we have a car show

called rockabilly weekend.

It's when our car community
comes together and celebrates

and has fun for the weekend.

We always raffle off a car.

Last year, doug redden
bought $500

worth of tickets
hoping to win.

We just took a look there

and it's going pretty good,

but doug's got me half nervous
in the same hand

because I don't know
what he got.

with whatever I want.

It's exciting to me because
I know what I can do to it

and I know what it's going
to look like in the end.

Doug could have
just about anything.

The unknown, it kind of
makes me nervous a little bit.

It's a good looking car.

It is in very good shape,
but I'm not a car kind of guy.

It's a little tougher.
We're taking a car

and making it into like a --

like, he has big rigs here,

I keep thinking big rigs.

Maybe I should think
small truck, you know.

And there's lots to work with.
It's a nice solid car.

It is a nice old car.

But it's not a truck.
It isn't. That's for sure.

-What year is this thing?

How's it been?
I love it. It's a gm.

Something's bugging me about it.
Maybe it's bugging me

because I'm not
sure of what I want to do.

Do I dual-wheel it
in the back?

Do I put big stacks
in the bunk in the back

and make it a big rig?
I don't know.

It's going to be unique.

I was kind of figuring
that a little bit.

She got a gm stamp
on her.

Chad: The car was in
not good shape.

I was expecting it to be
complete underneath the hood.

It has no spark plugs
in the holes,

and they are open
to the weather,

and I'm thinking, that's
probably not a good thing.

We're looking at an engine
replacement, you know,

so it's a lot more work.

What kind of money you think
you want to spend?

If you want to make this
into a truck

the way -- you know, the way
I want to do it, I guess,

and I guess that's why
you're coming to me...

Exactly.
...The way I want to do it.

You'd be you'd be 25,
probably.

And that's including
that you give me the car.

Jolene: Doug's a big fan,
so it's great

that he's come to us,
he's got a car.

He trusts that chad's able
to turn it into a truck.

You know, I think he's come
to the right place.

in chad we trust.

Doug: Perfect.

Chad: He's given us the vehicle
that he wants done.

That changes the ball game,
doesn't it?

But there's an opportunity
there, is there not,

to make something
that I'd never dreamt of.

[ thunder rumbles ]

chad: I need to think about
how I'm going to do this.

I've never done this before,

so I'm going to take a minute
and think about it.

Doug has given us
a 1934 oldsmobile.

It's a very nice looking car,
and it's a four-door.

I've decided since doug
has a hauling company,

I'm going to build him
a dump truck.

So what we're going to
have to do is make a cab.

We'll remove all the back.

The look for the dump truck
is kind of toyish.

When I was a kid, that was fun
to go to town to get a toy

to play with in the ditch
and dig holes.

We're going to move it forward

and then we're going to
reconnect.

In my brain,
when we're building this,

it tells me
that it's going to be fun.

We could almost make
a wheel barrel effect.

It's pretty cool.
It's kind of a dump truck

like you would never see,
but you think would exist.

We're going to try to make it
round where we can.

We'll try to make it look
like you could push it.

You could touch it
and play with it.

I like it.

This is the car that
we're starting with, obviously.

'34 oldsmobile.

We're doing this for
doug redden.

He's into hauling sand
and gravel and that stuff.

We want to make him
a dump truck.

But the first thing we got to do
is make it a cab,

and we'll cut the bum off it

because we can make that
the back of the cab.

We can make a box for it.

What I would do is make this
all out of the exhaust pipe.

Exhaust pipe up like this
and exhaust pipe --

you know what I mean?
That's how we'd do that.

We know how to bend
exhaust pipe.

[ slams ]
right?

Colton: It sounds pretty crazy
that we're talking about

making a dump truck
out of '30s oldsmobile,

but when I sit down
and listen to dad's ideas,

there's not much
that he can tell me anymore

that I don't believe he can do.

Is the thing going to actually
tilt up and down?

Yeah, for sure. Yeah, we'll just
put it on a pedestal there

or a thing where it can pivot.

How heavy is that dump box
going to be?

That's a lot of weight,

especially if
he's actually going to use it.

Remember that toy
had the thing?

-That would be cool.
-That's a great idea.

It had a little arm here,

and then you had
a little wheel here, right?

Would you make it so you
could turn it and --

that'd be a lot of work,
wouldn't it?

Oh, yeah.
- [ laughter ]

that would make it more look
like a toy, would it not?

I collect antique toys,
and I like the way they look.

-I think you got that.
-Yeah.

I think it would be a nice --
it would be a nice toy.

We got a car into a truck
and then into a dump truck.

You know, we got to have
a good size engine,

make sure it's safe and strong.

I mean, I think it's definitely
an ambitious built,

but who else is doing stuff
like this?

Jolene: At hiltz auto co.,
we want to be a brand

that creates
one-of-a-kind cars.

In time, we'd like to be
a household name.

When they think of us, then
they'd think of the crazy cars

that we put out every year.

Let's put put the plan
in action.

