When a stranger comes calling

in the middle of the night...

Somebody's at the door.

unassuming person.

I didn't think
I was coming out alive.

Just a stone's throw away

from the New Hampshire border,

Lebanon, Maine, is a tiny town
cloaked in lush pine forests

and packed with rambling streams
and wildlife.

Lebanon is more of a town

that you might drive through.

There's not much industry there.

It's really a country town,
if you will.

It's a bit of a remote town.

There may be some car accidents,

but for the most part,
it's a small, safe Maine town.

For the first time
in almost 18 years,

36-year-old mother of two
Deborah brown

knows what it's like
to feel safe

now that she's hundreds of miles
from her husband, Steven.

I met him
in Portsmouth, New Hampshire,

at Prescott park.

He was in the marine corps.

He seemed like
a nice, loving, fun guy.

Before we got married,
it was awesome,

but soon as we said, "I do,"
he said, "I now own you,

and you do as I say
and what I want."

Two days after we got married

was the first time
he ever laid a hand on me.

After 17 years, I just couldn't
take it anymore.

I just wanted out
of his abusive relationship.

With her two children in tow,

10-year-old Whitney
and 15-year-old Steven junior,

Deborah finds sanctuary
at the home of her brother Don.

Now, three months later,
things couldn't be better.

Deborah's found a great job
and a new romance

with 34-year-old
Chris brouillard.

Chris was totally opposite
of my husband.

I mean, he, you know,
held the car door open for you.

He wouldn't let you
pay for your own dinner.

I mean, he just treated you like
how you wanted to be treated,

like a queen.

Nothing.

It's just nice to have someone
to help around the house.

Don was Deborah's big brother

who wanted to take care of her
and her children

and protect her.

Although Deborah is moving on,

her estranged husband,
Steven, isn't.

He called again.

You know he's not gonna quit

My brother, Donnie --
we're seven years apart.

Donald was very protective of me
'cause I was the only girl.

and the only way to do that

He'd pick me up, being pregnant,

and throw me from one end
of the room to the other.

to get me to come back to him,

and, with the kids,
he would say,

Deborah files for divorce,

and the court grants her
full custody of her children

and child support.

Because of his history of abuse,

she's also granted an order
of protection against Steven.

I think I saw him in court

on the last part
of our custody thing.

It wasn't the same man
that I looked at

when I was married to him.

I was, like, angry.

I was hurt.

I was joyous.

I mean, I had all these
mixed emotions

because I did love the man.

He gave me two wonderful kids,

so I just had
all these mixed emotions.

Still, overall,
the imminent divorce

leaves Deborah feeling much more
optimistic about her future.

Living without
Steven around was awesome.

I quickly got on my feet
and got a job

through a cleaning service.

I got to keep my paychecks.

I was just more relaxed.

and I could see somebody

Later that evening,
Don's girlfriend, Linda,

joins the group
for a quiet night in.

We decided to watch a movie.

I believe it was "armageddon."

-It wasn't me.

Yeah.

Go ahead and get started.

I'm not cleaning up.

I think my brother's property
was like two or three acres.

It's a pretty quiet place
to live.

It's starting!
-Right. I'm coming.

I just sensed
something was not right.

Everything okay?
-Yeah.

I said,
"there's something out there,"

and Chris says, "it's just
a raccoon or something."

I don't know. I just
was very antsy that night.

I just couldn't sit still.

I just felt like
somebody was there

that wasn't
supposed to be there.

After the movie ends,

everyone heads to bed.

Somebody's at the door.

Don wood's house was in
a relatively remote area

of Lebanon,

and there were no
nearby neighbors.

Who's there?

I'm sure that he thought,

"I'm gonna go out
and see what's going on."

I'm so sorry
if I woke you.

My car --
it's stuck in the mud

at the end of the road,

and I can't believe
I'm even asking this,

but I did --
I tried to turn it on,

and the wheels
just kept turning and turning,

so, sorry.

that you could maybe
help me get it out?

Don wood was
more than happy to assist

this stranger in the night,
him being just a kind man.

If someone needed help,
he went out and helped.

Minutes later,
the distressed woman and Don

head down the road
towards route 202.

I pulled over
to look at my map,

and then, all of a sudden,
I was stuck.

Yeah, it gets pretty muddy
around here

when the snow melts.

