Episode 02

This is Chiyansha.

We finally arrived.

Fei Kouer must be up ahead.

Let's go.

= Western border, Chiyansha =

Your clothes are too out of place here. Wait here for me.

= Duan Yan, Son of King Wei Nan =

I wonder, Prince Duan, isn't it better if

you bring the map directly to Guzi?

Why make trouble for yourself and come to Chiyansha first?

To be honest, Prime Minister

Guzi people are brutal and cruel.

I have the map

but I can't just hand it over directly.

I can only ask for your help

Chiyansha always stay out of disputes.

If we help you get close to Guzi,

we would become an enemy of Dasheng.

I'm afraid it would bring disaster to us.

Prime Minister,

Dasheng destroyed my family.

I have no other choice.

If Prime Minister can ensure my safety,

pull some strings to get me into contact with Guzi,

you can name whatever price you want.

Furthermore,

the emperor of Dasheng is powerless.

It's the ministers who lead the court.

They're caught up with internal conflict

so there's nothing to be scared of.

After Guzi has the map,

invading Dasheng from the south will be a piece of cake

By then,

forget about this jade jewellery,

the entire Lidu will become Chiyansha's territory.

If we talk about rewards according to the Prime Minister,

securing my deal for trading the map

will be the first step.

Prince Duan, you're quite talented at negotiating.

Tomorrow, I will report to my King about this matter.

Then I

thank the Prime Minister.

I have a mansion in the city.

Prince Duan can stay there for now.

I'll send someone to inform you as soon as I have news.

Brother Kou, you're quick with your hands.

No one will see through this disguise.

We've traveled hard for a month.

We all look rough and languished.

Only you seem unaffected.

There must be some secret to it.

Looks like you don't plan to tell me your secret.

I'm curious how Brother Kou can maintain an unblemished complexion.

So I did some fortunetelling.

Guess what the results said?

It says you are kindhearted and a beauty.

Keep your head down.

Today, only entry is permitted. Leaving is forbidden.

Search carefully!

No, no! You can't leave, come back in a few days.

Go back.

No, come back in a few days. No, no, go back!

Brother Kou,

The fortune also told me

that Brother Kou is talented and gentle hearted at a young age.

But you think too much, don't laugh enough, and are too stubborn.

If you want, you can talk with a doctor.

I'm a good listener.

= Chiyansha, Sand Clock Square =

Brother Kou, look at those flowers. They're not bad.

They'll look great on you, want to try them on?

Teacher, Fei Kouer is a man, how can he wear flowers?

There's too many people, it's not safe. We should hurry.

You deserve it.

Silly student.

Flowers for sale, flowers for sale!

Young master, would you like to buy some flowers?

It's indeed beautiful.

What a shame I have no one to give them to.

Young master can wait for Madam Xueji here

and give the flowers to her. She's a great beauty.

Who's Madam Xueji?

She's the most beautiful woman in Chiyansha.

The king loves and dotes on her.

But she hasn't been feeling well lately.

So she will visit the Moni Cliff to pray.

What happened to Madam Xueji?

I have no idea, my mother didn't tell me.

Oh, Madam Xueji is coming!

Chief.

(Arrived in Chiyansha)

I know.

This isn't Zhongjing, everyone be careful.

My guests, this way please.

Come, please.

Please.

Would you like to check in or have something to eat?

We'll have four rooms. The young mistress will pay.

Young mistress, I want to look around the street, please excuse me.

Four rooms. Don't disturb us unless we call you.

No problem.

Changge, I will be back in a moment. Stay with the doctor.

Do you need anything?

Your business is blooming.

Now that I've seen the owner, I know why.

Young master, you have a way with words.

The accounts here are wrong.

You're right.

Is young master also a merchant?

I'm a doctor running a small business. You have to calculate carefully.

How lucky I am, I feel dizzy when looking at the accounts.

I could use someone to help me.

How can I refuse an invitation from a beauty?

Young master, you can read the characters in Chiyansha's language.

