Moore: This town looks
like the kind of place

where you wouldn't have
to lock your doors.

But there was
a sexual predator here

who took away that
sense of security.

All of my work
with law enforcement until now

has been working on murders,
usually from long ago.

But this case was different.

This was a serial rapist
with living victims.

I'm CeCe Moore.

For years,
genealogy was my hobby,

and then it became my career.
Soon, I realized

that the techniques I developed
to reunite families

could also be used
to identify killers.

Now my team and I

help the police hunt
violent criminals.

I'm a new kind of detective.

I decided to start
using my skills

to help law enforcement
identify violent criminals

in May 2018,

and this case was actually
one of the very first ones

that I was involved in.

There was a series of rapes
and sexual assaults

that happened between March 2006
and January 2008,

and that perpetrator
became known

as the Ramsey Street Rapist.

Reporter:
The Ramsey Street Rapist.

A string of assaults known
as the Ramsey Street rapes.

Six women attacked
in Fayetteville.

Woolverton: He was
coming into people's homes

or attacking them as they were
going about their business.

You feel like you can't be safe

just going about
your everyday life.

That's really
what terrifies people.

Berg: What we believe to be one
of the first attacks

happened in August of 2006.
We called her "The Runner."

It was about 4:00 or 5:00
in the morning.

Left her house like normal,
running down Ramsey Street.

The suspect ran at her,
grabbed her.

She described it as being hit
like a Mack truck.

He tackled her and raped her
on the side of the road

in the bushes,
for about 45 minutes.

The next reported attack
was six months later.

Berg: Female, home alone.

Suspect entered the residence
and sexually assaulted her.

Woolverton: In March of 2007,
there's another assault

in an apartment,
where somebody was sleeping.

In this case,
it was a 15‐year‐old.

What really stood out about
the Ramsey Street Rapist

was the brazenness
of his attacks.

In September of 2007,

officers responded to
another apartment complex

on the north end
of Ramsey Street.

Woolverton: She was
a college student, 21 years old.

He came in through
a sliding glass door.

Moore: Years later,

this victim posted an online
video describing her ordeal

to try and help the police
find her attacker.

Haschen:
I had one roommate at the time,

but she had a friend
staying that night,

and he said
that if I made any noise

or tried to get
anybody's attention

that the other two would get it.

So, basically, I went
into protective mode

just to keep him away
from those two.

The last attack
was January 26, 2008.

In all, there were six attacks.

Moore: And all of these
in such close proximity

that everybody's awareness
was heightened.

Berg: And that's what
we knew at the time,

that we had a serial rapist
up on Ramsey Street.

I mean, of course,
we were like,

"We'll find this guy.
What does he look like?"

But we couldn't even
get a sketch of him.

Stranger rape makes it
really, really difficult,

especially when the victims
can't give you

any more than a general
description of a suspect.

Woolverton:
Early 20s to early 30s.

Berg: White or Hispanic male.

Woolverton:
Between 5 foot, 8 inches tall
and 6 foot, 3 inches.

Smelly, oily.
Possibly a mechanic.

Close cut or shaven dark hair
and average to medium build.

That could be half the city.

Honestly, at that time,
everybody became a suspect.

The only thing they had

that really could help them
find this guy was DNA.

All you have is the victim.
Your victim is your crime scene.

No victim, no crime.
You got to do everything ‐‐

everything in your power
to support the victim.

Woolverton: Taking the rape kit
is a hugely invasive thing

that comes right after
a hugely invasive event.

You know,
somebody had been fighting

and begging for their lives
for 45 minutes,

and getting the victim
to consent

to go through the process
can be very difficult.

You're trying to protect
your crime scene,

but you also have
to protect them.

Moore: Thankfully, all six
victims reported their attacks

and consented to a rape kit.
The rape kit's critical

because the rape kit
is gonna find semen,

maybe some skin cells
from the suspect

that will have DNA in them that
can make or break the case.

Berg: We had the DNA.
We put it into CODIS,

or into the national
criminal database,

so it can be compared to
everybody else that's in CODIS.

