In this case, with friendships
and love affairs

formed over the summer months,
maybe it was inevitable

that it would all go bad
by Halloween.

Lifelong bonds,
new friendships,

and summertime affairs set off
a deadly chain of events

for five young lives.

The first link

Julie Dennings.

- Julie was from
a blue-collar family.

She was an achiever,
straight-A student,

captain of the track team.

- Congratulations, sweeties.
- Thank you!

- Julie was a terrific kid.

Really had a great future
ahead of her.

I mean, she had
so much potential...

until the night
of her graduation.

And, uh, Julie was driving
on the road outside of town

when her car lost control.

- Julie did suffer
very severe injuries.

She broke her pelvis,
fractured several vertebrae.

It required months
of rehabilitation.

- Julie developed an addiction
to painkillers

during her recovery.

It was something
that she never really got over.

So we know now that when she was under emotional stress,

she would turn back to pills.

And I believe
that's one of the reasons

she became so isolated
for so long.

Julie's terrible
accident leaves scars

both physical and emotional.

- What I think damaged Julie
the most was the guilt,

because she wasn't the only one
in the car that night.

- Well, back then,
I was on highway patrol.

I got called to the scene
and saw all three of them,

two females and a male.

The young man, he had been
killed instantly.

Julie is cleared
of any wrongdoing,

based on the account given
by the only teenager

to walk away

Julie's best friend,
Emily Montgomery.

- Emily was from good stock.

Her family had a lot
of influence and power

in local politics.

looking to start a new life

unhealthy emotional states

I'd seen him out at the bars
sometimes, around town.

He could be intense

and definitely was always
on the lookout for the ladies.

on Julie and Andrew one day

by asking
why they'd never dated.

It was an innocent question,

but it may have made them both
a little uncomfortable.

and they were, by all accounts,

and good friends.

But the fact is that Julie
hadn't dated since high school.

her accident scar held her back.

act quickly enough.

Not like Emily did.

Given her hidden
feelings for Andrew,

the wedding planning
was difficult for Julie.

And it became even more so

when she realized Brielle
would not be a part of it.

to tell Brielle the truth

A few weeks later,
on Labor Day weekend,

acting lately.

What she didn't realize
is that Caleb's perception

and, in his inebriation,
he stood up to her.

and encounters Andrew.

about the consequences.

They weren't close, but maybe
those few glances and looks

revealed some deep,
unspoken connection.

Maybe it was just
a tipsy late-night kiss.

- Emily caught her fiancé,
Andrew,

in a compromising situation.

that Emily

then verbally and physically
assaulted Brielle.

- I didn't mean it!

coming from their patio.

that will play a key role
in the crime.

would have been a gateway
to opiate addiction.

We now know that when she was
under emotional stress,

she would turn back
to pills.

- Julie's injuries
from the car accident

left her in chronic pain.

She had no trouble getting
legitimate prescriptions.

When Brielle realizes that kissing Andrew

to get back at Emily

has affected
her relationship with Julie,

she attempts damage control.

- I think, at that point,
Brielle was coming

to the long-overdue realization
that many of her problems

with other women
were really of her own making.

- Julie, I'm sorry.

- Brielle obviously valued
her friendship with Julie.

It was the only true friendship
she had.

was wrong.

So we have to ask,

that danger is right outside.

if he stayed sober.

- And as we know
from his past,

when Andrew is backed
into a corner,

his reactions
can be very unpredictable.

While Emily wasn't exactly
making him happy,

he knew that she was
the only option

to regain any sort of respect
from his family.

- Julie was quick to call out
Emily on her problems

with Andrew
and their relationship.

the wedding.

You don't have

As Julie urges Emily
to move on,

Brielle has decided
she's not going anywhere.

to run her out of town,

just like she had been
run out before,

and she wasn't gonna let
some small-town debutante

like Emily
control her in any way.

and must have noticed
Julie's inconsistent behavior.

had been prescribed

opiate painkillers
at various times.

It wasn't hard to figure out
what was going on.

Brielle confirms her suspicion

that Julie is addicted
to painkillers

and turns to an unlikely ally
to help her friend.

- Can we meet up somewhere?

It's about Julie.

I know you don't want
to talk to me,

but have you noticed Julie's
been acting a little weird?

- I think Brielle was genuinely
concerned for Julie.

Reaching out to Andrew
was her only option.

- She's been taking these.

You have to talk to her.

- But she was also hoping
that Andrew would tell Emily

about Julie's problem

and that somehow Emily
would turn her back on Julie

and leave them alone.

If Emily is willing
to turn her back on Andrew

for his addiction,

Brielle believes she just might turn her back on Julie as well.

But Brielle miscalculates

exactly what Andrew's motives
are for meeting her.

and how much trouble
she'd caused.

everyone's life.

- He basically blamed her
for all of his problems.

Brielle's decision to confide in Andrew backfires,

and the consequences
will be deadly.

- Andrew had indeed come
to a bit of a crossroads.

He was facing the reality
that he was going to lose Emily,

the last ounce of respect
of his family,

and the inheritance
that went along with it.

- Emily had been
thinking a lot

about what Julie had said
about the wedding,

and she decided
her friend was right.

She needed to call off
the engagement.

- What?
- I've been talking to Julie.

And we both decided that it's
best if we hold off until...

- Andrew thought
that cutting off contact

and outwardly
rejecting Brielle

was the key
to getting Emily back.

Then he learned
that it was actually Julie

that was keeping it
from happening.

In his head, he was
out of options, desperate,

and desperate people don't
usually make sound decisions.

- There are some things
about Julie that you don't know.

She's been trying
to get in between us.

- Andrew told Emily
that Julie was in love with him,

that Julie had plotted
with Brielle

to help break them up
with the kiss.

- She even put Brielle
up to the kiss

to break us up.

I didn't want to tell you,
but these are hers.

She's been lying to you.

that night.

But Brielle
is not the only victim

of this Halloween horror.

dead in her bedroom

when EMTs responded
to the 911 call.

The coroner evaluated her death
as forced asphyxiation...

that was found beside her.

We did find unidentified blood
in the house.

Our immediate assumption was,
the blood came

from defensive wounds
on the killer.

While waiting
for DNA results,

investigators focus
on Caleb McEntire.
