Last year the MUAs came in
and they really blew us away,

so this year I want to see
techniques that are just supreme.

I want that bar raised higher.

Val Garland has created looks
for the biggest names in music,

fashion and design. Average work
just won't cut it for me.

I want to see creativity.

I want to see art.

Britain's next make-up star.

It's so exciting.

Our remarkable, brilliant judges
will be making that decision.

Hi, guys.

For your first
professional assignment,

you have been booked to do the
make-up on JD's Christmas campaign.

What?

What we'll be looking for is
how you interpret a brief that

works for a brand identity.

If your work is good enough, it
will be seen by millions globally.

However, if you don't come up
to scratch, it won't be featured.

So, don't let us down.

No pressure!

Cool. So, that's
your first assignment.

Get your kits together
and get moving.

I did not expect that.
The pressure is on.

First impressions are everything

so I really want to just
give it my all.

I mean, I've got nerves
but I feel like they're good nerves.

I've got, like,
a little fire up my bum.

Ad campaigns demand
perfect technique

and make-up that complements the
clothes without overpowering them.

All while looking good
billboard-sized.

And, with over 700 stores
in 19 countries,

clients don't come much bigger
than this.

This is huge.
I mean, this is global.

This is a chance
for your make-up to be

seen by millions of people across
the world, but they need to listen

to the client and create the perfect

make-up that represents the brand.

It's the client's vision,

so if they want a red lip,
they want a red lip.

If they say no foundation,
they mean no foundation.

You have to follow the brief.

As well as impressing
Val and Dominic,

each week the MUAs will also
face a guest judge.

Zara, can we also maybe just
brush up his brows as well?

This week,
it's make-up artist Min Sandhu.

She's created ad campaigns for
the likes of Nike, Puma and Chanel.

Min, how are you?

Hi. Really lovely to see you.
How are you doing?

Hello. Guys, come round.

Thank you for being here.

The campaign for the brand
will be seen across the world,

so make no mistake - these shots
need to be up to standard.

Their brand identity is all
about healthy, fresh, glowing skin.

Flawless skin is
absolutely crucial today, guys.

It has to underpin each
and every one of your looks.

For this campaign,
we need to deliver two group shots,

so we're going to
split into two groups.

The first group -
you'll be adding flashes

and accents of Christmas gold.

The second group - you'll be doing
the same but with seasonal silver.

So, I guess that all makes sense,
right? Yeah.

Of course you're working
together on the group shot

but actually
you're judged individually,

and whoever impresses the most,

you'll get the opportunity to
assist Min when you're doing

additional photos for the campaign.

I need my models to be
ready on time,

so you'll have one hour 30 minutes

to complete your look.

Both teams of MUAs have been
allocated models that reflect

the brand's image -

healthy but street.

How are you? Chilling.

How are you? I'm good. Are you ready
to turn into a drag queen?

I'm joking!

You just sit there and look pretty.
That's all you've got to do.

The brand are looking for
healthy, fresh, glowing skin.

We have to remember that this is
a campaign for sports clothing.

We can't let the make-up
be a distraction to that.

I really want to protect the skin
and make sure it's looking great.

I mean, he's got amazing skin
anyway, so I don't need that much.

Cleansing, moisturising, priming
the skin is absolutely essential.

You've got good skin
and I'm jealous.

Look at me.
I look like a drag queen.

I suggest they give that
moisturiser a really good

massage into the skin.

It will really get
the blood circulating

and give it a clumpy feel.

Let's start with your skin, then.

Are you OK with me using my fingers
to apply a moisturiser? Cool.

They need to make the skin look
like skin and not look like make-up.

This is going to be just a bit more
than, like, a no make-up look.

You know what I mean? Like...

For Eve, working on an ad campaign
for a global company

is a long way from her day job.

When I was 14,
I got my first job in a salon

and I've been there ever since.

So, I'm doing nights out make-up,
hen dos and a lot of bridal.

The amount I do make-up

is probably a little bit sad.

I go to work, I do make-up all day,

and then I finish, I come home
and I do make-up all night.

Yeah, I probably do need to get out
a little bit more, actually!

My dream job would be to
have my own make-up brand.

Something bold and colourful

and no neutrals allowed.
Just all crazy colours.

I've always liked to use brushes
to apply moisturiser.

I absolutely love doing skin.

It's my favourite thing to do.

This is actually relaxing.

I like ironing as well. Do you?

I find it relaxing, yeah.
Oh, my God. I can't stand ironing.

