How outstanding is this house, right? It's beautiful.

Jonathan: They just bought it, but from day one,

it was love at first sight.

As soon as we saw this house,

we just knew this where we would spend

the rest of our days with the girls.

-And the kids agree. -Yeah!

All right. I like the energy.

Jonathan: But it needs a lot of work to make it move-in ready.

-Whoa. -Ah!

I'm a master escape artist,

and I want to escape from this kitchen.

Drew: So they need us

to help them stay in the home they love.

I love how, out here,

you've got so much room to breathe.

So you've had this house now for a couple months.

You just took possession?

-Yep. -You haven't moved in?

No, not yet.

Outside, it actually looks like

it's been updated, it looks fresh.

Jr: When we saw the house, the first thing we thought was,

how outstanding is this house, right?

It's beautiful.

Inside, there's a lot of things we do like,

but, obviously, there's a lot of things that we want to update.

Yeah, we saw potential.

So, what actually made you pick this area and this house?

Jackie: So, it's close to the lake.

It's close to a beautiful conservation area and parks.

It's a great school district.

Jr: Both of us grew up in small towns,

and we wanted to have that feeling

of actually having our children grow up in,

you know, a small town but just outside the city. Yeah.

I'm guessing every time you turn around,

she gets bigger and bigger and bigger.

You're gonna need to have lots of room to run around.

Yeah!

All right. I like the energy.

Honestly, we didn't think we were ever gonna

be able have kids,

and then, luckily, after, you know, several years

and lots of heartache, we were able to have two.

We just had a second a couple weeks ago.

So, she's only a couple weeks old.

-Yeah, three weeks old, yes. -Oh, wow.

Well, congratulations. -Thank you.

Jr: Jackie and I have been married for 15 years.

We probably started trying to have children

after about seven, eight years of being married.

We didn't have a lot of success.

And like a lot of people, we went and got help.

After all those years of trying,

it turned out that we were pregnant with elsie.

Jackie: And we never imagined being a family of four,

but being a family of four now

is when we definitely needed the bigger home.

So, you're excited here?

Oh, yeah. I mean, as soon as we saw this house,

we just knew this is where we would spend

the rest of our days with the girls,

watching them grow up.

And, really, there's nothing to do on the outside,

so why don't we take a peek inside?

We'll just give the kids to grandma head on in.

Jr: Come on, els.

-Whoa! -Ah!

This is -- ah! Don't hit your head.

Why would you hang it right there?

Jr: Welcome to our home.

So, basically, you have a height restriction in your house

when people come in. Yeah.

What's your impression when you walk into this house?

Well, I mean, there is all the obvious negatives,

which is the carpet -- it's a little bit dark.

It's dated. The flooring's dated.

That color belongs in fruit and vegetables,

not on stairs.

But I could really envision brightening it up

and having the girls running down on christmas morning,

coming down the stairs,

or getting their photos taken before prom.

I kind of was looking into the future

and picturing all that.

Well, when your kids are as cute as your kids are,

you got to have have pictures.

The one thing I notice -- the smell,

the smoke smell in here, is overpowering.

I mean, there isn't even a lot of carpet in this room.

I bet you as we get into the rooms with carpet,

it's even worse. We need to really reno

this place just for our kids, right?

We have a 2-1/2-year-old.

We have the 3-week old.

So to come into this house with this smoke smell --

it's just not gonna work.

You do have a lot of space, which makes it very inviting.

And I like that there's a bonus space here, too,

which could be an office or a play area,

or guest room, actually.

Not exactly sure what we want to do with it yet.

How many bedrooms do you have upstairs?

There's four upstairs.

So you have one potential guest room up there.

And we might do a dual guest room/office.

-You're open to options? -Yes, yeah.

'cause you do have a lot of square footage

on the main floor.

Like this is great. It's big.

Do you love to entertain?

Jackie: Oh, yeah, we love to entertain.

We all have family and friends in from out of town,

and we host big holidays -- thanksgiving and christmas.

