take a jump.

When I got here
and I built the shop,

I visualized that property
being cleaned,

and a bunch of antique cars
on it,

and a lot of happy people.

And that became
rockabilly weekend.

I'm able to build the cars
that I feel and I see

and bring them to life.

All the dreams
that I've ever had,

they're starting to come true.

10 years of my life,
I've been mowing that back lawn,

thinking about other people,
how I'm going to get them here.

Every year we build a car
to raffle off.

This year,
where it's Hiltz auto co.,

I want it to be
the best one yet.

[ Engine starts and revs ]

Wow.

Rockabilly weekend
is a car show,

something that I've been doing
for 10 years now.

It's the anniversary year.

I've made it into something.

I want to keep making it
into something.

So I want it bigger and better
than last year, that's for sure.

There'll be people coming
from all over the world.

It's a good time, and there's
a lot of happy faces.

[ Engine revving ]

[ Laughs ]

Every year of
rockabilly weekend,

we always raffle off a car.

We're going to be
selling tickets

for $25 apiece,
so we have to build something

that people are going to
want to buy tickets on.

It's the first year
that we're building

a giveaway car
under Hiltz auto co.,

so, you know, we really have
to build something over the top.

It brings more people.
Let's face it,

you have a chance
to roll out of this place

with a hot rod.

What would you want

We heard through the grapevine
that a farmer down the road

had a car that he might be
able to donate.

This car is in really
poor condition.

It's completely rusted
at the bottom, there's no floor.

You know what? I kind of like
it the way it is

because there's no floor in it.

We get to start... we don't have
to cut anything out.

we just have to go, right?

I mean, it's literally rough.

Yeah, I know it's rusty
and all that stuff,

any fenders on it.

We're also going to
take away the roof.

We're going to put a v-8 in it

with headers coming
down the side.

We're going to
lower the chassis.

Hopefully, we can make
this car nice and low.

That's what we're going to make,

and I'm excited and nervous

and all that same thing
at the same time.

Aaron's not with us on this one.

We're going to have
to dig down deep

because that's a man down...

A man and a half, actually.

Man and a half down.

That means we're going to have

to work as a team
tighter than ever.

Aaron's out sick.

Not going to discuss
anything further than that.

You know, I'd like to keep
his privacy.

But here at Hiltz auto co.,
we have to keep moving.

It's going to be a big challenge
to finish the cars on time

a man down.
We'll have to communicate.

Yeah, it'll have to be
pure symphony.

I mean, we'll all have
to be, like,

played out just right
to make it happen.

Alex: All come together.

Yeah, it has to be that way.

We got a '38 Ford.

We're not going
to use the fenders.

We're not going to use the hood.

We're going to make
an open motor roadster.

The bottom of it's rusty.

It's got no floor in it,
so what we're going to do

is make our own floor
and our own sills.

And as we section it,
we're going to have to leave

a little room for a channel
down over the chassis,

because I want to make this car
as low as possible.

This build is strictly
Chad's vision.

You know, there's no client
attached to it.

You can tell he's got the spark
with this build.

You know, he's putting his taste
and his style into it.

We're going to chop it,

and we're going to channel it.

to take pieces

and parts from other cars
to build a hot rod.

To build something
from anything.

The first couple steps is where
this body's so out of shape,

we want to connect it together.

Once we weld the doors shut,
we can do anything

and get it squared up,
then we can do anything to it

because it's squared
and it's welded together.

[ Crackling ]

As I'm looking at it,
the car talks to you

and tells you exactly
what you need to do with it.

Now that the doors
are welded shut,

I'm kind of liking
the way it looks.

As we're putting it
together and tacking it

and getting it tight together,

I'm seeing just
a one-piece body.

What are you thinking, Jolene?

I think it would be cooler
to be able to hop in it.

It's like a cool factor.

The builds are never
a straight line.

There's always... we're always
changing direction,

and Chad changes

something pretty out of it.

because this is welded together.

So what's going on?
We're going to cut

the bottom of the car off.

Well, we don't want to fix that.

You know how long it'll
take to fix all that?

Fix the bottom of the sill,
fix the bottom of the door,

fix the front?

The car's telling me what it
wants to be done, you know?

It's kind of telling me
where to customize it

because of where
all the rust is.

Shing! Cut it off!

Before we cut off the bottom,

we're going to reinforce it all
with square tubing

so nothing takes off.

And then we're going to line
the top of the cabin

with exhaust pipe.

Once I weld that to there,
it adds another body line.

Also... also, it gives me
more height

from what I cut off the bottom.

You know what I mean?
Whatever I cut off the bottom

I've added to the top.

When you don't have things
to bend that for you,

you just make up things
to do it yourself, you know?

Actually, I've had
older gentlemen tell me,

like, "you're doing exactly
what I did when I was a kid,"

you know?
They didn't have anything,

so they became resourceful.

- They need more bend, don't it?
- Yeah.

Sometimes it hurts because when
you bang it on the ground,

sometimes it'll rattle you
right through,

but just keep going
because you need it bent.

these wheel Wells.

And then give it a couple Jacks

and then roll the metal through,

and it'll roll all the way out.

The reason I like the chassis,
it still has a straight axle.

Well, when you want
the motor open, you don't want

that ugly front end
up there with the control arms

and the lower control arms
and your coil Springs.

That's not the front end
that hot rodders

think of when they think
of hot rodding.

So as I look at it,
it really looks nice

and build a car

Now that we've changed it

and lifted the body up
because it looks better,

now we have to make wheel Wells,
if you know what I'm saying.

Dad's going to give me
the opportunity

to build these wheel Wells
up for him.

This is the first time
I'm taking on a fabrication part

by myself where, you know,
bending metal and rolling metal

and wheeling metal
comes into play.

And I want to make sure
I do a decent job.

I want to do a perfect job.

Chad: Aaron's gone, and he does
a lot of fabrication,

making pieces and panels
and stuff like that.

Colton is going to have to

Patterns take practice,

and practice makes perfect.

Here's a little... gonna use
a little trick I remember.

Another way of pattern making

The old man showed me one day.

So I got to make
a six-inch piece

to go all the way around here,
right?

So my piece I'm going
to make the same size

as this piece of tape.

Instead of just measuring,

then when I got to bend
the metal,

I'm going to get
some taken away from me,

I'm just going to run a piece
of tape right around the top

that would take
the place of the metal.

And that right there is how long
my six-inch piece has to be.

Did you do that on that boy?

I'd make it a little bit longer,
just in case.

that's truly into hot rods,

Having no money
makes you creative.

And when you collect stuff
like this, it makes you creative

because you have collected it
and you want to use it.

And that's where
customizing comes from,

is using what you have.

Wanted to step it up this year,
10th annual rockabilly car show.

So I'm really going to make
this car

look like it's worth 50 grand.

I knew I was going to paint it
two different colors.

That means you got
to paint it twice.

First, we put our base color on,
our candy color.

And then we put our clear coat
on with Pearl and glass.

Years ago, they would throw
glass in their paint jobs

to get that glitter,
that metallic-y look.

♪♪

You look in there, you can see,
like, it's sparkling,

like how glass will sparkle.

That little... whatever's
small enough will go down

through the filter
and into the gun.

The clear coat
gives it the shine.

Can't say there's not glass
in there because there is.

We busted glass in it,
put a little in the paint.

It's almost like busting
the wine glass over the boat.

There you go, set sail.

[ Whirs, hissing ]

We're 12 hours away
from the first car

rolling in here
for rockabilly weekend,

and we're still not done
with the giveaway car.
