There's one thing you should keep in mind

Until the set date, don't tell anyone about this

Don't ever mention this to anyone

Even to your wife.

In fact, regardless of my warning, it'd be hard for you to bring it up anyway

What do you mean?

If Cho Ok eats the liver of a girl who'll become ten years old in three months,

Cho Ok could live.

Episode 2

Mom, that girl we saw, she had this weird gaze!

LIke she was possessed...

Don't talk about her like that!

Didn't you think it was strange? Her eyes, like this!

Anyway, mom, are we taking a boat?

Yes we are!

I love going on boats!

What is it?

I think I hear something.

What?

Like horses are coming.

We're running out of time, let's hurry.

My lord! My lord!

My lord, they say Mrs. Gusan and the girl went that way.

Looks like they're taking a boat.

We'll catch them soon, please don't worry.

Let's go!

Stop,

Excuse me?

Just let them go. Mrs. Gusan and her girl.

But what you're saying is...

Didn't you hear me!

Just let them get away as far as they can!

Yes my lord.

You found the child.

A chlld born on the day, month and year of the Rat.

How do you know that?

Your sudden visit is telling, even for an ignorant retch like me.

Anyhow, you were lucky to find her.

It may not be the right child.

If Cho Ok opened her eyes,

there is no doubt that it is that girl.

Is it that you don't want her to be the right one?

Do you blame me?

Then you can just let that child go.

Let her go free with her mother.

Ah, you already did that.

Is your conscience more important than Cho Ok's life?

You bastard!

It all came to this because of you! You!

Human life is the most precious thing ever.

But...

How can I kill some other child, even if she's a servant's child, and take her liver to save my own!

How can I do something so vile, so inhumane!

What are you staring at?

You're right, my lord.

What! Lord Yoon is condoning the suspect?

Yes sir, he kicked us out, abusing his status, we were powerless.

Then, as soon as they stepped out of the house...

Arrest them immediately!

Yes sir!

So Yoon's trying to rub me the wrong way, huh?

Magistrate!

Those two left Lord Yoon's house!

Yeon!

Be careful!

Yeon!

Are you okay?

Mother...

You hide here, don't make a sound.

No, I want to go with you!

No you can't, if we go together we'll both get caught,

I'll come back soon, you stay put.

Be quiet like a mouse!

There's a girl here!

Where is your mother!

I asked you, where is she?!

I'm here!

I'm this child's mother.

My lord

What if the shaman's right?

It's going to be alright, right?

I really wanted to find a way to keep our child alive,

What are you talking about?

Ah, nothing, it's nothing.

My lord,

My lord!

what is it?

Mrs. Gusan and her daughter have been arrested.

What!

Mother! Mother!

Theres a witness who saw your daughter carrying around Lord Park's marble,

Mother! Mother!

Stop.

You insolent wench! Think keeping quiet will make this go away?

You leave me no other choice,

If you don't talk, we'll make your daughter talk instead.

Tie her down!

No! How can you do this to a little child!

Take me, take me instead!

Mother!

She's just a child, she doesn't know anything!

Please punish me, not her!

Go ahead, tell us what you saw and heard. Where did you get that marble?

I don't know, I don't know anything!

Still not talking, after seeing you mother go through all that pain?

Strike her until she begins to talk!

Mother!!!

Stop!

What are you waiting for? strike them until they confess!

Yes sir!

What do you think you're doing!

My lord,

How are you feeling?

Nothing a few days' rest won't cure.

Good,

I'm releaved to hear that.

I have to have a word with your mother, please go wait in the next room, Yeon.

Go ahead.

I spoke to the local goveror, your theft charges are dropped.

Why are you helping us?

We are most grateful, but we cannot accept your grace without knowing the reason.

I have my own reasons.

Then...

Stay here and take care of Cho Ok.

She has always been sick, ever since she was born,

I never had a good night's sleep.

This troublesome child opened her eyes and started breathing again the moment you came to our house.

But I just...

The way you made her open her eyes, you're much better than the doctors I've seen.

It'll comfort me to have you stay beside Cho Ok.

My lord...

It'll be the same, wherever you go.

Wandering around alone as a woman, things like this will happen to you again.

Staying here would be better, especially for your daughter Yeon.

What is Mrs. Gusan doing here?

She'll be staying with us for a while, taking care of Cho Ok.

Let's stay here until you become a full fledged fox, three months later...

I didn't want to get mixed up in this filthy human world,

But to you, yeon, a sheltered environment would be better than the wild.

Mother,

Are we going to be living here from now on?

I don't know,

Now we have a roof over us,

we don't have to starve anymore,

Then does that mean we're all set up for good?

What?

Father said,

a place to stay, and three meals a day - there's nothing more one can wish for.

Yeon, want to sing a song with mom?

How far along are you?

...All the way up to the valley...

You can fault me,

But, this is your fate!

Ma'am,

Ugh, not again!

So Lord Yoon asked you to be Cho Ok's caretaker?

