Mr President, the Prime Minister, members of the Parliament,
city authorities, ladies and gentlemen.
Before we get started, let us give a brief overview
of the works and activities of great man, literally genius, Linnar Priimägi.
His roles in life so far have been:
husband, deputy mayor, high school graduate,
journalist, lover, honorary citizen,
associate professor, drama director, drama actor, playwright,
tour guide, private teacher, essay writer,
film critic, film editor, film actor, philologist, photo critic, photo director,
Goethean, Hegelian,
imagologist, intendant, father, tutor,
chamber choir singer, catholic, high school teacher,
literary critic, literary scholar, publisher,
communist youth, corrector, cultural critic, cultural adviser,
cultural psychologist, art critic, art historian, university educator,
children's choir singer, laureate, logographer,
member of a creative union, poet,
reputation designer, model, exhibition designer,
little Octobrist, opera director, opponent, head of department,
pantomime director, non-partisan, pensioner, ticket controller,
pioneer, propaganda theorist,
librarian, folk dancer, travel show host, advertising theorist, repressed,
secret adviser, semiotician, simultaneous interpreter,
resident of Tallinn, resident of Tartu, doctor of science, theater expert,
theater critic, television lecturer, editor, translator,
enemy, senior pioneer leader, brother,
student, student theater director
and Mephistopheles.
Well, say a little something.
I never say a little something.
I'll say a sentence that goes down in history.
Please step forward.
Do you think I'm not worth making a movie about me?
Some commission must review Priimägi,
take off your clothes and show is it okay to make a film about you or not.
That's nonsense!
What should your funeral be like?
Everyone must be dressed in white.
White suits, white dresses
and Johan Strauss's waltz "On the Beautiful Blue Danube"
must play at the grave and everyone has to dance.
What are you filming now?
Eggs and pans. - No need!
They are in every home.
That shows that you are also a bit like a human being.
No. I'm not bit like a human being. I am not a human being.
No need to film them, these pans. I didn't even wash the stove.
I have said this many times to all those close to me,
I'm afraid they don't have the money to to that,
but I'll leave them some money to do it.
Not that they could all buy a white suit at my expense.
No, let them buy it themselves.
But an acquaintance once told me,
"Linnar, you will probably open your eyes even in coffin
to check whether there are beautiful people around."
Yes, I'm ready to open my eyes in the coffin.
Have you noticed
that beautiful people have a more interesting life than ugly ones?
Beautiful people get into adventures that ugly people never get into,
for no one will ever seduce or tempt them.
Mephistopheles has no interest in them.
Let the ugly live their lives there.
Many really have to die down there,
where the ship's heavy oars move.
Others live above the helm,
and know the stars and the flight of birds.
Many are lying, bones and limbs heavy,
near the roots of the mess of life.
Others have chairs where Sibyls and queens accompany them.
There they sit, like at home,
thoughts light, fingers light.
What do you think, is it worth making a film about Priimägi?
About Priimägi?
No, no it's not.
Tell me honestly.
Priimägi, let's say he's an art historian.
So, he fidgets there, speaks about this and that.
But he is very boring as a person and it's not fascinating.
He can tell you a wise story,
he can tell you about art, explain something,
but then you have to show more of the art he explains in your film,
and not his personality.
His personality itself is relatively insignificant.
He is not... well, he's not a man.
Of course, your movie is not going to work.
Are you doing everything for that? - No-no, I'm just so complicated.
You don't... your mind understands me no more than ten percent.
If you're thinking of making a movie about him, then I don't know, my dear man,
will you find anyone at all who would like this Priimägi.
Search.
Why am I wasting my remaining life
on people I have nothing to talk to.
Not a single thought to discuss.
First of all, they are not able to accept the thoughts that I have in my head
and secondly, I don't want to hear the thoughts that are in their heads.
Don't they read the choir of spirits? - They don't read it right now,
because they don't have the text and they can't read it by heart.
It all stays out and starts with the text, I'm telling you this for the third time.
The whole scene now starts with the text - "I welcome the great scientist."
I welcome the great scientist who is building new paths.
What was that now, what frog dance was that?
It was sarcasm. - No, there is no sarcasm.