I really

At that hour of the night,

there was not a lot
of traffic on the road.

There was just, you know,
their residence

and a lot of area
surrounding them.

It doesn't look
that deep,

you can't
just drive out?

No, I -- I tried.

I don't know
what's going on.

It's just after midnight,

and 36-year-old Deborah brown
and her boyfriend, Chris,

are fast asleep
in her brother's house...

...but not everyone
is safely tucked in bed.

I'm so sorry.

Don's helping me
with my car.

I'm stuck in the mud,
and he needs some help.

He asked me to come back
and get Chris.

Could you

She was a very
unassuming person.

No one would suspect
anything of her.

She looked like just a woman

that would live

There's a lady at the door
that says

uncle Don needs Chris' help
with her car.

So Chris finally gets up.

At this point, Linda's up,

and she goes,
"I'm really nervous."

And I said,
"why? What's wrong?"

She goes, "because your brother
has been gone for an hour,

and now she's just coming back
and asking for Chris."

So her and I
looked out the window --

you know, we peeked
the curtains open a little bit.

We watched Chris
walking down the driveway,

and then he just disappeared.

So sorry
I had to wake you, too.

That's okay.

Don and I
will get you fixed up.

Don!

Don, where are you?
That's weird.

He was here
just a couple minutes ago.

Well, maybe he went to
take a leak or something.

Unfortunately, Chris faced
the same fate as Don did.

I don't think either man
probably felt

that they were in harm's way
by going out to assist

this unassuming stranger
that came knocking on the door.

I don't know where they are.

I'm like, "wow."

I said,
"I have a really bad feeling."

At this point,
the knock came again.

Hi. I'm so sorry
to keep imposing.

I know it's late.

I thought she was very rude
for somebody who needed help,

but I didn't know her.

Where's Don and Chris?

Just down the road.

My car is stuck.

They said
they need Linda's s.U.V.

To pull it out of the mud.

You know what?

I'll go.

She was actually looking for
Don wood's girlfriend,

Linda malcomb,
to come out and assist them,

but by this time, Deborah brown
was getting a little suspicious,

and she told Linda malcomb,
"no, you stay here.

I will go
and see if I can help them."

Just let me
throw on some clothes,

and I'll meet you
down there.

So I went out,
backed out of the driveway,

and headed for 202.

And I get just past
the driveway,

and I looked to the right.

My god.

And that's when I saw
my ex-husband,

and I'm like,
"my god. This is bad."

Mhhhhhhhhhhh!

Deborah's
first instinct was to flee,

as would be anyone's
human nature at that point.

She had been terrorized by him
for so long,

and he had found her,

but it flashed through her mind
is that her daughter

and Don's girlfriend
were back at the house,

so her maternal instinct
took over,

and that's what she needed to do
was protect her daughter.

Deborah races back to the house.

Hey, hon.

Can you, - can we talk
for a second?

Steven brown decided
he wanted to come to Maine

to confront Deborah,
and he was stalking her

and sort of figuring out
her movements

in the days
prior to encountering her.

He followed Deborah
back to Donald wood's home,

and Steven brown
chased the car down,

but before she can
get out of the car

or get into the house
or anything like that,

Steven brown
is right there with a gun.

Get out of the truck now!
-No!

We got into an altercation
in the driveway.

No!

So I look at the power lock,
so, you know, I'm locked in.

Damn it, Deb.

You get out of
the truck now!

Deborah brown starts
honking her horn as she does,

in hopes of
attracting the attention

of her daughter, Whitney,

and Linda malcomb,
who's in the house.

My god.

It's my dad!

Whitney! Whitney!
Call 911! He's here!

Are you gonna make a scene
in front of our kid?

Your dad's here!
He's got a gun!

There were no nearby neighbors.
-Call 911!

So even if someone
was screaming,

chances are
they may not have been heard.

So that made things for Steven
that much easier.

Get the phone!

Whitney looks out the window
and sees not only her mother

but recognizes her father
as being there with a firearm,

and obviously there's
a protection-from-abuse order,

and she knows
he shouldn't be there.

Hurry!
He's gonna kill her!

Linda malcomb called 911

to get law enforcement involved.

Meanwhile, Deborah is
locked in a battle of wills

with her ex-husband.

Hey, you know what?
-No!

You're gonna open it,
or I'm gonna break it open!

