That just by being what you
already are,

enormous pride to our country.

Goooood morning, atlanta!

Thorbourne: It was just a really
exciting time in atlanta.

We were flooded
with tourists.

[ singing in foreign languages ]

All the activities
were being flashed

Across the news stories
every day, every night.

Volleyball! One!
Right now.

I never attended
any olympic event.

The tickets
were hard to come by.

That's why
centennial olympic park

Was such a great opportunity

To enjoy
the olympic festivities.

Reporter: Today at
centennial park,

There were spontaneous displays
of national fervor.

Thorbourne:
There was a stage, and there
were multiple performers.

Reporter: The world is here.

Thorbourne:
It was just a buzz of activity

Man:
Atlantans are very friendly.

We just find the security's
a bit of a grind,

But I suppose
it's got to be there.

Jewell: When the olympics came,
richard was out of a job.

His desire was always
to become a policeman.

He took every course
that he could take

At the police academy.

He was with several police
here in atlanta

Up at piedmont college.

He did say, "mom, do you think
I can get on at the olympics?"

And I said, "with your
experience, they'd be a fool

Not to accept you."

Richard got the job.

He worked security
at centennial park,

And his post was an at&t tower

Right opposite the stage.

He loved it.

[ cheers and applause ]

Thorbourne:
My co-workers convinced me

To come out on the evening
of July 26th.

It was incredibly festive,
and everybody was happy.

Kinnison:
I've been watching the olympics

Ever since I was a child.

You could feel the excitement
in the air.

It's the only time
in my life

That I would ever get
to experience that.

Man:
It's spelling "atlanta."

When we went to
the centennial park that Friday,

I don't remember there being
any kind of bag check,

But we weren't worried
about security at all.

The atmosphere was great.

No trouble.

It was just a good vibe.

Party of the century,
baby!

Hell yeah!

Tubbs: We definitely
took security seriously,

But nobody at that time worried

That someone would really
have the nerve and desire

To disrupt
the international games.

♪♪

It was late. [ chuckles ]

The kids were having
such a good time

That we just ended up staying.

I'd never thought
something would happen.

[ indistinct chatter ]

Dispatcher: 911, what is your
emergency?

Woman: We got an address
at centennial park.

I just got this man called,
talking about

Some kind of craziness,
that there's a bomb

Set to go off in 30 minutes
in centennial park.

Woman: Oh, lord, child.
[ chuckles ]

Thorbourne:
After a few hours of walking
and talking and laughing,

I said, "hey, y'all, I have to
get back and go to work.

I'm tired.
Let's head back to the car."

Kinnison: We had come from
behind the stage area.

We were right in front
of the rail

There where the band
was playing.

The band was
jack mack & the heart attack.

I'll never forget that.

I was filming.
I was actually zoomed in

On the lead singer.

So, right about now,
we have to...

We have to tell you there's
a warning that there's --

[ explosion ]

What the [audio drop]
was that?

We have to tell you there's
a warning that there's --

Thorbourne: I felt the wind move
from left to right,

And I just felt like
a little punch in the leg.

[ echoing explosion ]

Kinnison:
That's the loudest explosion

That I've ever heard.

Jewell: The phone rang,

And it was richard

Saying that there had been
a bomb,

He was okay,
and he was doing fine.

He was excited in the fact
that the bombing had happened.

And he said,
"mom I found the bag

And started pushing people out."

Thorbourne: It went from a loud
festive environment

Minute to complete silence,
and I realized at that moment

Something terrible has happened.

Kinnison: There's nothing
that can prepare you for it.

We walked over

Toward where the bomb
had gone off

And I see people on the ground.

[ indistinct chatter ]

Thorbourne:
I look to my friends,

And one of them was bleeding
profusely from his leg.

One had shrapnel in his arm.
He was bleeding.

[ sirens wailing ]

You...Hear people.
You hear them hollering.

You hear them screaming.

There were a lot
of people that got hurt.

Thorbourne:
I had to check myself.

Oh, wow,
the left side of my jeans

Were soaked with blood.

And I lift up my right leg,

And it looked like
just a chunk of skin

Was just missing
from the back of my right leg.

I started to apply pressure,

And I guess that's at the point
when someone took a photograph.

Move!
Evacuate the area, please.

Back that way now.

[ sirens continue ]

I have seen ambulances.