You are doing a reverence, as we agreed.
Why everything shakes from the beginning.
Can you concentrate?
Yes, I just don't remember.
I'll show you, just follow me.
What more is there to know, if the name would reveal the plan?
Once... Where did you go?!
Once a wicked, once a pretender, once a tempter.
Well, tell me, who are you then?
Can you do it? - Yes.
This movement and then three steps, with the correct text,
which Goethe has written and August Sang translated into Estonian.
Tell him.
The methods may be different.
For some, it is enough to make a remark in a quiet voice.
I have such an intelligent, handsome boy, speaks in a low voice.
Very nice Faust.
But there are some you just have to shout at.
Panso shouted, Ird shouted,
Stanislavsky shouted, Nemirovitsh Dantshenko shouted.
So what do you want, that I don't shout?
I also shout, if necessary I shout, it's the easiest way, the shortest way,
because the creative process is going on, there is no time to drawl here.
Here you have to give a command that is filled in a fraction of a second.
Yes! And they are happy, because if they do it,
then they will understand it themselves.
No-no-no.
But look, you are so far away from him now.
You have to get back to him, this means,
that the text you're going with, you take smaller steps.
Take this move again.
Once a wicked, once a pretender, once a tempter...
And then you can't move anymore, after you say 'tempter', you stand still.
But you're standing too far, why are you doing it like this?
I can say it from here, too. - No.
It will be as I told, yes.
Practice until you can do it with three steps.
What more is there to know, if the name would reveal the plan?
Do you know what's wrong? You speak so slowly and prolonged.
What more is there to know, if the name would reveal the plan?
Say it faster. There's no time to wander around here.
What more is there to know, if the name would reveal the plan?
Once a wicked, once a pretender, once a tempter. Tell me, who are you then?
I am part of that power
which eternally wills evil and eternally works good.
They are my children, I can whip them, I have always said that.
If necessary, I'll whip you. Then you'll grow up as decent people.
So I'm used to no one arguing.
If I am a leader and a teacher, then I rarely discuss things.
If there are any creative questions, then it is possible,
or some intelligent matters, but such minor daily stuff in general,
it is not worth devoting time to them.
Hi, I'm Linnar. Today you are traveling with me in the south-west of France
in a place we might call the most alcoholic place in France.
The name of this city is Cognac.
Only two glasses. - No, they don't give more.
Is it on? And action.
We're currently in the Remy Martin factory or rather in the place
where this cognac, which we all know, is made.
If anything should be summed up,
then this Latin sentence is the most correct -
non multas et multum.
You don't have to drink much to get a lot of taste from this whole thing.
Isn't it nice? - Yeah.
Very nice.
We were talking about a special drink, an alcoholic beverage.
You can talk about mashed potatoes... - You claimed...
...or how primitive people defecated under the woods.
You were saying now that... - I didn't say anything!
I was talking right now, don't change the subject.
I'm not!
We were talking about the origins of alcohol consumption
and I said it started with a ritual.
No, it didn't. - It did.
This is nonsense. - It did!
This is just nonsense. - You haven't learned anything.
Yes, there is no need to learn it. - Who are you relying on?
It can't rely on anyone, you rely on a bluff, dear man.
You rely on a bluff.
And all the ethnographers and all the ethnologists
and theorists of religion have been bluffing?
And you alone are right? - Why alone?
Here are uneducated people like you. - Yes.
There's always more of you. - It's good there's only one of you.
The strange thing is that this education of yours
has not taken you further than here in this car.
That you're exactly as far, you are sitting in the same car
and you haven't gone any further, you're exactly as far.
You could be somewhere higher by now, but you're not.
You're right here in the same car... - In what sense higher?
You know what Goethe said about you,
"Twilight makes even plain writing illegible."
Did he say that about you too, you're trying to turn black into white?
No. He said that about you, it was signed separately - for Manfred.
Tiina has a new idea. She has a new idea for a series.
Now the management of Estonian Television has changed.
There's a kind of travel show where you drive by car
in the desert or along the tundra
and the only discussion is - where's the next gas station
and where they can get a cardan shaft,
as far as I understand this car stuff at all,
where it can be replaced or so.
And rude people!