Moore:
What's interesting about this
case is they did get a match,

but it was to a crime

where there was
another unknown perpetrator.

Woolverton: They had a match
to a Peeping Tom case

from Harnett County from 2004.

Evidence was found on the scene
that had DNA in it,

and they were able to connect
the cases together.

So, there's
that initial elation of

"We've got a match.
We found him," but then, "Oh, no.

This is another case where
we don't know who did it."

Berg:
We know that a lot of offenders
start peeping or exposing.

It becomes not enough to
look in somebody's room.

Now I have to go in the room.

Moore:
And so that just told them

he potentially started
as a peeping Tom

and then escalated to rape.

Woolverton: The police did a
press conference in early 2008

to bring attention
to the matter.

Berg: You can only canvass
so many times,

look for cameras so many times.

Well, now we need
the public's help.

Woolverton: We interviewed
people, and they recall

being very scared back then.

Berg: We were putting officers
in decoy situations

to see if they could
lure out an offender.

When people are scared,

they take measures
to protect themselves.

Berg: We had somebody walking
the same route as "The Runner."

We went to every peeping call,
every stranger call.

Woolverton:
There was a self‐defense class,

and it was packed ‐‐
there were 80 people there.

Berg:
They started a task force.

They brought in the FBI,
behavioral analysis.

Woolverton:
The Sheriff's office reported

a significant increase
in gun permits.

I imagine everyone
was holding their breath

just fearing the next one.

And then, just out of the blue,
they stopped.

Berg: Fayetteville is just
like any average city,

but it's a military town,
so it's very transient.

Woolverton:
We've got Fort Bragg.

We have approximately
10% of the Army here.

We get soldiers deployed
overseas all the time,

so they wondered if
their suspect from these cases

had left town.

Berg: We were just waiting
on a match of that DNA.

We really didn't have
a whole lot else to go on.

Woolverton: In 2014, I did
a profile of Kellie Berg

for The Fayetteville Observer,

and it was six years
since the last attack.

She could tell all these details
of every one of these cases.

I remember every single victim,
and I would call them.

About every six months,
I would call everybody.

"Is there anything new?"

"I don't have anything new,
but we're still swabbing people,

we're still following up
on leads."

If I had to swab
all of Fayetteville,

I was gonna swab
all of Fayetteville.

These cases just
touched me in a way

that none of the other ones did.

I could never put
those cases down.

They were officially
inactivated,

but I'd always felt like
I was working on them,

and, you know, if nothing else,

they were staring at me
across from over my desk.

Big, thick binders.
They were always there.

Woolverton: Years pass.
They had DNA, but no name.

They needed something that
could produce the name.

Moore:
When I start working a case like
this, it's impossible for me

not to harken back
to that time in my life

and what I was doing.
I was a new mom.

I had Nicky in 2005,

and these crimes started
in 2006.

And so it is kind of an odd
thing to work on these cases

that happened at a time

where I was not
as aware of violent crime.

Fast‐forward to 2018.

Now most of the cases
I work involve homicide.

But what's really interesting
is, this was my first case

where there were living
survivors waiting for answers.

Haschen:
I had a migraine that day,
so I fell asleep

with one of those, like,
squishy pillows on my face.

He grabbed the pillow and
grabbed me by the throat

at the same time.
I never saw his face.

Hearing the victim
in her own words

describe what she went through
makes it even more urgent to me.

He ruined a lot
of things for me.

I can hear it in her voice,
I can see it in her hands,

the effect it's had on her.
It really cements my resolve

to use my skills to help
law enforcement find answers.

If we can even save one person,
then I'm all‐in.

to criticism,

and I've certainly had
my fair share.

But I believe deeply in the work
that I do with law enforcement.

So, how did we get here?

How did we unlock the immense
power of genetic genealogy?

It didn't come from academia.

It didn't come from
traditional science.

I don't have a science degree.

I'm like, probably, most of you
in this room.

