There's two sides to everybody, but that side of him

was just pure, I would say, terror.

St. augustine, Florida,

boasts a year-round friendly climate,

perfect for tourists and beachgoers alike.

And, to some, it also represents a fresh start.

Born and raised in Pennsylvania, 24-year-old Alicia eakins

has dealt with more than her fair share of tough times.

Alicia's parents were killed on July 10, 1982,

on a motorcycle accident.

I was livin' in West Virginia and I moved to their house.

I raised Alicia with my daughter kristel.

Alicia was always sad after her parents died.

She was never the same after that, I don't think.

It really hurt her very deeply.

Alicia hopes that a move to Florida

will help separate her from her past

and ease the pain of her loss.

Alicia was always down for new experiences

and new challenges

so, I think, whenever she went to Florida,

she definitely was looking for a fresh start.

But starting over is not without its challenges.

but Alicia's not the type of girl to give up easily.

I never worried about Alicia, ever.

She was very strong.

The two hit it off immediately.

Rj lives outside of St. augustine,

off the beaten path.

It's an area that's at odds with how

many people picture Florida.

Florida is one of those states

that is constantly in development.

I don't know if outsiders think

that the whole state looks like Miami beach.

But it doesn't.

There is a side to St. augustine

that's not apparent to the outsiders.

What is this place?

Seems far from the water?

It's called Stokes landing.

So beautiful.

Yeah. My dad takes me --

well,

he used to take me hunting here, before...

He -- he died a couple months ago.

I'm so sorry. How did...?

He -- it was suicide.

He -- he hung himself.

I was the one who found the body.

I think Alicia could've related.

I think they could've connected in that aspect

because she lost both of hers, you know, very quickly

and shockingly, and tragic.

surrounded by marshland and forest,

and no neighbors in plain view.

Alicia instantly feels right at home.

Alicia liked the seclusion.

She grew up in the cities,

you know, she just liked that quiet nature.

She liked the fact that she's around the marshes

and nothing really around her.

Rj's lived there since he was a little boy

and, now, it's just him and his mom.

I was a little bit concerned, but if she was happy,

then I was gonna be happy for her.

Within days, Alicia settles in to life

at the secluded Stokes landing.

Whenever Alicia met rj, she was trying to better her life.

She just wanted a clean, new life

and she was on her way to do that.

But the thing about living near the marsh

is that you never know what's hiding.

Aah!

24-four-year-old Alicia eakins

has settled into life in a secluded house

on the marshes right outside of St. augustine, Florida,

far from anything and anyone.

Ut she has no idea what,

and who, is lurking around the property.

Aah! No.

Name's Earl.

I'm a friend of rj's.

Who just shows up in someone's yard like that?

That's kinda how it's done up here.

Earl hare was a guy of questionable character.

He didn't have a very good reputation.

But Earl hare has been a fixture at Stokes landing for some time,

and a close confidant to rj.

This is where he did it, you know,

my father.

I'm so sorry. I had no idea.

It's hard to look out and see this

every day, you know?

But, in a weird way,

it makes me feel closer to him, too.

So, I heard you ran into Earl today.

Ran into him?

He was walkin' around like he owned the place.

of security and charm from rj.

At the same time, his mom is very nice.

And she might've been inclined to think

that rj got his calm and kind side from his mom.

But Alicia is about to confront another side to rj,

that she never saw coming.

Rj was a night manager with a homeless shelter,

downtown St. augustine.

Hey, man. We're all full. I'm sorry.

You gotta get outta here, okay?

I said to leave, buddy. All right?

I just need a bed, man.

I told you to get out of here.

You like bein' a big man around here, don't you?

Rj, what are you doing?!

After happily living with rj faba for only one month,

Alicia eakins gets a firsthand view

of his violent streak she never knew existed.

I think that watchin' someone

almost beat someone half to death,

in the manner that he did,

I think she was scared to death

and I think she knew more so what he was capable of.

During the course of the investigation,

I developed sufficient evidence to arrest rj faba

for the aggravated assault and the aggravated battery.

While rj faba sits in a jail cell,

Alicia wonders what else

she doesn't know about her new boyfriend.

Within days, faba is released on bail.

But Alicia has had enough.

In February, after moving into the house on the marsh

such a short time ago, she decides to leave.

Can I come in?

It's your house.

I get that you're upset.

It's time for me to leave, rj.

Alicia hopes this is the last time

she'll ever step foot on Stokes landing

and concentrates on getting her life back on track.

Alicia eakins simply disappears.

Alicia's aunt cathie gets worried.

But she would always call, always call and check in.

And, now, she didn't show up.

We knew something was wrong.

Finally, Alicia's family files

a missing-persons report on march 5th.

Woman: St. Johns county sheriff's department.

How can I help you?

When St. Johns sheriff's department

launches their search for Alicia,

they pay a visit to Stokes landing.

When did she move out?

Couple weeks ago.

I haven't seen her since.

Not even a phone call? -Well.

I left her a couple messages.

But she never called me back.

That didn't worry you?

Not really.

I mean, she can be a little crazy at times.

Do you think she's okay?

Where's her bedroom?

Over there.

Mind if I take a look?

Go right ahead.

Apparently, when investigators went to rj's house,

they didn't find anything.

