With loving eyes.

We have a major problem, Major Choi.

The higher-ups must know that Comrade Han plans to turn herself in.

I think they sent a sniper.

No. No.

Episode 17

Kang Woo!

Kang Woo!

What happened?

It's nothing major. He had appendicitis.

Is he in surgery right now?

- What about the wedding? - The wedding has been postponed.

Till when?

Please give us more details.

I'm sorry. I have to wrap up here.

We will be issuing a detailed press release.

I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

Just one more question!

Hello?

Yes, Ms. Gyeong.

How are things over there?

The press is everywhere. It's mayhem here.

I told them what you told me.

How could something like this happen?

Surgery in Progress

You shouldn't just sit here like this.

Why don't you go and get changed?

You can't change anything by just sitting here.

- Oh! - My goodness.

Major Choi, how is Comrade Myeongwol?

- She's fine. - What a relief.

We were so worried that something terrible would happen,

and we waited here.

But Kang Woo got hurt.

Pardon?

The wedding's been canceled.

Why Kang Woo?

It looks like he took the bullet instead.

Oh...

So they did send a sniper.

- It looks like it. - Oh my goodness.

Is Comrade Kang Woo okay?

I don't know for sure, but he didn't look good.

Oh, no. Poor Comrade Myeongwol.

But if they sent a snipper to keep Myeongwol from turning herself in,

they won't stop here.

That's right.

They will try to kill Comrade Myeongwol again.

Is that why you're back?

You could have left for the North.

Find out where Kang Woo is hospitalized.

I have to go.

- See? - Huh?

There's no way he'd leave with Myeongwol's life in danger.

Poor Major Choi.

Regardless, Myeongwol's heart is set on Kang Woo.

No!

Didn't you attend Kang Woo's wedding?

Why would I?

I don't feel like congratulating him.

Plus, it's better for him if I don't show up.

You're doing well.

What about you?

He's not worth my time.

Plus, I'm sure he has more than enough people at the wedding.

I did my part by sending over a large cash gift.

Wow. So you sent him money?

Even though you hate him?

I couldn't get myself to do even that.

That goes to show you're still immature.

What if people talk?

Whatever. I don't care.

Have you really given up on Kang Woo now?

I'm just tired of it all.

Did you deliver the cash gift?

The wedding was canceled.

- Pardon? - What?

They say Mr. Kang Woo was rushed off for an appendectomy,

but rumor has it that he was actually shot.

Shot?

No way? Who would shoot Kang Woo?

So how is he?

He seems to be in critical condition.

Who would be after Kang Woo?

And a gunshot, no less...

By the way, it doesn't look like Mr. Choi has left the country.

What? He hasn't left?

No. His name wasn't on the final boarding list.

Wait. Was Choi Ryu behind Kang Woo's...

If not, why?

Find out what Choi Ryu is up to,

and let me know if there's anything unusual.

Yes, sir.

What are they talking about?

What would Choi do to Kang Woo?

please ensure that I can safely make my way to the North.

I need a plane ticket and ID clearance.

And what did he mean by "the North?"

It can't be...

No, no. That's ludicrous.

How is he, doctor? He's okay, right?

We removed the bullet and sutured the wound.

Thankfully, the bullet didn't hit any vital organs.

Thanks you. Thanks you.

But he did lose a lot of blood on his way over here.

He hasn't regained consciousness yet.

Pardon?

So when will he...

It's hard to say. We can't tell yet.

Considering what happened, he's lucky to be alive.

Don't worry too much.

He'll be back up in no time.

Right.

The whole thing is crazy.

How could someone get shot in broad daylight in Seoul?

Who would do this?

Do you have any ideas?

Was Kang Woo being threatened by someone?

May be someone's after him, like the Minerva Hotel people.

Or maybe a crazed stalker suddenly went after him.

Whoever that psycho is, he'll pay if I catch him.

Daegang.

Gyeongju.

Is Kang Woo okay?

Why did you come here?

I heard Kang Woo had surgery. How could I not come by?

He's fine, so don't bother him.

We can talk outside.

- What's with you? - Let's go outside.

Who would do this?

Do you have any ideas?

What are you doing?

I told you already.

Since we fail,

I can't let Kang Woo live. He knows who we are.

No. It can't be.

He left S. Korea anyway.

Please, Gyeongju.

What's up with you?

Be honest with me.

About what?

You're keeping something from me, aren't you?

What would I keep from you?

Then why are you stammering?

Who, who's... Who's stammering?

See? You're stammering.

Look at me in the eye.

See?