No.
-Stop.

Please, stop!
-No!

Fine.
Here you go.

Steven brown takes
the butt of the gun

and breaks the car window,

which then gives him
access to her,

and he was a very violent,
dangerous man.

No, no.
Please leave me alone!

Hon. It's nice
to see you, too.

What do you say we go
for a little drive, okay?

Steve's mood was, like,
different than past events.

He wasn't the same Steve I knew.

You couldn't tell
what he was thinking.

Let's go!

Steve.
-Come on!

He still has his gun.

He said, "now you're gonna
drive to the end of the road."

Steven, please.

Drive the car.

From that point on,

I didn't know if I was gonna
make it out of there.

It's the middle
of the night in rural Maine,

and Deborah brown's
estranged husband

has come to take her back.

Steven threatened her
with a weapon

and broke the window
of the vehicle,

got into the vehicle,

and forced her to drive away
from that residence.

Several miles down the road,

a now-familiar face
is waiting for them.

He ultimately made her stop
and meet up with this woman

who had knocked on the door
at Don's residence

and said that she had trouble --
some car trouble --

and needed assistance outside.

We now know her to be
Patricia teeter.

Just pull up
next to her. Come on.

She didn't really have
a lot of social relationships,

it didn't seem like,
from what we understand.

Steven let Patricia believe that
they were in a relationship,

so she automatically assumed
he was her boyfriend,

whereas I don't think Steven
looked at her in the same way.

She was more of a means
to an end to assist him

with what his plan was
for his ex-wife.

Hey!
Let's go!

Come on.
Get out of the car.

We don't got all night!

Get in the back seat.

At some point...

...throughout
the course of that night,

they switched vehicles,

and obviously
Steven had this planned out.

Now keep your head down

They made me get in
the back seat

and told me if I didn't behave,

then they were gonna zip-tie
my arms and my legs

and duct-tape my mouth.

Back at the house,
Deborah's daughter, Whitney,

and Don's girlfriend, Linda,

are desperate
for police to arrive.

There's just -- please,
please just hurry, okay?

No, I...
Look, I don't...

No, I don't know
where he is.

He -- he took Deb,
and he drove off.

Yeah, my boyfriend --

he -- he's been gone
for over an hour.

I -- I have no --

I have no idea where he is.

To -- are you
sending someone now?

Okay.

Being that it was
in such a remote area,

there wasn't a local
police department right nearby.

As the kidnappers
head south to New York state,

Steven brown keeps
close watch on his wife.

There was obviously
three occupants in the car --

Steven, Patricia, and Deborah.

But they would have her hide or
lay down so she wasn't observed

while they were going through
toll booths,

so it would just appear that
there was always two occupants

so that she was never spotted.

After driving
for several hours,

they make another stop.

I'll be quick.

You better be.

I really thought
I was coming back in a body bag,

so I had a lot of thoughts.

He knew I had a fear of water.

If I couldn't see bottom,

I didn't really care
to go swimming in it,

so he knew that
I had a fear of water,

so I suspected that that's what
he was gonna do was drown me.

Who's gonna
take care of my kids?

How is my family gonna
take me not being here?

Steven,
what did you do to them?

Don and Chris --
where are they?

Are they okay?

They're fine.

Someone will find them
real soon.

Steven was refusing
to tell her where they were,

so she had no idea
what had happened to them.

You even think about
going for that door...

I had to go to the bathroom,

but they only wanted me
to go on the side of the road.

So I could go in the woods.
I wouldn't do it.

The women's room
was closed.

Around 3:00 A.M.,
Maine state police

finally arrive
at Don wood's house.

I -- I don't know
who she was

before she came to the house
asking for help.

It was my dad.

I saw him.

He took my mom.

You have to help her.
Please?

Yeah,
and Don and Chris.

They're out there
somewhere.

So this woman --

you said she came
to the house by herself.

Yeah. She said her car
was stuck in the mud

at the end of the road.

And you saw your dad?

Later.

for a sec.

Upon the Maine police's arrival,

they're assuming
they're just dealing with

a kidnapping at this point.

It's gonna be okay,

But only minutes
into their investigation,

it's suddenly clear that they're
dealing with something far worse

than the abduction
of a spouse.

Keenan's dog
got the hit.

Don wood and Chris brouillard
had been murdered.

