sixth build of the season

Soon we're gonna have snow
on the ground,

all the time we're gonna have

work twice as hard to do
anything.

And we want to finish, you know,
we want to meet the goal

that we put down.

what exactly he wants to build.

So we have a v12
Pierce-arrow engine,

and the way it rides would
take you right back to 1930.

And we'll cover the engine
and it's quite big.

I got a louver machine

that'll punch a bunch
of holes in it

and that will release
all the hot air.

And then I'm going
to come down here

and I'm going to open the front
so the air can go in.

a hot rod and having fun.

We're going to make it
a one seater person race car,

I would like to be

almost sitting right
on the transmission,

like to have the shifter
right there.

Anyways, I want the shifter
right here between my legs.

I've got this shape
and it's got this big, you know,

sideways teardrop in the back.

And then it has the cockpit
and then it has your hood

and you're opening
for your grille.

I want to keep it true to the
year if we can like

everything that we put on it
is I want it to be antique-y

or old or have depth to it
or we make it.

If they can make it back then,
we can make it now.

As we get building in this car.

I want you to think
about the history

and the and the people

that probably
would have built this car.

And the tools
that they had back then.

I get a couple of old tools
out there.

Maybe I can get you get
that engine running

with the with a bent nail
and a rubber band.

We're going to pick a lot
of stuff in the back door yard.

We've got to check
on chassis out there.

We can pick from.

We've got some body parts
that we can pick from.

Also when we start it up,

if the engine even runs.

Right out of the gate,
I see I'm missing

a whole bunch
of transmission pieces.

You know, the clutch pieces.

Probably going to be hard
to get parts for.

When I get this thing
tore apart,

I hope nothing else is missing
out of it

because, you know,

where are you going to find
something like that?

Got a lot of work.

I don't know if I can

if I can get this thing running.

Chad: If you can get fire to it
and spark to it, it will run.

And I have faith in Alex
he can do it.

And so you can do it.

I relate to people
that built cars years ago

because I use the exact
same methods that they do,

I use the materials that I have,

I use things that probably
are unorthodox,

but yet, it gets the job done.

That would have cut my toe off.

something for Chris to make him feel like

we were building the fastest car
that was ever at that time.

This is my piece. I'm going
to put in the back here.

that together.

Now, the frame's
the right width.

This is where I'm sitting

Jolene: We're all in turbo mode
right now with this build.

We're trying to get it done
as quick as possible

so we have enough time
for the final build.

Chad: Alex Gould,
he's a mechanical genius.

It's just like the scientists
playing with Frankenstein

and I have to rely on him
to do what he has to do

so I can get done
when I have to get done

so we can marry
these things together.

Alex: Right now, I'm just
checking valve operation,

make sure the exhaust
and intake valves open

and watching the valves
come off and go down.

That one's stuck,
that one's stuck.

These engine valves are stuck.
Chad?

- Yes.
- There's only a compression

on two of the 12 cylinders.

If the engine does not start.

I will have to build
a whole other car.

I mean, in my brain,
you know what I mean?

Alex: First I'm gonna try
to lubricate these valves,

I'm hoping a little bit
of lubrication goes a long way.

And see what I can do
to free 'em up.

That didn't work,
so I'm gonna try and clean 'em

to free 'em up
to get 'em to work.

This one just barely turns.
These are stuck.

This is gasoline.

Gonna wash them off
and clean them up.

Chad has a lot of faith in me
to get this engine running.

I think a little too much faith.

I need that for compression.

Everything is moving
nice and free now.

Now that the valve's free,
hopefully the energy will start.

It's time to fire this thing up.

and try to jam it down
over top of this thing.

We're not going to get it down
over that, you know that?

Gonna have to lift her up.

This is going to be rough
if you build the body first.

The engine is so heavy
that we're not going to be able

to get the engine in the body,
after we build the car.

So, engine first, body later.

I know we're doing
this backwards,

but that there will not pick
that engine up,

that's 1,500 pounds

and that would probably fold
that cherry picker.