I'm just living my life, really.
I'm not stressed.

It's definitely a lot less
nerve-racking once

you're actually doing something.

When you're just sitting thinking
about the brief, it's like, urgh!

But when you're actually doing it
it's like,

"Yeah, this is all right."

From when I was about 13 to about 17

I was in a not very nice place.

I wasn't happy at all. I just wanted
to be slim. I wanted to be blonde.

I wanted to be tanned.

I just wanted to be the exact
opposite of what I was, really.

I don't want to say,

"Make-up changed my life.
Oh, my God this, Oh, my God that."

It's just helped me emulate that
person that I know I am inside.

It's taken a long time to be like,

"This is you.
This is the skin you were given."

Now I feel happy and I feel
like a little ray of sunshine.

I've got a little mantra.
Before I'm awake properly,

I like to get myself
to the mirror real quick,

and I look in the mirror and I say,

"You're talented
and your brain is big."

Jake, how on earth do you work with
those nails? That's what I said.

How do you do it? I don't know.

I think because I've had them for so
long I'm just used to having them.

I've never stabbed anyone yet.

Once the skin is perfect,
the teams can move on to the second

part of the brief, adding
accents of festive gold or silver.

What is everyone thinking?
I did want to put a proper colour.

I don't really want to just
leave it dead silver. Yeah. Yeah.

So, maybe, like, pinks and purples?

And some blues? Yeah.

I was thinking of doing kind of like

a navy contour of his eyes

so I was going to do, like,

a little more of a dark eye feature
for him. Yeah.

For drag artist James,

creating bold make-up looks
hasn't always come naturally.

I was always an artistic kid,

but growing up as a closeted gay

country boy, I had to act

and be a certain way.

I was hiding and limiting myself

and I was always holding back from
doing what I really wanted to do.

Drag was the real
kick-start element for me.

I used to dress up in drag
in my bathroom from about the age

of 15, 16, and
that is something that I'm just

carrying on throughout
my adulthood as well.

I'm still very much
a country boy from Ireland,

but I've come a long way.

Just turn a little bit to
the left for me, and at an angle.

Like James, the whole silver
team are playing with colour.

I'm kind of using accents of purple.

I want it to look like

he's holographic under his skin.

I just want it to kind of pop

a little bit more
than what it actually is.

She's got amazing eyes anyway,

so the colour should just

enhance that a little bit.

Hannah is not only planning to
introduce blue to her silver look -

she's playing with textures, too.

I want to see if
I can frost the eyebrows

to come in with the silver -
like a fashion Jack Frost.

Do you know what? I could put it in
your moustache as well. Blue 'tache!

I'm going to give her
a little bit of a burgundy lip.

I still want to be
in keeping with the theme

but we want to be a bit different.

I have never done
a photo shoot before.

I've only really
done on-counter work.

I grew up in the middle of nowhere
next to Aberdeen.

There's not a lot going on.

I would sit in my room
and kind of do more elaborate looks

because I had more time,
and I wasn't good.

I think I only really got good

at make-up when I moved to Glasgow.

I got the job on a make-up counter

and you've got to do it to a certain
time and you've got to turn up

with really nice make-up, because
people are buying it off you.

Right now, my dream job is to just
be part of a team on a big TV show

or a big movie, and then I would
love to be able to go to the cinema

and then it's, like,
my name comes up in the credits.

I'm actually second-guessing
my look now.

I feel like the eyes are pretty

but I'm kind of scared that
it's, like, too full-on a make-up.

I've given him a really strong eye.

Do you want to have a look at it
and see where I've gone? OK.

I'm putting strong blue
colour on my model.

Ooh!

How are they getting on?

I'm a bit worried about how well

the silver group actually
understood the brief.

I mean, clearly,
I know nothing about this world,

but I feel like the brief
was pretty clear.

You said it's about gold and silver

and skin, skin, skin.

I'm worried about these
garish blues and pinks.

I don't know
if they're going to work.

While the silver group are using
off-brief colours and textures...

Can you just close your eyes
for me, please?

..the gold group are taking
a more restrained approach.

I didn't want to go...

like, super crazy.

As you can see,
it's quite minimalistic.

Mainly I'm focusing on the eyes.

What I'm doing is
I am bringing this into the hair.

He already had this kind of
graved into his hair

so I was like, "perfect".

The gold is on its way.

Yes, the gold.
That's when it gets exciting.

When we get the gold down
and see where it's going.