Yes ma'am

She's our most precious. Please do all you can.

Yes ma'am,

It stinks, can't drink it.

Stink?

It stinks from all the way over there!

Wait outside.

What did you put in here, how come it tastes so horrible?

Medicine is supposed to be bitter. Drink it up.

You can leave us now.

Yes ma'am.

I was just taking a break, I'll go right back and start working.

Don't bother. You're not here as a maid.

You don't have to work.

No need.

Do you understand?

Yes my lord.

Don't erase it.

Superb, this could go straight onto a silk screen.

I mean your talent is impressive. Carry on.

Who do you think you're staring at? Pathetic as you are, you should still recognize your superiors!

I think I should teach her a lesson today, what do you think?

Great idea!

A slave's kid is also a slave!

Go work! Work!

But Lord Yoon told me not to...

What? What kind of lie is that?

Yeah right, liar!

Its not a lie, he really told me not to work.

LIke mom like kid, you thief.

Thief?

We're not thieves!

What do you think a thief is? Slacking off and wasting our food!

Then what do you want me to do?

Fill that with water.

All of them?

Yes, all of them!

To the brim!

It's okay,

Can't you talk?

But you can understand what I'm saying?

It's fine, if the young master sees us he'll get angry.

Ah? Ajuhssi (appellation for older men), ajuhssi!

Must have been cool to your skin!

You horrid thing, I told you to fetch the water on your own, what do you think you're doing?

I, I...

Chunwoo, stay back!

That wretch! He must be out of his mind!

No, it's not his fault,

It's all my doing,

Since you didn't follow my orders, I'll have to punish you.

What are you doing!

My lord!

My lord,

Please, that should be enough...

He's just a little boy,

My lord, please forgive him!

Get up.

Please, forgive me..

Please forgive him!

Get up!

I'm sorry, I'll never do anything like that again!

Do you understand? That girl is not your slave or maid,

If you ever touch her again, I won't let it go this easy!

Yes my lord!

I don't need the ointment anymore.

Right. The cut healed.

Mom, we're not going to live here forever, are we?

Why?

This place is scary..

Scarier than a tiger?

even than hunger?

It'll get better, try to bear it out just for a while.

Mrs. Gusan,

Take this..

What is this?

The lord sends this.

Huh?

Look, so soft! Like silk!

This inkstone smells amazing! Must be one of those real painters use! Today must be my birthday!

You bastard, I took pity on you because you were dumb, but now you think you can just do whatever you want?

A good beating can cure insolence!

If you don't mind your own business, you won't survive the next time I lay my hands on you!

What happened!?

Lift up your head,

Come on!

Oh dear...

Is this because of Yeon?

Don't try to help us next time,

Why would you get yourself into trouble like this?

Take care, okay?

My lady!

What is it?

Lord Yoon bought this for you,

Ugh. I would have preferred some accessories.

What would I use these for?

What do you mean, you can write a letter to young master Jung Gyu!

My love for you, is not a rug, thus I cannot roll it up and take it away...

and, and....

What are you staring at with those ugly eyes?

Forgive me lady.

My love for you, master Jung Gyu...

Didn't you say it was a rug?

Who asked you?

Forgive me my lady.

Ew, I can't stand it.

What is it?

What else,

Letter from lady Cho Ok.

Again?

My lady!

How did it go?

How come you didn't bring back anything?

What about his reply?

Um, about that...

Bawhi (name of the man servant) says, young master read your letter, and then...

he wore this mysterious smile, moving his head about,

And said he's going off to watch the fireflies.

What do you mean? Where's his response, and what's this about fireflies?

Hmm, maybe he means, he wants to go firefly watching... with you?

Really?

Then let's get ready!

Wait a minute, my lady,

It's still mid day.

We must wait.

Is it a dream,

Is it the wind.

The wings beating,

Cut it up, ask for news from my love

But it's all scattered in the wind

A wild flower, wavering in the wind

Crying all night, not making a sound.

Is my heart a flower, or is the flower my heart

So withered away

Blow away, the wind

blow away my sadness

Until you reach where my love is

Master, this isn't the best spot,

Shhh!

This is fine, you can leave now.

Ur, why, all of a sudden?

OH... then I'll make myself scarce...

As in the old saying (studying with the moonlight reflected on the snow field, and firefly lights), the fireflies are so bright!

Hmm, I'd like to take a closer look.

Take my hand.

We're strangers, man and woman,

How could I...

Do we still have to stick to such formalities even when helping someone out of the water?

You're right.

Did you come here to catch fireflies too?

What is it?

Shhhh!

Did he really say he's coming out to see the fireflies?

Yes, for sure!

Maybe he already went back...

Why are you hiding away like this?

I just... felt like I should.

I'll have to head back home.

My mom would be worrying about me.

Uh, this, take this,

Thank you!

I'm sorry,

Mom,

I did something wrong...

What is it?

I lost the bells at the stream...

What?

Sorry, I'm so clumsy...

Let's go together and look for it at the stream tomorrow.

Really?

