What you've done in your life will mean nothing.

Life has a lot to do with cars.

When you're cutting a car in half

and putting it back together, it's really about the integrity

and the honesty of the vehicle itself.

Something without integrity is worthless.

Worthless.

We tried to build seven cars this year.

We're running out of time.

Now we're on the last one and now we got to get it done.

It is crazy because we can see the finish line.

Jolene: Yeah. I mean, there's snow on the ground today.

It's a nice spot from the inside, I'll tell you that.

but it's from a long time ago.

Chad: Me and Mike Lightfoot are about the same age.

We grew up in the same circle.

It's funny to see us come so far.

Mike has come forward and built this beautiful winery

as me and Jolene are coming forward building cars.

Chad: It's a good feeling when two people can come

from such a small community and make such a big impact.

I'm Mike Lightfoot.

You're at Lightfoot & Wolfville vineyards,

and this is a multigenerational family farm

that's transitioned into wine grapes and selling of wine.

So we've got this wine that we've been working on for years.

Jocelyn: Very rare. 790 bottles of this prestige cuvée.

We're going to release it on new year's Eve

and make a real big deal about it.

Wow. So is wine like cars?

The less production, the more it's worth?

You got it.

And we really want to partner on a huge release

that commemorates this particular wine.

But I want you to taste it first.

He's going to get me drunk and negotiate.

[ Laughs ] That's exactly what we'll do.

This place is sick. This is where we store a lot

of our most prestigious wines.

Some of these wines will actually stay in barrels

several years. Okay.

All French oak barrels.

So what happens is there's all the juices

sitting in that barrel. Yes, yes. Yeah.

You have to excuse me my... Yeah.

I don't know [bleep] about grapes.

Yeah. Yeah. That's full of crushed grapes?

It is. Most of the wines that are in the cellar right now

are undergoing some sort of form of fermentation.

So that's why my apple juice tastes funny

when I leave it on the nightstand.

And this is... This is the rare stuff?

So this is the unlabeled because we haven't released it yet.

And I asked Jolene what that was,

and that means she's very up on her wine.

or just sniff it and taste it?

and I'd like to talk to you about maybe commissioning a car.

The timeline here is so tight.

They want it by new year's.

That basically gives us three weeks to get motivated.

Every car we build,

every place we show up is exposure.

As we're in this winery, it tells me who he is,

and when I get my car at his party,

it's gonna let him know who I am.

Chad: The snow, when it comes,

it's telling you that it's coming.

It never usually just bears on and stays.

It just comes and goes.

So when the snow is not here,

that's when we go out and take a look around.

Gary lives up the mountain quite a ways.

He's off the beaten track,

but he's always got cars around everywhere,

he does so.

Yeah, just going to look around and see if I can find something

that I'm inspired with.

We're at the final end of the season for us

because winter's starting to fall.

When winter falls,

you can't see anything when the snow comes down.

I'm always overwhelmed how much stuff that he has

and how much stuff that he's kept.

I'm looking for a certain shape.

It's just like someone going safari-ing

looking for an animal.

There's so many thorns down there and the trees are

so thick, you could barely even walk through it.

What I like about it is the doors on it,

how it swoops back like that.

That thing's cooler than dang it.

It's got that nice swoopy line on the side of it

and I think it's got a cute little face on it.

I can see it there sitting there.

And it's one piece. I like that.

It's a roadster. I like that too.

Not entirely happy with the ass end of it,

how short it is and all that sort of stuff,

but that's something I might change.

I like this one the best of all you got.

They were designed to be repaired by the owner.

We'll be poor by the time we're done.

A lot of the cars that I like are cars

that you don't see a lot of,

and then I can change them even a little bit more.

What would you take for this thing?

Wine makes me think of French curves,

swervy lines, and elegance.

I want to keep it a roadster.

I think that we can make it beautiful.

There's going to be a long tail put on that car.

I'm going to stretch it and make the swerves

and the curves go even longer than they were before.

We're going to put an engine in the back of it.

That's the fun part about it.

and a new beginning and a maybe

and a wish and a kiss in a dream car.

We want to go out with a bang.

That thing's going to be

nothing like they've ever seen before.

