Our new portuguese smiles.
Cheese.

We lived in denver,
right in the city,

and while it was great

and I'd been there
most of my life,

it was growing really fast

and you could just feel
the vibration of the city

just getting more intense
and busy.

Never turn your back
on the ocean.
Right?

We were ready to say,
"let's have a big sale

and get rid of everything we own
and move to the beach."

we do not have kids,

which does make this move
a little bit easier.

Just the two of us.

What do you think this is?
Manmade maybe?

It's got to be a little bit
manmade for sure. Yes.

Kristian: There was always
something about each place

that we didn't
really exactly like,

and we figured
if we're gonna do this,

we need to make it
as ideal as possible.

The most beautiful setting
for frisbee ever.
That is true.

And we found portugal
just by doing some research,

and it kind of checked
all of our boxes

of everything
that we are looking for.

So, we decide we need
to come over here

and see what
it was about.

Narrator: Portugal is one of the
oldest countries in the world.

The algarve region is
a beach lover's paradise.

With over 150 beaches

spread along 125 miles of coast,

300 days of sunshine per year,

and a reputation for producing

some of the finest wines
in all of portugal.

Algarve is the perfect place

to relax and enjoy life.

I'm gonna get a farmer's tan,

like the city.

I've seen a lot of different
apartment buildings around.

But then I also really liked
the smaller villages

with the typical
portuguese-type houses.
Right.

A hut would be
totally fine with me

as long as we had the ability
to still walk to the beach.

If we could
actually see it,

that would be an extra bonus,
of course.

Now, how many bedrooms
do you think we'll need,

considering people
are gonna want to come see us?

Think minimum
of two bathrooms.

And bathrooms to go
along with it?

And I know we had

a giant kitchen in colorado
that we never used,

but it would be nice
to have something

that has a little
bit of space,

some newer appliances.

I think we would be safe
with around 1,200.

And we'll be
in good shape

because the weather's
always gorgeous

and we can walk everywhere
we want to go.

We can save on gas.

meet their agent

to check out
an apartment in burgau,

a relaxed fishing village

with a fantastic selection
of trendy bars and restaurants

and a stunning beach

surrounded by high rocky cliffs.

Alexandra: It has
quite a lot of people

coming here in summer

and people going

through the walks,
with the hiking trails.

It's a very nice village
here, too.

Alexandra: This apartment's
just two minutes walk

from the beach.
Oh, yeah.

And there is
a really nice hiking trail

here behind
the apartments...

Great.
...That goes directly
to the beach,

which is really nice.

This apartment has two bedrooms,
one bathroom,

and the price is
really good.

It's 950.

neighborhood.

It's close

your thoughts?

I do like the amount
of bedrooms and bathrooms

for when we do have people
come and visit us.

And I do think
the kitchen is a good --

good size.

There is a lot
of floor space

and especially
with this great room here,

but it seems a little bit
chopped up to me,

with different levels,

especially and being
right on the street.

However, we have
this gorgeous view.

That is true.

it's so fun to be having
portuguese wine in portugal.

Kristian: We own
a wine bar in denver.

The problem was having a bar
or a restaurant

is that you have to be there,
like, all the time.

Amy: We don't want
to fall back into the habit

of working 12 to 14
hours a day.

Ooh!

Kristian: Just peel it off.
It comes up really easy.

I'm a little bit nervous
about the little, tiny bones.

I haven't had
any problems...

...With any of mine.

I don't want to have to ask
for emergency assistance.

Mm.

First, we just kind of
want not do anything

for about a year

and just try and relax
a little bit.

I think we figure
that living over here

is gonna be different
than where we came from.

So that, in itself,
will be a job.

The culture is different.
The language is different.

kristian: We do think
we would probably like

to start our own business
over here someday,

maybe in the hospitality
industry,

just because it seems like
a lot of people do

come here
for vacation.

in western algarve,

the city of lagos is home

to several of the area's
most popular beaches,

while its historic old town

allows visitors to experience
portugal's history and culture.

I don't know if you know,
but the discovery times,

lagos was the capital
of portugal.

neighborhood.

And then everything updated

We could have this going by
quite a bit.

So it takes away from it

We were very active people
in colorado.

With the mountains there,
there's a lot of things to do.

But we feel coming

that there's a whole
new activities that we can do.

every single night

And while the townhouse

had a lot of square footage
and a great view,

I'm not so sure about it being
right on the busy street.

I did like the size of it.

The extra bedrooms were good
and the extra bathrooms.

So, if we went
with something smaller

like the rooftop patio place
or this apartment in lagos,

we're not gonna
have as much room.

But...

The city apartment
there in lagos,

it was the most updated,
of course.

Right.
So, that was really nice.

Yeah.
The kitchen had some nicer,
newer appliances.

We did like
the decor there.

And, of course, the swing
on that patio that you love --

that would be fun to be sitting
in every single night

or in the morning,
as well.
Right.

Then, of course,
the rooftop patio one

is not much you can say more
about that view from up there.

It was amazing.
I know.

Not only could we
see the ocean,

but the beach and the town.
Yeah.

It's the smallest
of the three.

So, we wouldn't be able to have
several visitors all at once.

But it does have the least
amount of amenities.
Right.

So, yeah, I guess what's
the most important thing to us

is what we've got
to figure out.
Right.

Being close to the beach,
being able to see the beach.

What do you think?

Well, I think that we could go
for a smaller place,

but being able
to hang out

on that rooftop patio
every single day

and look down on the ocean,
the beach, and the town,

that just makes my heart happy
to think about that.

So, rooftop patio
it is for you.

Seems like it, yes.