I wouldn't allow such rude people, such bumpkins, such halfwits,
it would be forbidden to allow them on screen.
Such louts!
Who should we focus on then, is it fun?
If it's fun, it's only fun for like-minded louts.
As the Latin proverb says - asinus asinum caudet -
the donkey enjoys the donkey.
A lout enjoys the lout, when he sees one on TV screen.
Rude people grow here in Estonia, we cultivate rude people.
Who have no sense of honor or shame, from the highest echelon to the lowest.
Who steal and are not ashamed. I understand, everyone has to steal.
Let them steal.
They have always been stealing, so how they're not stealing nowadays?
Steal. But be ashamed, be ashamed.
I open the TV and damn Priimägi pops up,
then I change the channel or do something else.
I don't want to see him.
You know, I was in a madhouse, they took my clothes away.
So I was only in pajamas.
I was so homesick, I ran away, wearing only pajamas.
And I ran and reached the big highway.
A few kilometers away, that led to Tallinn and I started hitchhiking.
Of course, no one stopped.
I stood there and hitchhiked,
until the damn hospital car came to pick me up.
Someone probably called and said
that there's this fool in hospital clothes here
and they came to take me back, I didn't get to the city.
But what is good documentary? It is staging.
Even if you go just with a camera and make a chronicle or something,
you edit it as well.
There, too, you put your own accents and so.
Why haven't you filmed this bookshelf?
I will stand here, like this, and seemingly take a book from here.
Why are you taking this angle? Go there and take it from there.
But then film this encyclopedia too.
Can you film something against the light now?
It will be all wrong again. Well, film already.
Yes, yes. One moment. I need some time.
Don't be so impatient. - Sad sack!
One sad sack on top of the other. Yeah.
Well, take this important book that characterizes you.
I'll take it from here.
Up there is a "projects" folder, maybe that one?
No, they have all expired a long time ago.
So, I'll tell you something I can find right away.
What I can't understand? - Yes.
The identification of mythological creatures
takes place at the level of the objects themselves.
Just as Leni Riefenstahl did "Triumph Of The Will", yes, "The Will."
Told Hitler, that didn't come out, let's do it again.
Hitler immediately called the SA,
everyone marched like in a ballet, raised their legs high.
I read the memories of Leni Riefenstahl.
Goebbels tried his best to stop her,
because once Goebbels wanted to fuck her, but she said no.
But Goebbels wanted to fuck everyone.
Who among you has children? Do you have children?
Do you have children? No one else has kids?
So, the others don't just hang around, but also begin to make children.
We need Estonians. Today we will talk about Estonia.
The topic is the core of Estonian culture.
The three most important questions - where do we come from
who are we and what will become of us?
And we are one of the earliest peoples to come to Europe,
according to Lennart Meri.
He took foreign diplomats to the fields on the outskirts of the city
and showed that we have been cultivating this field here for 5000 years,
where were you at the time, Germans?
But we became a nation only in the middle of the 19th century,
we had to hurry, we had to catch up with others.
We had to have our own epic poem.
What nation does not have their own epic poem?
In short, we had to catch up with everything,
we had to hurry to join the family of European nations,
as we hurried now in 2004 to join the European Union.
And we handed over some of our national functions to this European Union.
We compare ourselves, are we bored enough already.
Are we bored enough to live, just like in the Nordic countries.
Well, in the Nordic countries, as we now know,
thanks to immigrants, life is becoming more and more interesting day by day.
The issue is becoming more urgent,
will I be raped tomorrow? or only the day after tomorrow, yeah.
Will I be beaten up or not?
Kristen Michal, he was the foreign minister in the meantime.
And he said that our goal could be
a boring and safe Nordic country in a good way.
Boring and safe, I don't want to live a boring life.
My life is worth more than any Nordic boredom.
This is amoeba life, it is not a decent life.
But the Russians next to us, you see -
we have a light heart from a fun song, we can never get bored...
And so what if he knows art?
Who among Estonian people is so interested in art?
That I understand it so much now and he explains.
Why are you making this movie, Tontu?
Oh, leave that thought, Manfred,
you can't get no damn portrait of Priimägi,
unless you can find out that he, and discover that...