I'll say I felt pretty at home

because I'm coming from this
citizen‐scientist background

and they're coming from

a citizen‐detective‐type
background.

We should be able to help
identify hundreds or thousands

of violent perpetrators
over the coming years.

And so it was a gathering
of like‐minded people

who try to help find resolution

for these families
and the victims.

Meet and Greet, 1 and 2.

I wonder if one
of those is mine.

Before I did this for a living,
I was an actor.

I think
I'm in the right place...?

It is an extremely odd thing

that my earlier career's goal
was to become famous.

Oh, wow. I didn't even
think about signing.

I used to have
to sign "Barbie."

I used to work for Mattel, and
they'd dress me up as Barbie.

Then I left that
behind, happily...

which became my passion,
which became my job.

So, you worked that
Sophie Sergie case?

Yeah, that was my case.

It is just such
an odd turn of events

to see my earlier dreams
realized

in a very different way.

I guess it's fitting, in a way.

We can never predict
what the future holds,

and I'm a really good example
of that.

I'm really happy that
I decided to do it.

It was a wonderful event.

And I suspect we have a lot of
future genetic genealogists

who attended my talk there

that are gonna be looking
to learn much more about it.

I feel like I really
struck gold in this case

because the detective who took
over the investigation in 2015

happened to also be
a genealogy buff,

and we became great allies
working on this case.

Berg: When I turned
the cases over in 2015,

I just wanted
a different set of eyes,

and Lieutenant Somerindyke was

absolutely the right person
for it.

Somerindyke:
So, this case file was sitting

on a bookshelf in my office,
all 5,000 pages of it.

You know, to be honest with you,
at first, it intimidated me.

A lot of people put a lot
of hours in these cases,

and they did everything that
could possibly be done

with what was available
at the time.

Woolverton:
Lieutenant Somerindyke made
cold cases a priority,

and if there was any kind
of new technology

that might help him solve the
case, he would try to use it.

Somerindyke: DNA technology
is constantly emerging,

so there were some new things
out there

we thought were worth trying out
to maybe generate some leads.

Moore: Fayetteville police
sent a sample

of the perpetrator's DNA
to Parabon NanoLabs

for a new process
called phenotyping.

So, traditional forensic
DNA analysis treats DNA

as if the only information
it contained is identity.

It's like a fingerprint.
It's great for matching.

We treat DNA like
it's a blueprint.

It actually contains all
the information

that built that person,

and if we can
find the right parts,

we can figure out what that
person most likely looked like.

Somerindyke: I caught
a news story on

the DNA phenotyping
with the composites.

I think I saw that story
in late 2015.

It seemed like a pretty cool
thing to try.

Moore:
The Ramsey Street Rapist made
sure his victims didn't see him.

We didn't have sketches
of this perpetrator

until they used the DNA
to create a phenotype.

Greytak: When Fayetteville
reached out to us,

we analyzed
their crime scene DNA

to produce a composite image
of the suspect

based on predictions
of his eye color,

hair color, skin color,
ancestry.

Greytak: So, you're gonna
do eyes first? Technician: Yeah.

So, I guess strongest prediction
is most consistent for hazel.

We predicted
that his eye color

was almost certainly
not blue or green ‐‐

it was somewhere in that sort of
dark hazel or brown area ‐‐

and that he had fairly dark
hair, brown to black hair.

Almost certainly did not
have blond hair.

Armentrout: They're not meant
to be photo IDs.

They are meant
to allow someone

to exclude
90% of the population quickly.

If you think about it, the
investigators have to look at

so many potential suspects,
and this is a tool to help them

work more efficiently
against that list.

Somerindyke: The main thing
was to regenerate interest

in this case and hoping maybe
some of these characteristics ‐‐

you know, the eye color,
the hair color, the skin color,

the ancestry ‐‐ would maybe
jog somebody's memory.

Maybe back then, somebody knew
something, but now, you know,

they're 10 years older,
they're 10 years wiser.

We really hope they're
gonna come forward now

and do the right thing
and give us information we need

to solve these cases.