It's the last build. I'm proud of everybody,

what we've done so far. Jolene: Mm-hmm.

But we have to make this the biggest

and the baddest of this year.

We only got so much time to do it,

so I just want everybody to get pumped up, if you can.

I know everybody's drug down and wore out

and like you've been drug through a knot hole backwards.

I know that. I feel the exact same way you feel. I really do.

Everybody is tired out.

But the respect that we will get

will succeed all the hard work that we put into it.

Our client on this build is Mike and Jocelyn Lightfoot,

and they're going to throw a party

to release their new champagne they have,

their most expensive.

We have a Austin A40 somerset.

It is a roadster,

and we're going to keep it a roadster.

I really want to make it look elegant,

you know what I'm saying? Keep the engine?

No, no, we don't want to do that, al.

This is where it comes in, buddy.

I want to put the engine in the back.

- Okay. - So as you see, this car,

we're going to cut it off there

and then we're going to make all this back.

And we're gonna put the engine, transmission,

just like in the rear end.

First thing I'm gonna do is I'm gonna run a cross brace

from a piece of square tubing down to the bottom of that,

shoots off that, and then one up top of that,

down to the bottom of that and I'm gonna tack it in the middle.

And then I'm going to relieve all the back of it.

We're going to cut it off. That's what we gonna do!

I want you to stick them on fairly decent.

You can see certain points when people, you know,

grow a little bit.

Colton knows how to use a grinder.

He knows how to use a zip cut.

He knows how to use a reciprocator saw.

He can weld a patch on a car.

He can bust glass or he can take out glass.

He knows how to grind the metal

or to grind the welds how I like it.

You're doing such a fine job, boy,

I might hire you on.

until we have an engine in place,

This car has to be done by the new year.

I don't want to waste any time looking around for engines

when I got engines in the dooryard.

And I want Hiltz auto co. To be a company of its word.

We'll always have integrity if we keep that in check.

It's clean and this one's easy to make mounts for,

I think... I had demands for it somewhere.

It seems like it's something that Colton might be able to do.

the tuner style cars.

And, like, this isn't something that your dad

would be excited to take on because he likes the old cars

and he's not into the electronics...

I don't know. I think it's a big opportunity

for you to... Step up in the shop.

It's kind of a big opportunity for the shop in general

to branch out into the newer cars.

Chad: While they pull the engine,

I'm going to cut out the firewall on the floor.

They're rusted, so I'm not going to use them.

As I cut this car,

there's a word that comes to my mind.

It's called integrity.

If I take all the integrity out of the car

and do not put it back, it's worthless.

So as I cut the integrity out of this car,

I have to put it back to make it a car.

And I'm going to do that by making braces

out of square tubing.

I want to throw just a little bit more welds on the corners

to give it some of its integrity back.

Motor's out, firewall's out,

floor's out, body's off.

We've got a long way to go.

Colton: We're at Poehl's auto recycling today,

and I'm on the hunt for a car,

something that hits my budget,

something that's cool and something that will fit

in a generation of a kid my age that he would enjoy.

I'm on the hunt for a vehicle here.

We have probably about 365 cars on the yard.

Colton: This ain't a spot that my old man

would come and pick for a car, where, you know,

he would go to somewhere a little older

and try to find something older.

Dad likes playing with old things.

And for me, this is... I like tuners and stuff,

and this is a good spot to start looking.

So either side of these here,

there's some civics farther down the farther in there.

Okay. And more of the fords and stuff.

I'm on the hunt for something that's loud, not muscly.

I don't get tons of money for it... about $8,000,

I would say, for the whole, entire build.

Yeah, they're quite the vehicle.

You got all the headlights

and all the shebangs for this guy,

or is there stuff I got to go find?

Um... everything should be there.

A crack there. I have to get him a new bumper.

The lancer is perfect because everything is there.

A could buy an evo kit for it and make it look sporty,

more aerodynamic.

Exhaust, lower it, cold air intake...

You know, just the basics. Make it that much cooler.

Now, the real question, what are you thinking for it?

Well, I'd be into that 3 grand range maybe.

The engine's six feet with the transmission?

Five and a half, so rear end starts here.

And then you want to do that tail going to a point.