Room to entertain -- is that, like, serving hors d'oeuvres,

or you like to get out there?

Drew: Yeah.

-All of the above. -Good.

Jr: And we want to actually see that, like,

with our girls growing up and actually having

those family dinners with their grandparents,

with their aunts and uncles all here.

-Keep that tradition going. -Yeah, that would be great.

That's what we really want to do.

It sounds a lot like our family

because we love to host for the holidays.

We have a house full of people, but we love it.

We don't like just having christmas on our own.

At his house, the kitchen is completely open

to the dining and the entertaining area

so you feel like you're all part of the action.

Here, I can see it's pretty closed off.

Jr: Yeah, it definitely is.

Ha! This is just like I figured.

How would a family actually be able to fit in here?

-Oh, it's... -Crazy.

I'm gonna take a wild guess at what your biggest issue

is with the kitchen.

Jackie: We're not cooking a turkey in here.

You're not even cooking, like, a personal-pan pizza in here.

And I know exactly what these cabinets do.

-Oh, yeah. -Oh, wow.

Look at that, and it feels so much more open now.

This is great.

Just the thought of both of us trying to be in here

cooking together is not feasible.

It might not end well.

No, it's romantic.

We're forcing you to snuggle a little bit.

Jr: It's just not welcoming, and well really need

to open this up, open, open, open.

The floors in here are pretty grimy looking.

The appliances don't feel like they fit.

They stand out like a sore thumb.

And, again, much like the hardwood in the main area,

you got the yellow oak.

It's just -- yeah, I think we can do better.

And jonathan is a master

when it comes to the puzzle of the kitchen.

Awesome. I'm also a master escape artist,

and I want to escape from this kitchen.

oh, yeah, you have tons of --

whoa! Surprise, surprise.

Like, right in the middle of everything,

all of the sudden you've got your laundry room.

If you wanted, we could find another place

for your laundry room

and take over this space as a part of your kitchen.

That would give you tons of prep space

and enough storage for your growing family.

Jr: This could be a part of the kitchen or the family room.

I think that would make a lot more sense.

We found extra square footage.

Yeah.

Jonathan: Okay, so this is the family room.

It's big. I actually like that it's at the back of the house.

Anything you don't like?

-All of that. -Yeah?

It's a death trap. You could just see danger. Oh, yeah.

Drew: At least they rounded the corners.

-Yeah. -The space is a good space.

I'd like to see it brighter in here.

But I think if we put in some recessed lights,

redid the fireplace to be a real statement feature,

and then had our hardwood flow all the way through,

all of a sudden, this would feel like

the ultimate hangout space.

Mm-hmm. This is the space that we'll probably spend,

you know, 80% of our time together as a family.

It has to have a dual purpose,

both one for the children and then also one for us.

Jonathan: Upstairs, the house has four nice-sized bedrooms...

Floors are actually in good shape up here, which I like.

...Including a big master suite.

Another shade of purply-pink. -Wow.

And the family bathroom has been updated.

Country cozy. -Big shower.

So we'll focus our attention on the main floor.

We'll freshen up that front entry

and revamp the living, dining room,

kitchen, and family room.

Drew: I mean, I can see you guys spending a lot of time

in here when it's transformed.

But I can also see you spending a lot of time by the pool.

-Yes. -Oh, yes.

Drew: This is a great outdoor space.

Jonathan: Oh, this is awesome.

And the pool is in good shape?

-Yeah, it is. -How's the temperature.

Oh, don't do that.

This is just great. I mean, I could just see

the kids growing up and having so much fun.

The outdoor space, and with the pool

was really a key for us when we bought this place.

So, what is it you're thinking about spending on the reno?

We're probably looking about $165,000...

-Mm-hmm. -...Somewhere around there.

-Okay. -Yeah.

Just getting rid of that smoke smell,

changing out the flooring --

that alone is gonna have a huge impact.

But, yeah, you really need a big, beautiful kitchen.

Yeah. How would you define your style?

Probably more jackie for the style.

I kind of go along with jackie.