-Well, it's rock and roll time.

the very first thing we do
is strip it down

and see what we got.

[ whirring ]

colton: When I started working
here last year,

I did not know
anything about cars.

Every day I pull in
the driveway,

I have to prove myself here.

What bolts are these for?
Front bumper, back bumper?

I don't know.

How in the [bleep] can you
not know that?

Colton: First build, there were
a lot of ups and downs,

and I got it in my dad's trust
back as much as I can.

Chad:
- Ooh, get the fender off.

Look at that thing
now, would you?

Starting to get her clothes off,
see what she looks like.

Sometimes that's good
and sometimes that's bad.

Taking this molding off
around the top of the roof here,

and then I'll remove
the wooden structure underneath.

As we all know,
you can't weld to wood.

aaron's right at home.

He's got wood pliers
and everything.

This car is held together
with little nails like that.

They're kind of a nuisance.

There's probably 5,000
of them in this car.

They're sharp.

Chad: As you deconstruct
older cars,

you realize more and more
where they've came from.

We went from the wheel
to the wheelbarrow

to the wagon to the car.

So on these cars,
you have to dig the wood out.

-How's that?
-It's pretty good.

Chad: The first thing
we're going to do

is we're going to make this car
into a cab for a truck.

We're gonna cut it in half
and mary the back on.

So I'm thinking that we go right
with that window

right straight across.

We're going to cut it off there.
Number one rule

in cutting a car
in half --

make sure it doesn't
go wonky on you.

[ laughs ]

[ clattering ]

that would be...
Somewhat like that.

[ chuckles ]
we've got that sucker

way, way, way too long.

Well...

Biggest complaint
with old trucks...

-It's too small.
-Cab's too small.

You know what? It would look
pretty damn sick --

pretty cool
with a cab that long,

if you know what I mean.
Like, it would look like --

close that in, but just leave
the cab bigger like that.

Yeah.

I think that it would
really look cool.

the cab is, or...

Actually, that looks actually
good there, does it not?

You would never think
it was a car,

just the way we built
the cab of the truck.

It looks like it would be
a dump truck as a cab,

just a little bit bigger.

We're just doing it our way,
which is the hiltz auto co. Way.

I like both corners on it.
Both corners look good.

It's raised in the middle
like, I mean --

yeah, I like it. I love it.

you guys went hunting
for bicycles?

I think he's going
to be surprised.

I think doug will piss himself.
Ha ha!

let's make our boxes big.

4 feet should be
the bottom.

We're turning a 1930s oldsmobile
into a dump truck.

This is our chance to show here
at hiltz auto co.

We can build anything.

So we need to decide
how much of an angle we want.

So if we make a box, a square
box here, we have to decide...

Now that I got the cab
in proportion where I want it,

now it's was time to make
the dump body, you know?

What we should do
is weld something on here

and then we can weld
our square box here

out of our exhaust pipe.

We'll take exhaust pipe
and we'll put it

on the corner of that square

and we'll run it up
to the corner

so we get all the angles
are the same thing,

so same 10 feet long?

I'm thinking we'll make
a box this big.

-Yeah.
-That'd be quite an angle,

say that's 4 feet
from there up to that corner.

Would be quite an angle,
would it not?

Yeah, it'd be 30,
almost 40 degrees.

Good old [bleep] aaron
pulling out the degrees.

[ laughs ]

[ whirring ]
the base of the dump body

is going to be 4 feet long,

and we're going to basically
taper it out on both ends.

Then we heard welding
outside in the wind.

That's why they call you al.

-Super al.
-[ laughs ]

chad: I want to make the dump
out of exhaust pipe

because I want that nice
round edge finish.

Flat as a pancake.

I do not want something square
and awkward looking.

I want it to look like a toy.

That's going to be
the bottom of it, obviously.

But I'm thinking I'd like
to have that hoist

just go out far enough
that you can go up

to the back of the truck
and sit down on that.

That's a two-bum seater.

-Okay, yeah.
-You know what I mean?

You could put water in that,
have a --

have a hot tub.
Oh, my god.

Ow! Getting in the hot tub.

there's no sense
getting your panties

all tied up in a knot

if you don't even know
where you're going, so...

There's so many things
going on, right,

we want to know if we're even
in proportion or not.

Yeah, let's slowly
keep coming ahead.

Um, I've got --
that's cool.

The things we come up with,
I'm telling you.

I'm liking it.

I'm glad we put it together.

-Let's make a cab corner.
-Okay, cool.

This is where
it gets tricky for me

because for me,
- like, I see what's going on,

but I wouldn't know where to
bring this,

because I don't know

what this is supposed
to look like in its day.

Well, let's stand back and take
a look at it for a second.

Come look.
Come look at it with me.

What if you made it too big
and it interfered with the box?

Chad: The biggest challenge
for the cab corners --

when you're running cab corners,
it's just not a round bend.

It's rounder at the corner,
then wider at the top.

Pretty hard to make a smaller
bend at the bottom

than it is at the top.