This car is... it seems like it's going to be really, really,

really, really long.

It's nerve-racking because this is a small budget

and it's a really big car, so it's a lot of work.

You know, I don't know why Chad does this sometimes,

because we could do a really small car.

Yeah, it all takes money and it takes time.

We're going to weld that right there.

We'll find our distance on that thing right there.

29 inches? We're gonna weld that

frame rail there, then we're gonna stick

that engine in it. Mm-hmm.

And then we'll build the rear end on after.

Alex: With this chassis, we're using

the front suspension and stuff,

so we have to get the width of the front suspension

and then build the frame to that back

so it's not too wide or too narrow.

The plan is today is to have the engine and transmission

locked down between these two frame rails.

Alex and Colton are working on the frame,

and I'm going to start making the shape of the cab.

If this is a roadster, I really want to feel

like the door is part of the car

when it closes there.

I'm gonna take and cut them doors down.

I'm going to actually weld them doors shut first.

I'm sitting on the floor of the car pretty well.

Arm here.

But as I'm sitting here, I have to think,

so this is the floor by my feet.

There's... at least have that much room.

I got this at my back, so, you know...

When you're sitting in the car, it would be nice to,

you know, have your arm down instead of cocked up.

I'm gonna put a piece of exhaust pipe

across here and around the back.

This is just the beginning. You know, we're just

at the beginning stages, so if I feel overwhelmed now,

I would probably not get the job done.

I carry these elbows 'cause for as I like the shape.

I can't bend them, haven't got the machine to bend them,

but you can buy them through speedway fairly cheap,

and I use them all the time.

I think we've used them almost on every build.

That shape is hard to get and they're very strong.

I'm going to cut that there

and then I'll have two of the exact same pieces

and I'll use one for that side and one for that side.

Weld that on there like that.

She's a smoking gun right there. Look at that, baby, smoking gun.

That went quick.

The time we have on this car,

I have to use it perfectly to get it done.

If I do not put the car on the block at the time

that they wanted, my integrity is shot already.

As this is going on,

we've got a chassis squared up.

We got our first cross member put in.

We got it tacked in the back. We've got the engine.

The doors were being welded shut.

The shape of the Fender coming down the door is nice.

You know, as I cut it down and make it low as I can

is what I'm trying to do is make as low as I can

so that it looks nice on the same line pattern.

I just want to see where the body lies

on the car with the motor, and I want to... I want...

I want... I want... I want... I want... I want to look at it.

It's been colder weather, ice and stuff,

but we don't have a rear end,

we can't get this build done, so...

Alex: Got a lot crap vehicles up here,

a lot different makes models.

We are putting a 360 in front of this thing,

so we want a nice, wide rear end for this.

That's crown Vic there.

They're about 70 inches,

which we want a wide, wide stance in the rear.

Yeah, I'd say.

This rear end's quite hefty.

Chad: I'm putting the firewall in now.

I don't have to worry about anything

because the motor is not there.

I can go straight to the bottom.

I don't have to worry about

the transmission, the tunnel, nothing.

There's nothing there other than... Empty space.

If you're driving this car, you're out having a good time.

You've got your best clothes on, you got your best shoes on,

and you're gonna get in this thing

and you're gonna drive from point "a" to point "b,"

have your plate of supper

and tell your wife that you love her.

And as you drive along the road, you'll have people telling you

how beautiful you of a car you have.

"Never seen one before in my life.

May I ask, where did that come from?"

And as they get compliments, they'll pass it on,

and then we'll have more work for next year.

I've got this thing almost welded.

I got one more piece in the bar weld done,

then I'm going on to the front end.

Oh, yeah.

Colton: This is my first thing

I've ever took on by myself in the shop,

and I'm representing.

It's my family name and my dad's business,

and I want to please everybody

and show dad that I can do it right.

It's my day off. I'm working with dad,

so I'm going to put some work in and get the build done.

If I say I'm gonna finish, I'm gonna keep my word.

I want to get that looking like a car again.

I'll start putting the headlights back in,

play with those new bumpers,

and then I can step back and have fun with it.

I like that.

Pressure's on.

I've never took on anything completely alone.

I have never put a body kit on before, ever.