I was very confident and cocky
during that press conference.

You know, I guaranteed
an arrest.

I want you to get
a good look at these.

the Ramsey Street suspect

his last day of freedom.

I can only hope that he's
gonna see this telecast,

'cause my message to him is,
you need to be worried,

you need to be looking
over your shoulder,

'cause we're coming for you.

In my work, I'm isolated.

I'm working out of California,
at my laptop.

I don't always have
the opportunity to interact

with the other parties
involved in these cases.

So, this is Ramsey Street, huh?
Definitely not what I imagined.

Doesn't look even
slightly threatening.

Lots of businesses, people,
traffic, churches.

It's hard to imagine this was
the location of nightmares

for so many women.

It is very exciting to
meet the detectives

that had dedicated their careers
to solving these cold cases.

And Detective Somerindyke
was special

because he already had
some genealogy background.

He had already done
the phenotype with Parabon,

and he was really invested
in the process.

What did you think of that
when you saw it?

I mean, you've been looking
for him for a long time.

Yeah, yeah,
it's really interesting.

Kind of put a face
to the concept of the
Ramsey Street Rapist.

Somerindyke: December of 2016,
we put those composites out.

That did generate quite
a few leads,

but none of them panned out.

We never received
an offender hit.

It's just a waiting game.

Armentrout: And over the course
of the next year,

that's when genetic genealogy
came on to the scene.

The first time I heard of
the term "genetic genealogy"

was with
the Golden State Killer case.

Reporter: DNA recovered
from a double‐murder scene

here in Ventura
played a critical role

in cracking the cold case.

Somerindyke:
I got the news alert, and I
almost fell out of my chair

in my office, 'cause I knew
this was a sound methodology.

I consider myself a very,
very amateur genealogist,

but it really
just helped me.
It really helps.

Yeah, it really helped me,
you know, put it in perspective

and to visualize it
a little bit better.

You know, I've been working on
my family tree since college.

I didn't really get into
doing ancestry DNA

until my wife chose to do it
in December of 2017

in an effort to identify
her birth parents.

She accidentally found out as
an adult that she was adopted.

Oh, so they
hadn't told her.
They didn't tell her.

And she had always wondered
who she looked like,

and I think some dead relative
who died several years ago

I think is what
she was always told.
[ Laughing ] Yeah, right.

I'm sorry ‐‐ that's bad.

And you did it from
her DNA results?

Right, from the ancestry
DNA results.

And then I think
we researched

and actually found a picture
of her birth mother,

and we held it up to a picture
of her when she was about 20.

It's like, "Okay, that's her.
There's no doubt that's her."

So then I just
cold‐called her.

You did?
From my office one day.

I just laid it out to her,
and she said,

"Yeah, that's me," and was
willing to talk to my wife,

and, I mean, they talked for
three hours that night.

So you had just had your own
successful identification.

Yeah, and a week later,
the Golden State Killer case.

That is really interesting.
Yeah, it was
perfect timing.

We were doing genetic genealogy
and didn't realize it.

Hearing about how

Detective Somerindyke and his
wife had used genetic genealogy

to resolve a really core mystery
in their family is exciting.

He understands how powerful
genetic genealogy is.

Really, this case,
if you think about it,

started when we had a good nurse
who did her job

and got that DNA from
the crime scene,

you know,
or the victim's body.
That's a great point.

It all started
with the SANE nurse.

Moore:
If somebody had not collected
that physical evidence,

that DNA, I would never be
involved in these cases,

and I would never be able

to help identify
those perpetrators.

Do you know Liz Herring?
Yeah, absolutely.

If she hadn't
have collected that DNA,

we wouldn't
be here right now.

I'm excited to hear her
perspective on all this.

It's really important for me
to learn as much as I can

when I have the opportunity.
Every little clue helps.

Every additional piece of
information that I gain

helps me to get better
and better at this work.

Moore:
What exactly is a SANE?

So, SANE is
a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner.

You want somebody there
that's been trained

to collect that
forensic evidence.

I think we owe that
to the victims.

