Episode 4

Feng!

Young Master.

- Feng? Feng? Where is Feng? - Come back soon.

I’m here. Are you blind or what?

Feng, something’s wrong!

What’s wrong?

- I have a bad news. - I’ll wait for you!

A rumor spreading across the city

says Longzhu Gang took the gold thread

Just now, some silk workers gave

butcher Song Laosan a hard time for giving short weight.

They even threatened to report on that.

That old silk worker

refused to let go.

He said after the gold thread was gone,

many silk workers had to stop working,

so they are suffering a loss.

But…

Enough now. Stop it.

What about Second Master?

You didn’t ask him to deal with it?

He’s been looking for Dachun.

I can’t find him.

Lady.

Persian merchant’s reply? What does it say?

We’ve had it translated.

It says the Persian Princess’s dowry

can’t be late.

The Military Officer is trying his best

to search for the gold thread.

It says that nothing suspicious has gone out of city.

What should we do then?

If the gold thread is still in the city,

how should we find it?

Prison

- Come on, easy bro. - Go! Quickly!

I have my own legs.

Shut up and go!

Fatty, Skinny,

what are you doing here?

Master!

Second Master Lyu has found Dachun.

But…

But Dachun…

Shut up!

Bring them down and entertain them well.

- Yes! - Move! Come on!

Move! Go!

- You two, take her too. - Come on!

Yes!

Get out!

Long Aoyi, come with me!

That jailor is not properly dressed and walks funny.

There’s something wrong.

Move!

Come on!

Move!

Sir,

I don’t think I have met you before.

Move!

Come on!

Snake Gang!

Master! Help me!

Master!

Fatty!

Master!

Fatty!

What were you saying about Dachun?

He’s found?

Dachun… is dead.

What?

Let’s go.

Careful.

Prison

Qiyan sent you, right?

I’ll double whatever amount of money he offered.

Today is your day to die.

Go to Longzhu Gang

and find Second Master Lyu,

just ask for however much you want from him.

Master! Take the sabre!

Li Qingliu

put all his thoughts on silk weaving techniques.

He’s always persistent.

His silk weaving skills

are inferior to none in history.

That’s the fortune of Silver City.

What’s more, the business tax

Xinsilu pays every year

covers the salaries of almost

half of the officials in Silver City.

I have ordered the county magistrate to release him.

As for the customs seal,

please do not worry about that.

We still have Prince Zhao as our supporter.

Here.

Come.

Master Long!

Here.

- Master, sit. - I’m glad you are OK.

We were so worried about you.

Young Master.

You are hurt.

Thank you for saving me, Master Li.

Dachun is dead.

How did he die?

I was told he hung himself on a dead tree.

He was wearing

that torn uniform of him.

He left a note,

saying it’s you who ordered him to steal the gold thread.

Dachun died miserably.

Master,

if Dachun had really stolen the gold thread,

as a good son,

he would have left something to his parents,

and would have met them at least.

You must clear his name, Master!

But…

Master Long can’t go out at all now.

Master Li.

Master Li, sorry to startle you.

Sorry for all that happened.

That’s all misunderstandings.

You are free to go.

Master, what’s wrong with your hand?

Just a scratch, nothing serious.

Let’s get out of here. Come on.

Please.

Yan Bin, put out notice now.

Tell everyone Xinsilu is offering 10,000 taels for the gold thread.

Don’t bother.

You can directly give me the money.

You?

You were in a fight which hurt a prince.

You are going to rot in jail!

You dog!

Sir, I want to plead for Miss Long.

Since Miss Long and I were caught together,

it was a misunderstanding for me,

so it must also be a misunderstanding for her.

Well…

But… She…

I don’t know if you know or not

that Miss Long is a friend of His Highness.

Now that His Highness has forgiven me,

he will forgive Miss Long, too.

I got it. I got it. Please.

Please.

Master.

Please.

Master.

Let’s go.

This is not over!