I cannot tell you
if there's been any injuries.

We do not know the extent
of this explosion,

But an explosion has occurred

Here at centennial olympic park.

Schuster: I was deep in rem
sleep and got a phone call.

"something has happened
in centennial park.

You to come in right away."

You can hear the whoop whoop
whoop of sirens.

Blue flashes lighting
up the sky.

Absolute chaos.

We were interviewing people
who were investigators.

One of them said, "it's a bomb.
This isn't

A natural gas explosion.
It's a bomb."

Reporter: It has been
confirmed as a bombing

And is being considered
a terrorist act by the fbi.

Schuster:
What you heard was that
the security guard --

His name was richard jewell, had
spotted a suspicious backpack,

Alerted the gbi agent.

Man: We were very lucky
that a very alert security guard

Saw what he recognized
as suspect

And reacted positively.

Did exactly
the right thing.

Ordered people
out of there

And summoned help
from other police.

It was exactly
the correct thing to do.

This guy might be
the story of the games --

The hero who prevented
dozens of people from dying.

And I turned to
somebody behind me

Who was with our
guests bookings unit

And said, "find him."

Bryant: Richard called me.
He let me know

He was the one that found
the bomb.

I first met richard
when I was a lawyer

At the u.S.
Small business administration.

We got to be buddies.

Maybe it is
an unlikely friendship,

But I like the guy.

And I of course
congratulated him

And told him what a great guy
he was for saving so many lives.

Then he told me that he agreed
to be interviewed for cnn.

The first person to catch sight
of the suspicious knapsack

That turned out to contain
the bomb

Was security officer
richard jewell.

Mr. Jewell is joining us
from our studio in atlanta.

What was it, mr. Jewell,

That first
attracted your attention?

We had some activity
in front of

The sound
and light tower.

Gentlemen
were being obnoxious

And disturbing
some of the crowd

That was trying
to enjoy a concert,

And I spotted the bag laying
on the ground under the bench.

We tried to get as many people
out of the area as we could.

We got about 150 people
off the grass area

Right directly in front
of the bomb

Before it exploded.

Man: Whoa...

The only thing I wish
we could have done was

Got everybody
out of the area.

I feel for the victims

And their families.

Man: Flags are being lowered
to the half-staff

At the olympic stadium.
That's not the kind of thing

That we wanted to see in
atlanta, is it.

Martz: There were
rumors starting to go around

That they may cancel some
events.

They may be closing down
the games for a while.

Any questions?

Tubbs: The idea
that we shut something down

Because of an event
like the bomb

Diminished the united states.

The games will go on.

I repeat --
the games will go on.

We can't give in.

The fbi had to start finding out
who did this and why.

We are continuing
to examine evidence

And following up
on a substantial amount

Of information
that we are receiving.

Looking at
personnel workers --

That sort of thing?

At this point the investigation,

Everyone would be looked at.

I mean, this is the olympics.

It's supposed to be a time
of joy for the world,

And it's a very,
very bad thing.

And I just hope that we catch
the people that did it.

Explosion in the park!

Clinton: Good morning.

The bombing
at centennial olympic park

This morning was an evil
act of terror,

An act of cowardice
that stands in sharp contrast

To the courage
of the olympic athletes.

It sent shock waves
around the world,

And the repercussions
are certain to be felt

For years to come.

A bomb rocked the site
of the olympic games.

A 44-year-old woman
from albany, georgia,

Was killed in that blast.

A photographer
from turkish state television

Suffered a fatal heart attack

As he ran to cover the scene.

111 other people were injured.

Man: Authorities said the device
appeared to be a pipe bomb

Loaded with nails and screws.

Kinnison: I realized that world
had come to our door.

I can't imagine
having to live my life every day

Knowing something like
that might happen to you.

It dawned on me that we
basically

Had a human shield

Between us and that bomb --

Is what kept us
from being hurt.

And you just thank the lord
that...

That we weren't involved in it.

[ voice breaking indistinctly ]

[ breathes shakily ]

Reporter: We don't know
the bomber's face,

But alice hawthorne,
the woman he killed,

Was a loving wife
and mother.

Fallon, her daughter,
was also injured at the scene.

The family's cafe
was named after her.

Words could not possibly
describe

How much I miss my mom.