So, like, nice and bright but nothing too overly modern.

I love, like, a neutral palette,

nothing too crazy -- you know, flamingo pink or anything.

Okay, 'cause I'll actually take you to a house

to show you some ideas of what we could put into this place.

You know, it's hard for some people to picture

what their house could become. Yeah.

But walking through a home

that's already completely finished helps.

Jr: It really is a family house that we can just envision

elsie and silvie growing into this place

and being able to have a neighborhood

that they can call their own.

We're so excited to get this process going,

and we just can't wait to move in.

Jackie and jr have been through a lot

of ups and downs in the past 15 years,

and even though now they have the perfect family

with two sweet little girls,

the process of getting there was not easy.

So we want to make this process as painless as possible

and give them this the perfect home to raise their family in.

I think we're ready just to kind of get everything smashed

and just destroyed.

Sounds very aggressive.

Only the stuff that needs to be smashed.

So, first things first -- kitchen.

Jonathan: All right. So, do me a favor.

Think about all the times jr didn't put the dishes away.

Oh, look what I found,

some money to help with the reno.

I say we demo a wall.

Jonathan: While jackie and jr bust through from the kitchen to the hallway,

I'm tackling the wall to the dining room

to really see what we're working with.

'cause I came across a main waste stack

and two hvac pipes that we'll have to relocate,

you have nothing in here except some electrical.

That's easy.

Jonathan: Go for it. Right through.

Nice.

When we first came into this place, it was all closed in.

Now to actually see that line of sight right through...

Jackie: It's great to be able to see the front door.

Exactly what we're looking for.

Right now, we're living out of boxes,

and we have a newborn at home as well.

It's really good to see this whole process get going

and just one step closer to where we want to be.

Jonathan: Let's get rid of that family-room carpet.

That carpet was just full of smoke.

Just to be able to roll it up

and throw it out the door, I think really good.

And we also found $2 to help towards the reno,

jonathan: Jackie and jr bought a great house,

and they're ready to make some memories.

They dream of their girls running down the stairs

on christmas morning, big family dinners,

and a fireplace for family hangouts.

But before any of that can happen, a lot has to change.

drew: It's pretty clear that when it comes to design,

jr is happy to follow jackie's lead,

but they both want something cozy and family-friendly

with a little personality.

I think this house is gonna get them excited

about all the possibilities.

And I don't really know our style so much.

That's kind of jackie's thing.

I really just got to see it to know if I like it or not.

Jr: I like the flooring right off the bat here.

It's a wood tone, but it has a gray undertone to it,

which gives it a bit more of that modern feel.

We have even more space in this house,

so we could open it up and have beautiful sight lines.

Yeah. And there's still that room

at the front of the house that we're not sure what to do with.

You're okay for jonathan to do up a couple of options

for that room? It would be great to see,

'cause I think we're really struggling.

So, when you look at the furniture in this living space,

in here we have a lot of glass and metal.

Do you like that or not?

I prefer more wood and, like, comfy materials

yeah. We definitely need cozy and comfortable.

With the two girls, the two girls --

I do like the fireplace. I like the idea of that

being one of the central pieces of the room.

What would be nice is to have the tv really over top.

I think it makes one solid focal point

instead of having two split.

Absolutely, yeah.

And for the style of fireplace, this is linear.

Do you like something that's a bit more traditional shape,

or do you like linear? More traditional, for sure.

That one seems pretty modern to me.

Wow, this is nice. I love this countertop.

-Do you like that dark tone? -Yeah, I do.

Yeah, I like the idea of having, like,

the island right in there and just having the kids

sitting at the island. This is a nice big island.

This is nice, to be able to look right into the living room.

I really like the dark-gray cabinets.

Maybe something, like, a little warmer?

Is that what you were thinking?

Yeah. Exactly, yeah.

We want to make sure that, overall,

everything isn't dark, dark, dark, dark... Right.

...Even though it's gonna be a nice open space. Yeah.

So maybe what we could do for a backsplash

is a little bit lighter color.

