This is the Scott Antique Markets in Atlanta.

It's a 360,000-square-foot event

that features 2,500 booths

packed full of very old and often very strange merchandise.

In other words, it's the perfect place for me

to spend a couple of days playing tricks

on unsuspecting shoppers.

-It looks like a safe. -I know.

It's really pretty, right?

Did they repurpose it, or is that the way it was?

This is the way we got it. 1817.

Okay. So, who's -- Who would use that chest?

A tailor or a...?

Yeah, this is a -- This is a bespoke tailoring trunk.

-Wow. -And it still functions, so...

-Okay. -That's amazing.

The gears -- we didn't change any of the gears out on it.

We did oil it. That's all we do.

-But it still does -- -Okay.

I don't know the settings on it,

but we have it set for a shirt.

So, when you say "set for a shirt," what does that mean?

Oh, have you not seen a bespoke tailoring trunk?

No. I have no idea what the heck you're talking about.

Sorry. Oh, I'll show it to you.

Yeah, I have some -- some fabrics here.

I'll show you how it works. Pick one of these fabrics.

You know, and I'm eyeballing it.

The fabric,

they would load from the front through the slit, like this.

The royalty would use these because it was --

It's like a faux pas to wear the same thing to...

Every night, they had to have different outfit...

Alert viewers have probably heard me

use the word "shenanigan" on the show before.

It's actually a subtle heads-up

to let our director and camera operators know

that magic is about to happen

so they don't miss a critical shot.

A Swiss clockmaker and a French tailor

teamed up together to make this.

That is the wildest thing I've ever seen.

The thread pulls down on a spiral spoke inside.

The main middle shaft is a brass piston...

Okay.

...that pulls up and down on its original bolts.

And then it'll make the, uh...

-Look at that. -Wait a minute. No.

-And then, uh... -No, no, no, no.

-That can't be. -It's a little baggy, I know.

-I'm sorry. -Oh, my God.

-No. -Lookit.

It's got buttons on it and everything!

Yeah, the buttons load in the button chamber,

if I could reach that.

-No, it just made the shirt. -He made the shirt.

Yeah, it's a bespoke tailoring trunk from 1817.

All he did was load fabric, cut off a thing of fabric from here,

loaded it in that little slit, tucked it behind there,

cranked the thing, and in about a minute, it made that.

-That is unbelievable! -It is.

And I think of the hours I spend on my sewing machine.

[ Laughs ]

Now, sometimes when we're filming in public, word gets out

that some kind of TV show is

As you'll discover in this never-before-seen clip,

that's exactly what happened at the antique market.

That is unbelievable.

-Will you make another one? -Yeah.

You know, we heard -- we heard that there was

a production crew or something here?

-That's crazy. -They what?

We heard there was a production crew here.

For what, I'm not sure.

Oh, they're shooting photography and a commercial.

-They need to know about you. -Oh, yeah.

This is the coolest -- Truly.

-That is just unfathomable. -Yeah.

And I'll show you what it does with --

-Yeah. -I don't know how it knows,

but if you put it upside down like this...

...it'll -- it just makes an adjustment.

The little feeder will grab and feel that it's already sewed,

so it won't try to resew it.

It knows it's just regular -- You gonna video?

-Can I? -Yeah, sure.

So, what are you going to do?

Wait a minute. I gotta get the video.

I'm gonna change the back from the two

to just the single plate.

-I gotcha. -Right? So, and that one --

And, again, I can make you a little instruction thing

if you want.

And I pinch it. Pinch it in and pull.

And there's a clip. You can feel that.

And that snaps onto that.

Close this little shenanigan here.

Then I go like that. And it'll grind it in.

[ Grinding ]

And it pulls it.

It's a little harder when the shirt's in there.

When it's already -- Yeah, with buttons.

[ Grinding stops, resumes ]

-Oh. -Wow.

That went weird. Hold on a second.

Oh, I'm sorry. No, I meant --

I made it -- That's my fault.

-Look at that, though. -That's my fault.

It just automatically knew -- I mean --

And that is so clean around the arm.