If you can find it out, then maybe it'll be an interesting movie.
I don't tolerate smelly people around me.
I have to surround myself with a scent wall, defend myself.
Because people, how should I say it, smell so animal.
I have four hundred bottles of scent, I have a great iris smell here.
I'll put it on you.
I don't dare go home now, my wife is starting to suspect.
Tell her you slept with Priimägi.
Then can I go? - Yes.
"Mandariina Tac"
Film it from the top, then the back bottles will also show.
Film it, pull it higher.
Otherwise you only see one row, come on, raise your camera now.
Hey, you had one good theory that an artist must be bisexual.
Tell me about this theory.
If the question is asked in this way, that the artist must be bisexual,
then this question is wrong.
Well, how should I ask this question?
I'll ask it myself, shut up. You already...
Don't talk anymore. I'm talking now.
Everyone is bisexual.
Only these things are not in balance for everyone,
and has tended toward heterosexuality
and others are tended more toward homosexuality.
But human being is the most important thing
and we must not forget before we add something there,
that human is a sexual being.
Because the human genetic code says he has to reproduce.
He has to reproduce.
But human is given the fact that he reproduces only when he pleases.
Not as Hando Runnel wrote, that I saw the love life of flies.
Flies don't like to reproduce, they just reproduce.
Okay and let them multiply then.
I saw the love life of flies, so what love life is there?
They reproduce.
Man is not a fly in that sense,
with humans it is somehow related to pleasure.
Human also has fun reproducing.
For me, the priority is for humanity to multiply.
This is especially important in Estonia, for the Estonian community to multiply,
that we would have more Estonian people.
This is important to me.
But this, how to have fun there,
if you go to a gay bar at night and screw someone there, that's okay.
Go and screw.
I used to dream about women and so, but not any more.
That's it, this is finished.
And I think it's after that damn strong drug treatment.
What else could it be? It fell off very suddenly.
As soon as I went to that damn hospital,
I got not only pills, but I was also injected with sedatives.
Because I'm very restless.
This boy Vooglaid, he...
I say, that your family ideal, dear Varro,
is a 19th century Biedermeier family, where there are father, mother, children.
Everyone is sitting in the gazebo drinking coffee and so on.
He argues that this is not the case. But of course it is. Of course it is.
And now the worst, it no longer concerns him.
That this family ideal that comes from 19th century German Biedermeier,
now the whole homosexual community wants to have to have a queermeier.
They all want to get married, sit in the gazebo,
adopt children and so on.
No, such a thing is never needed.
I don't need this queermeier there next to the Biedermeier.
Why are you imitating this family model? Why?
You are adventure, you are falling in love,
you are breaking fidelity, you are...
As interesting a life as it can be
and now you want to chain yourself with marriage bonds,
you want us to chain you in the Town Hall
and then afterward you won't be breaking fidelity?
We have four wheels but we can't drive,
we have a car, but we can't drive, that's nonsense?
What are you telling me?
This is because there are sections.
You can't go everywhere but you can drive from the other side.
I don't understand, if you have a car, then hit the gas and go.
You can't, why are you saying that you can't?
An hour and a half passes and you can't.
No, dammit, in an hour and a half, you'll figure out how you can.
I started thinking how to explain this to you
what I just said in a simple manner and now needs a more complex explanation.
Bordeaux Opera House is a memorial
to how the French value culture, theater and musical theater among them.
When this building was originally built, it was level with the ground.
The pillars touched the square, but to highlight art...
Oh, why everything turns out wrong now?
Let's leave the first version.
I'll sign that it was level with the ground.
How can I say that opera was leveled?
This would mean that the opera was demolished.
It seems to me that you still didn't answer me...
That question which was wrong?
You told me to shut up an you still didn't answer.
Ask your question again. - That good theory?
In order to be a good artist, it is not enough to be just heterosexual.
There is no connection between sexuality and being an artist.
To be just an interesting person - can't be done, absolutely.
One can only be interesting for someone.
You always have to seduce either a certain person
or seduce the whole community or the entire art audience.
This is always the task of Mephistopheles.
You can't be a good artist, if...
That you don't...
So in any case you're a good queer artist, what the hell!
There is no queer artist.