I really love all the storage in here.

Everywhere you look, there's cupboards.

Now, I'm assuming you probably want something

a little bit more classic for your light fixtures as well.

Oh, yes, definitely, but I love the idea

of having the three fixtures over the island.

I like how the kitchen extends into the dining room.

I think this makes us really excited.

I'm just excited, yeah.

When we bought the house, we weren't sure exactly

what we were gonna do, and walking through here

and seeing the things that are possible...

-It was the right decision. -...It was the right decision.

Maybe it wasn't the best choice to, you know, renovate

and have the baby at the same time, but...

Well, I think it's all gonna work out for the best, though.

Drew: Jackie and jr want a family-friendly home

with warm tones and comfy furniture.

They love the fireplace

but are looking for something more traditional.

They want a large kitchen with breakfast-bar seating

for the kids.

Lots of cabinet storage is a must for these two avid cooks.

They also like the idea of going for a bold, dark color

in the cabinets and countertops.

And they're looking for ideas

on how to use their bonus front room,

but most importantly, an open floor plan

so they have enough room to host friends

and family from out of town.

A couple little surprises.

They want to freshen things up, but they're willing to go

a little more bold than I thought they would.

Let's start with over here, just with the backsplash.

So I actually thought this hex tile would look great.

And so they're okay with something that's

a little bit creamier?

'cause sometimes people want white, bright.

But they don't want white and bright.

In fact, for countertops, they want to go darker,

and for cabinets, they want to go darker.

Oh, wow.

And so they want to go with brass fixtures?

Not like that, but more like this.

It's almost the same. That's, like, a rose gold.

For paint color, they don't want to go light.

This is for the cabinets.

They like the shaker style, but they want to go dark.

I think if we're gonna do it, we got to go, like, bold.

Imagine the nice, beautiful

rose-gold hardware up against that.

I like that they're willing to make a statement.

Jonathan: Big kitchens are great for taking a chance

on a bold color for your cabinets

because you don't have to worry

about the space feeling closed in.

But I wouldn't go dark on all of the surfaces.

You still need to have some visual contrast,

so using a lighter tone on the floors

will keep the space feeling airy and bright.

I mean, only standing between jackie and jr

and their open-concept is you.

These walls have to come out. We're gonna prep it.

So when you're ready, these are coming out.

I don't want to start on a negative,

but I do have some bad news.

no, I got to say, you have a great house.

It turns out you don't have load-bearing walls here

where the laundry room is, so all of that can be removed.

-That sounds great. -I love that idea.

Jr: Love that, yep.

Do you want to jump in and hear a couple options?

-Yeah, let's do it. -Yes. For sure.

Option 1 is the more expensive of the two options.

Now that we have all that smoke-filled flooring out,

we can replace it with beautiful updated hardwood.

We'll transform this empty front living space

into a living room/dining room combination

with comfortable furniture

perfect for entertaining guests from out of town

or snuggling up for story time with the girls.

We'll add a big table,

big enough for casual family meals with the kids,

and there will be enough space to add additional tables

for hosting those large holiday dinners.

At the back of the house, we'll remove all the walls

and the awkward laundry room.

We'll create the kitchen of your dreams

with bold, dark cabinets and countertops,

statement hardware, and a beautiful backsplash.

You'll love cooking together

even more in a kitchen this glamorous.

We'll add a large peninsula

with additional storage and seating

where the kids can hang out or do homework

while mom and dad are cooking.

And finally, we'll transform the family room

into the ultimate hangout spot.

We'll update the old brick fireplace,

add tons of storage for toys,

and some comfy seating for family time.

I love the idea of the breakfast bar,

being able to, you know, be busy myself in the kitchen

and have everybody sitting up there and enjoying a meal.

And in addition, we would take that old office

and create a guest suite for family and friends

visiting overnight.

We'll move the doorway into the adjacent hallway

so guests are closer to the bathroom

and have a bit more privacy.

Then we'll add beautiful bedroom furniture,

storage, and cozy accents.

This will feel like a home away from home.

