This is more magnificent than I could have ever imagined.

destinations in the world.

Woman: This is unbelievable!

hey. Hey.

Our new portuguese smiles. Cheese.

We lived in denver, right in the city,

and while it was great

and I'd been there most of my life,

it was growing really fast

and you could just feel the vibration of the city

just getting more intense and busy.

Never turn your back on the ocean. Right?

We were ready to say, "let's have a big sale

and get rid of everything we own and move to the beach."

we do not have kids,

which does make this move a little bit easier.

Just the two of us.

What do you think this is? Manmade maybe?

It's got to be a little bit manmade for sure. Yes.

Kristian: There was always something about each place

that we didn't really exactly like,

and we figured if we're gonna do this,

we need to make it as ideal as possible.

The most beautiful setting for frisbee ever. That is true.

And we found portugal just by doing some research,

and it kind of checked all of our boxes

of everything that we are looking for.

So, we decide we need to come over here

and see what it was about.

Narrator: Portugal is one of the oldest countries in the world.

The algarve region is a beach lover's paradise.

With over 150 beaches

spread along 125 miles of coast,

300 days of sunshine per year,

and a reputation for producing

some of the finest wines in all of portugal.

Algarve is the perfect place

to relax and enjoy life.

Oh, my gosh! Look at this cave. Oh!

Will you look at the water in here? This is amazing.

Wow.

Look at all the different colors in the earth.

I'm gonna get a farmer's tan, though. [ chuckles ]

[ seagull squawks ] keep working on that tan.

kristian: I really do like the city.

I've seen a lot of different apartment buildings around.

But then I also really liked the smaller villages

with the typical portuguese-type houses. Right.

A hut would be totally fine with me

as long as we had the ability to still walk to the beach.

If we could actually see it,

that would be an extra bonus, of course.

Now, how many bedrooms do you think we'll need,

considering people are gonna want to come see us?

Think minimum of two bathrooms.

And bathrooms to go along with it?

And I know we had

a giant kitchen in colorado that we never used,

but it would be nice to have something

that has a little bit of space,

some newer appliances.

I think we would be safe with around 1,200.

And we'll be in good shape

because the weather's always gorgeous

and we can walk everywhere we want to go. That's right.

We can save on gas.

True. [ chuckles ] right.

Narrator: Amy and kristian meet their agent

to check out an apartment in burgau,

a relaxed fishing village

with a fantastic selection of trendy bars and restaurants

and a stunning beach

surrounded by high rocky cliffs.

Alexandra: It has quite a lot of people

coming here in summer

and people going

through the walks, with the hiking trails.

It's a very nice village here, too.

Alexandra: This apartment's just two minutes walk

from the beach. Oh, yeah.

And there is a really nice hiking trail

here behind the apartments...

Great. ...That goes directly to the beach,

which is really nice.

This apartment has two bedrooms, one bathroom,

and the price is really good.

It's 950. Ooh, I like that.

Great. So, it's just here on the left.

Well, if this was our place when my mom came to visit,

And no freezer.

So, no ice, no ice cream.

that's no good. And then you got no dishwasher.

I don't see an oven.

Oh, my gosh. No, storage.

There is no oven.

Okay. The spare bedroom. Alright.

What do you think that appliance is?

oh, the freezer.

It's the freezer.

Okay. Well, there is one. That's a plus.

Yeah, that is a plus. In the guest bedroom.

Yeah. Okay. Little odd.

The size is, you know... Yeah, it's decent.

Right. There is no closet in here, though.

Oh! That's right.

We'd have to maybe fashion some kind of...

A bench for people to put luggage on or something.

Yeah, like you would in a hotel room,

or something like that. Right.

And into what would be a master bedroom.

Okay. Not too bad of a size.

Right. I presume these are our closets.

So that's interesting.

I guess we could share.

Alright. The bathroom.

Double sinks.

Both: Yay.

A washing machine in here. Washing machine.

Yes. Which is okay, I would say so,

'cause I didn't know where else it would go,

and it seems, like you said, with the space,

it's okay.

I'm impressed with the size of this bathroom. I like it.