So, when a victim comes in,
what's your first goal?

We try to provide a very
quiet environment,

not to re‐victimize
that victim.

That's our primary focus.
Of course.

Once they feel some
safety and support,

we can carry on with their
medical forensic exam.

This is pretty much
the standard kit.

It's all boxed up
like this.
Right.

You're swabbing to
try to get semen?

Is that the main goal?

Even if it's
an attempted assault,

DNA has come such
a long way

that if she says "He grabbed me
here," we can collect touch DNA.

Wow.
Can you show me?

So, yeah, I'm gonna show you
on myself.
Okay.

So, we would actually put a very
small amount of sterile water,

and you're going to roll.
Oh.

And the reason
you're going to roll is,

you don't want to do this
and obliterate the DNA.

I didn't realize quite
how in‐depth it is.

The more injuries they have,
the more photographs I need,

the more swabs I need.

It may take me
a really long time.

You know,
it has to be done,

but it must be very difficult
for the victims.

They're tired, exhausted.

They just want to put
this behind them.

And for that five hours,
we're asking them

to continuously
tell us what happened

and we're collecting
evidence.

It is very difficult
for that victim, yes.

Moore: It's incredibly hard for
victims of sexual assault

to come forward, let alone speak
publicly about their ordeals.

But that is just what
the anonymous survivor

from the online video
decided to do.

Haschen: The day after,
I went back to school

to kind of tell my advisor
and all my teachers,

"Look," you know, "This is
happening. I'm withdrawing."

And...

I think I was still in shock
from the actual incident,

but more or less, like, okay,

this aspect of my life now has
kind of been taken from me.

Moore:
This is something where

a person's sense of security
has been invaded.

I don't think you would ever
have a true moment of peace

to not have the answers
as to who did this to you

and where they are right now.

For a long time, if I was out
and there was a big crowd

and I didn't know a lot
of the people there,

it was just a constant stress
and looking over my shoulder,

and I almost feel like there
was a pause button

put on my life when
all this happened.

So I've kind of been stuck.

Moore: I needed to be able to
help Detective Somerindyke

find this person, identify him,
and arrest him

so these women could
finally have some peace ‐‐

peace that they hadn't
had for years.

Looks like they picked
the wrong getaway driver.

They're going to be paying
for this for a long time.

They will, but with

Somerindyke: Parabon already
had our suspect DNA on hand,

so they were ready to do
the screening immediately.

So, two days after
the Golden State Killer arrests,

the Fayetteville
Police Department

was in the genetic
genealogy business.

Once we have the data, what we
do is upload it to GEDmatch.

GEDmatch takes our
unknown person's DNA

and compares it to all those
people in the database

who have opted in
to law enforcement matching,

and the amount of shared DNA

tells us approximately
how closely related they are.

Then we hand it off to CeCe, and
that's when she gets to work.

Moore: All right, we're in
uncharted waters here.

This is an ongoing court case.

That means that I cannot
go into the details.

So, we are going to have to
drive down Hypothetical Street.

Names will have to be changed,

but I still would like
to be able to explain

some of the foundational
concepts.

So, let's just say I had
10 promising matches,

but it turned out
that the 10 matches

were all super closely related
to each other,

which told me that they were
part of one genetic network.

I'm not building 10 different
family trees. I'm building one.

Losing my jacket.
So, let's say, hypothetically,

they shared enough DNA to be
first cousins once removed.

Those are good matches.

I shouldn't have to build
the family tree too far back

to find the common ancestors.

People assume that
I'm spending a lot of time

on GEDmatch, but I'm not.

GEDmatch is giving me some
of the puzzle pieces,

but I can't put them together
on GEDmatch.

I have to go elsewhere
to do that.

I have to go do
family tree building.

I have to look at newspaper
archives, census records,

birth records, death records,
obituaries, social media.

Shh. Don't tell anyone.

I'm looking
at their Facebook pages.

I find this particular
ancestral couple ‐‐

I'm gonna call them Fred ‐‐
made‐up name ‐‐ and Wanda.