That would actually work out really well.

Yeah, with our friends and family coming out

from out of town... And parents coming in.

...That's something that we could really use.

We always think function first, function and flow,

and then we're gonna look at aesthetic.

But you will have a beautiful home that works for the family.

Wonderful.

So option 1 comes in at seven weeks and $165,000,

which is your max budget. Okay.

Yeah. Budget's obviously important. Yeah.

I mean, if we came in under, that would be great.

But we want to get everything that we're looking for as well,

so it's definitely something to consider. Yeah.

Instead of hauling out the blow-up mattress. Exactly.

I don't think you guys would miss that space either

because you still have a nice front room

over on the other side,

and back here it's gonna be wide open, beautiful flow.

Sounds really good.

But we'd love to hear option 2.

Option 2 gives you that same expanded kitchen,

the beautiful floors throughout,

the great family room, but instead of a guest room,

we'll keep the original layout of this front space

as an office.

We'll do a light renovation to freshen it up

with new flooring, updated lighting,

and a fresh coat of paint.

Then we'll add a stylish desk

for when you need to work from home,

but leave the space open for possibilities in the future.

And so not having to rework that room completely

would save you about 5 grand in your budget.

So it would be $160,000 in seven weeks.

Oh, $160,000, 5 grand less.

I love the idea of an extra guest room,

but maybe there might be something else in the future

we want to do with that room instead,

so it might be nice to keep our options open. Like a breakdancing room?

-Yeah, exactly. -Possibly.

It's never too late.

There's other projects we need to do down the road,

so do we want a room that we're not gonna use

unless people are over?

-Yeah. -Do we really need that?

So I feel like you guys are definitely leaning

in the same direction.

-I think so, right? -I think so, yeah.

I think we're gonna go with option 2. Option number 2.

Well, I will never come over and spend the night, then,

since I know there's not an extra room, but...

Jonathan: With the old drywall and flooring out,

the smoke smell is completely gone.

Jackie and jr are gonna be so happy.

It already feels like a different house.

But we still have a few walls up that we need to take out

before we can start creating the huge kitchen

that we have planned.

And now that we've relocated the laundry room,

we can get rid of these walls between the family room

and the kitchen.

[ drilling and banging ]

with all this new space, we now have more than enough room

to add the big peninsula with seating jackie really wanted.

And that was a high priority on their list --

a place where they can all hang out together

while mom and dad are busy in the kitchen.

Ugh!

Nice work. All of a sudden, it feels like a bigger kitchen.

-Nicely done. -All right.

jonathan: The windows and doors at the back of the house

have seen much better days,

so we're upgrading to high-efficiency versions.

I think we can just go with the reciprocating saw.

Plus, now that everything's bright and opened right up,

we don't need the small window that's left

over the laundry room.

Sometimes homeowners give me side eye

when I suggest eliminating a window,

but once you remove a couple of walls,

sometimes you're left with a window that isn't doing much,

and, here, getting rid of it makes way for a breakfast bar

and that extra storage and counter space

that this kitchen really needs.

But this window has other plans,

and it's not going without a fight.

Come on, muscles.

A lot of excess framing.

That was a lot of work for such a tiny window.

-All right. -House, do me a favor.

We're trying to make you look nicer,

so stop being so difficult.

Jonathan: Since we're removing all the interior walls

in the back area of the house

and creating a kitchen double the size of the old one,

we have to update the old electrical

and run new wiring to accommodate the new space.

-93 1/4? -93 -- yeah.

Give me a couple 93 1/4 and a couple 93 1/8.

Jackie and jr really want to open this place up,

and one of the walls that we want to remove

is the one that goes from the kitchen to the hallway.

It will create and open sight line from the front door.

But this wall is a supporting structure,

so we need to add a beam in here to get rid of it.

So drew and I are setting up a temp wall for the support

before we can get the new beam to go in.

Just having this section of wall gone

gives a slightly better flow, slightly better sight line.

So, that's what I was gonna ask you.

How far back are we coming?