Is there a secret that you're keeping from me?

Do I mean so little to you?

it's not that, Gyeongju.

I'm very disappointed.

Let's break up.

Pardon? Gyeongju!

This is not cool. Gyeongju! Gyeongju!

What are your plans?

I've decided to stay,

so I'll either turn myself in, or live the way I've been living.

I will have to make a choice, though.

What about you?

Turning myself in would be better, right?

Sure. If you don't want to live in fear...

But what if the higher-ups come after me like Myeongwol?

Myeongwol became a celebrity here,

so if she turns herself in, that'll be big news.

But we're small fry. No one would care.

Who knows, though?

Then just keep living like you always have.

But that would be nerve-wracking, too.

I want to sleep well at night.

Then turn yourself in.

But even if I do, I won't sleep well...

So what do you want me to do?

This is so frustrating.

Why can't you just make up your mind?

Wait. I know a way.

What is it?

I'll just report you.

What?

Is that 113?

What is wrong with you?

I'm sorry, but this isn't visiting hours.

I came to see you.

Please be honest.

About what?

Who are you and Choi?

What's going on between granddad, Choi, and Kang Woo?

And why did Choi...

Why did he talk about going to the North?

Don't try to feign ignorance.

I know that you're somehow involved.

Something is shady, right? Something I shouldn't know?

Why don't you ask your grandfather?

Do you know where Choi is right now?

I heard he never left the country.

What?

He didn't have anything to do with Kang Woo getting hurt, right?

No way. But...

How could he...

I will spare your life

if you quietly return to the North.

I'm just following orders.

Do you still not get what I'm saying?

Go and tell them

that I'll deal with Han Myeongwol,

so abort the assassination mission this instant!

You know how serious a crime disobeying an order is.

Do as you're told, unless you want to die.

What the...

Oh?

What do we do? What do we do?

- I'm fine. - You're not fine.

It keeps bleeding.

Hang on.

Tie this around your arm for now.

Thank you.

That's a really expensive scarf.

I bought it directly from that designer when I was in Italy.

- Then... - It's fine. It's dirty now anyway.

So what happened?

Did you get stabbed?

It's just a scratch.

That's not a scratch.

Could be really be a North Korean spy?

No. He looks so innocent.

But if he really is...

I can't let you live, now that you know who I am.

Wait here.

I'll go to the pharmacy and get you some medicine.

Something is off.

Alright.

Wait a minute. Aren't you Ms. Ju Ina?

Probably not. Oh, boy.

I'm not sure anyway.

Um...

Huh?

Where is he?

Comrade Han Myeongwol.

What are you doing?

What's the matter?

Comrade Han Myeongwol.

You promised you would leave Kang Woo alone.

This is a warning.

If you hurt Kang Woo again,

I won't just sit back.

My good feelings for you are all gone now.

I'll live the rest of my life hating and cursing you.

Ina, where have you been?

You're not doing anything foolish like last time, are you?

Let me ask you something.

Who exactly is Choi Ryu?

How did you come to know him,

and what does he do?

You don't need to know. Mind your own business.

You always say that to me.

How is it not my business?

Have you moved on to Choi Ryu after letting go of Kang Woo?

Pardon?

I'm not crazy.

That's a relief.

I'm telling you just in case.

You can't be close to Choi Ryu.

If your pity for him clouds your judgment

and you act like last time,

I won't forgive you.

But why? Why can't I be close to him?

Why can't you be forthright

and tell me the reason?

You'll find out eventually.

This is so frustrating.

My goodness.

So? How did it go?

Do we have the results of the analysis?

- Yes. - Yeah?

So what does that map say?

But the finding were...

What about the findings?

The map was supposed to show locations in Manchuria and Korea...

Yes?

But the findings came out differently this time.

What?

So the expert we first worked with took another look at it,

and he said that something was wrong.

What? That Choi Ryu!

Mr. Ju!

I'm fine. I'm fine.

He messed with the books.

He messed up the "Tetra Codex."

That means...

The data from the original "Tetra Codex" must be saved digitally.

We have no other option if we want to keep him here.

Put the NSA on the line.

Yes, sir.

He won't be able to leave if Han Myeongwol's in danger.

It's so crowed here. We shouldn't be out and about.

But Comrade Myeongwol's probably not eating well.

Who else would take care of her?

She's still our daughter.

But Kang Woo knows who we are now.

I can't see him again.

He's still unconscious.

We can just drop by and see Myeongwol.

National Security! We can never be too secure!

- Wait a minute. - Yes?