I'm really excited to see this patio.

This is even better than downstairs.

...Much larger than I was expecting.

I just got sucked into the view of the ocean,

and I didn't even notice the whole rest of the patio.

There's a nice table back there, grill.

That would be super fun to have people up here. Right.

The ocean is like a million tiny diamonds.

Yes. Oh, my god.

What about this view?

This is amazing. Wow.

It's so fantastic.

We just keep staring out at it.

And what about the apartment?

We think it might be a little small. Okay.

A few things missing, like a dishwasher,

and an oven. And closets.

Yeah. But it is hard to look past this point.

Yes, this is... This is the focal point.

We figured, "oh, we could stay up here

a lot of our time anyway. [ chuckling ] yeah, I know.

But if you still have the energy

to see something else that's a bit bigger.

I have a full house, a townhouse,

just not far from here,

in the main street there in burgau.

It'd be fun to walk through the town.

Narrator: Just a few blocks away,

alexandra brings amy and kristian to a townhouse

in a more central area of burgau.

we are now in the main streets of burgau.

That's so charming. It is.

It's a very charming neighborhood.

It's close to restaurants and bars.

It's a really nice village.

And here is the house.

You can see, it's really big.

It's big, yeah. It is.

Has three bedrooms and two bathrooms,

and it's just a hundred above what you wanted.

Which is really good. For that size,

that sounds pretty good. Right.

It is really huge.

and take in the rest of the house, right?

Yes. Now, how about this dishwasher?

Looks like it's pretty old.

This house is amazing. It just keeps going on and on.

It's dark tile -- I'm not sure about it.

It kind of makes it seem small, with the dark roof -- too much.

Bedroom one, huh? Alright.

The wood is being carried into this next room

with all these closets and such. -Some big closets.

This stone pole in the middle of the room

is kind of odd. Yeah.

Do you think that that's how they're trying

to mask a load bearing pole or something. Oh, yeah.

Oh, my goodness. I was like, I like the stone,

but I don't like it in the middle of the room.

Right. [ chuckles ]

oh, gosh. There's even a fish in it.

Oh, interesting.

That's awesome.

Next room.

Hey. Wow.

Ooh. It's, like, very sunny in here.

[ laughs ] that's a good word, yes.

And now look at this.

This seems like one big, giant...

How do I, like -- a headboard for the bed or something. Right.

But I mean, I guess they're making

good use of the space.

So, yeah, like, the whole base of the bed

is actually built in.

Really? Yeah.

Not like the box springs we're used to.

This is it. This is where your bed goes.

Yeah, no other option.

Alright. Now, I'm assuming these are the closets.

Let's see here. Yep. Nice big closet space.

I do like the baskets at the bottom

and the hanging. For the separation.

Yeah, that is nice. Yes.

The color, though, definitely has to go.

Yeah, wonder if we decided this would be the place

if we would be able to change that.

For sure. For sure.

-Alright. Bathroom. -The bathroom!

Here, we've got more of that yellow.

Yellow-orange. I guess you would call it yellow.

Do you notice that the whole shower system

is shaped like a fish? I do.

It's to match the tiles.

We have a theme going on here in this place.

I feel good about this bathroom.

Yeah, I do like the bathroom. Yep.

Alright. Let's head upstairs.

Ooh. Here we are.

I think I prefer the driftwood hardwood handrail

It's like going into a captain's quarters on a boat

or something like that. Yes!

This could actually be a master bedroom, I think, too.

Oh, another small bathroom.

So, you could actually make this into a master.

I think it's great. Yeah. Amazing.

well, what are your thoughts?

I do like the amount of bedrooms and bathrooms

for when we do have people come and visit us.

And I do think the kitchen is a good --

good size.

There is a lot of floor space

and especially with this great room here,

but it seems a little bit chopped up to me,

with different levels,

especially and being right on the street.

However, we have this gorgeous view.

That is true.

it's so fun to be having portuguese wine in portugal.

Kristian: We own a wine bar in denver.

The problem was having a bar or a restaurant

is that you have to be there, like, all the time.