You should look for followers
among those who live longer than you.
I am not Jesus Christ
who seeks followers among the bearded men.
I don't care about them, they may die before me,
I'll invite them all to my funeral.
I need to know, when I invest knowledge or teaching somewhere,
then I'll invest in those who are much younger than me,
so that this knowledge does not die,
that the memory of European culture would still live on.
Whatever Priimägi is talking about, it doesn't interest me.
You know, maybe he is a smart man
but his face and manners bother me.
You need to talk to young people, to those who live longer than you.
This is the first condition.
Well, I wonder why I'm talking to you.
Mephistopheles said that, not me. Mephistopheles said that.
Mephistopheles is tempted to say something from time to time.
Because it tastes so good how can I not say that.
I was tired of directing in such a traditional key,
that's why I added a subheading "silent film"
and I imagined it -
that those who come on stage only make movements.
But not with music,
but with the performance of my musical verse.
So the roles are divided so that I read and they play.
Actors, are you ready? - Yes!
Social Democrats
Electoral body for the European elections
Oh Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name.
And what are you politically afraid of?
Who is it afraid then, Svet is afraid?
What the hell, why is he afraid, and he's Russian.
No need to react at all because people are laughing around us.
Listen, don't, who is this Michal now?
No we don't react, we don't react to it at all.
Who, this Svet? Punch him in the nose, hit him so his nose flies behind his neck.
I want to talk to him myself.
I can't start amplifying that crap.
You can't react on things like that.
Let him crackle there, this Michal, it's his duty.
He earns his patches and give him to me.
Volodya, take it all back, what you have you said now,
whatever Michael says you must not react to this.
Because who are you - a downtown elder.
But who's Michal, excuse me, the failed leader of a party.
Of course you're a young boy and on such a position
and you want to stand out.
But you know what, we'll find you another excuse to stand out.
Don't deal with it right now.
Take it easy, be respectable and let's see what comes out
if something comes out, then we react
But before that we do not begin extinguish any fire.
There is no fire yet, you are already extinguishing the fire.
Right, thank you too.
The downtown elder is panicking.
This Svet was a pretty handsome boy, when he was young,
but now he is old and fat.
But when he was young, he was like a - "Svet" is light in Russian.
He was such a radiating beauty.
He was a beautiful boy but now he is ugly.
Why do people have to get old in front of me?
Yes, there is nothing to say.
In any case, I'm not impartial and so,
but the audience praises.
The people praise it, yeah.
They say they have never seen such a theater,
People come here and play something that is fresh.
That's it.
Was our Faust better, than Faust in Vanemuine?
Faust Vanemuine, you know, I wouldn't use this name for that.
Hendrik Toompere junior. He doesn't understand Goethe.
He has brought a text to the stage
and let the actors shout it and scream it.
The director promised that sluts will be brought to me on stage.
Two sluts, what has this got to do with Goethe's Faust?
They couldn't do anything smarter than be sluts.
And the director promised to ban it, in that sense.
Everything, how they talked, how were they dressed,
all their manners, all their gestures,,
this is how you usually perform a slut on stage.
It's a scenery, it's a stage scenery.
I could change the scenery and tell them to play nun.
The nun doesn't move like a slut, but they moved like sluts.
It was all as well placed as a feather in a pig's tail.
if I may quote Viktor Hugo and his "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame".
I completely agree with Jaan Tooming.
He also said that the theater school was screwed.
Nice looking nice girls and handsome boys are coming out of there,
you could put them all on a poster.
The actor comes on stage and can't breathe.
They have not been taught breathing techniques at school.
If you have a speech defect, you are not suitable for stage.
I will not make a flat-footed girl dance in ballet.
We can be nice to all those who are not fit on stage,
who are not fit to dance ballet, who are not fit to play drama,
but art is ruthless.
Yes, there is no mercy here.
Our task is to open your eyes to everything which is nearby
but what you haven't noticed yet.
We are currently in Moravia and indeed it is in the middle of Europe,
a stone's throw from Estonia,
but how many have come here specifically
to see how beautiful this place is,
how nice are the people here, how cheap beer is here,
and how delicious is the food.
Ten is what you can't get.
