The Silent Criminal

Episode 1

Mansion of Prince Rui

Have you ever

heard about

the Dayintuya?

It is

the most divine of all artifacts.

Its power is unmatched

and it possesses limitless capacities.

Legend says

it is also the key

Centurion, Shou Chun

to opening

a large treasury containing divine artifacts.

Whoever that owns it

will be able to conquer the world.

Centurion, Feng Yang

The esteemed Centurions from the past

couldn't have possibly

skipped an opportunity to lay hands on such treasure.

Intruders have trespassed General Pei Zhang's residence...

Jinyiwei Guards, we require your assistance!

Jinyiwei Guard, Upper Rank Long Yao

The Jinyiwei Guards?

We're the imperial secret police...

Yet we have to clean up the mess for these so called royalty.

Jinyiwei Guard, Lower Rank Li Yu

Since we're already here, we might as well do a good job.

Dayintuya?

Dayintuya

Where are the intruders?

All executed.

Have they laid hands on anything inside?

General Pei Zhang.

We are the Jinyiwei Guards.

Our task is to protect important officials.

We are to

mind our own business.

General Pei Zhang

Father...

Son of Pei Zhang, Wang Xiao

What is this?

I've never heard you mention anything about it.

So many have died.

What is this thing called Dayintuya?

Within the box lies the best weapon in the world.

The Dayintuya.

Dayintuya

The previous dynasty allocated 800,000 elite soldiers

to build 94 treasure ships

and 300 siege crossbows.

All to conquer the Japanese kingdom.

They created this firearm

for their Emperor.

However, things didn't go as planned.

Everything was ruined by a storm.

This divine artifact...

was rendered useless in the end.

These intruders risked their lives

just to steal this.

The Dayintuya originally belonged to the royal family.

I don't know how it

fell into Pei Zhang's hands.

Over a decade ago,

I saved the emperor

and earned his trust.

So the late emperor entrusted me with this artifact.

No one must know of this.

Father...

Where is it?

Only Pei Zhang knows

the truth as to how the Dayintuya got lost.

He must be worried that we might expose him.

That means

we have indirectly

caught hold of something on him.

Li Yu,

this something...

You cannot,

and should not catch.

Where's my notebook?

I think I left it on the roof.

I'll be right back.

The Dayintuya was stolen.

If anyone finds out...

You and I will rot in prison for the rest of our lives.

That is why I have not said a word

for all these years.

Father...

The two Jinyiwei Guards earlier...

It's a huge crime

to kill a Jinyiwei Guard.

I hope they didn't open this box.

Seventh day.

Dawn.

Jinyiwei Guard Li Yu

has executed two intruders

in General Pei Zhang's residence.

They were here for the Dayintuya.

The Dayintuya

has been missing.

It is a death sentence to kill a Jinyiwei Guard.

I am a military man.

I know nothing of negotiations.

Speak your mind.

A thousand taels.

Just that?

For this month.

General Pei Zhang.

I'm not one

for blackmail.

I'll treat this money

as my travel allowance.

If you ever require my services,

I will be around.

I will definitely do my best.

An honorable Jinyiwei Guard

falling under my service?

This is truly overwhelming.

This money is nothing.

I'd like to treat you better.

Let us meet

in the hunting grounds tomorrow.

Thank you, General.

Constable of the Capital Shi Jing Yao

Strange.

Court Magistrate Liu Zhifu

What's strange?

This is the hunting grounds.

Jinyiwei Guard, Chief Official Ge

It's normal for these accidents to happen.

Look.

Over a hundred people came to hunt yesterday.

There's no fresh evidence.

What's there to investigate?

The one who died...

is a Jinyiwei Guard.

We will definitely

do our best for Official Ge's case.

We will catch the murderer.

Such a broad arrowhead.

These are usually used to hunt deer or bears.

For it to pierce through a human being

in such a dense forest...

It definitely wasn't a stray arrow.

You.

Come here.

Yes.

Give me a hand.

Come.

Lift it.

Yes.

Move towards me.

Hold it.

Move it towards me.

Move.

Alright.

Move.

Stop.

Lay it down.

Magistrate Liu.

Li Yu was a Jinyiwei Guard.

We cannot

involve ourselves with this case.

But you, you definitely have to make an effort.

Rest assured, Official Ge.

Shi Jing Yao is our

most capable constable.

There are no cases that he cannot handle.

Look at him now.

I am sure

that he already has a conclusion in his mind.

Right?

That's right.

According to the evidence in the crime scene

and my series of meticulous speculations,

Jinyiwei Guard Li Yu

is undoubtedly

dead.

There you go.

What?

Five days.

It's either the murderer's head

or your head.

I will take one with me.

Official Ge.

