Twisted Fate of Love

Episode 8

Xi,

what are you drawing?

I’m studying the floor plan of Marquis Dingyuan’s Mansion.

You know that

Dongyue determines to kill Marquis Dingyuan.

She won’t give up this chance.

I hear that His Majesty is going to be there.

And the mansion is guarded by imperial guards.

It’s almost as well-guarded as the imperial palace.

I don’t think Dongyue will court death like that.

Like what you just said, almost,

it’s not the imperial palace after all.

I fear that she may try

to break into the mansion.

You seem to be worried about her.

She lost her position in the Court History Bureau,

that’s more or less my fault.

But by trying to kill Lu Yuantong,

she’s being naive.

Rest assured, Xi,

I have an idea to stop her

from getting close to Marquis Dingyuan’s Mansion.

I hope you can really manage to do it.

Your martial arts are better than hers,

knock her out if necessary.

I got it.

I’ll go find a helper.

Virtuous Industrious Decent and Quiet Daole.

Virtuous Industrious Decent and Quiet Minister Feng needs your help.

But the Director of the Court History Bureau

has invited me to the banquet at Marquis Dingyuan’s Mansion.

Don’t you admire Minister Feng?

Helping Minister Feng

and going to the banquet,

which is more important?

Minister Feng is more important of course.

What’s the matter?

Don’t ask so much, just come with me.

OK.

Or we’ll be too late.

Lu’s Mansion

Lu’s Mansion Remember.

Lu’s Mansion Tonight is very important.

Lu’s Mansion Make sure nothing bad will happen.

Yes, don’t worry, General.

Your Grace.

Are the guards all in place?

Your Grace,

to make sure

nothing bad happens tonight,

I even prepared firearm.

His Majesty is going to be here,

don’t use firearm unless it’s really necessary.

Don’t worry, Your Grace.

Should someone come to make trouble,

I would not let him get away.

I always trust you.

Your turn.

-Come on. -You want to mess with me?

Hurry.

Do you call or not?

Of course not.

How about this?

Still no?

You…

Wait a minute, I’ll take a look.

Did you just

steal two cards?

Are you cheating?

I’m not!

Can’t I have another look?

I saw you reaching to those two cards.

I didn’t notice.

I’ll change my cards.

What’s wrong with you?

There are rules you know.

Let me see

if you cheated or not.

Why should I show my cards to you?

Look, you dare not show me your cards.

-You cheated! -Come on.

That’s enough.

Have a cup of tea.

It’s just a card game, not worth fighting.

All right, I’ll show you!

Just look! Look!

Look all you want!

Two.

Three.

Four.

Five. Six.

Seven. Eight.

Forget it.

Let’s start all over.

OK, let’s start all over.

Daole.

Did Feng Xi send you here

to prevent me from going somewhere?

How do you know?

Daole!

It’s just a card game, not worth fighting.

All right, I’ll show you!

Just look! Look!

Look all you want!

Five. Six.

Seven. Eight.

Invitation

Lu’s Mansion

We are in a flourishing era,

which naturally attracts birds.

Brilliant!

That’s amazing!

I heard about this kind of trick,

but I’ve never seen it.

Today is my first time.

That’s just a little trick,

You, Your Majesty,

are better at this.

What do you mean?

Your Majesty,

although Minister Feng’s trick looks simple,

it has a hidden meaning in it.

It means that

under Your Majesty’s leadership,

even birds are attracted,

let alone talents all over the world.

Good!

I like this trick!

You’ll be rewarded!

Thank you, Your Majesty.

Cheers.

Judging by your looks,

you failed your mission?

She’s too crafty.

If Dongyue gets caught, we can find her a scapegoat.

I’ll be outside.

Wait outside then.

Come on,

I’ll drink up first.

-To Your Majesty! -To Your Majesty!

I’m drunk.

Your Grace.

Come on, let me.

You may go back to the banquet.

Yes.

I’m so hammered.

Did anything abnormal happen today?

Your Grace, a maid

of our mansion is missing.

I’ve strengthened the security.

Remember, His Majesty is in the mansion,

I don’t want anything to happen.