Did we leave the gas on?

I think we did.

Wait!

He's so cowardly.

Mr. Kang Woo, the celebrity, is hospitalized here, isn't he?

What is the patient's room number?

This is a warning.

If you hurt Kang Woo again,

I won't just sit back.

Yes?

What?

How much longer will you just lie there?

Where's the conceited, rude, cocky man I know?

Why are you lying there, looking so weak?

Hurry up.

Are you able to do anything right?

Aren't you my bodyguard?

Never mind. Get lost.

If you ever do stuff like this again,

I'll have you fired...

Why are you so jumpy?

I'm fine.

Don't you know I don't eat anything

but the perfect meal with all six major nutrients,

put together by a top nutritionist?

Are you okay?

Yes.

Comrade Kang Woo isn't awake yet?

He'll be up soon.

Of course.

I'm truly sorry for being so selfish.

I understand completely.

Long ago. I agonized between work and love.

I've wronged you and Comrade Huibok.

He said we could make our own decisions.

Major Choi said that.

He said the country is no longer protecting us,

and we should find our own way to live.

Nothing else has happened, right?

Pardon?

Has there been another attempt on your life?

- What do you mean? - You didn't know?

Kang Woo ended up getting hit, but the target was actually you.

Didn't Major Choi tell you?

What?

The North sent a sniper to eliminate you.

Major Choi found out

and gave up his flight out of here.

Is that true?

Yes. It's a relief that you're fine.

Take good care of yourself, okay?

Comrade Huibok is waiting, so I should get going.

Comrade Han Myeongwol.

What are you doing?

Do you know about a Ms. Han Myeonwol...

There she is.

Stop right there! Ms. Han Myeongwol!

Han Myeongwol!

Myeongwol? Myeongwol, why?

- We're in the middle of an investigation. - An investigation?

All you need to do is answer our questions about Ms. Han.

It looks like Mr. Ju finally reported you.

That means the public will catch on soon,

so even if you turn yourself in,

you won't have any peace of mind here.

The North will be after you, too.

The fact that you're a celebrity is working against you.

Are you okay?

I'm sorry.

I doubted you.

About what happened...

You should just worry about yourself right now.

Let's stay at Comrade Huibok's.

It's not the safest place,

but we can stay until we find a better hideout.

No.

Kang Woo! Are you awake? Are you okay?

Nurse!

- What happened? - Don't you remember getting shot?

- Where's Myeongwol? - What?

Myeongwol.

She was here just a while ago.

- She'll be right back. - She's okay, right?

You're the one who got shot. Don't worry about anyone else.

Pardon? So someone really reported her?

I'm sure of it.

It looks like they were after a spy.

What will happen to our Comrade Myeongwol now?

Kang Woo's unconscious, lying in a hospital bed.

Myeongwol's in trouble,

but we're not safe, either.

I think that it's time to make our decision.

Have you decided?

How about this?

I've come up with an ingenious plan.

Pardon?

If one of us turns him or herself in,

Yeah?

and reports the other person,

we'll get liveihood assistance as well as a big reward.

- Pardon? - Think about it.

There's livelihood assistance as well as the $500,0000 reward.

If one of us can endure a short prison term,

we can start over together.

Don't you think it's a good idea?

But who's going to prison?

I thought about that, too.

Today's world is too dangerous for a woman to survive alone.

You should enjoy nutritious prison meals and take a much-needed rest.

You can have those nutritious meals.

I prefer junk food.

I'll take the good care of all the money.

How can I trust you?

- What if you run off with the money? - What do you take me for?

I take you for someone capable of running off with my money.

- What? - Whatever.

Comrade Myeongwol!

We were so worried about you.

What will you do?

Why are things getting more and more dangerous?

We have to stay with you for the time being.

Please let us stay until we find a hideout.

You don't have to ask. Of course you can stay.

That's great,

but if we're all in one place,

we could all get caught like a four-in-one deal...

Good grief.

We're her parents.

But a daughter wouldn't put her parents in danger.

Comrade Myeongwol, don't mind him.

Don't worry about a thing and stay here with us, okay?

- It's me. - So you're still hanging on.

- How is Ms. Han Myeongwol? - Thanks to you...

You should never have messed up the "Tetra Codex."

That's why you reported her?

You'll never be able to take it to the North.

You should face that reality now!

It won't do you any good if we were to get caught.

What?

Don't you want to know the secret contained in the "Tetra Codex?"

The person you're trying to reach...

Why are you getting up? You need to stay in bed.

Where's Myeongwol? Why isn't she here?

