- Gentlemen, the factsspeak for themselves.

There is no room for doubt thatthis man standing before you

entered the commandheadquarters at two o'clock

in the morning with thesole intention of stealing

the entire payroll of the garrison.

Which he must have known was in the safe.

Evidently the captain,being awakened by a noise,

surprised the accused inthe very act of stealing

and a struggle ensued

in which the captainripped a button from his

attacker's uniform.

Then, a moment later, hesucceeded in striking his attacker

with a blunt object eventhough, as you all know,

he would die momentsafter of a knife wound

brutally inflicted by the accused.

If I'd been the thief thestrongbox would still be

in the office.

I was found unconscious.