Yes.

You reminded me though,

prepare a sedan at the west corner gate.

Your Grace,

where do you want to go?

Maybe tonight is a god-sent chance

for me to get out of the capital.

Go.

Yes.

How dare you perform assassination here?

You are truly bold!

Go get her!

After her!

Quick!

Your Majesty!

Something happened, Your Majesty!

Somebody tried to assassinate His Grace!

What?

Quick! Guard His Majesty!

Yes!

Come on! This way!

This way! Here!

Quick!

This mansion is perfectly guarded.

Come with me if you don’t want to die.

Just stay here.

I’ll keep you safe.

Why are you saving me?

I don’t know why

but I really don’t want you to die.

Remember,

you’ve always been in here

and you have no idea about what happened outside.

Do as I say and you’ll be safe.

Anyway, it’s better than dying meaninglessly.

Do you have any idea?

Take off your maid’s uniform first.

What are you doing?

In this room,

of course I’m doing anything I want.

What do you mean anything you want?

Go, go to bed and take off your clothes.

No way!

We can’t do this even we are pretending!

What do you want? Let go!

I’m saving your life!

This is no joke!

What are you doing?

Your wound…

Why is the firearm wound in your chest

not healing itself?

not healing itself?

None of your business!

Here it is!

They are here!

What do you want?

Don’t move. They are here.

It looks like my reputation

is going to be ruined.

Let go of me!

Mr. Minister is really something.

This is Marquis Dingyuan’s Mansion!

Marquis Dingyuan and I are brothers.

At my brother’s place,

I can do anything I want.

You are just a mere vice-general.

Be smart and go away!

It’s pretty weird though,

every time I search for an assassin,

you are in bed

with a woman.

Is it because you are really into it

or because this woman

is really beautiful?

How dare you offend my woman!

An assassin disguising as a maid tried to assassinate His Grace,

everybody saw that.

The female members in the mansion

and all guests today are on a list.

I wonder if this woman in your bed

is also on the list.

Then you should go check your list.

His Majesty has got the news

and the mansion is surrounded by imperial guards.

If you are trying to drive me away

and then set this woman free,

I suggest you save it.

We are both not dressed,

how can we meet His Majesty like this?

Get out!

I need to change.

Let’s go!

Zang Fei!

You are responsible for

His Majesty’s safety today!

Now an assassin has come in and disturbed His Majesty.

Do you realize your guilt?

Your Majesty.

Your Excellency.

I can pay for my guilt,

but the priority now is to find the assassin.

The assassin tried to attack Marquis Dingyuan,

not only did she fail, she got hurt during that.

And I shot her with

a firearm.

She has a knife wound and a firearm wound with her.

As long as she shows up,

the truth will be revealed.

I have warned you last time,

but you didn’t listen to me.

You just don’t learn.

You understand now?

With your own strength,

you can’t kill Lu Yuantong.

Stop trying to do silly things.

What should I do then?

By me,

I’m not his match

on the imperial court.

You have some helping hands

on the imperial court, you know.

I finished.

You can turn over.

Come on.

Tonight

is going to be a long night.

Your Majesty,

I’m sorry for being

inappropriate in front of Your Majesty.

There’s no wound on her arm.

Aren’t you…?

Dongyue from the Court History Bureau!

The legendary half an immortal.

In front of His Majesty,

tell everyone if you are a man or a woman.

Your Majesty,

I’m a woman.

Feng Xi,

you recommended her to me.

Don’t tell me

you know nothing about this.

Your Majesty,

I really didn’t know she’s a woman when she entered

the Court History Bureau.

You…

I came to realize it when I was

on Marquis An’s case.

But I had reported

about her being half an immortal

to the imperial court,

I was afraid of being punished,

so I chose to hide it.

You thought I’d never find out?

She lied to His Majesty,

and you are also part of it.

Your Majesty,

I realized my guilt.

Dongyue disguised herself

and deceived Your Majesty,

that’s my fault.

Please punish me.

Mr. Minister has always been capable,

how come

he made such a mistake for a woman?