I mean, I've took the bumper off my car and put it back on.

When I think of a tuner car, it's a car you can modify,

a car that would look cool going down the road modified.

[ Engines revving ]

Something that'll spin you around in circles and drift,

and they scream like cats.

You want something fun and cool

and something you can take care of and afford.

Whoo!

It's exhaust time.

The original exhaust on it, it's not bad shape.

I mean, it works,

but with the new bumper I ordered,

I'll just put an end on it,

make it look nice, and, you know,

and make it maybe sound a little deeper with the intake

and look a lot nicer with that nice tip out there,

you know, with the backs instead of an old rusted-off tip.

I'm gonna cut the old muffler off.

Oh, geez, I might not even...

[bleep]

I hacked it all off,

I got everything in line to do the muffler,

but, you know, a lot easier said than done.

I might go ask al for an opinion.

You know, there's a time frame, and Al's two steps away.

So I might as well go ask

before I make some hack job under there, you know?

The exhaust pipe would have to go through this flange

to support that doming gasket.

You're gonna have to find

a piece of exhaust pipe that goes inside this.

Colton is on the right track to fix this exhaust,

but the piece of pipe that he's using is not the right size.

I think at this point, Colton is better off

to cut the old exhaust pipe off.

Colton: For al, he's done it three million times.

I've never done it once, so for his opinion to come in

and say, "hey, do it this way," is the world.

So I'm happy for his help.

Quite a small place for a big guy.

Should be good all way around there.

So now the exhaust is finally welded on and together.

I want to see if it works.

[ Engine starts ]

I feel fantastic with the way it looks.

Al had to step in and help me, but it's not shaming me at all.

I mean, I still got the rest of it done.

Hood's on, bumpers are on, side skirts are on, exhaust is on.

It's not much, but it is for me, you know?

Jolene: This build... It's a super hard deadline,

and it's overwhelming

not knowing how we're gonna do it.

Colton: I've been working on the lancer,

and it looks great.

[ Laughs ] That's wicked.

So I haven't seen the car yet, but I'm super excited to see it.

Chad: I've got the cabin in shape that I want.

I've got the doors coming the way I want.

I got the back rail the shape I want.

Alex has got the engine in place,

got the transmission in place with all mounts mounted in now.

Right now, he's fabricating the rear end

and making the kick up for the suspension.

As he does that, he gets all that done,

get going on that,

I'm going to get Colton to get the front end tacked on

and then get everything looking the way we want to get it.

This is a big moment for this car right now.

I'll tell you why... because the front end's going on.

To make this car on time, on budget,

I am making a one-piece car.

It's good.

Everything is gonna be smooth, clean, and painted.

We're gonna make it look like a dream car.

As we put the fenders up on the side of this car

and start adding them on,

you will see where I'm going with it.

I want to tack this on

and try to get me every two inches away.

because it'll burn through on you.

First time he's ever welded the hood shut.

I'm gonna smooth it off, and it's gonna look amazing.

Ever see anybody weld the hood shut on their car before?

Jolene: This car is so extravagant,

just the size of it and the design and all the curves,

it sort of feels like we're building this car from scratch.

We've taken on huge builds.

We're kind of overcomplicating it with the whole design,

reengineering the engine in the back.

It's overwhelming not knowing if we're gonna get it done

and how we're gonna do it.

You know, with a pinto, there's a lot of design.

There's a lot of fabricating and...

[Bleep] Wow.

What are we doing?

Am I gonna be able to fabricate fast enough?

Jolene: We missed a deadline.

Chad: Have I done all this work for nothing?

Jolene: With this build, it's a super hard deadline,

and we have one week until the big party.

Every time we take on a build and set a deadline,

that's our word and that's our reputation

and we have to... We have to stick to it.

It's going to give us integrity as a shop,

and that's what will be known for.

Oh, you want to put the ass end of that car together, do you? Look at him.

Chad: It's stressing me out there a little bit

because it's a long [bleep] car.

Jolene: Every decision that he makes

takes time and it takes money.

Chad: I'm trying to think of what we want to do

with the front of the car.

I don't know what I want to do.

Everybody is tired out.

Jolene: We're no longer counting the days.

We're counting the hours.
