In 1946, Marshal Antonescu, ruler of Romania between 1940-1944,
Was sentenced to death for war crimes.
The execution was immortalized by the operator Ovidiu Gologan.
In 1994, the director Sergiu Nicolaescu put on a production named "The Mirror".
"The Mirror" is a biopic that aimed to rehabilitate the marshal.
The Marshal's Two Executions - A Comparison -
The 5th of June 1946. 17:45
I, Michael I, King of Romania, by the grace of God and will of the People,
Hail the ones who are present and those who are yet to come.
Regarding the report made out by our minister of Justice
I have enacted the following decision which will remain unchanged.
Article One: "We commute the sentence to death to hard labour during lifetime
For Constantin Pantazi, Radu Lecca and Eugen Cristescu.
They were condemned by the sentences pronounced on the 20th of May 1946
By People's Tribunal. Therefore, the act of commutation
Is enacted on the 1st of June 1946, in Bucharest.
Lucretiu Patrascanu, minister of Justice".
Squad, halt!
May the good Lord forgive you and set you free from all your sins.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit! Amen!
May the good Lord forgive you and set you free from all your sins.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit! Amen!
May the good Lord forgive you and set you free from all your sins.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit! Amen!
Forgive me, Father! I don't deserve to receive the Holy Communion.
I need their forgiveness. The will die because of me.
May the good Lord forgive you, marshal!
Attention! Halt!
Right-about!
In view of the order no. 53875, enacted on the 1st of June 1946,
By the minister Lucretiu Patrascanu, that reveals us the position
Of His Majesty, the King, who has rejected the requests of amnesty
Advanced by Ion Antonescu, Mihai Antonescu, Constantin Vasiliu
And Gheorghe Alexianu...
Since they were sentenced to death by the decision pronounced,
On the 17th of May 1946, by People's Tribunal, we are compelled
To respect the established rules, in order to inflict the death penalty.
Article 18 of the Regulation no.12, from 1942,
Establish the fact that we should cover your eyes and tie you from a pillar.
- Do you have anything to say? - I'd like that you cover my eyes
- With my own scarf! - What about you?
- I don't want such a thing. - What about you?
Me neither!
Squad leader! Proceed!
Listen to me, soldiers! Attention!
Be ready to shoot!
Load your weapons!
Fire!
Long live Romania!
If I had won the war, I would have had a statue
In every Romanian city.
I ask to be sentenced to death! And I refuse any act of amnesty!
That way, I can be sure that I'll die in Romania.