You think I’ll spare you

for your sister, the Noble Consort?

I admit my guilt.

But Dongyue is really loyal,

please give her another chance

for her to serve the country.

Father,

Dongyue is a real talent,

she can assume an important position.

I know very clearly

about her morality.

Please spare her, Father.

She can’t get away with it so easily.

It’s me who helped her

get into the Court History Bureau.

For the punishment,

I’d like

to share it

with Dongyue.

You…

Your Majesty,

we can talk about that later.

The priority now

is to find the assassin.

That’s right.

The Marquis Dingyuan’s Mansion is well-guarded by soldiers,

it’d be a joke if the assassin

got away so easily.

You may all rise.

-Thank you, Your Majesty. -Thank you, Father.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

Your Majesty,

there’s a firearm wound in the assassin’s chest,

I did it to her myself.

To prove that Dongyue is not the assassin,

why don’t we just check?

How dare you!

Miss Dongyue is half an immortal,

everybody knows that.

How could she be the assassin?

Stop framing others

to cover your guilt up.

Your Majesty, the assassin is caught.

Bring her up.

Yes.

It’s you?

Is she a scapegoat you found?

Your Majesty,

before Vice-general Zang started to search the mansion,

she had already got out of the mansion.

I was passing by

and saw her acting weird.

I fought her

and then caught her.

You mean she’s the assassin?

Do you have proof?

Can you prove that she’s not?

Vice-general Zang,

is she the real assassin?

Your Majesty,

her wound

does look like the one I caused.

Why did you try to assassinate Marquis Dingyuan?

Who sent you?

Your Majesty,

Marquis Dingyuan is my sworn enemy,

but he’s always closely guarded,

I couldn’t find the chance to act.

I finally got the chance today,

but I still failed.

I’ll accept

any punishment.

How dare you!

On the verge of death,

and you are still lying!

Sir,

he’s really my sworn enemy.

Nobody is behind

this assassination.

Nobody’s behind it?

Why do you keep peeking at the Deputy Prime Minister?

Minister Feng, what are you implying?

You can’t frame me up like that!

Don’t be afraid, Your Excellency.

Young lady,

do you know

that after trying to assassinate a high-ranking official,

not only you will be executed,

your whole family will die with you.

But you admitted without any hesitation,

you must be alone.

Your Excellency,

you didn’t tell me that!

Now that I admitted my guilt,

you’ll spare my little brother, won’t you?

You… You’re…

Stop talking nonsense!

I…

I don’t know you at all!

You threatened me with my little brother, Xiaosi’s life

to frame Miss Dongyue up,

and today you ordered me

to come and assassinate His Grace.

Your Excellency,

my life does not matter,

but please honor your promise

and save Xiaosi, my little brother.

What…? What…?

What Xiaosi?

What are you talking about?

Your Majesty,

this woman is suspicious.

Please don’t

believe anything she said, Your Majesty.

That’s enough!

Guards!

Send this woman

into the prison.

She’ll be interrogated later.

-Yes! -Yes!

Bring her down.

Your Excellency,

if anything happens to my brother,

I’ll hunt you down as a ghost!

You…

Bring her down!

Fang Yuan.

Your Majesty.

You are suspected of assassinating Marquis Dingyuan,

you are grounded in your mansion from today on.

And you are not allowed to leave your mansion

before the end of this case.

I…

Your Majesty!

I’m really innocent!

Your Majesty, please!

Your Majesty!

Freedom and Harmony

It was me who tried to assassinate Lu Yuantong,

why did Mingzhu say it’s her?

She’s helping me now,

but why did she try to harm me?

I arranged it of course.

Which case was arranged by you?

Helping me or harming me?

You don’t believe me anyway.

Where is Lu Yuantong now?

Now?

I’m afraid he’s at Zhuming Post now,

not far from his fief.

My plotting is all in vain.

Do you know how much effort I exerted

to retain him in the capital?

But you

had to assassinate him

to give him an excuse to leave.

It’s all your fault!

If it weren’t for you,

I would have stabbed him to death at Zhuming Post,

which could have saved us so much energy.