- She'll be right back. - You said that a while ago.

Kang Woo.

I have a feeling that something happened to her.

She's fine, Kang Woo. She really is.

The doctor said you had to be careful not to suffer

any permanent damage. You shouldn't move.

I need to make sure Myeongwol's okay.

Okay, Kang Woo. Okay.

I'll bring her here, so that's fine, right?

Please, just rest.

So what are you going to do now?

I have no choice.

You mean...

I'll put him in danger if I stay with him.

I don't want him to suffer because of me.

But once he finds out that you've left,

he'll be in terrible shock.

But if she stay with him, they'll always live in fear.

That's no way to live.

Hey, you two! It's me!

Isn't that Daegang?

Hang on. You stay quiet.

What? She didn't come here, either?

No.

We can't get a hold of her. We're very worried.

Where can she be?

Even when I told her to get some rest,

she insisted on just staying with Kang Woo.

By the way, some strange people came by earlier,

asking me questions about Myeongwol.

Huh?

Really?

Do you know what's going on?

They seemed like cops or detectives.

How should we know?

Why would Myeongwol...

Where is she, anyway?

She might have gone out for some fresh air.

Imagine the shock of that happening at her wedding.

- She'll be back soon. - That's what I think, too,

but Kang Woo keeps asking for her.

Huh? What do you mean?

So Kang Woo regained consciousness now?

Yes.

Oh, that's wonderful. That's really great.

But he's been asking for Myeongwol ever since he woke up.

I didn't tell him people were looking for her, since he would worry.

What can I tell him?

So you decoded the secret contained in the "Tetra Codex?"

The one who has it will stand at the center of the world in a few decades.

In the legendary "Tetra Codex,"

There is an encrypted map.

I know that.

The map points to various locations in Manchuria and the Korean Peninsula,

and there is treasure buried at those locations.

So what is that treasure?

I analyzed the locations

and the contents of the "Tetra Codex,"

to answer that question.

The treasure is...

Is what?

Rare earth elements.

Rare earth elements? You mean...

There are 17 rare chemical elements,

including 15 lanthanoids.

Indispensable components in electric appliances,

as well power plants and high-tech weaponny.

You seem to know well.

You must also know the world is in a frenzy to secure such rare resources.

The map indicates the locations of these rare elements.

The one who has it is going stand at the center of the world.

Rare earth elements. Of course...

If you can obtain exclusive mining rights,

The global economy will be in your hands.

However,

If mining rights are handed over to the government via the NSA,

what will happen?

There's no way they'll give you exclusive mining rights.

- Search him thoroughly. - Yes.

Only a fool would have brought it here.

You can stop.

So what do you want?

Guarantee Han Myeongwol's safe passage to the North.

Why is so quiet?

Is everyone out?

What's this? It's from Kang Woo's showcase.

Myeongwol and Choi?

Fabricated

Actual holder of Han Myeongwol's national identification number

Personal Profile: Choi Ryu

Along with Han Myeongwol, bodyguard of the daughter of Kim Yeongtak,

no. 5-ranking North Korean official

Nationality: North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea)

Job: Secret agent of the Korean People's Army

What? Secret agent?

They're spies?

Even Han Myeongwol?

Where have you been?

How is Comrade Han Myeongwol?

She's okay for now.

When are you leaving for the North?

Comrade Han seems really set on going.

She's of the opinion that she will only put

Kang Woo in harm's way if she were to stay here.

She's not wrong.

Where is she?

Upstairs.

Oh, wait. Did you hear?

Kang Woo has regained consciousness now.

What?

I think that's why she's been even more dejected.

She must miss him terribly.

Get up.

Major Choi.

I'll give you exactly 10 minutes.

Go and see him one last time.

It was wrong of me, a North Korean woman,

to fall in love with a South Korean man.

I should never have even dreamed

of a fairytale ending.

It's a relief seeing you're okay, before I have to leave.

Thank you for everything.

Myeongwol.

Han Myeongwol.

You're awake?

I must have woken you up.

Where have you been?

I've been looking for you.

What do you mean? I'm right here.

Everything is fine, right? Nothing is wrong, right?

Don't go anywhere, and stick close to me.

I will.

I think I can live, now that you're here.

Let's have the wedding as soon as I get discharged.

I'll make up for the pain you're going through a hundred times over.

You promise?

Go back to sleep. You need to rest.

Han Myeongwol?

No way.

How can Myeongwol...

What about Myeongwol?

Kang Woo, you're awake?

Be honest with me.

Something is up, right?

Nothing is up.

