The star of india in san diego

has been afloat for more than 150 years.

In that time, there have been many deaths

across three oceans.

From a stowaway falling from a mast...

A crew member being crushed apart

by an anchor chain...

[ snapping ]

...And a captain slitting his throat.

The staff know they're not alone aboard this ship.

Tonight, we're sailing on a voyage of the damned.

There's a whole community of pirates.

Since first setting sail in 1863,

the star of india

transported hundreds of immigrants, workers, and crew

during her 21 grueling voyages

around the world.

In that time,

many of her passengers never saw their final destination,

only to meet their fate while out at sea.

Since the 1970s, the india

has been docked in san diego

as a living vestige to its seaworthy legacy.

This was awesome, you guys.

This episode, it hits me here in my heart, too.

This was my dad's favorite episode.

Why do they call this ship the star of india?

Her first trip was to india.

And this boat is 150 years old?

How is this ship purported to be haunted?

Well, they transported an army captain back to England.

And he tried to kill himself,

and he was in the first mate's cabin when he died.

Can you take me to the cabin where he committed suicide?

Yeah, sure.

the mate's cabin. There's been lots of different reports

of things happening in this cabin especially.

Do you know how he killed himself?

He cut his throat twice.

The ship's surgeon caught him in time,

fixed him up, and then it's reported

that a few days later,

he ripped out the stitches and bled to death.

Zak: That's just brutal.

Twice? That's such a violent, violent way.

He tried one time... Oh, my god.

...Then he did it again.

That memory of that death is still there.

Yeah. Wow.

And his spirit is still there.

Davis: It has been reported to me

there has been a spirit in this cabin.

One day, we had -- a lady was in here,

and she woke up,

and there was a guy in full rain gear

standing over her, looking down at her like this.

Like, "why are you in my bunk?"

while she was sleeping right here?

Right here.

And to substantiate this claim,

one local investigator

shows us evidence he captured in this cabin,

which may be the spirit of captain mcbarnett.

The shadow coming out of the first mate's cabin.

You captured a shadow figure coming out of that room?

He fades away.

And that's the first mate's cabin?

This is something.

We can't argue with the fact that

that, ironically, is the same room

where he committed suicide.

Sure, lots of things.

I've seen black shadows on the ship.

With this residual activity

experienced in the first mate's cabin,

in concert with the shadow figures

jim has been experiencing,

we can only ascertain that this may be

the spirit of captain mcbarnett.

If so, we also need to understand

about the other documented deaths

on this ship.

A ship like this, it's all made out of wood,

it's all organic material.

It soaks it up, right?

It's a floating time capsule.

The only reports I've had of spirits

that we can kind of go back in history

and find out is a young man

that was a stowaway on board, john campbell.

The loss of john campbell

is the third documented death

on the star of india and perhaps its most tragic.

Discovered at sea by the ship's crew,

the young stowaway was put to work

as penance for his freight.

Can you imagine that, though -- being a stowaway?

I mean, you hear a lot about the news,

and tragically, these stowaways are being in

tractor truck trailers and ships.

Yeah, yeah. Can you imagine that?

You're just trying to escape a bad place, a violent place,

you're scared.

You literally hide on a ship

just to go to a new life, to be a happier life.

He suddenly slipped...

John: No!

plunging to the deck below.

Miraculously, he survived the fall.

But three days later, he finally succumbed to his injuries,

making this his final charter at sea.

Just fyi, we really did not throw a kid off the ship there.

Our research also uncovers the recent loss

of a volunteer on the star of india,

whose shocking death mirrors the fate of john campbell.

And I've also been shoved.

Davis: I was coming down here once,

and I saw a black shadow going in here,

and then I also had a black shadow come out of here

and go all the way down to the other end.

It was not the moving of the ship. I got shoved.

That's what happened to me on the stairs.

I almost fell down the stairs.

I got pushed. It's funny because

a simple push by a spirit -- my most terrifying experience

with a spirit was in vicksburg

when I was tapped twice on my spine,

and it was one of the terrifying moments of my life.

It's scary.

So when you guys hear a simple tap on a shoulder or a shove...