Probably in about in line with this wall here.

[ banging and whirring ]

so, where else do we have to shore up?

Well, that wall over there.

The old dining-room wall is load-bearing and needs a beam.

And the biggest thing is we're gonna have to figure out

where all our mechanical's gonna go.

So these pipes that are coming down here,

this waste stack, comes from about halfway

through the ceiling over there,

so instead of coming this way,

we could take it to the outside wall.

Then there's already kind of a bulkhead there.

We can keep that, run it over,

and hide it behind our cabinets.

So, just tuck it in behind the pantry cabinets, and we're good.

jonathan: The last wall that I wanted to get out of here

has to be supported with joist hangers

off of our new beam that's going across.

Once I have this in, I can get this wall out of here,

and it's complete open-concept.

This is a tight squeeze up here.

Geno: Yeah.

One more, and then we're good.

Right on the double.

Let's take the wall out.

and last but not least... Boom. Okay.

Now we've got level floors, open sight lines.

We'll still have to fur this wall out

to accommodate our plumbing.

But we've got cabinetry all the way along here

on both sides, the peninsula that we'll put in here. Yep.

I mean, it is set up for entertaining.

It's a long, narrow space.

But I think the way we divide it up,

it's gonna look really, really good.

Jonathan: Since jackie and jr's home was built in the '70s,

it has textured ceilings in some of the rooms.

They're definitely outdated,

and it's just not gonna go with the new design.

There's a bunch of different ways

that you can get rid of popcorn ceiling.

Sometimes you can scrape it off.

This stuff is on there too good.

Sometimes you tear the whole ceiling down,

but with it usually comes all the insulation.

So we're gonna do another layer of drywall

just to make sure we can skim it and make it look perfect.

We can just board right over top of it

and butt it up to what we have here,

and our new crown will go right over it.

Yeah, totally. Yep, makes sense.

No sense in doing a bunch of demo

that we don't need to... For sure.

...As long as we make sure we hit our ceiling joists.

Got to hit those joists and screws.

So why don't we throw a couple boards up,

and we'll throw the ladder on that side.

Jonathan: We don't want to lose a bunch of ceiling height,

but the method we're going with is

applying 1/4-inch drywall.

It doesn't take a lot of time to install,

but you instantly get that smooth ceiling.

while the drywall is going up in the back of the house,

at the front of the house, we're patching and painting the walls

and giving this room a little tlc.

just a little color, make this room pop.

They don't know what to do with this room,

and now it will just be finished as a beautiful office.

Here's a couple weapons for you. Hmm.

Jonathan: I have built so many curved staircases in my day,

and it can cost tens of thousands of dollars

for all the custom millwork.

These stairs are in great shape. They're just a bad color.

So we'll sand it down, paint it out,

put a new runner in there,

and it will look like a million bucks.

I mean, it's a lot of surface area to do it all,

but I'm glad that we don't have to rebuild the stairs,

'cause to do a curved staircase this nice,

I mean, the millwork alone would be a fortune.

Expensive, yeah. And the time, too.

Exactly.

jonathan: Jackie and jr love this cozy family room

and dream of snuggling with the girls by the fire.

But for that to happen, we need to rework this fireplace,

starting with expanding the firebox.

With the size of the current firebox,

that limits the gas inserts I can put in there

because it's so small, so my hope is,

there needs to be another steel support across here.

I'm assuming it's within this thicker grout line.

If there is a steel support going all the way across,

then we can eliminate the inner firebox.

Yeah. So, basically, yeah, get rid of this layer of brick

and then keep this.

Before, this was the smoker room.

It had that dirty carpet.

It just felt dark overall. But now --

it's gonna be smokin'!

Yeah. It's gonna from smoking room

to smokin' room.

this hasn't been moved in a long time.

Jonathan: If there isn't a steel lintel in here,

then we may need to rebuild the firebox,

and that will take more money

and add more time to this project.

With the size of current firebox,

that limits the size of the gas inserts

I can put in there because it's so small.