I'm just applying some of
the gold just on the eyes

because it will just make your eyes
look nice and blue.

Berny's relationship with make-up
began when he was 16.

When I was younger, I found it very
difficult to integrate with people.

Yeah, I didn't have
any friends in school.

I wouldn't have anyone
to hang out with,

so I'd be in the art room,
drawing, getting creative,

and I guess that's what kind of
inevitably got me into make-up.

Make-up, to me, means more than

just putting a bit of powder
on someone's face

and making someone look beautiful.

Make-up, for me,
is like painting on a canvas.

I take make-up very seriously

and I want to be a make-up artist
who's also the creative director -

because it's usually
the photographer or the stylist

that will have more of a say -

and I think it's about time the
make-up artist has more of a say.

Yeah, we're going for that whole
pixie ear look. There we go.

I am happy I've kept
my own unique touch to it,

but it also is in check
with all the other models.

I love a shiny highlighter -
as you can see.

because I think it was too much

I think it went well.

I was battling in my head, like, a
fair few times during the challenge,

but I've stuck to my guns and I'm
prepared for whatever comes my way.

But it doesn't matter
what the MUAs think.

It's how their looks
work on camera that will decide

whether they'll be used
in the campaign.

I'm feeling really confident.

I think it fitted the brand
and fitted the brief

and I still kept it my own.

I'm hoping that they will like it.

If Val ripped me apart, I think
I'd still be, like, super thankful

because, I mean, it's Val Garland.

She could literally, like,

spit on me and I'd be like,
"Thanks so much".

My first impression
of the gold group -

the standard's pretty high.

I love how all
the skin looks beautiful.

It looks fresh, it looks healthy.

I think it's so on point
with the brand as well.

Are you all feeling like
you've done enough to impress them?

I mean, it's the first assignment.

I think I found it quite hard
to, like, fit the brief.

I was really, really worried
about Keziah's model.

I think because of
the reflections of the scene,

it works photographically. Yeah.

In the flesh,
it's a bit scary, isn't it?

Yes.

For me, I think Ophelia nailed it.

She looks like
the girl that would wear that

and girls would aspire to be that.

It's tricky, though, isn't it?

Because you want to
sort of establish who you are

but it also has to be uniformed

because all the models are
going to be stood together.

As a group, I feel like
it did all go.

Eve's is outstanding.

That lightning bolt at the side
is so well done.

I kind of really like Jake's.

I like the skin, I like the lip.

Yeah, her skin looks gorgeous.

I think it's really
on brand, actually.

And I love what Berny's done.

I mean, she looks stunning.

The skin looks so... I just want to
stick my fingers in it. I know.

It just looks so beautiful.
It's so flawless.

Let's have a look at the silver,
shall we? Yeah.

Oh, gosh.

Shocking. Hannah, I mean...

It looks green.

I thought she was bleaching
his brows.

I mean, what the hell is that?

When you put silver in
someone's brows, it just

makes them look like Santa Claus.

That was my first male model ever.

And I'm disappointed.

I just think
the skin looks a bit flat.

I feel like all of our looks

complemented each other
really, really well.

I think the boys all were in line

and the girls all looked fabulous.

The male models were hella handsome.

With blue eyeshadow. I mean, really?

I kind of got lost in my own idea
of winter, nearly, and ice.

You did a blown-out blue eye?

Yeah, I added colour, basically,
onto, like, you know, his eyelid.

Why did he do blue?

Why? It's a silver section.

It's just not the brief.

Wrong place, wrong time. Yeah.

Wrong. Not following the brief.

Yep. So, Ashley's model...

My biggest problem with this is that

all you see in the group
is that pink lip.

Brandon's model. I think
he's created beautiful skin.

The adornment that's gone on top -
the silver accent - is so basic

and really uninspired.

I don't really think this group
have understood the brief.

I don't think it's going to
get used, this shot.

we really loved your looks,

and we felt that they work both
individually and as a group.

quite hit the brief and it wasn't
really in line with the brand's

identity, so I have decided to drop
that image from the campaign.

so hoping I can make something
out of these petals.

Jake's look is all about

how make-up helped him
learn to appreciate himself.

My look is basically, like,
blossoming into something,

so I wanted to have, like,
black and yellow flowers,

like, flowing across the face.

Ah!

I'm spraying my inside of my nail.

I'm just glueing my brows down
because I want to paint over them.

Keziah's look is inspired
by the mythical phoenix -

a bird she's always
identified with.