Prison

Master Li,

Mr. Du is giving a banquet at Du’s Mansion tonight

to celebrate Third Prince’s recovery.

He sent me to invite you to the banquet.

Thank you.

Please tell Mr. Du that

I have to go freshen up before I go.

I’ll be going then.

Yan Bin, go prepare some gifts.

Master,

Miss Du was originally going to be here for you,

but she had to prepare for the banquet at home.

It’s OK.

Master Long.

Prison

I see you are pretty busy.

I’m going home.

Goodbye.

That 10,000 taels of silver…

I’m not really that busy though.

Let’s go.

I must uncover the truth behind

Dachun’s death and the missing gold thread.

I have to go to that silk manor sooner or later.

OK then.

North Street of Silver City

Your Highness.

Look,

Xinsilu this is the richest north part of Silver City,

many stores are gathered here.

If there’s some place to buy pepper,

this is the most possible one.

Xinsilu

Stop. Stop.

Xinsilu

Don’t forget

to verify this.

Got it?

OK.

Sir, I’m the owner of this store.

How can I help you?

It’s a fluff.

It can cause an allergy once it’s sucked into your nose.

The hygiene condition is poor.

And look at your counter, so high.

What if your customer were a dwarf?

That’s not considerate at all.

Who’s that?

He’s handsome though.

He doesn’t look like a small potato.

Sir,

if you want to buy clothes,

you can come this way to be measured.

Look at you.

Look at your attitude.

You are by no means enthusiastic.

And you call yourself the best store in Silver City?

Is he here to make trouble?

What for?

Smile.

Thank Your Highness for your advice.

Master, the master is back.

- Master. - Master.

Master.

Please pardon me for the poor treat.

Come on, make way.

Make way for me.

What is a beggar doing here?

Out. Get out.

What beggar? Watch what you are saying!

Let her in.

Master Long.

I was arrested because of you.

So you are Prince Zhao?

Judging by your exaggerated

outfit bedecked with jewels,

I knew you were different from those nouveau riche.

Master Long, please take a seat there.

Master never allows a girl to get close to him.

For the first time, he took a girl here,

and she’s a beggar.

For what happened at the big bazar,

I apologize to you.

Your Highness,

how can I help you? Please tell.

What? You sound like

I’m not welcomed here.

I wouldn’t dare. Of course you are welcomed.

What else could I do here?

I’m here to buy clothes of course.

Your Highness, do you favor anything here?

Too bad,

you don’t have

what I want.

In the whole Silver City,

my silk store is second to none

as to patterns of the clothes.

Red Cloud Soft Xuan.

According to the Public Clothes Records,

Xuan means solid colored dress

without any parti-color or stain.

But in Red Cloud Soft Xuan,

red cloud pattern is blended in.

That’s not possible to make in this world.

If Your Highness wants it,

you should go visit the heavens.

You are at the wrong place today.

Master Li is experienced and knowledgeable,

I believe you if you say so.

Actually I’m here

to buy a dress.

As for the requirements,

it should be as light as Empress Zhao’s pleated dress,

and as magnificent as Princess Anle’s hundred-bird dress.

He wants it light and also magnificent?

That’s deliberately making trouble.

I heard that it’s almost time

for the selection of the guild leader in silk industry.

And Master Li is a popular candidate.

They all say that you are a

rare talent in Sichuan embroidery.

Then my requirements must be

a piece of cake to you.

Now that Your Highness has asked,

I’ll of course try my best.

Please.

Master Long, please.

Optimistic

This unscrupulous merchant!

He must have exploited so many ordinary people

to be able to build such a big mansion.

Please.

It looks normal outside,

but holds many secrets inside.

Master Li

is really something else.

That’s just superficial.

Your Highness,

please take a rest in the reception room.

OK.

The Sichuan silk is not light enough.

This fabric is too soft.

Master, you should pick one.

These are all old designs.

I can’t cope with him with old designs.

The ones outside are new ones.

But they are still not good enough for him.

That is...

Eat.

You are not here to buy a dress, are you?