Have you been here before?

When I was a child.

No wonder! I know almost everyone from Zhongjing here.

But I have never seen someone like you.

What are you doing?

A decent gentleman should read classics,

and behave with integrity.

Since the Chief asked me to keep an eye on you,

as your student, I have to point out your faults.

You shouldn't learn from Fei Kouer, fooling around all day.

See the two young warriors from Zhengyang Palace?

They are working so professionally.

And you?

What are you doing now?

Eating raisins...

Want some?

Is it tasty?

Try it.

Have you inquired about the curfew?

Let's talk upstairs.

Okay.

I heard from the local merchants,

Chiyansha wants to show goodwill to Guzi.

Guzi is hostile towards us.

Merchants like us from Zhongjing will have a hard time.

Plus, the Prince from Zhongjing came to Chiyansha

right at this time.

I don't believe it's not connected.

Filthy men, not a single gentleman. Eat your food!

Chiyansha women

have such smooth skin.

They're still lacking, compared to the women from Zhongjing.

My lord, I got a new servant girl recently.

She's with me right now, would you like to take a look？

Of course!

Ah Qing!

Come here!

Come here already!

This girl

isn't even considered a great beauty in Zhongjing.

This little beauty really is-

Oh, my lord,

If this is your type

I will bring you even better girls next time.

Ah Qing, go back and tell the master I'll have a few more drinks here before returning.

Go on.

This girl has a temper.

Come on, my lords, let's drink.

Bottoms up.

Little brother, I have to remind you kindly

the Prime Minister is examining the traveling merchants

in order to protect your prince from Zhongjing.

Don't worry, wait for a few days until that Duan guy leaves.

Then I will help you with your business here.

Come, let's drink another.

Bottom's up!

= Lady Xie, Three Snow Devils =

= Chou Nuer, Three Snow Devils =

= Gui Tongzi, Three Snow Devils =

This way please, sir.

Sir.

Would you like to have something to eat or check in?

Where are you taking me?

You'll find out in a moment.

Don't you Zhengyang Palace people know to ask before entering someone's room?

We are facing a big mission, how can you go to drink？

Young warrior, don't forget I'm a thief.

Enough, the mission is more important.

Let's summarize all the information we collected during the day.

If the information is correct

the ambassador from Guzi will arrive in Chiyansha tomorrow evening.

From tomorrow on, a curfew will be imposed.

All merchants from Zhongjing will be examined strictly.

What about you?

Duan Yan conspires with Prime Minister Luo Muye.

On the day Duanyan arrived in Chiyansha

Luo Muye arranged a mansion for Duan to stay in

and sent a large number of guards there.

It suggests the map is very likely in that mansion.

Guzi troops in the city,

they are brutal and cruel

If they get the map first,

we will have little chance to catch up to them and retrieve the map.

We'd better act quickly before they arrive.

Don't worry.

Before you have a clear picture of Duan's mansion,

Changge and I will not act.

I suggest you sober up

and make your preparations.

I can go with you.

Not necessary. I never need help.

This mission is important, you have to listen to my senior.

You talk too much.

Never argue with a drunk.

= Chiyansha, Duanyan's Mansion =

During the day, soldiers are on patrol.

There's no way we can approach the room.

Tomorrow, we will meet the Prime Minister

Young master have a good sleep.

You may go rest.

Waxberry candy?

You...

Chiyansha is not only a lively place in the day,

but is also a city full of nightlife.

Indeed, night time is when the city comes to life.

Come, have a seat.

By the way,

there were so many people on the streets today. Did something happen?

Madam Xue Ji went out.

Naturally, everyone wants to take a look at her.

Why did Madam Xue Ji come out today?

The young prince has a strange illness.

He's been in a coma for a long time.

So Mistress will pray on Moni Cliff during festival time.

Young master, here.

That really is an important matter.

I heard that all courtiers here must pay their respect to her.

Certainly they do,

Madam Xue Ji has the heart of the King.