"Old age is a paradise for the wise", said Balzac in La Pere Goriot.
Old age could be a paradise for the wise,
if you're at home with children and grandchildren and you're cherished,
oh, dear grandpa, dear grandfather.
But if you are stuffed in a nursing home,
then you're fucked.
And this was done to me, I was thrown into a nursing home.
And it was horrible.
It was horrible that they didn't feed you.
Imagine that in the European Union
you get some small porridge in the morning
or sometimes the cooking ladies didn't bother to arrive early,
then you got just a sandwich.
For lunch, around two o'clock, you got a plateful of soup.
Well, the plate wasn't so full, some kind of lean broth.
Two o'clock and that's it.
The cuisine of Bohemia and Moravia is sturdy, it is said that even greasy.
They mix flavors, which we are not really used to.
Well, for example, here's beef, and as far as I can tell here,
this is whipped cream.
Would we do such a thing at home? Never.
I just don't understand why these damn hospitals in the European Union
and care homes and nursing homes give us so miserable food.
I guess it's meant to come here to die,
you don't need to eat, yeah.
It is so nice to sit here and see the people.
Think about how many years
I’ve been sitting there in my damn country home all alone.
You don't see anyone for weeks, months.
there is no one to talk to only with the shopkeeper.
I'm trying to have a conversation with the shopkeeper,
that this bread, how fresh it is and so on.
What is this, when was this sausage made?
The shopkeeper tells me to look at the damn date on the label.
No, I haven't been able to communicate.
I buy wine or beer or something in the village shop
and go around the corner,
where the damn villagers drink their damn beer.
I'm hoping to make friends. I didn't.
I'm going with my own beer, I even had vodka in the back pocket,
that if we start talking, I'll open the damn vodka as well.
But as soon as I step close to the bush,
where the men were sitting, they all took off.
I don't know why I'm so damn despicable or maybe it's because of the crutches.
So, now I'm posing here in this background.
Where is my riding horse and medals.
Don't you have a star, fourth or fifth class?
I have this honorary citizen of Tallinn.
Listen, I'll show it to you.
Wait, I'll put my hand cream on, there must be some respect.
This is mu honorary citizen's badge of honor.
I'll show you, that thing came off here.
They always give me the crappiest things, which always break.
Sometimes I would like to get some good stuff.
Now I have to go to the jeweler and let it weld together again.
It's a cost again.
Well, that's the only badge I have.
Because no president will ever give me a forth class white star.
I don't know what to do with it'? I can't even wear it anywhere.
Well, when are you coming to film my Tartu home?
Do I have to? - Yes
Oh dear.
Leave that thought, Manfred,
You won't get a damn portrait of Priimägi.
If you want to make one damn good documentary,
then this nursing homes subject
would be a good one.
You know, Manfred, no matter what we do here, in this life or so.
We are all attacking the limits of non-existence.
At night on that pomegranate-tree.
Believe me, my love, it was the nightingale.
It was the lark, the bird that sings at dawn, not the nightingale.
Look, my love, there are streaks of light in the clouds parting in the east.
Night is over, and day is coming.
If I want to live, I must go.
If I stay, I’ll die.
That light is not daylight, I know it. It’s some meteor
coming out of the sun to light your way to Mantua.
So stay for a while. You don’t have to go yet.
Let me be captured. Let me be put to death.
I am content, if that’s the way you want it.
I’ll say the light over there isn’t morning.
I’ll say it’s the reflection of the moon.
I’ll say that sound isn’t the lark ringing in the sky.
I want to stay more than I want to go.
Come, death, and welcome! Juliet wants it this way.
Are you going to make my film in color or black and white?
Let's say with a few colors.
I'd like a black and white movie.
You want a black and white movie? - Yes.
Do I have a right to say something? - No, you don't
Of course, your movie is not going to work.
Are you doing everything for that? - No-no, I'm just so complicated.
You don't... your mind understands me no more than ten percent.
But if it goes wrong, someone else will come and make another movie.
I haven't found that someone yet.
I don't think there is another person who is just as stupid.
That must be the key to this whole thing - I am suburban Mephistopheles.
I'm not of our species.

you have to sit for another 22 seconds.
Thank you for your attention!