How do you know?

What are you here to do?

Come on, tell me.

I’m actually here to…

Why did you stop?

Here they are.

Peacock silk

was made based on Tihua silk.

Its weaving techniques were invented by our Xinsilu.

This fabric

is the only one in the world.

Don’t just say it. I need to try.

What size do you want?

Just make it according to Master Long’s size.

That has gone bad.

Need to measure me?

Come on.

What is this?

I can’t fit in.

The sleeves are so broad,

is this a pair of trousers or a dress?

It’s suffocating me.

Oh, no, this is worth 10,000 taels of silver.

I’m going to be scolded.

Which part is torn?

Is Master Li stumped

simply by a girl’s dress?

What should I do?

It’s OK.

Master is here.

What’s taking so long?

Master, it’s all my fault.

Master Long put it on herself,

and the waist part is torn.

Jun’er, go find me a strip of cloth.

Yes.

Master.

What… what are you doing?

Quiet, put your hands down.

It’s just a torn dress.

Come on.

Your arm.

Raise your hands.

Put them down.

Raise them again.

I told you not to move.

It’s OK.

You really couldn’t see?

Never let yourself get carried away.

A floor length dress with the pattern of a begonia in mist,

covered with a Pinyue silk cloak embroidered with a butterfly.

It’s as if a butterfly followed the scent

and landed on the begonia.

You are right, Your Highness.

That’s just what it means.

Bravo.

Master Li is a true master.

That is truly artful.

But I still have a question.

Why are the sleeves so broad?

This style is actually from Dayi State.

I altered it according to Master Long’s figure.

I made the sleeves broad

to make it look harmonious as a whole.

And the broader sleeves also

conform to Master Long’s lively nature.

Good, Master Li.

I like this dress

very much.

Do you like it?

It doesn’t matter.

I can’t afford it anyway,

and I don’t like wearing it.

What if I give it to you as a gift?

You were asking

why I came earlier.

And now,

I need to ask a favor from you.

You ask me for a favor?

As long as it doesn’t break the law.

This Yulan hairpin

is not only a hairpin,

it’s also a gift from the royal family to envoys.

What do you think?

You know magic tricks?

Can you make some food out of it for me?

Can you?

You are always thinking about food.

Just do me a favor and take it.

It’s for me?

Fine.

There’s a banquet at Du’s Mansion tonight,

I’m new here,

could you please

come with me to the banquet?

Please give a hand

to this poor non-native.

I just recovered from a major disease.

My head hurts.

A prince pretending to be poor. I’ve seen everything.

Fine.

Even if it’s hell,

I’ll go with you to it.

Xinsilu

Please, Master Long.

Your Highness’s carriage is really majestic.

I’m wondering if I’ll have the honor

to experience it myself.

Please, Master Li.

Wu Lin, slower.

Long…

I like this cushion.

Congrats, Mr. Du.

Please come in.

Congratulations, Mr. Du.

- Congratulations, Mr. Du. - Thank you.

Du’s Mansion Come in please.

Du’s Mansion - Congrats, Mr. Du. - Come in please.

Greetings, Your Highness.

You may rise.

Thank you, Your Highness.

Mr. Du.

This is…

A new friend of mine in Silver City.

May I ask which mansion this lady is from?

My name’s Long Aoyi.

Long Aoyi?

You are…

The new master of Longzhu Gang.

So you are Master Long.

Entertain Master Long properly.

Xiaoxian,

lead the way for His Highness.

Your Highness, come with me please.

Stay close.

Keep an eye on Long Aoyi.

Du’s Mansion

First of all,

Moral Principles I want to thank all fellow officials

Moral Principles and the guild leaders of all industries

for coming to my mansion.

This banquet

is for a triple happiness.

First is to welcome His Highness,

second is to celebrate His Highness’s recovery.

And right just now,

I received a message says

His Majesty has broken out of the encirclement and returned to the capital safely.

This good news brought more honor

to this banquet!

Well put!

