you walk into Wrigley Field,

that you're taken there by,
in this case, my uncle...

...it's like stepping into Oz.

And I never left.

Theo Epstein: Thinking about
all the fans that you meet

and how long they've waited,
and generations that maybe,

you know,
didn't get to see it

and the ones that are
holding on to see it,

and people like Ed,
who it would just mean so much to,

that keeps us
going forward every day

trying to make this happen.

It cuts so deep for him, and...

the experiences that he had,

coming to Wrigley as a kid,

and I think he took

a lot of that with him.

1 remember back in '13,

when Pearl Jam played
their first show here at Wrigley,

you know, we were
in the middle of a rebuilding year.

Some of the band guys,
and they had--

Ed's always asking,
but the band guys were asking,

like, "What do you think?

When, you know, when's
the team gonna get good?"

And I remember saying,
"Just give us three years.”

So now it's 2016.

We're now just four wins away
from the World Series.

Took the baseball world
by storm a little bit.

Man: So, now that
Pearl Jam's back at Wrigley...

incredibly magical season
for the Chicago Cubs.

It's good,
it's been a special year so far.

Radio Announcer: In Cubs history,
we've never had a season like this.

That feeling,
it still happens every time.

There's-- there's something
incredibly special about that place.

Just going back
to when I was a kid

and sitting
in the left field bleachers.

Well, for a while
1 was in the right field,

'cause my favorite player
was named Jose Cardenal

and he was in right field.

shared that when we first met.

Yeah, we both grew up,

His uncle John brought him here.

- My first game,
1 was right behind one of these poles.

- My dad brought me here.
I was probably four years old.

Since I was a kid.

Theo: He grew up
really in the '70s.

Those teams were a lot of fun,

but those teams weren't great.

- No one was in the ballpark.

I mean, no one was
in the upper deck.

You know, my brother,
in the olden, olden days,

used to play hide and seek
in Wrigley Field,

'cause there was no one there!

- During the games?
- During the games, yes.

But, yeah, the history of the Cubs

has not always been success.

Man: The Chicago Cubs have
gone longer than any team

in United States professional sports
without winning a title.

Barack Obama: 'Cause the Cubs have
been waiting, like, 108 years.

The last time the Cubs won,

Thomas Edison was alive,

and they hadn't invented
sliced bread yet.

Man: Being a Cubs fan
used to be considered

a kind of a sickness.

Woman: One thing you hear about
is the billy goat curse.

- The curse of the billy goat.
- Woman: Quickly tell us.

Man: A billy goat and his owner,
a Cubs fan,

were kicked out of game four
of the 1945 World Series.

You know,
if you're a lifelong Cubs fan,

your hope muscle,
it's been through a lot.

It's sustained a lot, you know?

You've worked out that muscle.

You've got a pretty good hope muscle.

And it's a character builder,

and I think it makes for good activists,

and it make for a community

that comes together

based on not glory and winning

but, you know,
comforting each other.

It's been that way
for quite a long time.

Now, on game day,

there's stands with t-shirts

and pennants and balloons.

So the players would park here.

Everybody crowds around,

tries to get autographs
as they drive out.

So here's Murphy's Bleachers,

right across the way, which is
a fine place to get a dog and...

- My husband, Jim Murphy,
bought the bar in 1980.

He wanted this bar,

and he had a vision for what
the neighborhood would become.

Unfortunately,
my husband died in 2003.

That was the first year
1 was on my own here.

That was when the Cubs
came very close

to going into the World Series,
not winning it.

I'm sorry, you guys with your--
being with rock musicians

all the time,
you must be going nuts.

Eddie Vedder, he used
to come here when he was a kid

and get a hot dog.

Our friendship
just developed over the years.

1 play the ukulele now
because of him.

is a huge Cub fan,

- So this is just recently completed?

We dug a tunnel underneath Wrigley,

This is now our batting cage.

This is our old clubhouse.

So up through 2015,

Eddie: It was really,
the big change was

reaching out and getting
Theo from Boston.

Stephen Colbert: At the age of just 28,

Epstein became
the Red Sox general manager

and gave them
a World Series title,

breaking the curse
of the Bambino.

Then Epstein moved on
to the Chicago Cubs.

Radio Announcer: He joined
a struggling franchise

that had won just
a single playoff series

in the preceding 103 years.

- You know, it was a big risk
for Theo and his family

to pull up stakes like that,

but ultimately, and I--

there's no ego involved here.
1 know him well.

It was the ultimate challenge.

The ultimate challenge is
to win with the Cubs.

we've come-- come a long way

from the high school
locker room that we used to have.