Normally, I would share some
astounding historical facts

with you about Fred and Wanda.

[ Gasps ]
But there's Wanda!

Isn't she pretty?

You'll never know,
'cause I can't tell you.

So, you get the point ‐‐

theoretical, theoretical,
theoretical. Concepts are real.

This is what I do in my work
every single day.

Let's say Fred and Wanda
have five kids ‐‐

Jack, Sid, Yvonne,
Tony, and Flora.

You're probably wondering,
"Where did she come up

with the name Flora?"
That's gonna remain my secret.

They've got five kids, but
they are not the right age

to be our suspect.

So I've got to go forward
another generation.

So we've got Mary, Jen, Eva,
Tim, Sam, Erin, Ann, Louise.

Okay.

Do the matches
to the unknown suspect

share the right amount of DNA?

No. So we got to go another
generation forward.

It's just gonna kill me to have
to make up even more names.

All right, we have nine
possibilities at this level.

Bob, Chris, Ron, Jean, Anna,
Amber, Paige, Allison, and Jeff.

All made up.
Aren't I creative?

Are the people at this
generation level

at the right relationship
compared to the matches? Yes.

Are any of these people male?

Sorry, ladies.
You're out.

What does that leave us with?
Jeff... Ron... and Bob.

Are they the right age?

Ron was too young
at the time of the crime.

Same with Jeff.

Aha!
What do we have left? Bob.

Initially, I thought,

"Oh, well, that's great.
We went from nine to one.

Terrific."

But there were some
problems here.

I had a phenotyping prediction
that told me

the suspect was highly likely
to have brown eyes.

What color are Bob's eyes?

In all of his social media
photos, he was blue‐eyed Bob.

So when Parabon
does the phenotype,

they can't say 100%
this person has brown eyes,

so it's possible it's still Bob,

but I suspected there was
a misattributed parentage

in this part of the tree.

I've worked on
so many unknown parentage cases

in my career,

and so I'd say it's
an educated instinct

that made me doubt whether
my theoretical Bob

was actually related genetically
to this couple, Fred and Wanda.

But it wasn't something
that I could access

from my computer at home.

Fortunately,
with Detective Somerindyke,

I had someone who did have
some experience in genealogy.

Very quickly, he got
access to records

that proved this person
was not genetically related

to any of those matches.

He was related to that family
through adoption.

And that was so important

because it eliminated him
entirely.

But it meant we were out
of potential suspects.

All of this and this and this
and this is gone.

So I have to go back to
what I started with.

What I do know is that the
suspect has to be carrying

the ancestral DNA from Fred's
family and Wanda's family.

How else can I get
that right mix?

So where are we?
We've got Fred, we've got Wanda.

[ Sighs ] Let's see.

Families are complicated.

We very often see brothers
marrying sisters.

Not their own sisters ‐‐
two brothers from one family

marrying two sisters
from another family.

and it makes sense, right?
Because if Fred and Wanda marry,

their siblings are gonna
meet each other.

Let's call Fred's relative
George

and Wanda's relative Mathilda.
They decide to get married.

We've still got a mix
of Fred's ancestral DNA

and Wanda's ancestral DNA,
but it's a whole new family.

So who are George and Mathilda's
descendants?

To find who shares
the right amount of DNA

with the unknown suspect,

I have to come forward
the same number of generations.

And the great‐grandchildren
are Violet and Mike.

These people would share

approximately the right amount
of DNA with the matches.

Is our suspect a woman? No!
Violet's out.

That leaves us with one
single person left.

it led me right to someone
who was in the right place,

the right time,
the right gender, the right age,

and even the right eye color

to finally be
the Ramsey Street Rapist.

It was 2:00 a. m. Pacific Time,

and I wanted to get his name
to Detective Somerindyke

as fast as possible.

So, you know,
I'm an early riser.

I got up at 5:00 in the morning.

I had my to‐do list of things
that I was gonna go pull

from the State Vital Records
archives.

And so I sent...
I had an e‐mail from CeCe...