Anything like that. ...When something is shoving you

or touching you without a physical body,

it is also injecting you with the energy of that spirit.

That's what causes the paranormal hangover.

Of the three documented deaths on this ship,

we wonder if one of those spirits

is responsible for attacking jim.

If so, I suspect one of them

is an attached, un-rested entity

who is possessive of this ship.

Well, as of next week, it will be 38 years.

I used to be a night-watchmen on board.

I lived on this ship for about five years.

we're called back to this historic haunted vessel

because sometimes in order to investigate a location,

you just have to work for it.

We got a call from the first mate

and said that because we are allowed to film

and investigate the ship,

that we had to do some work today.

We were given these clothes to put on.

about his recent paranormal experience.

I've seen him with my own eyes, on the deck,

maybe 10 feet away.

I think he was saying hello,

'cause he's realized I've been here for a while.

So he was speaking to you?

This is another example of, like, a lot of time,

we meet people that we don't even expect to talk to.

They're not even on the list.

They're not even an interview, yeah.

That's what I love. That's sometimes where you get

the most important information.

A lot of other groups that have been here

have picked up more with less equipment.

what we are looking for are pieces of equipment

that would have been on this ship,

that we can also use

as paranormal equipment

to try to see if these spirits

will interact with us through the equipment.

okay, right now, we are getting ready

to embark on this massive ship,

the star of india,

a 150-year-old ship,

the oldest iron-hull ship

that's still sailing today.

This was so exciting. It was.

The thrill that you get when you're boarding an old ship

like this in the middle of the night,

nobody's on it but us four,

that's the feeling I crave. I love it.

For those moments we're on that ship,

nothing else matters in our lives.

There's no worry about tomorrow and the bull[bleep]

that we worry about in life.

This is what I'm drawn to.

I love this.

As we board this massive ship

that is completely dark,

every inch of it is pitch black.

We do have a series of night-vision cameras

rolling throughout, including the first class cabin,

the tween deck, and the lower deck.

Okay, I'm gonna start off

by wearing this chest-mounted full-spectrum camera.

I love this camera. And this is a recorder.

It's actually just gonna be recording my voice.

So I'm gonna start off by going in the first class cabin.

And a lot of the people that we interviewed earlier

said that when they try to lay down or sleep in that bed,

we've heard one has been choked.

Other people have seen shadow figures

and even captured shadow figures going into that room.

Watch those cameras, guys, okay?

We were shown some evidence of something moving

earlier on during the interviews.

That was our goal, but I really wanted to

capture something in that cabin,

and sometimes we don't always do.

But I just was really drawn to that cabin.

I could've stayed in there the entire night.

It's said that you were acting really strange

in the days leading up to your death.

Why were you acting strange, captain mcbarnett?

It was pitch black in there,

and again, we like it pitch black

because we can't see infrared light in our eyes.

This infrared light's a whole other spectrum

that these spirits can be visible.

That's why we like to investigate at night,

and it's a lot quieter and there's less

light contamination and audio contamination.

It gives us a good baseline.

I don't believe this to be any medical issue

but more of a residual energy, possibly a spirit

that was thrashed around in these cramped quarters

during a violent storm.

I couldn't imagine being out at sea

and just being stuck on there for months, sometimes years.

It's no surprise people go nuts

and they do kill themselves and go crazy.

Zak: I hear a voice right next to me,

but through our audio, it sounds different

from what I hear with my own ears.

I swear to god, it felt like the boat

All of a sudden, I hear a crystal-clear little girl

coming from the adjacent room

where the doll is located. And what's weird

is that her voice snaps me out of this trance.

It sounds like a little kid.

Zak: It was scary in there, these little rooms.

Captain mcbarnett, can you talk to me?

I still didn't realize the doll was there yet.

'cause you got to remember, I'm not looking in an lcd screen.

It's on my chest.

You're just in total darkness.

I thought somebody was trying to get in the door.

That was loud.

And as you can see, there's nobody there.

I conduct an evp session in the first mate's cabin...

What object would've been touched by the spirit

when he was in living form the most in that cabin?