It's about how make-up and art

and creativity have really helped me
to grow in confidence.

I'm doing this face paint,

so I need to get rid of
all the texture.

James.

Hey, Stace. Hello, darling. How are

I feel like this is kind of like

a kick up the back arse

and it's kind of given me a fire
to just really go for it.

I've got to, like, keep that
in my head. Do you know what?

So many times you're in the red
chair, panic, panic, panic, actually

then you smash it and somebody else
has to take your space. Yeah.

I want to go forward
so there's no other way round it,

if I really want it,

I'm going to make sure that
I get out of this chair.

I think no-one's safe at this point

and for Val and Dom to say

that I was from
a very, very, very close call,

I think the only thing I can do
right now is just pretend

I am in that red chair
and I want to get out of it.

I really like using 3D effects
on my face to change

the shape of the structure
of my face.

If Hannah and James
can wow the judges

despite a 15-minute time penalty,
it will prove

they deserve to escape the Face-Off
and stay in the competition.

I am going to be using some putty

to change, like, the kind of bone
structure around my cheekbones

and my forehead, which is risky.

I know that it could go wrong
and it could look really shoddy,

but I've done it a lot at home

and I feel like I could probably
pull it off today.

A bit under pressure.

Even though Berny won
yesterday's assignment,

he could still end up
in the Face-Off

if he doesn't perform today.

So I'm just trying to get, like,
a nice, perfect square.

His look is inspired by
a mirror from his childhood,

which he'd gaze into,
dreaming of a creative future.

The idea of this look is to try

and make sure
it's kind of a bit symmetrical,

but I've got lovely big cheeks so
it looks like curves, so I'm just

trying to even it out as much
as I can, so I can get it perfect.

MUAs, you've had half an hour.

How have we already had
half an hour?

Time flies.

So I'm using, like, this little fan
brush to create texture in the look.

I've kind of done a look that,
rather than telling a story, just

kind of shows my personality.

It's not too neat,
it's messy, painted

and it's a little bit mad as well.

Is Hannah doing prosthetics?!

Are you mad?!

She's 15 minutes behind
everybody else and boom!

That could look amazing. Yeah.

Cos I love me some sci-fi. Me too.

And, you know, now she's doing it,
I can see how that is so her. Mm.

Empty Odin is like a persona that I
created where I could step into it

whenever I wanted to feel braver

or I wanted to feel like
I could handle any situation.

Hopefully they'll
get to see my personality.

I'm in that sixth gear,

so I'm just going straight
right now at that speed,

staying focused.

James's look is inspired
not just by his native Ireland

but also the Northern Lights
of the Arctic Circle.

So I lived in Lapland for
just under six months when I was 18

and it really was the start
of a creative journey for me

that's brought me even to this point
now, so this look is in homage

to a place that I really
personally relate to.

So, my look is just
ridiculously complicated.

I mean, it's Aberdeen
and Glasgow, so...

Like James, Ashley's look is
also about her two favourite places

and how she feels torn between them,

depicted with
artfully painted hands.

The look's a little bit like
when my niece tries to draw

buildings but it'll get better.

This is me baring all.

Shanice is executing a split-faced
look reflecting her confident,

glamorous personality and the more
vulnerable side that lies beneath.

So the black eye is a metaphor.

I've never actually been punched
in the face, luckily enough,

but it's speaking to
harder times in my life where

I feel like I have been punched.

Yesterday being one of them,
to be fair. Joking!

This looks wicked. Talk me
through what it is, what it means.

So, a lot of it here is going to be
to do with my past, so if you

picture your worst kid in your
school, I was literally that kid.

I was always getting into trouble,
always fighting.

I so can't imagine that!
I got excluded about 117 times.

But you're so mellow now. I know.

It's insane to think.

I was actually told
I was never going to be successful.

So I've made this as, kind of,
black-and-white as possible

as if someone's written my fate on
paper and then now I'm more creative

so I'm going to play with colour
on the other. Amazing!

Both vibes. I love the idea.

Right. Time to like,
do the actual stuff now, so...

OK, we're going to have dripping
silver there. That's all sound.

I feel like I've seen this a million

When I was younger I didn't really
have much confidence,

I was quite, like, shy and reserved.

And it's kind of about how

make-up and creativity
gave me that voice.

An ombre is a gradient of colour.

I will start with the darker colour

on the outer rim of the lip.

I will then blend to a lighter shade

and then in the centre of the lip

it's lighter again.

The perfect ombre will make
your lips look larger.
