There's two sides to everybody,
but that side of him

was just pure,
I would say, terror.

St. augustine, Florida,

boasts a year-round
friendly climate,

perfect for tourists
and beachgoers alike.

And, to some, it also
represents a fresh start.

Born and raised in Pennsylvania,
24-year-old Alicia eakins

has dealt with more than her
fair share of tough times.

Alicia's parents were killed
on July 10, 1982,

on a motorcycle accident.

I was livin' in West Virginia
and I moved to their house.

I raised Alicia
with my daughter kristel.

Alicia was always sad
after her parents died.

She was never the same
after that, I don't think.

It really hurt her
very deeply.

Alicia hopes
that a move to Florida

will help separate her
from her past

and ease the pain of her loss.

Alicia was always down
for new experiences

and new challenges

so, I think, whenever
she went to Florida,

she definitely was looking
for a fresh start.

But starting over is
not without its challenges.

that the whole state
looks like Miami beach.

But it doesn't.

There is a side to St. augustine

that's not apparent
to the outsiders.

Stokes landing.

he used to take me
hunting here, before...

a couple months ago.

you know, very quickly

and shockingly, and tragic.

since he was a little boy

and, now, it's just him
and his mom.

Alicia settles in to life

at the secluded Stokes landing.

Whenever Alicia met rj,
she was trying to better her life.

She just wanted
a clean, new life

and she was on her way
to do that.

But the thing
about living near the marsh

is that you never know
what's hiding.

has settled into life
in a secluded house

on the marshes right outside
of St. augustine, Florida,

far from anything and anyone.

Ut she has no idea what,

and who, is lurking
around the property.

to confront another side to rj,

that she never saw coming.

with a homeless shelter,

downtown St. augustine.

After happily living
with rj faba for only one month,

Alicia eakins gets
a firsthand view

of his violent streak
she never knew existed.

I think that watchin' someone

almost beat someone
half to death,

in the manner that he did,

I think she was scared to death

and I think she knew more so
what he was capable of.

During the course
of the investigation,

I developed sufficient evidence
to arrest rj faba

for the aggravated assault
and the aggravated battery.

While rj faba
sits in a jail cell,

Alicia wonders what else

she doesn't know
about her new boyfriend.

Within days,
faba is released on bail.

But Alicia has had enough.

In February, after moving
into the house on the marsh

such a short time ago,
she decides to leave.

Alicia hopes
this is the last time

she'll ever step foot
on Stokes landing

and concentrates on getting
her life back on track.

on march 5th.

sheriff's department

launches their search
for Alicia,

they pay a visit
to Stokes landing.

When did she move out?

Couple weeks ago.

I haven't seen her since.

Not even a phone call?
-Well.

I left her
a couple messages.

But she never
called me back.

Not really.

I mean, she can be
a little crazy at times.

Do you think
she's okay?

Where's her bedroom?

Apparently, when investigators
went to rj's house,

they didn't find anything.

There was no reason to believe
that foul play was suspected

when they interviewed rj

about the disappearance
of Alicia eakins.

Only weeks after
she's reported missing,

the case goes cold.

We were informed
that the police had done

everything they could
and that, now, it was up to US.

We had all these fliers made up,
in all different colors.

And we stapled them
to every telephone pole

and, every other day,

all the posters were down

and we'd have to go get 'em
and put 'em all back up

and staple all the missing
posters again.

Nearly 3 months pass

with so signs of Alicia eakins.

Then, in a dumping ground
known as the blocks --

found some great stuff
out here

about a week ago.

Two men searching
through the trash

stumble upon something
incredibly disturbing.

It's rj faba, with a body.

But it's not the body
of Alicia eakins.

Alicia eakins had been
missing for nearly 3 months

when her ex-boyfriend rj faba

is caught redhanded
with a body in the woods.

Only, the body isn't Alicia's.

I met her
down by the lagoon.

Angela durling was
a happy-go-lucky,

carefree sort of 16-year-old

who has her whole life
stretched out in front of her.

The investigation resulted

in Mr. Faba being charged
with miss durling's death

and he was sentenced
to 40 years in prison.

Miss eakins's case
was still unresolved.

And rj faba
swears he had nothing to do

with Alicia's disappearance.

I just never met rj,
never heard his voice,

but I don't know.

Just something felt off
from that whole situation.

There was something --
I don't know.

It just didn't seem right.

Seven long years
after Alicia eakins vanishes,

St. Johns county
sheriff's office

reopens the investigation
as a cold case.

The case was assigned
to a very seasoned

and experienced investigator --
skip Cole.

Rj faba's name
comes up again and again

throughout the investigation.

But rj, still in prison,
isn't talking.

So they decide to grill
his former confidant.

Mr. Hare.

Whoa!

I didn't mean

Earl hare was
as close to the family,

or at least as close to rj,
as anybody else was.

Alicia went missing.

but he never came.

she was hangin' around
the house one day

and, one day, she wasn't.

her whereabouts
remain a mystery.

from his old friend Earl hare,

investigators again question
rj faba about her disappearance.

They get more
than they bargained for.

Rj faba has now confessed
to killing Angela durling,

as well as his own father.

Still, the question is --
did he also kill Alicia eakins?

Rj now admits that, a few days
after they broke up,

he convinced Alicia to come back

to Stokes landing
for a friendly visit.

Mr. Faba, in fact,
did kill Ms. Eakins,

by smothering her
with a pillow.

He placed her body,
after she was dead,

into a nylon bag.

Then, faba took her out
to the ocala national forest

and buried her and marked it
in such a way

that he could revisit
the burial site.

Come on.
Pick it up.

This is it.

That's where
I left her body.

Don't move.

I never wanted to hurt
her, you know.

That's the truth.

Then why did you?

In addition
to the 40-year sentence

for the killing
of Angela durling,

Ralph faba was sentenced to two
25-year consecutive sentences

for the killing
of Alicia eakins

and his father, Ralph faba sr.

For Alicia's family,

the discovery of her body
is bittersweet.

After 8 years,
they've had to let go

of the hope
she might still be alive.

Cathie: I was happy Alicia was found.
I was thrilled that it was over.

But how did it all go so bad?

How did it all get
to that point?

I believe, if
Alicia was around now,

I believe she'd have
a good life now

'cause she was on that road
when she was so young.

And I believe that
she would be really happy.