In general,

it’s you who helped him!

Stop!

Where are you going?

To save Mingzhu.

Assassinating a high-ranking official is a capital crime.

I can’t let her die for me.

I told Daole to find a scapegoat,

I didn’t expect it to be her.

For Mingzhu’s matter,

you’ll figure out some idea, right?

I’m still on it,

but nothing yet.

In my last life,

according to the Capital Journal,

after the big banquet,

Lu Yuantong got back to his fief

and immediately began to plot a treason.

And that was followed with the Dingyuan Rebellion.

Does it mean I still

can’t change anything in this life?

Zhaoyang Hall

I had no choice

but to disguise as a man.

I wanted to serve the country

but couldn’t find a way.

That’s why I deceived you, Your Majesty.

Your Majesty,

our Yin State has never had a female official,

although Dongyue is half an immortal,

if she had come as a girl,

it would have been almost impossible for her to get a position on the court.

Since she got into the Court History Bureau,

she was diligent,

Your Majesty, please spare her

for disguising herself as a man.

Now that Lu Yuantong has left the capital,

killing him is impossible.

I may as well win His Majesty’s trust

and then figure out another idea.

I knew about my guilt,

and that gave me many sleepless nights.

I’ve been thinking about

how to explain it to Your Majesty.

His Highness the Third Prince is here.

Greetings, Father.

Greetings, Your Grace.

You may rise.

Thank you, Father.

What’s the matter?

I hear that

Lu Yuantong has left the capital that very night.

The Ministry of War

dare not report that.

Lu Yuantong is really outrageous.

He left without telling me.

Who does he think he is?

Does he think the capital is his fief?

Before he left, Lu Yuantong said

that the assassination last night

indicated that someone on the court was trying to eliminate him.

Plus the tense situation on the border,

although the mansion Your Majesty granted him was great,

he still valued his life more.

He said he would come back to the capital

one day to explain it to Your Majesty.

The assassination became his best excuse.

Father,

in my opinion,

if the Deputy Prime Minister is behind the assassination

still needs some investigation,

but what we can expect is

that Marquis Dingyuan faction and Deputy Prime Minister faction

are going to fight each other more and more fiercely.

Go on.

I suggest that Your Majesty

order to form a supervisory department

to review the proposals

and rectify the officials.

More importantly,

it can balance the two factions.

I can use my Yufeng Pavilion

to help Father gather talents.

My son,

you’ve grown up.

You are trying to share my worries now.

I have another request.

I hope Miss Dongyue

can come to help me.

What His Highness said makes sense.

With its neutral position, Yufeng Pavilion

is a perfect place for Dongyue to redeem herself by good service.

But…

Dongyue was originally coming back to the Ministry of Rites,

why did His Majesty order her

to work for the Third Prince?

Who on earth is this Dongyue?

Is she worth what you are doing?

Don’t tell me you fell for her.

You are worrying too much.

You have been with His Majesty the whole day,

you must be tired.

Feng Xi.

Are you mad at me?

I know you are worried about me.

Don’t be mad.

This represents my apology.

A lone wild goose is missing

on double seven day. This is beautiful.

on double seven day. You are really good.

July 7 is Qixi Festival,

it has your name in it.

I hope

that you won’t lose your direction

for some unimportant person.

A lone wild goose is missing on double seven day.

Feng’s Mansion

After what happened that night,

the Deputy Prime Minister has become my enemy.

We can’t treat this matter lightly.

By the way,

how is Mingzhu now?

I told you to find a condemned prisoner,

why did you bring Mingzhu there?

Mingzhu said thank you to you.

She doesn’t want you to save her this time.

What did she thank me for?

She said she should thank you

for giving her a chance

to revenge her past little brother,

and also

to give the life she owed Dongyue

back to her.

Say it!

Who sent you

to frame the Deputy Prime Minister up?

He dares to do that,

but why doesn’t he dare to admit?

It seems that you don’t know

what I, Yan Lu, am capable of.

OK.

Acting tough!

Acting tough!

Acting tough!

Acting tough!

Stop it!

Take her down from there.