...in big letters that said
"Stop the presses"...
...said "Stop the presses.

Do not go to Raleigh.
Call me first."

I had given him another task

where he was gonna have
to drive hours away.

So I replied back to her,
"Okay, yeah,

when I get in at about 8:00,
I'll call you."

She immediately replied back...

"Call me!"
..."Call me now."

We finally had that conversation

where I was able to give him
the identity of the person

that I strongly believed
was his Ramsey Street Rapist.

CeCe gave me the name
Darold Wayne Bowden.

I could just tell by
the excitement in her voice

that this was gonna be the guy.

Moore: Of course, they
have to verify my findings,

but all of the evidence was
pointing in one direction ‐‐

to Harnett County,

right where that Peeping Tom
incident had occurred,

and squarely at him.

♪

Somerindyke: So, we gathered
some intel on him.

Darold Wayne Bowden
was 42 years old.

He lived in this area
his whole life.

I saw that he had a lot of minor
crimes, a lot of thefts.

Just a lot of interactions
with law enforcement,

in and out of trouble
his entire adult life.

Moore:
My focus is, obviously, on
the genetic genealogy evidence,

but once it leads to
a potential suspect,

I'm always looking to see
if that person makes sense.

Do they fit?

At least one of the victims had
said he smelled like motor oil.

He had social media,

and I could see that
he loved working on cars.

Somerindyke: The more
we looked into him, the more

everything kind of matched up,
it was all coming together.

And he was there ‐‐
he was living in the area

just right off of Ramsey Street,

5 miles north
of the city limits.

Moore: At this point, there's
nothing else I can do,

and I have to wait
for the detective

to either prove or
disprove my theory.

They are going to do that
traditional investigative work

to see if this person makes
sense, and ultimately,

does DNA that they collect match
their original genetic profile?

[ Police radio chatter ]

Somerindyke:
A plan was put together
to lawfully obtain his DNA.

I don't know exactly
what they did.

From what I've seen
in prior cases,

when you dump your trash,
your trash kind of becomes

open season for anybody
who wants to get it.

Somerindyke: We brought that DNA
that was lawfully obtained

from him
to the State Crime Lab,

where they did the one‐on‐one
comparison of his DNA

and the DNA on file collected
from the crime scenes.

The forensic biology supervisor
called me

with his staff
who worked on the case.

♪

They were excited to
tell me it was a match.

I mean, I admit I had a little
bit of a moment to myself

after that phone call.
[ Laughs ]

So, yeah,
that was a good feeling.

Darold Wayne Bowden had already
been arrested many times

and had many, many charges,

but they just never led
to DNA collection.

Somerindyke: He had a felony
conviction in the '90s,

spent a little bit of time
in prison,

but it was before
the state of North Carolina

mandated DNA collection
for felony.

Woolverton:
If they had been collecting DNA,

they might have found him
much sooner.

They might have found him
after the first one.

Somerindyke:
He barely avoided that DNA radar
for his entire life.

We were close so many times.

Just, the law wasn't
there to collect his DNA yet.

Moore:
He wasn't a soldier deployed
overseas, and he hadn't died.

In fact, he was nearby
and in plain sight.

He lived just a few miles away,
one turn off Ramsey Street.

Somerindyke: You have to get him
'cause until he's in handcuffs,

it's still an unsolved case,
as far as I'm concerned.

outside of our jurisdiction,

we did enlist the help of the
United States Marshals Service

and our Violent Criminal
Apprehension team.

They really put a lot of effort
into making sure he didn't flee.

On August 22nd of 2018,

the Fayetteville
Police Department

arrested Darold Wayne Bowden
as the Ramsey Street Rapist.

Berg: Lieutenant Somerindyke
called me and said, "We got him."

It was just like a sucker punch.

It was like, you're elated,
and then you're shocked,

and it's just everything
all at once.

Yeah, it was pretty exciting.
I looked at my cellphone,

and I had two missed calls
from Lieutenant Somerindyke,

and I call him,
and he answers the phone

and all he says is,
"We got him."

