I've lived on this farm
for about 17 years,

and like you, I'm spending more
time at home than ever before.

I have 150 [bleep] acres
that have to be planted.

So I'm going to take you
behind the scenes

as I do my gardening projects.

A lady making her own fence.

I'm going to help
my celebrity friends...

the book on gardening.

Well...

This is my horse, rinze.

We've just had a beautiful ride

and now I'm taking him
back down to the barn.

I have lots of animals
here on the farm,

and I love my animals.

A lot of my friends
say they'd rather

come back
in their next life

as one of my pets
than as themselves.

And that's true.
Don't you think, rinze?

It's very important to know
how to take care of your pets.

So today I'd like to show you

how to care for the animals
in the best possible way.

come on. Time to go out.

When I first finished
this farm,

I did not have a fenced-in yard
for my dogs,

so we have contrived
to make three dog yards

out of one space.

We have this small space

if I have a young puppy
or a litter of puppies.

We have a sunken garden
right here,

and that can be
for a visiting dog.

And he can say
right down in that yard

and be safe from these monsters.

Creme brulee and bete noire.

Here's a little mouse for you.
Here. Go get it.

Get that mouse. Get that mouse.

And now this is the big space.

This space is large enough
for four dogs,

five dogs, six dogs,
and where they can run around,

they can actually
do their business

over in that far corner,

which is cleaned up
every single day, twice a day.

But I've decided I'd like

to make another large dog yard
for my babies.

So I just wanted
to show you today

how easy it is to construct
a section of the fence.

All you need to do is get
some wood to make a frame,

staple some wire to it,
screw in a support frame

and add a base and top to it.

Oh, how I love this.

I get such a satisfaction
when working with tools.

That may sound odd,
but it's true.

You can go straight
to the lumber yard

and buy your one by four pine.

I've sanded the edges
with a medium grit sandpaper,

and we're making this five feet
by three feet.

And now we're going to use
this wonderful hardware cloth.

This is what I put around
the bottom part of my garden

to keep the rabbits
out of the garden

trying to get to
the strawberries

before I get to them.

Okay, and we're using
heavy duty staples,

and just make sure

it's straight
all the way to the end.

I like doing carpentry.

My first carpentry job
was building my kitchen cabinets

at our little berkshire farm
many years ago

when I first got married,

and my kitchen cabinets
were a disaster.

Nothing was straight.
No doors would close.

And I tried. I really tried.

But it was just a nightmare.

Okay, that looks good.

Okay, so now we are going
to put on the security.

And we want to drill holes.

I think the corners are good.

And then a screw
like every six inches

on the side.

There.

So if you want this to be
a freestanding little yard,

you can put bases
like this on it,

make sure the l-hinge
has plenty of screws

holding it in place.

There. Okay.

Let's see
how this stands up.

One last part
of this whole fence

is this beautiful top,
the lip of the fence.

And this is cut pretty much
exactly the right size.

You can have it overhang more
on one side

or you can center it right
in the middle.

And we will just
screw the screws in.

What did we do before we had
electric- and battery-run

tools like this?

It was so difficult, and every
project was a real big deal.

Now look at me.

A lady making

Still has
to be primed and painted,

and I have to make about
20 sections like this

for the yard I have envisioned,
but it's definitely worth it.

You have something
that will last a good long time.

It'll keep your animals safe
and give you peace of mind

while you can relax indoors
without the puppy.

So we've seen lots of studs
on my property.

Now I want to show you
some really cute asses.

Now, I've never worn
a garbage bag before.

This is totally new for me.

Oh.

So oscar got his haircut.

He would remove

before he let me
cut his hair.

I would love
to get some tips

on how to give my dog
the right haircut.

I gave oscar a haircut
a couple of weeks ago

because I found a tick on him
when we were in canada.

So I shaved him,

but I shaved him with,
like, the wrong shaver.

I did the best I could,
martha, I swear.

But he had
a very jagged haircut.

He looked like
a little rat.
Oh, but now it's growing back
in a little bit, I can see.

But, you know,
dogs don't like to be shaved

just because
the hair itself acts

as an insulation
against the heat

and also against the sunburn.

So don't let them
get sunburned

while he doesn't have a coat.
-Yeah, for sure.

Justin, did he participate
in the shearing of the dog?

He tried to help a little bit
and he just kept being like,

"you're just
ruining the dog.

You're just
ruining his haircut."

but it grew back nicely.

Sweet. Yes.
It is growing back nicely.

I tried to
keep affirming him

and telling him
he looked really handsome

so that he didn't feel bad.
-[ laughs ]

so oscar got his haircut.

is dog washing.

He is raising black labradors.

westminster last year

when he was showing
this beautiful dog.

And this is safari, who was --
was she number-one bitch?