Thorbourne:
I don't know why her and not me

Or any of the other 111-so
people that were injured --

I'm just thankful and grateful

That I was only hit in my legs.

It could've been so much worse.

It was a traumatic experience,
you know.

I still jump a little

When I hear a loud popping
sound.

Reporter: While this is tragic,

It could've been much worse

According to what law
enforcement sources tell us.

So a lot of credit has to go
to an at&t security guard.

It was just a matter of minutes
after I got them out

That it exploded.

Martz: Richard jewell became
and overnight media sensation.

Jewell:
I don't think in the first week
that I hardly ever hit the bed.

I was glued to the tv,
and he was, too.

If I ever get close to them,
they'll --

He'll be turned in.

I was very proud

That he knew his job
inside and out.

Reporter: Terror strikes
one of the world's largest

Peacetime events.

Are investigators any closer
to finding out

Who was behind
the deadly bombing

At centennial olympic park?

Tubbs: In the first few days,

The fbi begin to get a sense

That it was not

Some sort of international
terrorism incident.

It was more likely
it was domestic terrorism,

And it was more likely it was

An individual who was involved.

Tubbs: The fbi at that time
was very aware

Of issues with the militia.

A lot of them were just upset

With the government.
Man: You're racists!

They hated the way things
were going the united states.

Bastards!

[ sanderson's
"hail to the chief" plays ]

Schuster: From 1990 to 1996,

A lot of changes began.

Not change
for change's sake

But change to preserve
america's ideals.

So you had the election
of bill clinton.

We know we have
to face hard truths

And take strong steps.

A fervor sort of picked top

Among the far right.

"he's coming
to take away our guns."

The threats that were seen
more externally

Became more internalized.

You had right-wing extremism,

You had anti-abortion christian
identity groups springing up...

It's not a legal right
to kill a baby!

It's a legal wrong!

...You had the standoff
at ruby ridge,

Then you had waco.

Then the worst of all
was oklahoma city.

Reporter:
Busy downtown oklahoma city

Became a deadly war zone
in a matter of seconds.

Schuster:
I flew to oklahoma city
shortly after it happened.

It was hard to comprehend
that someone would do that

And kill children, too.

Schuster: Suddenly, you had
a huge internal threat.

America was being attacked
from within.

Tubbs: The fbi had contacts
with those types of groups.

We never received any message
from the bomber

Claiming responsibility.

It was absolutely quiet.

At that point, all we had was
the 911 call.

Quote, "there is a bomb
in centennial park.

You have 30 minutes."

Police are looking for a person

They believe to be
a white male american

With a quote,
"light southern accent."

Tubbs: We determined where
the phone call was made from,

And we sent evidence technicians

To check for fingerprints
on the phone.

No fingerprints were discovered.

You have to remember,
this is 1996.

It's not like it is today
where we have cameras

In quite a few places
throughout cities,

And thus there were
no cameras to look at.

We continue
to be interested in hearing

From anyone who may have been
in that area

And who may have heard

Or seen something
at that time --

Approximately 1:00 a.M.

Tubbs: We had some people
come in from quantico

To see if they could
provide a profile for us.

Unfortunately, they didn't have
much to work with.

25 to 35 years old,

Someone who's looking for
attention --

Harshly guesswork on their part.

It's a common thing

That someone who is involved
in a crime reports it.

Look at what happened
at the l.A. Olympics.

Reporter: There's graphic
evidence this morning

That all those fears
about terrorism at the olympics

Were not misplaced.

An alert los angeles policeman
last night

Found a ticking time bomb

Aboard the bus carrying baggage

For the turkish olympic team

As the bus was being unloaded
at los angeles airport.

Tubbs: A bomb was found
underneath the bus.

A police officer found it
and said he diffused it.

Tubbs: And it turned out that
the officer who noted it

And got people out of the way
was the one who put it there.

Reporter: Officer jimmy pearson
has allegedly confessed

To planting the device

So that he could later find it
and impress his superiors.

Tubbs: So, it's not uncommon
that people do something

To draw attention to themselves.

And richard jewell is the one
who found the backpack.

So obviously, you have to look
at this person very closely.

We got this call
from a previous employer

Saying, "I might have
some good information for you."

Richard jewell had lost his job

Working for the college,
gotten in trouble

For making some traffic
stops off campus.

What that did was add
more fuel

To the need
to determine jewell's status.

