company called Hiltz auto co.

I promised seven cars
for seven clients

and what a year it's been.

What I have done
and the team have done here

should inspire the world.

It gives you the chills,

to watch something
that you dreamed about

come to life.

I've never build a bike before.

I might have a dreamed too big.

It's been a hard year.

He warped the roof in the back,

Chad: Done more damage here
than you can imagine.

I've got a fire.

The rear end's not going to
fit in there.

Jolene: We're out of time
with this build.

If we don't finish a car
in a set amount of time,

then it's going to trickle down
on the other builds.

Chad: Have I done
all this work for nothing?

We lost Aaron this year
due to health issues

and it made it really hard
for us to keep up.

If I had Aaron rand,
and to show you how

farther ahead would be
because he could be

on the other door
while I'm making this side.

We are a man down
and everybody is tired out.

Jolene: We had originally
budgeted two weeks for this vote,

but it's going to take three.

There's no borrowing time
when the weather comes.

If we keep pushing
the deadlines,

then it's really going to,
you know,

jeopardize the final build
and whether we're going to

be able to fit it
into the schedule.

Chad: That means,
we're going to have to work

as a team tighter than ever.

I'd like to talk to you about
maybe commissioning a car.

We have a Austin A40 somerset.

Our client on this build
is Mike and Jocelyn

and they're going to
throw a party

to release their new champagne
they have.

We want it to be
prestige cuvee, elegance.

Jocelyn:
Best of the best.

I want to put the engine
in the back.

We're on our last build
and I'm inspired

because my back
is against the wall.

Cut a vehicle in half.

Now I've got to make
a skeleton to cover the engine.

This car seems like it's going
to be really, really,

really, really long.

Chad: To make this car
on time, on budget,

I am making a one piece car.
- At this point,

the car is half done.

I'm mentally done,
all the welds have to be made.

But I still have to get
to get a back Fender on it.

Jolene: This is a small budget
and it's a really big car.

So it's a lot of work.
- We've got one more left.

So I'm going to have to dig down

and do what I got to do
to get it done.

What I'm going to do now,
today is,

where Colton's probably going to
be up at the front end,

doing a little bit of welding...
He's going to do

a lot of welding,
by the looks of things.

We're going to get a nice angle
going to make our tail.

That's what we're going to do.

I'm going to pipe up
a tail today.

I want to go out with
a big bang this year.

I want I want to have
the last car say something

about Hiltz auto co.

We're going
to build an elegant roaster,

welding the hood shut,
welding the door shut,

putting the engine in the back,
making it one piece.

We'll roll that through,
see what happens, Colton.

Colton: Okay, dad.

to be on time,

and I want Hiltz auto co.
To be a company of its word.

Chad: Oh, you want to put the
accent in that car together, do you?

When we decided that we were
just going to use

the front end of the car
and put the motor in the back,

that automatically
lengthened it.

I've never seen a chassis
that big before.

For that long wheel base
on a car.

And that means
a lot of fabrication.

That's got the ends, now.

We have to remember,
this is part of the car body.

The car body has to go down
over top of the chassis.

So what I did
is I laid this on there

and went down straight
and I gave myself clearance.

When that comes up, if the body
ever wants to come off,

we'll do the exact
same thing to the other side.

So we're hoping that the tail
comes to the end

then that means that the fenders

can keep going out here
like we want to.

Jolene: This car is so
extravagant, that just the size of it

and the design
and all the curves.

It's overwhelming not knowing
if we're going to get it done.

And it's a super hard deadline.

We have one week
until the big party.

I want to make sure that's
on the other side of that.

So I'm going to weld that that
this is going to be my guide.

Then I know how long to make
the tail.

Just little tackies,
we don't big ones.

When you put the engine
in the back,

it's got to be long enough
to cover the engine.

their champagne and go...

That's what I want them to do,

and I think that's what we'll...

Chad: I'm just figuring I want
to make some Fender skirts.

We're going to cut it in half.

This is going up here
like this way up here.

We're going to stretch it down
and go like that

and swoop it down
just like this piece.