Without Madame Xue Ji's smile in Chiyansha,

it would be like if the sky had no sun.

Everyone wants to gain her favour,

especially that miserly Prime Minister Luo Muye.

After hearing all that, I would be willing to do anything

to meet Madame Xue Ji.

You really know how to joke.

Forget about you,

even your prince wouldn't be able to meet with her.

I'm a doctor, I can heal people.

The prince is nothing, what can he offer to gain her favour?

His servants always come to my place

to inquire about rare treasures,

all to make the Madam happy.

But you Zhongjing people are strange,

how can rare treasure be found so easily?

What's worse, people are coming from Guzi. The whole city is under curfew.

Most rich Zhongjing merchants have already escaped,

Young master, here.

Have a taste of our desserts from the west.

I heard the Prime Minister has something to do with this matter.

The Prime Minister pities Prince Duan.

So he asked the Madam to say a few nice things about him to the King.

Just to help him get a foot in the door.

Are you interested?

Let's play a few rounds.

The doctor still hasn't returned?

He went to gamble.

How did your scouting go?

Tomorrow at noon, Duan Yan will leave the mansion to meet the Prime Minister.

It will be our only chance.

The Shanhe map is in Duan Yan's room.

Correct.

But the guards never leave the room

it's impossible to enter into the room singlehandedly.

So tomorrow...

You don't need to go tomorrow.

I'll go.

What are you talking about?

Wait for me at the inn. Get horses ready.

Absolutely not! Stealing this map needs all three of us.

Duan's mansion is well guarded.

There's no way only one person can retrieve the map.

I have never lost.

That day in Xiaozong's mansion... Is that what you call not losing?

If other sects are aware of your deal with Wen Siyuan,

what will they think of you?

It's fine if Miss Shen doesn't believe me

but you shouldn't threaten me.

It's a dangerous mission.

Senior is breaking the rules by working with you.

Why are you still mouthing off?

If you two want to die, I will not stop you.

However, the three bodyguards around Duan Yan

are no amateurs.

I'm a thief, my life is nothing.

You are two young warriors from jianghu sects.

If you are killed by evil guys, that would be a shame.

Who are those three bodyguards you mentioned?

Have you two heard of the Three Snow Devils?

The Three Devils live in the snow area.

They gained extreme notoriety outside the border.

Duan Yan hired them with gold.

The Three Devils are extremely skilled martial artists.

The leader Gui Tongzi (lit. "Ghost Child") is the most skilled.

He slaughtered the Cui family in Hexi single handedly.

Of course you two young warriors are not afraid.

I am though.

Understood.

You can explain your plan.

Based on the skill of the Three Devils,

we can't win against the three of them together.

So we have to separate them to get the map.

Duan Yan will visit Luo Muye tomorrow.

The Three Devils will stay with him.

They will leave only one to watch over Duan's mansion.

Look, Duan's mansion is 10 miles away from Luo Muye's mansion.

Taking a carridge there and back will take him 2 sticks of incense (an ancient Chinese way of recording time).

Duan's mansion is well guarded.

His room lies in the middle of the mansion.

It won't be easy to walk on the roof or climb the wall.

I will dress like the servant and climb over the side wall.

It will take me at least 1 stick of incense.

We don't know the exact position of the map.

However the hidden place must be locked and booby-trapped.

To get through the lock, I need half a stick of incense.

Once I succeed, I will need another half stick of incense,

to escape to safety.

In total, two sticks of incense.

Duan Yan won't leave Luo Muye's mansion immediately when he visits.

We still have a chance.

But if something happens...

What do you need us to do?

I bet consecutive numbers.

No way! How can it be?

Let me open the cap.

Who are you? How dare you?

Where did this brat come from? Don't you know the rules here?

Mistress, this is my friend.

Since he's the young master's friend,

then we'll save him some face.

It really is consecutive numbers!

Not bad!

Come, come, let's not ruin the mood. Let's continue!

Bet with me.

Bet a drink?

Big or small?

Small.