Steven brown first hit
Don wood over the head,

and then he stabbed him

and dragged him across the road

and propped his body up
against a tree.

There's another one
over there.

Chris brouillard was also hit
on the head a couple of times,

but he was stabbed
repeatedly.

His throat was cut,

and he died
of blunt-force trauma,

as well as the stabbing.

We got to find
Deborah brown

before she ends up
like this.

Steven knew that these
two gentlemen stood in his way

to getting to Deborah,
and the only way to get to her

was to eliminate
those obstacles.

If he went to that extreme
in order to get her

away from that residence,

it obviously gives you pause to
realize that whomever did this

is not only capable
of the double homicide,

but possibly
capable of a third.

Get in the back.

Ripped away from her family

and taken hostage

by her murderous
estranged husband, Steven,

Deborah brown has no idea
what will happen next.

The sun will be up soon.

We can lay low here
until tonight.

The three of them travel through
a good part of the night,

and then Steven decides
he wants to get a hotel room.

Get US a couple rooms
near each other.

So she just does whatever

whether it's in state
or out of state,

and that's how, ultimately,

we got that bolo
in New York state.

Meanwhile, in a motel

on the outskirts
of Albany, New York,

Steven brown's
reign of terror continues.

from the gas station
up the road.

she was a pawn

in this horrific nightmare
that Steven brown had created.

I think she was
in love with Steven,

and he utilized that
to control her to an extent.

He went in both rooms
and ripped out the phones.

He did take the phones
or whatever else I could use to,

you know, call for help.

He forced me
to have sex with him.

He was so rough.

It made me feel dirty.

After working
all night on the case,

Maine detectives finally
hit on something of interest.

Yeah, whoa, whoa,

What kind of car
was she driving?

By this time,
they had figured out

that Patricia teeter
was involved.

They had her car,
had her license plate.

Back at the motel,
Patricia teeter sits idle,

patiently waiting
to be told her next move.

Patricia was secluded
in the one room by herself.

She had ample opportunity,

had she chosen to make
a phone call to get help.

But Patricia doesn't
call the police.

Hey, Gina.
It's Patty.

Um, I don't think I'm gonna
make it in tomorrow.

Patricia made a phone call
to a friend.

Patty, what's going on?

It's all over the news.

There are two men dead
in Maine,

and police are looking
for Steven

and probably you, too.

Dead?

Where the hell are you?

Near Albany, I think.

Um, hey, listen.
I got to go.

I -- I'll talk to you later.

Ultimately, it was Patricia's
conversation with her friend

that prompted that friend
to call the police,

and that gave US the tip
that she was in our area.

At this point in time,
the information was disseminated

to our officers,
including myself,

and we went to check
our local hotels in the area

to see if we could come up
with the vehicle

matching that description
in the bolo.

But without confirmation

of exactly where
the fugitives are hiding,

law enforcement is held at bay
well into the following night.

And inside the motel room,

Deborah is starting
to lose hope.

Hey, it's,
almost dinnertime.

Want me to ask Patty
to get US something to eat?

I would not eat any food
they brought me

'cause I did not know
if they were poisoning me.

They tried to get me to
take medicine for my headache.

I just wouldn't do
any of that.

Good god.

I was angry that he took me
away from our kids,

who needed their mom,

and he promised me
the whole time we were there

Outside, in the parking lot,

officer Elaine rudzinski
is hard at work.

We knew that Patricia
had mentioned Albany

in her phone conversation
with her friend,

so, in my mind, that meant

that it might be a hotel
at the lower end of our town

where you could see
the Albany skyline,

so that's where I went
to check first.

I arrived approximately
at about 1:40 A.M.,

and I was alone at that point.

I noticed a vehicle that did
fit the year and the make

of the vehicle
that was described in the bolo

with Steven brown.

I just knew in my gut right away
it was that car,

and I couldn't believe that
they were in east greenbush.

This is unit 8.

Get me the state police.

I got an update
on a 1057.

I called for backup.

I went in to talk
to the night clerk

to see who had rented
those rooms.

Get US a couple rooms
near each other.

Sure.
Once we identified

that Patricia teeter had rented
both the motel rooms,

we felt pretty confident that
Steven brown and Deborah brown

would probably be
in the adjacent room,

and we knew we had to act fast.