Martz: My reporting partner
came in, saying,

"I know who they think
did the bombing.

It was that security guard

Who found the bomb."

"you're kidding."

Schuster: That's when just
a world of hurt

Really started for richard.

Man: The international
olympic committee

Asks you to stand and join us
in a moment of silence.

Reporter: A moment of silence
in remembrance

Of a moment of violence.

Reporter:
Meanwhile, investigators
working around the clock

To find the person
or persons responsible

For more than 100 injuries
and two fatalities.

Martz: Once we found out

That the fbi was looking at
richard jewell,

They decided to do
an extra edition of the paper

That afternoon to get it out
on the street

Before anybody else had it.

Jewell:
It was just a lot of confusion

Out front in the parking lot.

I had no idea what was going on.

He loves police work.

So it's just natural
for him to do it.

Tubbs: The media were already
camped out

At jewell's apartment.

We don't want to ruin
the opportunity

To continue
the investigation of him.

Man: Hey, what are you guys
doing here?

Reporter: A short while ago,

Two men arrived
at a buford highway apartment.

At least one of them we
recognized as an fbi agent.

A short while later,
they come out

And so did the man
identified as richard jewell.

Tubbs: Mr. Jewell was asked to
come in to do an interview.

[ indistinct chatter ]

Jewell, what have they
told you?

Are they letting you
go to work?

You're letting you go to work?
You're free to go?

-Yeah.
-What do you what do you think

Of the appearance
that people now feel

That you are a prime suspect?

Tubbs: He wasn't under arrest.

He came in voluntarily.
He had his own vehicle.

Did they tell you now
not to leave town?

-No.
-You're free to go

Wherever you want?
-Yes.

-Okay.
-I'm not a suspect.

It's the latest story!

Bryant: I saw an atlanta journal
special edition newspaper

The headline that said,

"fbi suspects 'hero' guard
may have planted bomb.

I was aghast.

Tubbs:
He came in for the interview.

I'm a special agent
with the fbi.

Someone had told him that
for training purposes,

They'd like to film it.

That would've gone

To the psychological
profiling people.

I present you
with this form.

I'd like you to
kind of read it over.

Tell me if you understand
everything that's on that form.

I was on the phone
with the director,

And he said,
"give him his rights."

I don't know if I should
call an attorney now or not,

'cause I don't know
if this video is for --

I don't know if I'm being
investigated for this

Or if this is for what you have
told me it is for.

Would it be all right for me
to call my attorney?

Bryant:
They put him on the phone,

And I said to him,
"have you read the newspaper?

It says, 'fbi suspects "hero"
guard...

[chuckling]
may have planted the bomb.'

What do you think about that?"

And then I told richard
to get his ass out of there.

An olympic security guard

Is a suspect
in last Saturday's bombing,

According to a special edition

Of the atlanta journal
constitution today.

The guard's name
is richard jewell,

A 33-year-old
former sheriff's deputy.

Schuster: There's a difference
between thinking theoretically,

"oh, they might consider me
a suspect,"

To, "I am the suspect."

And I think it probably
didn't even dawn on him

Until he saw the sea of
reporters waiting for him.

Man: Let him out,
let him out, let him out.

Man:
Have you been to the fbi?

Any comment, richard?

[ indistinct chatter ]

-Did you do it?
-Can you categorically say

That you did not do this?

-Categorically?
-Yes.

Why are they
questioning you?

-As part of --
-can you stop

So we can talk to you?

Where were you at 1:00
on that morning?

Schuster: You know,
that video's running

Over and over and over

And over again...
[ indistinct chatter ]

Hour after hour,
maybe even every 10 minutes

Of richard fighting his way
through the swarm of reporters.

-Can you stop for a second?
-Did they say you're a suspect?

Who doesn't look guilty
that way?

Woman:
Stop for a second.

We're suddenly seeing him
in a different light.

The hero becomes the zero.
Man: Let him through.

Let him through.

[ chatter continues ]

Jewell: You could tell that he
had a lot on his mind,

And he said, "mom,
don't ask me another question,"

And I didn't.

Man:
Can you stop to talk to us?

I'm sure everyone
that works in the area

Or that came by the areas
is being investigated.

How does it feel
on one end

To be treated
like a hero in the morning

And then find out that the fbi
considers you a suspect?