Are you threatening me?

Four days.

Even though I'm just a low-rank

constable

but I will never submit myself

to a threat.

Three days.

I will only speak based on evidence.

Two days.

Y-You!

One.

Two days.

I only need two days.

I will arrest the murderer.

Did they carry anything unusual with them?

Sir,

The intruders

did not possess any travel pass,

money nor documents with them.

We are unable to identify them.

This flower is from the borders.

Li Yu.

Make a record.

Li Yu is absent today.

Hey.

Wait for me.

What's up with you?

Say something.

What are you looking for?

Why are you...

Jing Yao, Jing Yao!

Just beat me up.

Wait, give me a second.

It...

It's like this.

Your father...

entrusted you to me.

I cannot let him down.

Also...

Your father and I

were great friends.

Right?

We were blood brothers.

So like I said...

Jing Yao,

I suppose

you don't have much

to go on with this case

If two days pass

and you still have nothing,

you're totally dead.

So for now,

you should run,

and I...

I'll just fake a wound.

I'll just tell them

that you injured me

in order to escape.

This will work for both of us.

Then at least I can say that

I didn't let your father down.

What do you think?

Do you think it would work?

I'm talking to you.

Jing Yao.

Say something.

What can we do?

So let's run?

You truly

do not disappoint.

Liu,

this gem.

It's likely to have fallen off from

the murderer's saddle.

Let me see the guest list.

Within the guest list,

whose saddle do you think

will be able to

match this gem?

I'll start searching.

The daughter of a third-class general.

Siyao.

Li Jun.

Salt merchant from the Capital.

His wealth rivals that of a country.

Wang Su.

The Commander-in-Chief.

Son of General Pei Zhang.

Hunting for forest owls.

Left in the afternoon.

Forest owls are only active until dawn.

How could he have hunted them in the afternoon?

What...

I mean, what do you mean?

You found the murderer?

Liu,

the evidence is now in our hands,

but I need to inspect it for further verification.

I speculate

that the murderer has a solid background.

We need to tread carefully.

Let's send this to the evidence room.

Also,

Don't inform Official Ge

about this piece of evidence.

Don't worry.

Official Ge assigned a team of Jinyiwei Guards

for us to ensure our investigation

runs smoothly.

Also,

take this.

Tell me.

Hey! You can't eat that.

In the Capital,

if we have the Jinyiwei Guards with us,

other than General Pei Zhang,

we can literally probe anyone.

Anyone.

My stupid mouth.

Hey! Wait for me.

Mansion of Prince Rui

Jinyiwei Notebook

Father.

Li Yu wrote about the Dayintuya

being lost into his notebook.

We're lucky it didn't fall into the hands of the Jinyiwei Guards.

Otherwise...

we're done for.

This is not over.

You killed a Jinyiwei Guard.

It's not going to be easy to wrap this up.

Find a scapegoat.

Sir, are you interested?

Can you just sell me the feathers?

Are you crazy? No!

Ma Song!

Let's go.

By the way,

I need you to keep a watchful eye, especially now.

If there are any unfamiliar faces entering the city,

make sure that

they have a clean background.

Yes.

Ruoxuan Teahouse

Why are there so many lunatics in the Capital?

My crossbow.

Border Bandit, Ma Song

Leader of Bandits, Li Huangwu

Get our things loaded, and quickly

locate the ghost market.

Let's get things done.

Alright, boss.

Border Bandit, A Meng

A Meng, you rascal.

You're seriously looking for girls at this critical moment?

Come on, forget it.

Just let him be.

He will definitely look for us in the ghost market.

He already went missing for two days

before we entered the city anyway.

It's not affecting our plans.

I'm just worried that he'll get in trouble!

He's a grown man, he can take care of himself.

Moreover,

with his skills,

no one can hurt him.

If that isn't all,

this is the Capital.

I'm a constable of the Capital, Shi Jing Yao.

Do me a favor.

What are you doing?

Turn around.

Uh...

What are you doing?

Stand properly.

Move aside.

Hey! What are you doing?

Give me your hand.

Come on.

Stand properly, turn around.

Come on.

Three, two, one.

Are you sure you're a constable?

You're a freaking thief!

Catch the thief!

There's a thief!

Impudent fools!

You dare commit a crime in General Pei Zhang's residence?

You're accomplices.

Whose accomplice?

I think he's talking about

that guy just now.

Who'd be his accomplice?!

Don't move.

Spare our lives, madam.

Don't move.

Otherwise...

I might miss.

Sir, Sir!

Sir, there are thieves in the residence.

Again?!

The thief,

he stole our horse.

What did he steal?

Horse.

Horse?

Liu!

Liu! I'm back!

Liu!

Liu!

