected the well.

We connected the electrical.

And when Francis was digging
all the trenches to do that,

this is some pretty rocky soil...

IKE: [laughs]

CHASE:... so we had
a bunch of rocks

that we needed to
do something with,

and Francis used
them extremely well.

Wow.

You know, he set them around,
kind of defined the driveway

again a little bit.

- So that's all from here?
- Yeah.

- Yeah.
- Wow.

Oh, my.

And then, on the camp itself,
you know, we started out...

Lifted it up, got under it,
jacked and leveled it up.

Brought it up probably
a good foot and a half.

We had to, you know, get in
here, do a lot of our work.

Those massive fines came down.

Pinnacle Tree got rid of those.

IKE: Got you.

So those aren't
an issue anymore.

IKE: Yup.

We decided to do the
new addition perpendicular

versus parallel with it.

IKE: Mm-hmm.

CHASE: It just gives more space.

It's amazing how
much more functional

the space is now that it's got
that extradition on the side.

We were able to keep
the original cedar shakes

on the main original
camp, and did new cedar

shakes on the rest of it.

And then just treated
them with a stain.

That's amazing.

Holy moly.

Can we see inside?

[laughter]

I think so.

Oh, wow.

It's amazing.

It's changed a little bit.

CHASE: Woodstove's in the
same place, but we put a...

IKE: Oh, wow.

CHASE:... beautiful stone
hearth behind that.

That is amazing.

Kitchen was absolutely
not functional before.

And now, you know, it's
got a legitimate stove,

a legitimate refrigerator.

It's going to be amazing to be
able to prepare meals and have

a place to sit and eat.

It was pretty open but
there was some paneling.

We pulled that all out.

IKE: Yup.

All new electrical throughout.

This is the original
table and chair

that was still in the camp.
- Oh, wow.

ASHLEY: Yup. We took it and...

OK.

ASHLEY:... we ripped
off the old covers.

And I brought it
to my friend, who

made all new leather chairs.

That's beautiful.

They've reused so much of
the... what was originally there

in the camp... you know, the
furniture and the chairs

and even the cabinets
in the kitchen.

And it really has the same
feel to it, the same vibe.

With the new addition
we were able to get

the bedroom out of
there and turn that

into a true screened-in porch.

Wow.

Is that for me to write on?
CHASE: Yup.

it had windows before,

as soon as we took the
windows in and framed it up

for screens, you could
just tell that that's

what it originally was.

You always look up from...
From your writing and you kind

of stare off into the distance
and, you know, imagine what

you're... what you're seeing.

And it just helps to
be able to, you know,

look out at such a beautiful
lake, beautiful scenery.

they put into the space

It's such a wonderful,
cozy space now.