Well, to be honest
with you,

Hearing that from y'all,

I don't know
if that's fact or fiction

Until I speak with
one of them about that.

Do you have have any way
of knowing

Why they would consider
you a suspect?

No, I have no idea.

Did you do it?

No, sir, I didn't do this.

Bryant: By the time
that I got there,

He and bobi were
basically shell-shocked

That every single tv station

Is blaring out that he was

The suspected olympic park
bomber.

Reporter: Jewel reportedly
fits a classic bomber profile --

Single male, a drifter cop

Fired from at least one job
turned security guard

And suddenly is a hero
for discovering a bomb.

-Can you turn around?
-Where were you --

Bryant: I told him,
"I want to know.

Did you do it?"

And he said, "absolutely not."

And I believed him.

I told all the reporters
out there that they were...

Barking up
the wrong tree with this.

No, I don't think richard
will be arrested.

But then the next day,

The fbi got a search warrant.

Reporter: Richard jewell
sitting by

As federal agents
put the screws on.

Bryant:
The media made it a big search.

Reporter:
It is a painstaking process,

Looking for the smallest
piece of evidence.

Bryant: It was a search --

Something that the fbi
does 1,000 times a day.

It was a hell of a show

That the fbi put on
when they searched his place.

Jewell:
They took over my apartment.

Bryant: They just tore
that place apart.

Jewell: They took the flour
out of my tupperware.

The sugar out of the tupperware.

It's a wonder they didn't take
the damn food

Out of the refrigerator.

I was so mad, so insulted...

[voice breaking]
so humiliated before the world

That they would do this
to a human being,

But they did.

The search is part of an ongoing
investigative process

And does not indicate in any way
that mr. Jewel has been charged

With a crime
under our system of justice.

Mr. Jewel has been fully
cooperative.

We emphasize that neither

The issuance of a search warrant

Nor the execution of it
constitutes evidence of guilt.

Reporter: The 33-year-old
security guard

Who friends say pursue
publicity attention,

Tonight at all pursues him.

Bryant: Our posture on this
was to cooperate.

It'll only take a couple of days
and this storm will blow by,

Man: Have they found anything
inside, to your knowledge?

No, no, and I don't think
they're gonna, either.

And frankly,
we welcome this

Because then this thing
is gonna be over.

That's what we're
looking forward to.

I wanted to know --

Why are they doing this?

What is it that I don't know?

There's got to be something

Besides the fact that this guy

Found the bomb.

Reporter: When richard jewell's
mother, barbara,

Returned home tonight,
cameras rolled.

Reporters watched the jewel
second-floor apartment --

A revolving door of fbi agents.

Jewell: From then on,
it was -- excuse my french --

Extreme hell at our place.

Reporter:
Reporters from around the world

Who came to cover the games

Were covering the bombing story
instead.

The fbi have searched
the home of the security guard

Who originally alerted police

To the bomb
in the centennial olympic park.

Jewell: We couldn't go out
the front door.

You couldn't go down the steps.

Man: Mrs. Jewell,
how's your son holding up?!

They were as desperate vultures
that I have ever seen.

Reporter:
Jewel had a sheriff's deputy's
badge from habersham county,

But it turns out he was never
a certified officer --

Just a jailer.

Jewell: Every day,
something else would come up,

And I guess
the best had gotten of me

And I said, "richard
did you do it?"

Then he said, "oh, mom,
give me a break.

You know I didn't do this."

But you know, I'm going,
"why were they doing this?"

Bryant: After a while,
it's like f-you, man.

What's your feeling
about this?

I think that richard jewell
is getting screwed.

It was time to take the offense
on these guys,

And that's what we did.

An innocent man
is still being crucified.

We put together
a team of people.

We got the fbi's own former
number-one lie detector guy.

We got richard
do a lie detector test.

Man: Did you do it?

Reporter: Can you categorically
say that you did not do this?

Reporter:
What was it, mr. Jewell, that
first attracted your attention?

Categorically?

Man: The result of that were
unquestionable and inconclusive,

So my conclusion was that
he's totally innocent

Of any connection
with that pipe bomb

That went off in the park.

Martz:
The big turning point for me

Came when one of our reporters

Decided to walk from the phone

Where the 911 call had been made

Down to the olympic park

To see if richard jewell

Could have made the call

And then walk to the park

In enough time to warn people
away from the bomb.