I want I want to make it
look real nice.

It's the last one man
I want to knock out of the park.

And any car that I think

it's real nice
has finish skirts on it.

And when I keep
that original front end

that it's originally
underneath the body,

when I put the Fender skirts on,
I can just bring them out

a little bit
so the wheels can still move.

So then I'm going to kill
two birds with one stone.

If I run that back
but there somewhere

and I had it out about this far.

And you can use that as your
step, and a Fender skirt.

The fenders on the front
is giving me the French curves,

that I'm thinking about
like a big fendered car

that comes up, you know,
some big movie star would have.

Just going to figure out
how long the curve is.

Because I got to curve,
probably about that long.

So I'm going to open her up
that far.

When you see a round car,
there's a lot more

hands-on work going on.

With the older cars,
they would be harder to make

because there's a lot more
hands-on fabrication.

Nowadays, it's just punched out
and they place it on.

There's a difference.

They've cut out a step to make
it cheaper.

As I'm doing this, that's why
we're getting these roll-y cars

and getting them
all different shapes

because we are doing the work.

Colton, hey, come tack this
on the car for me.

I don't think fancy equipment
would get me anywhere,

I don't need any of that stuff
to build a car.

And if I had it, I don't know
if I'd know how to use it.

I'd have to give me
some instructions.

everything is up to par

on the engine and transmission
on the on the build of this car,

because once that body
goes on top of that thing,

it's going to be hard to get at.

hard time standing up.

His feet are done.

on here,

I know that if I put
the stretcher on it,

I can make it go like that.

curves and lines in this car,

to affect the vision

The stance is narrow.

So when you turn the wheel,
the wheel will not hit

the outside Fender skirt

and that's why I built it out
that far

so I could have a Fender skirt
and turn the wheel.

So it was two birds one stone.
That looks good.

I could look at that for days.
Got some welding there, son.

And you know what,
it's a little bit over the top.

But what the [bleep] I mean,
the whole car, isn't it?

It's kind of got a teardrop
front end,

like a roll after a roll,

it looks like long wavy hair
with a pretty face.

Just making sure the firing
order and stuff is correct.

I got this engine out of a
mini winne.

- Keep going.
- I picked it because it was free

and it's got a nice 360 dodge.

It'll work perfect
with this build.

Chad: Look at that now,
would ya?

We really have to make
sure we start the engine

before we close
in the back of the car.

This car is all one piece,

so we're really going to
have to be careful

because when we put the body on
and we want to fix the engine,

we'll have to take
the body back off.

You can't close something in
and then work on it.

I mean, you say it's almost like
building a cell

and forgetting to jump out
before you weld the last bar in.

Are you going to try
and make this thing fire?

Alex: I can.

[ Engine turns over, starts ]

Yeah, ha ha, hey!

from the front,

from one Fender
to the other Fender.

Then I'm gonna look at it.

I'm trying to think
of what we want to do

with the front of the car.

Would a bumper fix it?

Would a swoopy thing
in the front with exhaust pipe?

Would that fix it?

Can I make a bumper out of what
I'm going to make to fix it?

I like how the side looks
with these rails on here.

I just I'm not happy
with the way the front looks

they're a little bit,
it's not finished.

Not every dream
is just puff magic.

We're going to have to create
and make the dream car.

Like it doesn't...

It just doesn't
fall in your lap every time.

It looks thick and bulky
and that sort of stuff.

But when you come up
to the front,

you've got two big pieces
hanging off the side.

This will be the first car
that I've ever clipped.

every time we show somebody

Fender skirts are out too far.

to make it pleasing to my eye,

Jocelyn at the present moment,

I love the way the side looks.

It looks thick and bulky
and that sort of stuff.

But when you come up
to the front,

you've got two big pieces

As I build this car here,
it's endless

what I can make it look like.

And the car,
will talk to you all the time

it'll tell you exactly
what it wants and what it needs.

I really enjoy
the honesty of a car.

It doesn't have to say a word

and I know exactly
what's wrong with it.