Yes.

Ek, its hot! You little brat!

My lady,

Master Jung Gyu at Lord Park's is looking for you.

Really? Master Jung Gyu, looking for me?

I knew it.

It's all 'cause of that letter I dictated for you.

Why is it because of you? And, you're not coming along all the way, are you?

Huh?

Go mind your business. Go work in the kitchen.

Young master~

Cho Ok!

I was waiting for your response, anyway...

When you came by to see me when I was ill, I was too out of it...

You've come to check on me, right?

Um, I uh, not really...

What is that?

Oh this, it's...

Actually I came here to return this to its owner.

Huh?

Is there a girl who wears these bells here?

You know - fair skin, clear features...

Fair.. and clear?

Ah, there she is!

Then...

How do you know Yeon?

Oh, so her name is Yeon!

Cho Ok, see you later!

I was going to go down to the stream to look for this!

Good that I came in time!

Thank you so much!

It's a gift from mother, something I cherish...

What's all that?

Oh, actually...

Why did you cut off flowers that havent even fully bloomed yet?

Wasn't me, I saw them scattered in the yard, it was such a pitiful sight...

Don't feel that way,

Huh?

How did it go? What did young master say?

So when did he first fee that spark for you?

When are you seeing him again?

I'm going to kill that wench!!

My lord!

Please, sit.

That's not how you make ink with an inkstone.

Sit up straight,

Hold up the ink stone on a right angle,

LIke this,

Now you try.

Haha, like this, hold it up straight,

Good, that's right.

Kick them out NOW! You have to see it for yourself,

He was smiling at that horrid little thing, like it was ME sitting there!!

And he gave us the same present!

inkstone for a servant? Aren't you mad??

Kick them out now, NOW!

It's grown up business, I have my own ideas.

don't do anything rash.

There isn't any time to lose!!

He's totally possessed by her!

Fine then. If you can't, I'll do it!

Cho Ok, Cho Ok!

Think you can be a proper lady if you toil away like that?

My lady!

Painting for a lowly thing like you? Ridiculous!

My lady, please give it back!

What.. what are you...

You thief.

I'm not a thief.

Who do you think you're staring at!

How can you have such expensive paper, if you didn't steal it?

No that's not true, Lord Yoon gave it to me.

Who'd believe you?

You don't get it, do you.

I should call the authorities.

Oh no, that's no use, right.

You two temptresses'll get my father to spring you out again.

Then there's only one way, I'll have to punish you myself.

Unnyun? (name of the maid servant)

Yes m'lady?

Y...yes m'lady!

Let me go! Let me down!

Unnyun? throw her in.

What? in the well?

Where else? go on!

Let me go, please, please!

M'lady, that's too..

Do you want to die too? Now do it!

Help, help, help!!!!!!!

Mom, Mom!!

Mother, mom!!!

Go on, struggle as you will

I'll stay right here to watch you die.

Yeon!!!

Looking for your daughter?

A bit too late, aren't you?

Yeon!

Mom!

Pull her up! Now!

Here, Yeon!

Almost here!

Yeon!

Are you okay?

Still don't know what you've done wrong!!??

I've taught you all wrong,

You were always a weak child, I pampered you too much

And you became such a mean, arrogant brat!

I hate her,

I hate her mother too, always trying to feed me bitter stuff, poking places that ache,

I hated from the very moment I first saw them!

I hate it when you look at that girl as if you're looking at me,

I hate it all!

Kick them out,

I hate you doting on her!!

What? Why do you think I let them stay here in the first place!

Don't even try to say it was for me

I don't know what her mother did to open my eyes

but the very sight of her drives me mad!

You haven't had your share of beating yet!

Stop!

Let her go, why interfere in a rightful lesson I'm giving her?

I'm not saying she was right, scolding her's fine,

But beating her like this when she's not even all well!

My lord, you changed!

What do you mean.

A rootless lowly wretch is shaking up our family

Such a suspicious circumstance, but

I endured it, thinking you did it all for Cho Ok!

But look, you're killing her instead of making them take care of her!

Who is Cho Ok, she's your one and only daughter!

Last time you scolded down your son for Yeon,

Now Cho Ok! Who's next?

Is it me?

Why don't you all understand?

How can YOU be so blind about how I feel?

Kick them out, no matter how skilled that woman is,

I still don't want her! It's either them or me!

I can't wait anymore, Cho Ok's making it even harder,

Let's take off at dawn,

Huh?

Why, would you rather stay?

It's not like I like it here that much, but I don't hate it either,

There are some good people.

LIke that dumb Ajuhssi,

But there's lady Cho Ok and the young masters of the household,

They'll keep hassling you.

But there's Lord Yoon.

What?

Lord Yoon got them all!

You weren't that close to him before..

I don't like this place myself.

This place, the people here... those who did this to you.

Go to sleep,

Long way to go tomorrow.

Mrs. Gusan?

Climb on.

Where are we going?

Lord Yoon told us to bring you two.

We're here.

M'lord,