Hey! Let's talk this out.

Hey! Don't come any closer.

N-No! Don't!

Don't you come closer.

Stay away!

God!

Warrior, please spare my life.

Don't!

Help!

It's not me.

Who?!

Jing Yao!

How rude can you get?

Do you know who this is?

This is our esteemed guest!

Sir.

My apologies.

You had just returned,

and had to be beaten up like this.

I'm glad you're now seated.

Please have a cup of tea.

I've brought the horse.

Is he really the murderer?

Liu.

Look at me.

Have a good look at me.

Think for my mother.

What kind of lives

have we been living?

I've been a constable for so many years,

and I'm still that low-ranked constable.

Right now,

this is a huge case

involving General Pei Zhang and his son.

It's right in front of me.

I must use this opportunity.

I will reveal everything!

General Pei Zhang has arrived!

This is the Capital.

We are in a government office.

We!

We're government officials.

We will not tolerate your insolence!

Constable,

you trespassed my residence,

stole my horse,

tied up my men.

You tell me,

who is the insolent one?

Since you've asked,

I'll tell you who the insolent one is.

Jinyiwei Guard Li Yu

died in the hunting grounds.

The murderer used a

sharpened broad arrowhead.

This type of arrowheads

are mainly used to hunt deer, bears,

or large animals in general.

It couldn't have been used to hunt a human being.

Hence,

that was not a stray shot.

It was an intended shot,

which means it was a premeditated murder.

Next,

according to the angle and the depth

of the wound on the corpse, I speculate that

the murderer's location

can only be in the nearby forest.

In that forest,

I found something

that the murderer left behind.

But I wasn't able to immediately

identify who it belonged to.

Simultaneously, yesterday

your son was in the hunting grounds as well.

I heard that his prize was a forest owl.

Forest owls only

come out at night.

But your son was hunting during the day,

and he left before nightfall.

I can't help but wonder what his prize truly was.

Henceforth,

who do you think is the insolent one?

Sir, my Lord.

Let's talk about this.

We can discuss.

Do you know

who I am?

General Pei Zhang, the Prince Rui.

Commander of the West Division in Daning.

The highest ranking official of the dynasty.

So without evidence,

you tie up my men.

I can sentence you to death.

That's why I went to your residence,

to see if your son's saddle

is missing anything.

What is that?

If you untie me, I'll give it to you.

Just tied.

Aren't you worried that I may destroy the evidence,

and then kill you?

General,

you underestimate me.

I am a government servant,

performing my duties to enforce the law.

It's touching me.

Within half an hour,

the Jinyiwei Guards will arrive.

If you intend to stay,

the death sentence could be for you,

and everyone in your residence.

Not me.

There's a position in the weaving factory

that is still pending an official.

What do you think?

The one who died is a Jinyiwei Guard.

I promote you into to an Upper Third official.

I'll also give you a thousand taels.

It's intolerable that you know

and break the law.

I only have one son.

Just tell me

what you want.

Ridiculous!

You're an important First Rank official,

yet you violate the law,

to protect a murderer

that killed an imperial guard. Do you know how serious this is?

At least 10,000 taels.

T-This is...

Congratulations, Constable Shi,

for being able to

apprehend the murderer so quickly.

Amazing.

Thank you for your efforts, my Lord.

It's just a misunderstanding.

Everything has been settled.

My Lord...

You can leave.

If there's anything else...

Are you in charge of Li Yu's case?

Yes.

Where is the murderer?

Your chief, Official Ge,

has passed this case to me.

Where's the murderer?

Apprehended.

Someone from a different region.

Inside.

So you've been bribed.

I am

Jinyiwei Guard Long Yao.

Li Yu's death is unnatural.

What did he tell you

after both of us parted ways?

Why did you kill him?

I have nothing to do

with Li Yu's death.

I will not stand and tolerate this slander.

Present your evidence.

If he didn't secure any evidence,

you wouldn't have come here yourself.

Well, he could have genuinely just wanted to visit.

Seems like you've reached a deal.

You better think this through!

You're just a lowly Jinyiwei Guard.

What can you do to me?

Alright.

I will make you eat your own words.

Help!

How could he possibly have the Tempered Sword?

Tempered?

That's one of the ten greatest weapons.

Destroy the evidence.

That kid won't be able to last

in Long Yao's hands.

You!

Magistrate Liu,

are you alright?

I'm fine.

It's nothing.

Totally nothing.

General Pei Zhang.

You know what to do.

Don't worry.

All of our lives

are in your hands.

Centurion, Chao Ge

Lord Feng sent you to search for the Dayintuya.

Have you found it?

Shou Chun has done you wrong,

Lord Feng.

The Dayintuya is not here.