It would've been
physically impossible.

There was just too much distance
between the two places.

We've got to tell people.

I want to
tell you of some of the impact

That these last four weeks

Have had upon my life
and richard's life.

Jewell: They felt like the world
needed to know.

I am also here
to make a personal plea

To the president
of the united states and you

To help us end this nightmare

So that we can begin to pick up
the pieces of our lives

And move forward.

Please tell the world.

mr. President...

[ crying ]
please clear my son today.

Jewell: I just wanted
him to know

What little piece of the world
I had left.

It was hard, hard, hard.

Reporter: The guilt
or innocence of richard jewell.

It's become part of
america's national dialogue.

Is the hero
who became a suspect

Really the centennial park
bomber,

Or is he an innocent man?

Whose life and future
are now ruined

By the fbi and the media?

Tubbs: You can imagine if we
discounted someone

In any investigation

After a less-than-thorough
review of everything

And it turned out
six months later

That this was the person
who did it.

Shame on you. That's why
you have to look at everything.

Bryant: It slowly dawned on me
they ain't got nothing here.

They're just doing this
to cover their own butts.

They did it until they couldn't
get away with it any longer

Because they were being
ridiculed so much in the media.

They finally had to give it up.

Jewell: It was in October
when my cell phone rang

And it was watson saying,
"it's over."

[ voice breaking ] and we all
had a small prayer for that.

It was a long time coming,

As far as I was concerned.

Reporter: It was an emotional
richard jewell

Who spoke to reporters

After being formally cleared
of any involvement

In the atlanta
olympic park bombing

In its rush to show the world

How quickly it could get
its man,

The fbi trampled on my rights
as a citizen.

In its rush for the headline

That the hero was the bomber,

The media cared nothing
for my feelings

As a human being.

For 88 days, my mother lived
a nightmare, too.

Mom...

Thanks for standing by me...

[voice breaking]
and believing in me.

Reporter: On October 26th,

Jewell's name
was officially cleared

But no other suspects
have been named.

Reporter: Sources say fbi morale
is at an all-time low

In the trenches of the park
bombing investigation.

Countless men, hours
dedicated to richard jewell

As the prime focus
have been in vain.

Tubbs: If you let yourself get
down because a case got away,

You can't keep doing your job.

So you're going to continue

Doing everything they can
to resolve it.

Kennedy: We have made a lot of
progress in the investigation,

But we still continue to seek

The public's assistance
in this case.

But if that point, the bomber
never did another bombing,

Possibly that person
could have gotten away with it.

It was a chaotic situation.

People running for their lives
after a bomb explodes

At a professional
building in sandy springs.

The building was trembling
and this huge explosion

And we ran down the stairs
and deep smell of gunpowder

On the first floor
and a lot of smoke

And we just kept running.

Ran across the street and...
[ explosion ]

Reporter: 45 minutes after
the first bomb exploded,

A second one went off near a
dumpster near the building.

Six people were injured.

Daulton: The bombing at the
clinic was not at that time

Linked to the olympic park
bombing.

Reporter: Perhaps most
troubling, police say,

Was the timing of today's
explosions --

The stronger
of the two set to go off

Just after
federal agents arrived.

Daulton: We really weren't sure

Who were looking for
at the time.

Obviously somebody
who had an agenda,

But we're not sure whether
it was a group,

An individual, or what.

The latest attack happened
outside a northeast atlanta

Gay and lesbian bar.
Several were injured.

No one was killed.

A second device was also planted
outside the club.

Daulton: After the bombing at
the otherside lounge occurred,

It seemed to me that it was
the same type of bombing

At sandy springs clinic.

The device was very similar.

We were able to determine
that the sheet metal

In each of the devices
came from the same foundry,

But they also used
the same sheet metal

As did the olympic park bombing.

I was really surprised.

They all came from one sheet.

After months
of investigating these bombings,

Why are you now confident

That there may be a link
between them?

Well, we believe
there's a strong possibility

There is a link
between them that --

And is basically, it's based
on forensic evidence.

Daulton: The urgency was to
convince everybody

That as long as there were
abortion clinics...

[ explosion ]

...As long as there were gay
and lesbian night clubs...

[ explosion ]

...There was a good possibility

That this was not over
and it would continue.