It's kind of like dressing
in a nightclub in here,

a Cubs-themed nightclub.

Joe: I knew when I saw
that team begin to play

that there was something else
happening in Wrigley.

The right talent is now on the field,

and it had to do
with the reconstruction

by Theo Epstein and Joe Madden.

- Joe Madden is so far ahead
of every manager in baseball,

in terms of the moves he makes,
how he uses players,

how he moves people around.

Announcer: See if Joe Madden
will make the pitching change,

and he does.

- When we hired Joe,
1 always thought,

you know, this guy is
kinda too good to be true.

All the colorful things he says.

His act on the field.

I said, it must be,
to some extent, an act.

The closer you get,
you realize,

that's who he is,
it's all authentic.

1 remember sending Eddie
a long text and telling him,

"Hey, you're--
you're really gonna like this guy.

This is your kind of guy.”

Eddie, he spends
so much time here

and is so connected with the team

and the-- and the players.

We had a spare column here

that we didn't know
what to do with.

He decided to donate
a bunch of guitars

that he's used in concert,

decorated the bottom
with Pearl Jam posters.

and through the years,

as they play more
and more shows here,

His health took a turn after that,

and as we think back
on the last chapter of Ernie's life,

it was really that--
that moment with Eddie on stage

and "All the Way" playing,
that was his farewell

to Wrigley Field and the fans.

July 21, 1991,

so it was-- it was 25 years,
one month and one day,

it was our first show
in Chicago.

It was right down at the Metro
right down the street,

about a block away.

And to think it took 25 years
to make it one block.

But that's where you come in,
'cause we couldn't--

we couldn't do it
without you all this time,

and we really appreciate you
for not just taking the ride,

but giving us the fuel
to keep going

and look further
into the future.

1 never felt...

Jeff Ament: That was, like,
a big show for us, yeah.

Played with Soul Asylum.
It was big-- it was a big deal.

It was, like, first time
we went cross-country.

1 think we just came up
with the name.

- It was our first tour.
We were in a van.

Um, and we had--
and we had the first record

and "I Got a Feeling,” I think
that's all we probably had.

- Pearl Jam was the support band
their first time through the Metro.

Pearl Jam
made $250 that night.

And then the following year, '92,
is when they came back

with the release of-- of "Ten."”

The band at this point

is beginning
to get some real love.

It sold out very quickly.

to see Pearl Jam perform.

- U2 was thinking about taking
us out for a few shows and...

- I just remember
being nervous, like, oh, man,

The Edge is up there,
like, watching us.

Mike McReady: I had just quit
my day job and this was like,

oh, this-- something might
happen with this, I hope.

We got this good singer
and we're a good band.

We're not tight.
We"re kinda tight,

but we're just
becoming a band.

We wanted to make records

and we wanted to write
better songs

and be a better player
and all that stuff.

At one point,
1 made a giant list

of all my favorite
bass players

and thought,
what are the guys

that I should be channeling
through our music?

And all these guys,

if you're looking to reach
down deep somewhere,

certain nights, just sort of
look at the back of the neck

and you gravitate
towards whichever player.

Doc Dunn, Dee Dee Ramone,
John Paul Jones.

Mike Watt.

Andy Fraser from Free,

who might be my favorite
bass player.

Jerry Casale from Devo.

Chuck Dukowski
from Black Flag.

Tom Petersson from Cheap Trick,
Chicago guy.

The whole reason
1 played 12-string bass

in the early days, which was,
you know, kind of the sound

for "Jeremy" and "Why Go"

and some of those songs
on the first record.

People always
talk about, you know,

"What you're doing right now
is beyond your wildest dreams.”

It's like,
that wasn't even the dream.

Like, what we're--
what we're doing

and what we've-- what we've
accomplished as a band...

Those weren't dreams.

Those-- those didn't
seem like possibilities.

Mike McReady: The difference
in playing the Metro

all those years ago and then playing
Wrigley Field now

is immeasurable,
and I can't even--

it's hard to quantify
what it means.

1 can feel it.

1 can't put it into terms,
other than I have 25 years

of-- of perspective on that,

and the music still
really matters now,

and it matters more than ever.

It matters more than it did
back then, to me, I think,

because we have--
we have more of it.

We have more people
listening to it

that tell me that
it's changed their lives.

Man:
It's not just the lyrics.

They have a way of putting things
in perspective

that's applicable
to every life situation.

Good, bad, hard, easy,
everything in between.

It just--
it seems to apply.

memorable Pearl Jam moment?

- Uh, well, um...

The Joe was special
'cause I had just lost my dad.

make something better

for somebody's life,

1 was crying on stage