It's been more than 24 hours

since 36-year-old Deborah brown
was taken hostage

by her estranged husband,
Steven.

With each passing minute,

he appears closer
to his breaking point.

I gave you everything.

There is never enough.

Do you have any idea
what you've done to me,

how much I've suffered
because of you?

He said, "how can you
just stop loving me?"

I remember
that specific question.

I said, "this was not love.

You don't treat somebody
that way when you love them."

that made the entry
simultaneously into each room.

And all I heard was,
"put your hands over your head

and don't move."

Police arrest
Steven brown and Patricia teeter

and take them into custody.

He can't hurt you
anymore.

When Deborah was
brought out of the room,

she looked relieved,
but she also looked like a woman

that had been through
a horrendous ordeal.

We knew she was safe,
but I think it was too soon

for her to realize
that she was truly safe.

The Maine state police
are on their way.

They're gonna meet you
at the station.

All I could really do was
assure her that she was safe now

and that it was
gonna be okay.

But Deborah's
nightmare isn't over yet.

How you holding up?

My brother and Chris --
are they okay?

I'm sorry.

We found them
in the woods,

and by the time
we got to them...

No, they didn't make it.

They told me about
my brother and Chris,

and I still didn't believe them.

He said,
"yeah, they're really gone."

Two caring individuals --

I mean,
they lost all their chances

to be with their family
and friends, you know,

and have families of their own.

That afternoon,

Deborah flies back
to Lebanon, Maine,

and reunites with her children.

I think the three of US
just held each other and cried.

I said,
"I'm never leaving you again.

I will not leave your sight."

We thought you were dead.

I'm okay, okay?

Steven brown and Patricia teeter

are extradited
from New York back to Maine

where detective Scott harakles
interviews each of them.

Steven brown admitted to
causing the death

of Donald and Christopher.

But he repeatedly denied
it was premeditated...

...and even went so far as to
suggest on a couple of occasions

that he was acting
in self-defense.

He had the personality where,

"if you're not mine,
you're no one's,

and if you don't do
what I say you're gonna do,

then I'm going to stop you."

When Deborah
ultimately left him,

he couldn't handle that.

That was something
against his authority

that he thought
he held over her,

and I think that, ultimately,
that was his demise

because I don't think
he realized what a survivor

Deborah was gonna be.

Patricia teeter
is less forthcoming.

She does her best
to plead her innocence.

You're facing felony
murder charges, Patricia.

I had no idea what Steven
was really planning.

He told me
that he just needed to

get her away
from her brother

so he could talk with her.

so he could get
some closure.

Is Steven okay?

Initially, I feel maybe Patricia

was a little naive
to what his plan was,

but after they got to the house

and she observed him
murder two people,

I think,
at that point in time,

she knew exactly
what Steven was capable of

and exactly
what his intentions were.

When she finally
recognizes the strength

of the case against her,
Patricia teeter pleads guilty

to two counts of felony murder,
plus one count of kidnapping.

In August of 2000,

she is sentenced
to 29 years in prison.

On November 4, 1999,
Steven brown pleads guilty

to two counts
of intentional murder,

plus assorted
federal kidnapping charges,

and is sentenced
to life in prison.

In 2012,
he hangs himself in his cell.

I was angry.

I'm not gonna lie.
I was angry at him.

I felt he took
the coward way out.

He didn't want to pay
for his crimes, you know?

It wasn't worth
being angry anymore,

and I'm like, "you know what?

I forgive you for whatever
you've done to me

and to my brother and to Chris,
my family.

I forgive you."

It was like somebody
took a weight off my shoulder,

and for the first time in years,
I could breathe.

Donald wood and Chris brouillard

continue to be missed
by those who loved them.

I remember their smiles.

Chris -- we'd have
little bonfires, you know,

have a beer, talk about
the good old days growing up,

when we were kids.

My brother Donnie --
he was more like a dad to me

than a brother, so I really --

and if I need somebody
to talk to,

he's just not there.

Deborah brown
finds solace in her children

and new purpose in her life.

The now remarried survivor

works with federal agencies
and women's groups,

speaking about
domestic violence.

It's been a journey,

but I figure
I survived for a reason.

I tell myself that every day --
"I survived for a reason."

If it's just to help one person,
you know --

just one other person
who's gone through

what I've gone through --

then I've done what I was
supposed to do for surviving.