The year before,
I showed empress qin,

my female chow,
who did very well.

So we've been very happy
with our beautiful dogs.

to do the chow chows.

for taking care of the dogs

because he is like
the dog whisperer.

There's many rules to follow
when you're bathing animals.

We don't shoot it right
in their face,

and make sure the water
is a nice,

mild, warm temperature.

Now you're going to get
some shampoo for dogs.

So, start at the neck
and go down to the tail.

Just make sure you really get
those hindquarters nice

and wet and soapy,

and then rub-a-dub-dub.

so, very important
to rinse totally.

You want to get every bit.
Can you stand her up?

I need to
get her stomach.

She looks like a platypus.
[ chuckles ]

okay, carlos.
I'm done with her.

Oh, there she goes.

And, boy,
I would be totally soaked

if I didn't have
my garbage bag bib on.

now, blow drying.
Now you sit. Sit, girl.

So now when you're using
a hair dryer,

put your hand
under the hair dryer

so that you never,
ever burn your dog.

I do my dogs
every single day.

That's to check them
for fleas and ticks

for knots and brambles and
and whatever else.

A good, healthy dog
could probably be groomed

at least once a month.

Oh, yeah.

But be careful
with a brush like this

on the hindquarters
or underbelly of your dogs.

Hindquarters
are extremely tender.

Be cognizant.

You wouldn't want anybody
brushing you. [ laughs ]

roughly and pulling out
all of your hair.

No. That hair.

Okay, we're going to stop
with the blow drying.

Good girl, qin.

I lower her myself
and just --

let's do safari's nails.

-Yeah.
-Aww.

And that's how she
gets in the car.

She's so great.

So the nails,
they're my pet peeve.

I like to keep them very,
very short.

And once a week --
-you do?

Oh, yeah.

I use this fantastic
rotary dremel

that's designed for wood
but works perfectly for dogs.

So this is long.
You'll know --

my dogs have not had their nails
done for five months.

-Oh, five months?
-I know.

That's not good.

seen the donkeys lately?

-They're so cute.

This is billy.

Oh, I love these so much.

Now, these are sicilian
miniatures of different sizes,

but these beautiful donkeys
come from a farm down

in alderson, west virginia,

where I had to spend
five months at camp.

And next door, our two newest --
jude and truman --

named after my grandchildren,

and they are rescues.

Now, they were skittish and sad
and just in about four months,

they are like different
friendly animals.

And look. It looks like
they have nail polish on.
I know. So shiny.

So I have four pet ducks
in my backyard

and they have
a water feature

and they have a nice part
of the yard that they live in.

But I need to build them
like a coop --

a chicken coop
but for ducks.

So any advice you have on
that would be awesome.

of the pandemic panic,

we were like, "oh,
we could have eggs."

-we love duck eggs.

Anyway,
you do need a coop.

At night, it's very important
to have an enclosed yard --

top, sides and bottom.

-That has good ventilation.
-That has very good ventilation.

Yes.
This is the shed that they
sleep in now to be safe,

but it's just --
it's really small.

It doesn't get
great ventilation.

We have to clean it,
like, constantly.

I would make it
so you can walk in --

at least five
and a half feet tall.

Okay. Okay.

So for that, you'll need
eight-foot two by fours.

You have to sink the two
by fours down into the ground

at least two and a half feet,

and I would make them
maybe four feet apart.

And then I bury my wire,
my side wire, down at least

eight inches into the ground.

-That's important.
-That way nobody's going

to burrow under the fence.

And then make a gate.
You have to have a gate.

-Yeah.
-I will do that.

We live in woodward, oklahoma,
and we have a project

that we really hope

this is our cat tree
made out of reclaimed branches

that fell down in an ice storm
a couple of years ago.

It's got a lot of nice,
really scratchy places for cats.

It's basically just the branches
screwed to plywood, leveled off,

and then upholstered to look
like a really nice piece

of furniture in our house
that we like to look at

and our cats like to lie on.

Martha, I hope
this impressed you.

Martha: I have cats, and I know
how much cats love to climb

and be on top of it all.

Empress tang
and princess peony

would adore such perches.

That cat tree is gorgeous.

I wouldn't mind having that
in any room in my house.

that I can give to suki
to eat

that will be nutritious
and healthy.

Well, I think you're crazy

if you're growing your dog's
food like that.

But if you love suki that much,
most food is okay for dogs.

But don't let them eat produce

such as onions,
garlic, grapes and avocados.

My dogs love carrots cooked.

They love peas.
They love kale.

And I must say, my beautiful,
energetic dogs have not had

to visit a veterinarian
for now over two years.

Wow.
Because that's when
I started making their food

on a regular basis.

So I think it's --
I think it's really healthy

and they really love it.

And the bunnies.