Oh, by the way, we let that
down slowly

and you watch your side, Alex,

and see if we're going
to touch anything or not.

It's close. Oh, she's on there,
that's for sure.

but we still need the parts
for the transmission.

I'm trying to find a clutch and
pressure plate for our build.

The clutch and pressure plate,
that's what

connects the engine
to the transmission.

I've known Mark
for quite a while.

I gave him a call.

He told me to come out, search
around, see what I could find.

He has a lot of old engines,
transmissions.

Some of the stuff
he has is bigger gear.

So I'm hoping that he has
something

that fits this, this build.

Well, look at this one here.
Where'd this come from?

This pressure plate itself
is 16 inches.

So that one isn't going to work,
because we need

something that's 14 inches.

The transmission being so big,
I might get lucky

and there might be something
in one of these trucks.

Well, here's an old fire truck.

Ah, she's got a big old
diesel in it.

If it had the original engine,
that might have worked for me.

What do we got here? Oh, god.

Ah, so small.

No harm in looking.

The problem I'm coming across.

Is that a normal like vehicle,
small truck.

The clutches and pressure plates
are too small.

Coming and finding the semis,
the clutches of pressure plates.

Flywheels are too big.

Damn it.

This engine's rare
and it has its own unique size.

That is making it hard
to find parts.

Son of a bitch.

The countdown is on and
the situation's getting tough.

I got to find
a clutch pressure plate,

and here ain't gonna work.

I might have to do some digging

and hopefully someone has
got parts for this transmission.

Chad: We got one week to go.

We're halfway through the build,

we have not got
the pressure plate, clutch.

We haven't got that stuff
to put the transmission on.

And if we do not get that,

we've actually failed.

I'd like to take this... Off
all on the inside the chassis,

like right on the edge.

Then I would like to take
this square tubing

and go up straight.

And then I would like
to scissor truss it.

We want to make
that frame stronger than strong.

So we decided to put scissor
trusses on the side of it

so that chassis can't bend.

When I was in school,

we'd always make a bridge
out a Popsicle sticks.

We used scissor trusses to make
it strong,

so it don't go like this.

Let's make it strong
as possible.

We've got a big engine in there.

I'm third generation. My
grandfather run a salvage yard

back in the '40s and '50s.

I'm building the back of the end
of a race car right now,

I got the front of it
sort of mocked up.

But I'm looking for
some body pieces for the back.

This would be probably the only
place that I could randomly see

a bunch of older cars
lined up with hoods on them.

Most of the hoods
and doors and trunks

are all up here in the bushes.

- It's all pretty cool, here.

They're all off
and everything got a hood there.

Got a hood underneath of it,
that one's on.

I'm going to keep
an eye on that one.

I like this point thing
going on, you know.

I mean, we want to go fast.

So in the back, I've seen
a lot of racer... race cars.

They come to a point
which looks cool.

But as I look at it,
it's too wide for our car.

You know what I mean, we've made
our car narrow, right?

So it's too wide to put them
this way and come back to point.

So what I'm thinking is
if I can get two of them

and put them up on their side,

it'll come up like a canopy
and it'll be narrow.

It's pretty good shape.

Got two of the...

What would you want
for the two hood

for that hood,
that hood over there,

and that hood that goes to that?

The hoods we usually get like
$150, $200 apiece for 'em

if they're good, right?

So if I give you 100 bucks
you'll give me that,

and another hundred bucks
for the hoods?

We just do it all by hand
and press them out with that.

This is coil Springs off a hood.

I had a guy named Errol Maister

he welded the thing all together
and pretty well put it together.

It was a big whopping
200 dollars.

It doesn't really
punch the hole.

We have to cut the hole and then
and then we form it.

It's just a mold, really.
But it does do the job.

It does exactly
what I need it to do.

It's been a good tool, I've done
many hoods with it.

It's, I think,
a real work of art.

or fake to it.

It's just as real as it can be.

really attractive.

for 20 years

and this man tore it apart.

that engine will still be