You know, you can take
a look at it. Two eyes.

Yeah, I see you.

What I want to do today
is I want to tie

this piece into the front.
And that's just a matter of me

making making something
come around

and go on the bottom all the way
around and make it a top one

and then facing it,

you know,
it'll be about that wide,

same as a bumper
and bring it that far

and it'll look like a bumper.

The bumper wasn't planned for,

but the car is telling me
what to do.

I'm going to cut that piece,
weld that piece on this piece,

and then I'll put another on top
and weld that.

You know what I'm saying? Like,
I'll make one piece of the top

one piece in the bottom,
then I'll face one piece.

And that'll add make this pair
come to piece the car.

And that'll look
like the bumper.

Then we can put stuff on it
for the bumper.

It's a lot of welding, but...

It is. But it needs a bumper on
the car and do we not?

I know, I know.
We don't got time.

I know time is not of the
essence,

but that's where it's at.

Jolene: It's a lot every time
Chad changes his mind

on this build, it's adding time.

I just hope, Chad sticks to
the plan of keeping it simple.

That's my center.

When I overlap them,
I'll cut them.

Then we'll have the perfect fit.

So when I put one on

and I put another one on,
will overlap them.

And then when I find center,
I'll be able to cut the center

and I have a perfect but
and butt weld them together.

We're going to do
the bottom first.

then we'll have
the perfect center.

When you have two pieces
of metal like this

and you butt weld them together,

so they kind of butt up together

and then you weld them together,
that's called a butt well.

I build these cars by listening
to them and following

and them telling me what to do.

Bottom of the bumper

to bumper is going to satisfy me
on tying front end together.

After we get the bumper on,
it's going to make it look

like that front end
should be like that.

Now we're talking, eh?
I'm feeling a lot better.

And I think that comes out quite
nice on the front like this.

How that tucks up like this
makes it look like the fenders

are supposed to be there.
You know what I mean?

And when you come from this
part, here look.

See how that goes...
Swoops out and then goes,

carries all the way around?

Seizing up, son?

You might as well go right
to the other side if you can.

Most of the fabrication
on the front of the car is done.

We've got the basic shape
of the back of the car.

We just roll down and tack it on
in the inside, in the inside.

So get inside there.
Hickory, dickory, dock.

Now that we know the engine
starts, we can sheath it.

This is what I want.

Where it's tight,
hard to the metal

where it's hard to metal,
I want quick [bleep] welds.

Tangible,
reliable [bleep] welds.

We have made a skeleton.

I want all the metal to be tight
to the skeleton.

Let's get them tight
and weld them up. Tight?

and you have

And when you're building
a boat tail, like we are,

from scratch,
if you don't sheath it right,

you will get big bubbles
that are not going to come out.

I'm tighter on this side
than that side, that's for sure.

That's what I thought, yeah.
And why is that now?

that I've ever clipped.

Alex built the chassis
to fit the car,

but we're going to use
the original front end.

We're going to clip it.

What that means is you're taking
all the front steering mechanism

and all the geometry
and all the brakes.

Means we're going to clip all
that stuff off.

underneath the car.

And then we're going to add it
onto a brand new chassis

that Alex has on the
on the frame table.

Why not keep the front end
that I have, saves us time

from building

When you take two shapes like
that and you cut them apart,

now you have a chance
to angle them.

When you bring them
back together

and you zip cut them in the
middle and weld them back there,

now, you've got a shape
like this and like this.

So I've just manipulate it
with a cut.

You ever see a car
with no grille?

It doesn't
make sense to have a grille.

Why do we want to look in there
when there's nothing in there?

So I took a piece of metal
or whatever this distance is,

and put it through the roller,
so the car would come back.

We'll come back, come back
and back, back, back, back,

back, back, then go whup,

and go right down into the
fenders and this whole piece

would pull out of it,
if you know what I mean.

Down there that part's going to
go up flush,

and then I'm going to
push it in tight,

then I'm going to push it in,
so it pushes

all the metal up tight
and weld it up here.