There was no reason to believe that foul play was suspected

when they interviewed rj

about the disappearance of Alicia eakins.

Only weeks after she's reported missing,

the case goes cold.

We were informed that the police had done

everything they could and that, now, it was up to US.

We had all these fliers made up, in all different colors.

And we stapled them to every telephone pole

and, every other day,

all the posters were down

and we'd have to go get 'em and put 'em all back up

and staple all the missing posters again.

Nearly 3 months pass

with so signs of Alicia eakins.

Then, in a dumping ground known as the blocks --

found some great stuff out here

about a week ago.

Two men searching through the trash

stumble upon something incredibly disturbing.

What're you doin', man?

It's rj faba, with a body.

But it's not the body of Alicia eakins.

Alicia eakins had been missing for nearly 3 months

when her ex-boyfriend rj faba

is caught redhanded with a body in the woods.

Only, the body isn't Alicia's.

Tell me about Angela durling.

What do you wanna know?

I met her down by the lagoon.

Angela durling was a happy-go-lucky,

carefree sort of 16-year-old

who has her whole life stretched out in front of her.

Come on.

Need some help?

Um -- -sorry.

I didn't mean to scare you.

I was hiking nearby and I saw you.

Thought maybe you could use a hand.

Okay.

I'm rj, by the way.

Angela.

It looks like the, the port

to your engine inductor

is, clogged.

My dad's gonna be really mad

if he finds out my car broke down.

Don't worry. He'll never know.

When she started to complain

about "something wrong with my truck"

and he says, "yeah, well,

I'm kinda handy around a truck,"

you establish a small bond that becomes a stronger bond,

even in a very short period of time.

Wow. That's really cool.

The investigation resulted

in Mr. Faba being charged with miss durling's death

and he was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Miss eakins's case was still unresolved.

And rj faba swears he had nothing to do

with Alicia's disappearance.

I just never met rj, never heard his voice,

but I don't know.

Just something felt off from that whole situation.

There was something -- I don't know.

It just didn't seem right.

Seven long years after Alicia eakins vanishes,

St. Johns county sheriff's office

reopens the investigation as a cold case.

The case was assigned to a very seasoned

and experienced investigator -- skip Cole.

Rj faba's name comes up again and again

throughout the investigation.

But rj, still in prison, isn't talking.

So they decide to grill his former confidant.

Mr. Hare.

Whoa!

I didn't mean to scare ya.

Who just shows up in someone's yard like that?

Earl hare was as close to the family,

or at least as close to rj, as anybody else was.

Been lookin' over this file.

It says here you were working at the flea market

the weekend Alicia went missing.

Anyone else there with you?

No.

Rj was supposed to show up, but he never came.

What about Alicia?

You see her there?

It's like I keep tellin' ya --

she was hangin' around the house one day

and, one day, she wasn't.

That's all.

You know,

I think you probably wanted her outta the picture.

And you did what you could

to make sure she stayed gone.

No!

That's all I know!

I swear.

Earl, I'm gonna need more than that.

I don't know no more than that!

Not like he does.

Rj knows everything.

Eight years after

24-year-old Alicia eakins goes missing,

her whereabouts remain a mystery.

Based on information from his old friend Earl hare,

investigators again question rj faba about her disappearance.

They get more than they bargained for.

Saw in your file,

when daddy passed, back in '99.

What do you think he'd make of all this?

Think he'd be proud of what you've become?

What do I care?

I'm glad he's dead.

In October of 1999,

Ralph faba sr was found deceased

with an apparent hanging under a tree in his backyard.

Everyone assumed it was suicide.

Until now.

I hated my father.

Why do you think I killed him?

Strangled him.

Crushed the life right out of him.

It's a shocking admission.

Rj faba has now confessed to killing Angela durling,

as well as his own father.

Still, the question is -- did he also kill Alicia eakins?

Rj now admits that, a few days after they broke up,

he convinced Alicia to come back

to Stokes landing for a friendly visit.

The house is ready for you.

Whenever you're ready to come back.

Rj,

I'm not moving back.

Yes, you are.

This is where you belong.

Rj, i'm...

Not moving back here.

But this is your home.

This --

I shouldn't have come here tonight.

Mr. Faba, in fact, did kill Ms. Eakins,

by smothering her with a pillow.

He placed her body, after she was dead,

into a nylon bag.

Then, faba took her out to the ocala national forest

and buried her and marked it in such a way

that he could revisit the burial site.

Come on. Pick it up.

This is it.

That's where I left her body.

Don't move.

I never wanted to hurt her, you know.

That's the truth.

Then why did you?

In addition to the 40-year sentence

for the killing of Angela durling,

Ralph faba was sentenced to two 25-year consecutive sentences

for the killing of Alicia eakins

and his father, Ralph faba sr.

For Alicia's family,

the discovery of her body is bittersweet.

After 8 years, they've had to let go

of the hope she might still be alive.

Cathie: I was happy Alicia was found. I was thrilled that it was over.

But how did it all go so bad?

How did it all get to that point?

I believe, if Alicia was around now,

I believe she'd have a good life now

'cause she was on that road when she was so young.

And I believe that she would be really happy.

She was just a beautiful soul,

the best person I ever met in my life.