You're lying.

Some strange men came by, asking about Myeongwol.

And Myeongwol couldn't be found or reached that day.

Something seemed strange.

Don't be shocked.

They said Myeongwol's a spy.

What's going on? You were supposed to be at the hospital.

What bring you here?

Are you okay?

Shouldn't you be resting?

Where's Myeongwol? Where is she?

Huh?

Let me see Myeongwol.

- She's not here. - What?

She was here just a while ago,

but Choi Ryu took her away.

Took her away? Where to?

He didn't think it was safe for her here.

- So where did they go? - We don't know.

Do you really not know,

or are you keeping it from me on purpose?

We really don't know.

Well, since you know everything, we'll be forthright with you.

They're going into hiding until they can find a ship

that will take them back to the North.

But they didn't tell us more. They said it was better not to know.

To the North?

Don't look for Myeongwol.

Your love is just not feasible.

You'll only make it harder for Myeongwol.

I can't stand this. I feel sorry for him.

Where are we?

Comrade Kang Woo and I spent the night here,

when we were stranded on that stormy night.

Will you be okay at a place like this?

I'm fine.

Just bear with it. It won't be long.

Don't worry.

I'll get some firewood.

Thank you...

For being there for me in time of trouble.

I've always been there for you.

Kang Woo woke up?

Do you have any news of Han Myeongwol?

No, sir.

Kang Woo

Well, hello.

I heard you regained consciousness now.

I was thinking of calling to congratulate you.

You seem to be in good health.

Thank you for your concern.

Don't mention it.

When I woke up, I learned you had broken your promise.

Don't blame me.

Choi Ryu failed to give me the "Tetra Codex" in its original state.

- I had no choice. - No choice?

That's always your excuse.

You took away from me everyone I hold dear.

I won't let you get away with it this time.

Are you threatening me?

What can you do, anyway?

I'll let the world know how you killed my father

and watch you crumble before my very eyes.

What?

I've gone easy on you, given our long shared history.

What can you do about something that happened 20 years ago?

Plus, you don't have any evidence that it was me.

I've spent many years looking for you.

You think I wouldn't have any evidence?

I planned to let it all go for Myeongwol's sake,

but now,

you're going down.

Bring the "Tetra Codex" if you don't want to die - Troll

so he does have something.

He wasn't bluffing.

But I was told any evidence linking me to the incident had been destroyed.

- Mr. Yun - Yes.

- Bring Han Myeongwol to me. - Pardon?

She'll be my only leverage against him.

Actually, I can get both Kang Woo and Choi Ryu if I have her.

Doesn't this remind you of the old days?

I was training in the woods

to make it into the Special Ops unit.

Back then, you would scold me left and right.

Comrade Han Myeongwol!

Find something else to do, if this is how you're going to be.

You're not fit for Special Ops unit.

I'll make it. You just watch.

I should have listen to you, and quit right then and there.

I really must not be fit to be a Special Ops agent.

I always drag you down.

Why didn't you just throw me away and leave?

I told you.

When your father asked me to take care of you,

I swore I would until the day I die.

That's an order I've given to myself.

My last order.

Are you insane?

You shouldn't be out and about like this.

Does your doctor know you're out?

Just be quiet and sit down.

You look sick. I'm worried.

Are you okay?

Do you know where Choi Ryu is?

How should I know?

Let me ask you a question.

Did you know?

About what?

About those two...

About who are they are...

How do you know?

You knew, and yet...

- She was going to turn herself in. - What?

Myeongwol planned to turn herself in.

That's why I need to find her now.

- Myeongwol is gone. - So?

Help me.

How can I help you find her? There's no way.

I'm sorry.

I didn't know who else to turn to.

Alright.

Is Choi Ryu with her, by any chance?

Most likely.

I'll try.

I'll give it a go.

I think I can get Choi Ryu to come here.

My granddad wants to see you right away.

What is it? Why is Mr. Ju looking for me?

I'm sorry.

It wasn't granddad. It's someone else.

Where's Myeongwol?

Let me see her.

The danger that Han Myeongwol is in...

Do you know?

Please let me see her.

I can't just let her go like this. I beg you.

Forget about her for your own sake.

That's what Comrade Han Myeongwol wants, too.

You must know exactly how I feel.

I miss her more than I can say.

Without her, I'll die.

They're hiding somewhere on this mountain.

Search thoroughly!

Yes, sir.

Do you have any idea how funny you look right now?

What are you doing?

I should look at these for a laugh when I feel down.

Han Myeongwol.

I found you.