So my hope is if that there is

a steel support going all the way across,

then we can eliminate the inner firebox.

Whoo! So we can pull this fire back, this one back,

and that will give us the maximized area.

and the window from the laundry room,

we had to patch the brick on the outside,

but all the brick on this house is from the '70s,

and we cannot get it anymore.

So the new brick has a slightly lower profile,

so we're gonna kind of blend that into the new brick

by chiseling down what's there.

If we chisel off, like, just a little bit all of a sudden,

that looks a heck of a lot more...

-Kind of feather it in, right? -Yeah.

So it's not so noticeable.

Yeah, I don't think we have to go too, too far.

You might want to say we're gonna chip away at it.

where all four of them can sit in here

and cuddle on the couch and enjoy it.

Once we get that, the peninsula, kitchen, everything in,

this is just gonna feel like the ultimate family spot.

So, what's the deal here?

'cause this is sticking out.

So, obviously, we don't want to be caulking, like,

a 1/2-inch gap or something like that

on the outside of the casing.

I think it will be okay 'cause we can also have

our taper sort of feather to it.

What about this beautiful idea?

What if we were to take a piece of this,

and then we have our trim-casing piece,

which is gonna sit to about, like, there.

So what if we cut a short piece of that in behind,

and then it will be nice and thick and solid.

Hey, I want to hear you get excited about my idea.

What a brilliant idea!

Because the frame of the new sliding door

is thicker than the original slider,

there is now a 1/2-inch gap between the wall

and where the new trim will sit.

Jonathan: So drew's idea is to use a 1/2-inch piece of wood

backing to beef up the thickness of the trim.

This will fill the gap and keep us from having

to build out the whole wall around the door

with drywall mud.

It's actually a great idea.

I'm saving our drywallers from having to do all the feathering.

is really starting to take shape.

The bold, dark cabinets and countertops

really make a statement.

I think jackie and jr will be very happy

they took a risk with this color palette.

to raise their adorable family.

They waited a very long time to have that family,

and now they want to make sure

that they have a home that fits the dream.

This space turned out great because a lot of times

it's just, like, that extra room.

This feels cozy and perfect for entertaining.

Yeah, it's such a dual-function room, too.

and having dinner, drinks at the same time.

with a budget of $160,000 and a short seven-week timeline.

The fates aligned, and we were able to stay

on budget and schedule.

and easy to expand if you have larger family dinners.

Jr: We weren't really looking at having, like,

a real, formal living room.

Like, with the kids and the way our life is,

it just -- we don't really need something like that.

To have this area... I think we'll use it. All the time.

So it's like a smooth matte, kind of.

And you said you have a lot of family that comes into town.

Well, this is the kind of space. You can expand your table.

You have all this entertaining room over here.

with the built-in drawer microwave

and the fridge.

Just to think of this -- have the kids sit around here.

Jonathan: Well, and this is how you get rid of that bowling alley feel,

by breaking it up with a peninsula.

This is, like, a chef's dream.

Jr: It's absolutely unbelievable.

Yeah, and also, now, we got rid of the smoker's room,

and we gave you this beautiful family room.

-Wow! -Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh.

-Look at the shelving. -Wow! This is gorgeous.

Jr: Like, it's super-functional as well,

even to have all this space in the cupboards and stuff as well.

Jackie: We can hide the toys. They're already here.

You have no idea how much fun we were having

with all those things.

The fireplace here -- to think about what it was before...

It was that clunky. It was that old brick.

Built in like this, with the shelving,

the tv up top, like, this is unbelievable.

You see the light coming in that window,

the light coming in this door.

It's just a big, wide-open, beautiful space.

We didn't want a place where, you know,

one of us is in one room, the kids are in the other.

Like, we're a really close family.

So many of us can gather here.

And even with our family from out of town

to be able to come in. They can all gather in here.

Jonathan: You guys deserve to have the house

exactly how you want to have the house.

It feels like us.

This is a house now that is ready to be

not just lived in -- it's ready to be loved in.

I honestly think that this is the kind of house