His Majesty was able to break out this time,

it’s all thanks to Mr. Du’s assistance.

This banquet is also a celebration for Mr. Du.

Mr. Du, I congratulate you for

being promoted to Left Guarding General.

Congratulations!

Stop it! Where are your manners?

Long Aoyi,

you were just released from the jail,

how did you sneak in Mr. Du’s mansion?

Drive her out!

Maid!

Bring this dish to her.

Your Highness,

don’t let a lowly nobody ruin all the fun.

Your Highness.

That’s Li Qingliu.

Allow me to introduce you.

You are about the same age.

One is from the royal family, and is in an important position.

The other is a talented businessman.

If all young men of our Tang Dynasty are like you two,

that would be…

I have already visited Master Li.

Master Li

is truly

a talented young man with rare skills.

Qingliu is one of the best businessmen

in our Silver City.

They often say that

a good businessman

are always low-key.

I heard that Master Li

just lost some valuable gold thread.

Looks like you failed to be low-key.

That’s why however ambitious you are,

you should not be arrogant.

I’m just a simple businessman.

I don’t have that kind of complicated thoughts.

You are worrying too much, Your Highness.

Li Qingliu, how can you talk like that?

It’s OK.

Here.

I’ll propose another toast to you.

Please.

Please.

My friends, make yourselves at home!

- Don’t restrain yourselves, please. - Please.

The guild leader of silk industry

got together with the master of Longzhu Gang.

They fought into the jail

and hugged each other home.

And now they are here like a couple.

By the way,

Mr. Du, have you arranged everything

with the government investment?

That’s what I’m doing now.

Master Li is right here,

I’ll say it then.

Qingliu, this time

His Highness came with a mission.

Our Silver City must assign a government investment

up to 100,000 taels of gold.

Claim some and be a model.

I can’t accept government investment.

Why not?

Government investment,

although it’s called investment,

it’s actually collecting tax.

It’s already abolished as early as the first year of Wude’s reign.

And now it only exists in several departments in the capital.

I believe there’re no official documents

issued about the investment now.

Master Li, you are right.

It’s just like the coming selection of guild leader,

although Master Li is the most popular candidate,

there’re no official documents about it yet,

so there’s still no guarantee.

Am I right, Master Li?

It all depends on human effort.

I’ll naturally try my best.

Why is Xiaoxian still not out?

My Lady, I heard from the county magistrate that

it was Master Li who pleaded

for that Long Aoyi.

He even took her back to the silk manor.

She’s just a lowly girl.

Nothing to worry about.

Qingliu must have taken her back

to the silk manor for the gold thread.

My Lady, please get ready then.

Master warned us repeatedly

that this dance must be a success.

Father has fought here and there with a spear in his hands,

of course he won’t waste me, the red tassel on the spear.

My friends, I suggest

we make toast poems.

A candle in wind,

half melts, half remains.

Liquor in the cup,

half gone, half remains.

No, no.

There was already a “remains” in the last one.

Picking up pearls in a dream,

one picked up, one lost.

Good one! That’s good.

That’s good.

Nice! Nice!

A horse died of hunger,

half meat, half crap.

A lowly girl is a lowly girl.

Just have fun with your upper class then.

I’m getting out of here.

Master Long, please wait.

Xiaoxian,

didn’t you prepare a dance?

Father,

there are so many distinguished guests here.

I fear that I’d become a disappointment.

Masters,

I’m only good at

some insignificant skills.

Why don’t we watch something new?

I heard

the lower class are full of amazing talents.

I don’t know if you are interested.

Maybe we should let Master Long dance for us.

Come on, a dance!

- Dance for us! - Right!

A dance please!

Master Long, dance for us!

Why not? Come on!

So let’s welcome Master Long of Longzhu Gang

to dance for us.

After the dance,

you can have that crystal necklace.

If a master of a gang could dance for us,

that would be a rare thing to see.

But a rough girl like her,

even if she dances,

it’ll be some wild dance.
