I am 27 years old, and I am from Stockton, California.

I just left teaching high school English,

and I am now a counselor

at a local community college called Delta.

I did grow up in a neighborhood where,

like, drugs and gang violence were rampant.

My mom worked 15 different jobs

to make sure that I was provided for.

When I was four, my little sister was born.

I don't even think I understood what

being an older brother really meant at four years old.

I just knew that this little person was here.

My family very much insulated me

into this very loving household.

Then when I became a teenager, it became this anger.

And what I did was I let all that frustration out

through creativity.

Writing most certainly was an escape for me.

‐ They're all about originality right now, Brandon.

‐ And I got something for 'em.

‐ Go out there and make it happen, brother.

I do like my job,

but in terms of my passion, what I would love to do

is being able to turn my art into my full‐time work.

Hi. ‐ How are you?

What is your name? ‐ My name is Brandon Leake.

‐ Hi, Brandon Leake.

And where are you from, Brandon?

‐ I am from a small, little city

called Stockton, California.

‐ Stockton, California.

And what do you do for a living?

‐ Uh, for a living, I work at a high school and a college,

but I also run poetry workshops with youth in my city.

‐ Well, that's wonderful. ‐ Wow.

‐ So poetry, is that what you're gonna be doing tonight?

‐ Yes, I'm actually the first spoken word artist

that you guys are ever gonna have hit this stage,

so I'm super excited to bring poetry to y'all.

‐ Tell me because, uh,

I don't really understand poetry.

I'm gonna be honest with you.

‐ I'm a great intro for you. ‐ Okay.

‐ So tonight's poem, it's something you wrote?

‐ Oh, I only perform stuff that I write,

never be able to perform anything else.

‐ Well, and what is it‐‐ what is this one about?

‐ So tonight's poem is actually an ode to my sister.

‐ Are you close to your sister?

‐ Very much. She's here with me now.

‐ Oh, she's backstage?

‐ Kind of. [chuckles]

‐ Well, we already love you. Make us love your poem.

‐ Beautiful. I got you for that.

I have two facts for you.

One, I'm six feet tall.

And two,

love is the most vulnerable thing one will ever have.

And you must learn to hold onto it loosely

so when it leaves, it won't exit so painfully.

On July 14, 1996,

an angel was brought to this earth.

Her name; Danielle Marie Gibso,

but I only know her as Puff.

Her smile is as wide as the universe.

Her eyes, they glimmer like the stars.

She is my world, and my sister.

I, just four years old at the time,

learned what it meant to love selflessly,

for on days in which my strength was but knee‐high

seeing her smiling face would make my soul fly, but

on March 23, 1997, I've been ground bound

because she left earth to go back home amongst the stars,

right next to God, but I was left here

to manufacture wings out of tears and broken dreams.

Yet I'm still haunted by these nightmares 'cause

I have a really creative mind

and sometimes it designs these alternate realities

where she is still here, still alive

and all the things I wish we could've done

are played again, and again, and again.

And I'm tired of playing God 'cause I gotta come to terms

with the fact that my sister ain't never coming back.

And that's the cost of love,

caring for someone so much

that you can't imagine living life without them.

Staring at a grave like

"How about I trade my six feet for yours,"

but that's not real.

And I know I said earlier to hold onto love loosely

so when it leaves, it won't exit so painfully,

but if this pain

and these memories are all that I got left of you,

I won't never regret these scars

from just trying to hold onto you.

♪ Memories aren't what they used to be ♪

‐ My brother passed away the same year

that your sister passed away.

I can feel your pain. I know what this is.

I know what it is to have somebody taken

from you without you knowing.

But it was very beautiful for me.

‐ What an amazing tribute.

There's something very, very special about you.

‐ Thank you. ‐ Really.

This is a very difficult thing for me to judge.

I shouldn't be judging it.

I just want to compliment you on what you just did

because it was, uh, extraordinary.

‐ Well, it's amazing to me that on season 15,

it's the first time that we're hearing

somebody of spoken word.

There was something more raw in the way

it's like, singing, and talking,

and just being a human a capella.

No music, no nothing,

just a raw heart beating in front of us.

We feel your pain, we feel your love.

to do this.

I'm 31 years old, and I'm from North Carolina,

and I am an entertainer.

You know, I really like to make people feel something

with my performance.

Um, seeing my grandfather do it, you can really move people.

He was a Pentecostal preacher,

did this snake handling, the faith healing.

