That's when I knew
enough's enough.

But, again,
they tell me that's normal,

and I knew in my bones
I was gonna lose him.

Complex systems are in place,

by years of research

And ordinary citizens do not
get to substitute theirjudgment

for that
of the professionals

and start waving a loaded gun
around to prove it.

what would be
the end game?

and I go there and tell them
it's still hurting.

They check me out,
tell me all is fine.

They ask me
about my pain index.

I say I am at a 5.

And they zip in
with a bottle of Oxy

and ask if I want a prescription
for another one,

in case I need it.

And you're both on
the same insurance plan?

Of course.
We get it through our employer.

I mean,
I never would've known

about the difference
in treatment

if I hadn't happened
to mention it to Elise at work.

But then I did
my own research,

and I found that this is a trend
all over the country.

Black people being perceived

to have a higher tolerance
for pain.

That's why I felt like
I had to bring the suit.

And the settlement?

It wasn't for much.

What I wanted was
for them to make some changes.

Of course,
they put it in writing.

How they were going to
look at their protocols,

have sensitivity training.

designed to close the gap

between private
well-funded hospitals like yours

and the county hospital

And based on the idea
of that fund,

to get their hands
on some of that money,

for funds from the ICP?

Well, 18% of the people who
come into our emergency rooms

the indigent community.