And imagine when he was committing suicide,

he shut the door to close him off from everybody else.

Those surfaces absorb those moments,

particularly when they're high emotional moments.

I immediately review my recordings

and discover a spirit telling me that he gave up.

After capturing that voice, all of a sudden,

I'm overcome by very sad emotions.

These feelings are not my own.

I believe I am feeling the pain that captain mcbarnett had

before taking his own life.

There's nobody on the ship.

All we need is a simple little

speck of voice or something, and that guides us to

what we're gonna do next.

Because the little girl's voice I heard in the first class cabin

is now being captured on the tween deck camera,

I send aaron and billy to investigate that area,

while jay and I monitor the x cameras

for further activity.

-Whoa. -What's going on?

It's like I just walked into a different wall,

like this is a different area than in there.

Hey, aaron, right where you felt that,

that's the area where gouwap was killed, remember?

Aaron: Oh, yeah.

Remember we went by the chains, aaron?

Oh, yeah. That's the stairs I got pushed.

-Isn't that where he died? -Down there, right?

That's where he got caught in the chains.

that his spirit loves to play tag here.

and we think that that's john campbell.

Just as if it's still playing that hide and seek tag game.

Because we feel that the spirits

of john campbell and other children

are playing games with us,

we decide to conduct a two-part experiment

using an old nautical compass that we purchased earlier,

along with a homemade electroscope,

as we were told to do so by a staff member.

I'd say go as primitive as possible.

You were having fun.

-Why is it spinning? -I don't know.

The ship's docked, so this should not be moving.

zak: I've been looking for us to investigate a ghost ship.

Like those ones they find

that've been out there for 50 years.

Aaron: There are real pirates out there now that --

I know. They'd probably take it.

That'd be part of the adventure though.

can also manipulate this homemade electroscope.

If there's static electricity in the air,

it will be drawn into this copper antenna.

It'll bypass this metal through this cork

and the two different pieces of aluminum foil

that are hanging there, because they're different type of metal,

they'll react to static electricity,

and they'll separate.

And so, in essence, what this is...

that somebody experiences something physical.

part of a spirit that you're seeing. Absolutely.

so we meet back up, and I decide for all three of us

to return to the first class cabin

where we first heard the little girl

Going inside of those cabins,

you felt like you should not be inside of those cabins.

That's the feeling that I got.

They don't let people there, right?

Zak: I begin to wonder if this little girl

We now decide to go into three separate cabins

to see what will happen next.

and I remember this just started feeling sad.

You just felt the energy of the guy.

When you're depressed, when you're alone,

when you're hurting, what do you need

to make you feel better? Somebody else

to talk you through it. Exactly.

Same thing with a spirit,

and that's what we started doing. Yeah.

Remember, the ovilus, to us, is like somebody's

trying and trying and trying to make contact.

They may regret the suicide they did just like this captain did.

So trying to figure all this out in that area

with the spirit present that we just mapped on sls

is helping that spirit move on.

You got to remember, we're not just investigating,

we're trying to make contact.

I begin reviewing my evp session,

and I'm blown away by a class-a voice I just captured.

He had a funeral at sea.

That's when you were relaying all the information to me

from the ovilus.

When you were piecing it all together.

is what he's trying to say.

this is when I started piecing it all together,

and I can just imagine that spirit is over there,

like, instead of just sad, he's like, "yes, yes,

this is it, that's right.

Finally, somebody understands."

yeah, and it's emotional, too.

He wants help moving on.

Say a prayer for him and -- I'm glad you did that, jay.

I just found an act of contrition prayer.

I don't know if maybe his spirit is still there.

That's what he wants you guys to do,

is to do this prayer of saying grace.

Right.

Jay is so instrumental at nerve center.

Yeah. You're investigating with us, but you're at nerve.

You feed us some research and you do that about a prayer.

The reason he's talking about his funeral

is it wasn't done right.

He needs this prayer said so that he can be freed from here

and not be a slave anymore.

And I think even that you saying that

through an electromagnetic field, using the radio wave...

above the ground, at the same height

Could this be his spirit finally moving on from this ship?

We feel as though we've been doing this for so long