Amy: We don't want to fall back into the habit

of working 12 to 14 hours a day.

Ooh!

Kristian: Just peel it off. It comes up really easy.

I'm a little bit nervous about the little, tiny bones.

I haven't had any problems...

Okay. ...With any of mine.

Okay.

I don't want to have to ask for emergency assistance.

Mm.

First, we just kind of want not do anything

for about a year

and just try and relax a little bit.

I think we figure that living over here

is gonna be different than where we came from.

So that, in itself, will be a job.

The culture is different. The language is different.

and the shrimp is [speaks portuguese].

I think so. [ laughs ]

kristian: We do think we would probably like

to start our own business over here someday,

maybe in the hospitality industry,

just because it seems like a lot of people do

come here for vacation.

the city of lagos is home

to several of the area's most popular beaches,

while its historic old town

allows visitors to experience portugal's history and culture.

I don't know if you know, but the discovery times,

lagos was the capital of portugal.

-Oh, wow. -Yeah.

The first settlers came from here.

so, this is a very safe neighborhood. Okay.

It's very central.

You can walk to lagos.

So you can see lagos there. Yeah.

And it's close to one

of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Alright.

And it's within your price range.

of this whole room, seeing into the kitchen.

I really like this lampshade. I don't know.

It has a tiki feel to it,

which, of course, is very beachy.

So, we have no view. It's a courtyard.

And then the neighbor's balcony. Balcony.

or get darker curtains. Right.

Constantly keep it shut, basically.

Well, I would say about this place

that this is my favorite part. Right.

This patio, this view, absolutely stunning. Yeah.

And then everything updated and new inside is beautiful.

I love the tile floor, the marble kitchen countertops.

Nice and open.

I agree with you on that. Right.

However...

We could have this going by quite a bit.

Cars driving by, people walking.

So it takes away from it a little bit, for sure. Right.

Yeah. Especially when we get into the summer,

it might be a little more noisy.

Oh, gosh, you're right.

So being this close to one

of the most beautiful beaches in the world...

Maybe we should go check it out. I think we should.

We were very active people in colorado.

With the mountains there, there's a lot of things to do.

But we feel coming to the ocean

that there's a whole new activities that we can do.

to be able to hang out with one another,

getting to know each other again

without all of the distractions.

Any regrets? Absolutely none.

for us to be outdoors doing

and enjoying this wonderful sunshine all the time.

Well, I definitely feel

like we've picked the right place

on this earth to settle down.

Well, I definitely think we've chosen

the right place on earth to settle.

This place is absolutely stunning.

Now we need to just figure out a place to live

in this gorgeous country.

I do like that all of them are close to this.

We could actually come out here every single night

and watch sunsets, if we wanted to.

Yes.

And while the townhouse

had a lot of square footage and a great view,

I'm not so sure about it being right on the busy street.

Okay. I did like the size of it.

The extra bedrooms were good and the extra bathrooms. Right.

So, if we went with something smaller

like the rooftop patio place or this apartment in lagos,

we're not gonna have as much room.

Right. But...

The city apartment there in lagos,

it was the most updated, of course.

Right. So, that was really nice.

Yeah. The kitchen had some nicer, newer appliances.

We did like the decor there.

And, of course, the swing on that patio that you love --

that would be fun to be sitting in every single night

or in the morning, as well. Right.

Then, of course, the rooftop patio one

is not much you can say more about that view from up there.

It was amazing. I know.

Not only could we see the ocean,

but the beach and the town. Yeah.

It's the smallest of the three.

So, we wouldn't be able to have several visitors all at once.

But it does have the least amount of amenities. Right.

So, yeah, I guess what's the most important thing to us

is what we've got to figure out. Right.

Being close to the beach, being able to see the beach.

What do you think?

Well, I think that we could go for a smaller place,

but being able to hang out

on that rooftop patio every single day

and look down on the ocean, the beach, and the town,

that just makes my heart happy to think about that.

So, rooftop patio it is for you.

Seems like it, yes. Alright.

Well, actually, I'm glad to hear you say that,

because I think that's what I would want for us, as well.

I love the slower pace of life,