People were speaking in tongues,

and he was, you know, jumping up and down,

and everybody was singing with their hands in the air,

and it was a show.

‐ ♪ But if you try sometimes ♪

‐ At that point, I knew 100% that this is what I'm doing.

‐ ♪ You get what you need ♪

‐ When I was 17, I decide I'm gonna drop out,

move to New York City, and be a street performer.

‐ ♪ Whoo ♪

‐ You know, for a long time, I was really living

that struggling artist lifestyle.

It was just me and my case.

I never thought that I could one day be here.

♪ ♪

‐ Good evening. ‐ Where did he come from?

‐ And what is your name? ‐ My name is Brett.

‐ And where are you from, Brett?

‐ I'm from North Carolina.

‐ And what do you do in North Carolina?

‐ I like to entertain people, you know?

I come from a musical family.

My grandfather was an entertainer

and my dad grew up wanting to be a rock star.

And that's why I'm here to kind of live that dream for him.

‐ He didn't become a rock star? ‐ He's a cop.

‐ And why did you choose to come on "America's Got Talent"?

‐ I've gone as far as I can go.

All roads have led to this X.

for people experiencing homelessness in San Diego.

in my neighborhood.

I met musicians and singers, and I was like,

"Wow, we could put together a group and sing together."

And there's people who are in the choir.

They can't afford medicine, they can't afford rent,

so we help them out. ‐ Right.

‐ And through the money that we've raised,

we've helped people get off the street.

‐ Wow. ‐ Wow.

It really all started when I was three and a half.

‐ From then on, I loved singing and I just learned more songs.

My name is Vincent Marcus.

I'm from El Paso, Texas, and I do impressions.

Look at that, so you wanna be a star someday, kid?

I grew up in kind of a stereotypical family.

My dad was a police officer, my mom's a teacher.

I've been doing impersonations since I was very little.

In college, one of my friends told me,

"Hey, you should get on this app called Vine."

She's like, "Yeah, you'd be really good for it.

You do comedy and voices and impressions."

And I was like, "Okay."

Out of my way. I'm going to be late.

I started to build a following, and I have not stopped.

I've been doing it for six years.

But I've actually never done

a live performance...before.

[phone chimes]

‐ Hey, yo, what's up, Dad? ‐ Hey, son, how are you?

‐ I'm good. I'm a little stressed.

‐ I've been in law enforcement for 35 years,

and I'm more nervous for this moment.

Just go out there and have fun.

‐ Performing in front of a large audience like this,

it's something that I've wanted to do for the past six years,

but it was just super intimidating

going from social media, in my own room,

no judgments, multiple takes

versus going on the biggest stage in the world

with celebrity judges, a live audience,

and an audience at home.

‐ If I crash and burn and fail at this thing,

then everything I've been doing for six years‐‐

Right, let's get to know you first of all,

Archie, a little bit.

I, uh...

I was just incarcerated for 37 years

for somebody else's crime.

‐ Ooh.

‐ DNA freed me, uh‐‐

‐ Oh, wow. ‐ Oh, my God.

On the morning of December the 9th of 1982,

a 30‐year‐old white woman was raped and stabbed in her home.

[solemn music]

I was arrested on January the 4th.

I knew I was innocent. I didn't commit a crime.

But being a poor black kid,

I didn't have the economic ability

to fight the state of Louisiana.

At the trial,

none of the fingerprints at the scene matched mine.

Three people testified that I was at home,

but they wanted somebody to pay.

I was sentenced to life and 80 years

without the possibility of parole or probation.

I was sent to Angola State Penitentiary.

It was classified as the bloodiest prison.

♪ ♪

Days turned into weeks, into months, into years,

and into decades.

It's like a nightmare, you know?

When, you know, you're faced with dark times,

what I would do is I would pray and sing.

This is how I got peace.

You know, and when the Innocent Project took my case,

I just kept hope that they will prevail.

There was an order to, you know,

run the fingerprints in the database.

Within hours, they matched the prints

to, uh, a serial rapist.

After 37 years, I was released

on March the 21st, 2019.

‐ How does it feel right now

to be out, to be vindicated?

‐ Man, it's a feeling I'm still trying to grab.

I'm still trying to digest

the freedom that I have right now.

I watched "America's Got Talent" in prison,

and I would visualize myself being there.

I always desired to be on a stage like this.

And now I'm here.

Thank God.

I know it's my chance of a lifetime.