Big or small?

Big.

Who are you really?

Zuo Qingci.

What's your relationship with Wen Siyuan?

He hired me.

He wouldn't ask me to protect a doctor for no reason.

Then I have no idea, I'm just a businessman.

Four one's, a sky full of stars!

You know what we call this where I come from?

We call that running through the back door.

How much did Wen Siyuan pay you?

You're joking.

You use the silver needles with best quality,

write prescriptions with a brush made of the softest weasel hair.

That alone costs more than 200 taels.

You pay that much attention to me?

Are you... towards me...

Stop dreaming.

Leave the city tomorrow morning, wait for us at 10 miles away west.

We can't take care of you

You're going to take action already?

Don't be rash.

I haven't seen the beautiful Madam Xue Ji yet.

If you see pigeons,

just remember, I'm waiting for you.

Small, small, small!

Teacher, did you bet money with that thief?

You didn't lose our travel money, did you?

Do something for me tomorrow.

Only one street lies between Duan's mansion and the Sand Clock Square.

Tomorrow, park a carriage at the side of the market.

Fill the carridge with fabric.

Mix our clothes in among the fabric.

Remember, don't leave the carriage.

It's our only way out of here, it's crucial.

We can't afford any negligence.

Boss, give me a cup of tea.

One moment, please.

I will monitor the entrance of Duan's mansion.

I will act as soon as he leaves.

The Devil left to guard the mansion is likely to arrange large numbers of guards.

Young Warrior Yin will help me enter the inner yard from the west wall.

Then hide on the north roof.

Help me draw the guards away.

Don't show yourself. I can manage it alone.

If everything goes well,

I will meet you at two quarter past noon by the carriage.

Remember, we have only two sticks of incense worth of time.

Two sticks of incense later, you two retreat.

Don't wait for me.

That day in Xiaozong's mansion... Is that what you meant by not losing?

He never denied that he stole the Guihong sword.

Is he related to Shang Wan?

If the map ends up in his hands...

Give back the money you stole from me.

Who stole your money?

You dare argue?

Where's the money, give it back!

Need me to help you remember?

A servant in a brothel

dares argue with me?

Watch your mouth!

Where's the money, cut the crap!

I already told you I didn't take any money!

Are you still pretending?

Let me help you with your memory.

Give the money back!

Hand over the money! You wanna die?

I said I didn't take any money!

Hurry up!

Be quiet.

How much?

Not much, 5 taels.

I'll give it to you.

You better watch yourself!

Brothers,

let's go have a drink!

Why did you give them money?

I didn't steal anything!

It's me.

Why are you here?

I suspect he's Shang Wan's man.

To be safe, we have to get the map by ourselves.

Better safe than sorry.

Once he has the map, we have no chance to get it back.

But...

No buts.

Listen to me, cover me, let's go.

What the hell do you want?

Wait here.

I'll get your money back.

Go.

Go!

Senior, wait for me in the carriage.

Prime Minister.

I already told you,

hurry and find a rare treasure as a gift.

If Madam Xue Ji is happy, everything will go smoothly.

You have already been here for a while

but you haven't found any appropriate gifts.

Please give me more time, I will definitely find a treasure.

As long as you know.

Don't waste any more time here.

Find a treasure.

I don't feel well today.

Excuse me for not hosting longer.

I take my leave.

Someone was poisoned.

= About a quarter past noon =

This is our only way out, it's crucial.

We can't afford any mistakes.

Remember, we have only two sticks of incense.

When you see pigeons

remember

I'm waiting for you.

= A quarter past noon =

You have a wife and concubines at home?

Only my wife.

You are afraid of your wife.

Halt.

Wait here for a moment.

Explain yourself!

What's wrong with you?!

Lower your voice!

The doctor says it's because I'm afraid of my wife!

You're afraid of your wife?!

I'm going to kill you!

I haven't even beaten you today, you already need a doctor?!

The road is blocked, we have to make a detour.

Switch from carriage to a horse.