Nearly a year after the blast
at the olympics,

The fbi now says it's
increasingly confident

Of a link between that bomb

And two other bombings
in atlanta --

One at an abortion clinic,
the other at a gay nightclub.

We're appealing to you
to provide

Whatever information
you may have

So that we can assure that
no one else is killed or injured

By these senseless acts
of violence.

Reporter: A bomb packed with
dynamite and nails

Exploded outside a birmingham
abortion clinic.

All the way back.

It killed a security guard
and maimed a nurse.

[ siren wailing ]

Daulton: When I heard about
the birmingham bombing,

I was pretty sure it was the
same individual or group.

A college student
heard the explosion,

And there was one individual

Walking the opposite direction
very calmly.

That's not right.

He saw him get in the car,

And he was able to get
the driver's license number.

When they ran his plate, they
came up the name and an address.

Swecker: Eric rudolph of murphy,
north carolina.

By the time the fbi
got to his house,

He disappeared.

There was
still food on the stove.

He had just left.

Agents did interviews and
searched the cabin.

His friends revealed that he was
very anti-abortion,

Anti-gay, anti-government.

He had been in the military,
although he was kicked out.

He became the lone wolf
that he was

Because he felt like the
government sponsored abortions,

Supported the gay lifestyle.

He was named a top 10 fugitive

Then fled into the mountains.

The fbi today charged rudolph

In the olympic park bombing

And released this picture.

Man: He is not merely
wanted for questioning.

He should be considered armed
and very dangerous

And private citizens
should not take any action

To attempt to apprehend him.

Swecker: The fbi started
an international fugitive hunt,

Very much focused
on western north carolina.

Helicopters patrolling,
people walking the rails,

Over 1,000 law enforcement
personnel

Looking for eric rudolph.

Reporter: It's like finding
a needle in a haystack.

There are an infinite
number of trails,

And the woods are so thick,
visibility is 100 yards at best.

Swecker: Your average local
person I think saw this

As a david-and-goliath
kind of thing --

Eric rudolph against
the entire federal government.

Woman:
A lot of people support him.

I mean, he bombed
a baby murdering clinic.

I mean, I'm supporting him.
[ chuckles ]

Reporter: Federal agents insist
they'll keep at it

Until they find their man
or he gives himself up.

Swecker: Jeff postell had been
on the force about eight months.

He's patrolling the parking lot

Of a local
grocery store in murphy

And sees someone hanging around
the dumpster area.

He really didn't have
any good reason to arrest him,

But he stopped him

And took him into
temporary custody at that point.

Daulton: Rudolph was located
pilfering through a dumpster

In murphy, north carolina.

Rudolph's identity was confirmed
by fbi this morning.

Swecker: He was a little bit
arrogant to begin with,

But at some point
the air came out of him.

Reporter: Rudolph now admits...
[ explosion ]

...He committed the infamous
olympic park bombing

As well as three other bombs,

Killing two and injuring more
than 100 people.

Reporter: Rudolph said
he bombed the olympics

To quote, "embarrass
the washington government

In the eyes of the world
for sanctioning abortion."

Rudolph will be sentenced
in July.

He'll serve a life sentence
in a prison run

By the government he hated.

Jewell:
When rudolph admitted to it,

It kind of laid down

That richard was telling
the truth,

But I wish he had come clean
a long time before that.

Bryant: You know, there's still
people to this day

That when they're asked
about richard jewell.

It's like, "oh, oh, he's the guy

That was
the olympic park bomber.

Oh, he's the guy
that got away with it."

Schuster: I worry that we've not
learned the lessons

Of richard jewell.
And what makes it worse now

Is we're in an environment
with social media.

The rush to judgment is quicker.

Before,
it was a screw-up of the fbi.

That was amplified
by the media.

Now, it seems we don't
even need

Either of those people
in the game.

Of course, I thought about it.

We found richard,
we put them on the air,

And we set off
that chain of events.

I've started writing
a letter of apology to him,

And I felt horrible
for never finishing it.

"even when we got things right,
we did wrong by you,

And I'm sorry."

Martz: I don't regret
the article that we did.

The only thing that I regret
is that we were not able

To put
that all of our information

Was coming from
law enforcement sources.

Richard, unfortunately,
was caught

In this perfect storm of events.

If this had happened anywhere
else other than the olympics,

It wouldn't have gotten
anywhere near

The notoriety that it did.