So there's a lot to figure out.
Well, that piece there,

it has to continue all the way
around the back of the truck.

So we're going to
have to roll it.

We'll roll it,

then we'll put
the bend in it,

and then we'll shrink it

so it goes to shape,
if you know what I mean.

We'll put the shrinker on
this thing here and shrink it.

So we'll see.
I'll show you.

this is our patient today.

His name is metal.

Colton wanted to be
on the right foot

when we first started off,
but he just had too many things

going in his brain,
you know?

He was racing around
everywhere.

We had a little issue with that,
but it's just --

yeah, he's my son.
I love him,

and I want to make sure
that he gets over that hurdle.

Nice little roll.
You know what I mean?

We start rolling up too much
and we don't want her too much,

we'll roll that down.
Just a second.

Bring it back out.
[bleep]

that looks good enough
for me though. What?

It's not bad at all.

It's okay to roll something
too far sometimes,

but it's not okay to bend
something too far sometimes.

You know what I mean?
Like, to break the edge.

When you're here, you have to
use your brain and your hands.

You're learning.
You have to pay attention

to all pieces.

This shape is going
this way, right?

That's going that way.
But look at this shape.

Is it bent in half?
Is it up too far?

Is it crooked?

How do you get that?

You got to take it
in the shrinker,

get a little heat on there,

pry on that,
pull it together.

Everything matters.
Everything matters.

So if you think of everything,
you should be good.

See the teeth,
how they're apart?

See that little gap there?
Mm-hmm.

That means we're going
to bring it together.

If there's no gap there,
then when you push down,

it pulls it apart.

So we know we're
on shrinker.

I guess so.

[ whirring and hissing ]

see that shrinking that?

I'll do a little bit,
then I'll show you.

Pulling it,
making it go like this.

I think that's what
we wanted, right.

Your eyes crooked?
I see what you're doing.

We're getting it now.

when it comes to mechanically

and he's going to be in charge
of making the body dump.

Grabbed a jack.

For like a trailer.

This is going to be up against,
on a pivot,

on the bottom of the box.

We're gonna cut this off,
put a sprocket on it.

Like, that's why
we grabbed a bicycle.

And then we're going to
extend -- keep this handle.

So put chain and sprockets

wherever we want
to locate the handle.

-Okay.
-And then you just turn it up.

Awesome.

Lickety-sprocket.

[ laughter ]

alex, don't talk a lot.

He's looking at things
and thinking about it, you know.

He's using
this old ticker up here.

And some people do
and some people don't,

and alex is one of those people
that uses his brain.

Alex: It's actually going to
mount just like this.

And then the chain,
sprockets --

chain's gonna go on here
right straight up

to where the handle's
gonna be.

Aaron made an arm
that connects on the frame

that sits under the dump bed.

The jack connects to the arm.

When you turn
the jack handle,

it tilts the dump bed.

Thing's heavy.
- Yeah.

Aaron: We got a heavy load
to lift.

Looking at the bike chain
itself

and the sprocket setup,

realized we better get
something heavier duty.

I don't think this chain
is going to work.

alex: Our initial design
was to use the bicycle chain

to crank up the dump,

but I don't think
the bicycle chain is,

you know, strong enough
to dump the load.

get a bigger one

off a motorcycle
at my father's.

Alex: We got chain, but we're

Alex: We're going with
some bigger shaft,

bigger gear, bigger chain,
bigger sprocket.

We like to use these as
the bottom of the system

and then we'll go to a larger
diameter sprocket

right out of the handle.

Just going to physically
turn the jaw faster

by having
a changing gear ratio.

-Say we're going industrial.
-Aaron: We're going heavy duty.

Alex: I think that chain
is strong enough,

but when we get it onto
the box, I'll find out.

Can you wind her up for me,
alex, little bit there?

I hate to get you down
on your knees and do the deal,

but that is
cooler than [bleep].

And as you can see,
the cowl is small.

I didn't really want
to get into modifying too much.

when you get into it
and you get the big stick shift

and it shifts like an old truck,
it feels like an old truck,

well, it must have been
an old truck.

And that is the transmission?

That's the transmission
that goes with it.

That transmission

She's just as heavy
as the engine is.

Wow.

She's got the brakes
right on to it.

And you get the clutch,
flyweel's still on there.

Everything is there.
The parts are there for it.

Back in the '50s
and the '60s,

you would have
a one-ton dump truck,

that six-cylinder engine --
for sure, you would.

This engine would have almost as
much power as a v8 would have.

It will fit our build
just perfect, you know?

What do you think
you would want for it?

If it just sits here,
I'm never going to use it again.

So this is a little
heavier gauge

than what we would use
in a body of a car.

The look for the dumptruck
is gonna be two-tone.

different paint jobs.

I just thought that,
if we just painted it white,

and put a nice black
fender on it,

it could be
what it could have been.

I looked towards the past, and
some of the black and white cars

back in the past
were gorgeous.

last night.

with the dumptruck build.

It took forever
to get the dumptruck system

figured out, so it's all hands
on deck right now.