I dropped to my knees,
and I hadn't said anything yet,

and he said, "Do you realize
what I'm saying? We got him."

Reporter:
Breaking news happening
right now in Fayetteville.

Police make an arrest
in a series of attacks

that happened more
than a decade ago.

If you remember two years ago,
I was standing up here

guaranteeing we were gonna make
an arrest in this case.

I think some of you
were in the room then.

And so here we are ‐‐
we made an arrest.

Woolverton:
I mean, it was huge.

They had a big press conference

to announce they made
the arrest.

Reporter: Police conducted three
separate sting operations

involving Bowden to get his DNA

and then match it with the DNA
found at the crime scene.

You know, I think
for three years,

I've poured my heart and soul

in these and a lot
of our other cases, too.

I'm sorry. Just...

And, you know, I'm just glad
we got the guy finally.

Yeah, I think it just was
the excitement, the emotion,

the elation finally
setting in.

Yeah, it was like, "Man, damn.
Yeah, we did it," you know?

Prosecutor:
Your Honor, the defendant would
be a danger to the community.

He is alleged to have
committed...

Somerindyke: Darold Wayne Bowden
is currently being held

at the Cumberland County
Detention Center

on over 40 felony charges.

Woolverton: His bail
was nearly $19 million.

This looks like the cops
have a very strong case

against Darold Wayne Bowden.

Somerindyke: We anticipate it
going to trial.

Moore: When Kobi first
reached out to me,

it was a big surprise.
It hadn't even crossed my mind

that I would hear
from a survivor

on one of
the law enforcement cases

that I've been involved in.

[ Doorbell rings ]

Hi!
Hi!

It's so nice to see you.

Kobi is the first survivor
I have ever met,

and that is definitely unique.
How have you been feeling?

That same day after the arrest,
almost instantly, it was like

there was this weight that
I didn't really even realize

I'd been carrying around
for so long that just kind of

lifted off my shoulders.
Really?

Yeah.
Did you think
he'd ever be caught?

I didn't want to
say I lost hope,

but my hopes kind of
dwindled over the years.

You know, I do still
have those "What if"s.
Mm‐hmm.

Would I be married
and have kids by now?

What would have been
different

if none of this
would have happened?

Did it ever cross your mind not
to report it when it happened?

No.

You knew
you were going to?
Yeah.

Also, because I was studying
criminal justice at the time,

there was never any doubt
that I was gonna make sure

I could do whatever I could
to catch this guy.

She was so brave

that she not only protected
her roommate and friend,

but she also was going public
to help other survivors.

It's time for something
to change. It needs to happen.

Each interview I've done,
I'll get messages,

"I just wanted you to know
this happened to me,

and I'm happy
you came forward,

'cause not everybody
can do that."

And the thing is, for every
person you hear from,

there's many more out there that
you are not hearing from,

so your impact is much,
much larger

than I think
you even realize.

I do feel like I'm starting
to get that closure.

It's almost like
I got a reset button,

like I can start over, and now
I can kind of move forward

and become the person

that I should have been
a long time ago.

Somerindyke: With all
of our cold case victims,

they are always looking over
their shoulder, wondering,

"Is a suspect watching me?
Is a suspect following me?"

But, you know, I think we're
starting to see a shift now

with a lot of arrests in
the cold case community.

Now the suspects
are the ones saying,

"Are the police following me?
Are the police watching me?

Are the police gonna get me?"

And my answer to them now is
"Heck yeah, we are."

Moore:
When I was first interacting

with Detective Somerindyke
on this case,

I really had had very limited
exposure to law enforcement.

Although a year isn't very long,
I do feel a bit like a veteran

of investigative
genetic genealogy at this point.

A lot has transpired.

[ Chuckles ]

Kind of amazing.

Somerindyke: I really think
law enforcement

should get on board
with genetic genealogy.

It's a game changer.

Not just for cold cases ‐‐
for current cases, too.

We can be using it, putting
a lot of bad people in jail.