I'll tell you
what gets overwhelming,

overwhelming is when you know
you've got a little bit of time,

you're tired,
you're mad and disgusted.

You can't be trusted.

And when you go backwards
on something.

I'm Derek Wood and I'm a
cabinetmaker from Senneville

have been doing it now
for 50 years.

I'm a wood worked with wood.

because we don't

and stuff like that.

I'm pretty sure that
Mike Lightfoot and his wife

are going to be over the moon.

They're going to have something
in their winery

that no one else
in the world has.

This is the dream
that we've had for them.

This is the car.

And we wanted to relate it
to their champagne

because that's
what's coming out.

That's the most important
thing, is their champagne.

Jolene:
You know what we can say?

We built them a champagne car
on a beer salary.

Chad: On a what?

It's a champagne car

Yeah, we're we're
we're ready for paint,

but we're nowhere
near ready for reveal.

Every dream is different.

But for the last build,

it would be nice to have
something that's over the top.

We wanted to command the room,
black and red.

The red and the black
it's a timeless color.

The car is timeless, really.

It's just made this week and,

you know, it could have been
in the 1920s

could have been in the 1930s.

It really does make it timeless.

and I still got red paint
on my hands,

it always comes down

After you're done painting,

you touch any panel
is nerve racking.

You do not want to scratch.
You don't want fingerprints.

Deadline's tomorrow.

There's still a lot of work
to do on the car.

Yeah, there's a lot of work

We're all exhausted.

But what really matters
is to get the car done.

Chad: I got this neck tattoo
10 years ago.

I just felt like
as I was building cars,

I wanted more of my cars

to feel like art
than just transportation.

Sometimes people don't look
at cars as art,

but people don't think cars
are all right.

Well, how can I be an artist?

But as we're building the cars

and they're way out there
and way different

and they make people happy
and dream and do funny things,

well, it is art.

Because it's bringing
an expression out of somebody

that generally
wouldn't be there.

And that's what art does.

In a good way
or a bad way doesn't matter,

because all the beauty
in the world

is from the beholder
and the beholder is you.

- You might not get back up.
- I'll come sit down.

Everybody is tired out

- you could sand the wheels.
- I'll do the wheels.

I got to put the windshield,
the floor back in,

and then start doing
the interior.

Taillights shifter.

The team is working technically
around the clock

to get this build done.

I mean, we're no longer
counting the days.

We're counting the hours.
- The gas pedal.

Alright, this is our last day
to work on it,

you know, we've got a lot
of [bleep] to do,

a lot of stuff to make happen
in a very short time.

Whether it's on time or not,
how much money we're spending,

what it looks like...

was meant to be there.

for the right person?

it's the pressures

These sort of are my dreams
that we are giving people,

I look at them,
I, I see what they do

and this is the kind of car

You know, that's sort of what

This is the last build
for Hiltz auto co. Of the year.

There was a little man
in my head saying finish strong.

So for the year
that's what we've done.

I'm hoping that Mike likes it
so much that every time

he brings out a new bottle,
he wants a new car.

and Wolfville for our launch

and release
of our new prestige cuvee,

and we commissioned
a beautiful piece of art,

a rolling piece of art.
We can't wait to see it.

Chad: I just feel anxiety
every time we show somebody

because we want them to like it,
we want to enjoy it.

They've hired us on for a reason

and we just wanted
to please them in the project

that we have built for them.

I'm impressed that we did that
many cars out of this shop.

And it goes to show it's not
the shop that builds the car,

it's the hands.

Gives me goose bumps.
You know, sometimes

that this little place
can provide so many dreams.

And I'd like to provide
a lot more, if I could.

Colton, he's got a good heart,
good work ethic.

And what I have to realize
is that I really enjoy

the moments that I get.

He's his own person and he's
going to learn on his own time.

We have our bad days and know
we have very great days

and you need your bad days
to have your good ones.

As Hiltz auto co. Goes forward,

you wonder if all the hard work
is going to pay off.

And all I can think is,

what else would I be doing?