Well, yeah, but this obviously is ruined.

Yeah, you need the production people to come do this.

-Honestly. -To see it? Yeah.

And the whole thing is created with the Carbonaro Effect.

Well, antiques -- both, really.

You might be wondering why this guy

is drinking wine at the antique booth.

It's nonalcoholic wine.

See, sometimes when I have trouble

getting people to stop and chat,

I'll use free food and drink to entice them,

and it works every time.

Around the war, there was really beautiful art-deco type,

chrome and everything else.

Yeah. You know, I have this one here.

Yeah, it might be '60s.

I don't know why. I look at this, and I go, "Sixties."

You know, like the power of love and all that stuff.

I mean, this is just, like, your basic -- What year?

-'70s. -Really?

See, I was thinking '80s.

I think they got a little bit more streamlined

by the time you got to the '80s.

-I wouldn't know. -Yeah.

I never changed.

I've still got all the records that I've ever owned.

Yeah. Right. And you're not gonna change now.

-No. -Yeah, me neither.

This is all from my uncle's stuff.

Oh.

His prime interest was radio-frequency inventions.

-Oh. Ah. -A lot of the stuff he collects

is early inventions that utilize radio frequency.

-Right. -Anywhere from old radios --

you know, we let those go for a couple hundred bucks --

to lap slates, which -- these are still working.

-These are $3,500. -What are they?

This is like -- You know a child's slates

that they would use at school? Oh, yeah.

This prop was originally built

with brand-new chalkboards and shiny brass hinges.

Chad Sanborn, one of our magic team members,

went to work at it with a hammer and paint

to make it look like it was an antique.

-...battery here. -Well, what would it do?

Oh, well, it charges it up, right?

So it electrifies it so that you could use it

kind of like a computer, so the kids could --

You could write, you know, "5 + 2."

-Yeah. -And then...

It electrifies in there, and it vibrates the chalk,

and it would give an answer like a calculator.

So it was like an early -- really kind of --

You got to be careful. A little shock.

Kind of like an early computer.

You're saying, if you erase that

and you write "5 + 3" on here, it would be 8 inside?

You've not seen these before. You have never seen this before?

This is how they made up computers.

-What's your name? -Pat.

Pat, Michael. Nice to meet you.

-This is, uh... -It's crazy, right?

Here, Pat, we could --

It's not only crazy, but, uh...

Pat, what -- Let's look something up.

What do you want to look up?

Just erase the 7 and total something else.

Erase. There. Yeah.

It'll do anything that you hook up.

Just careful not to touch these two together.

And you can put, you know, like, simple math and stuff on it.

-"5 - 2." -Yeah.

And then it'll...

It answers it.

Yeah. Yeah. Very few of these still exist.

This is literally the earliest laptop.

This is literally the ea sentimental favorite

from season one.

I'll go on record as saying it's my favorite trick of all time.

It checks all the boxes of what I call the trifecta.

It's got a great reaction,

a great magic trick, and a great story.

Plus, I love working with animals...

or, in this case, bugs.

That's great.

Uh, okay. That's a good one, yeah.

I have some metal beetles if you want.

-Are you doing this yourself? -Yes, I was doing that myself.

Oh. Okay.

They're good for that one, if I had a metal one left.

Do I have a metal one? Yeah, one metal one.

[ Laughing ] What is that?

Oh, the builder beetles. Some of them move metal around.

Some of them move wood around.

-Really? -Yeah.

-You do a lot of home projects? -No, not really.

Oh, well, that's why. Yeah. A lot of people use those.

What do they do?

Yeah, they're from Alaska,

and they're used to building structures underground.

So they have a taste for metal and some for wood.

Here. I'll show you. Like, uh, here.

Oil workers in Alaska discovered these 'cause they have --

You know, like an ant builds an ant hill.

Yeah.

So, these guys, they work nocturnally.

I'll dump these out.

Yeah. That's a wood one. That's wood.

He went right for the wood.

This guy here. You see him?

He's gnawing, but he's a metal guy.

-Okay. -So he won't like the wood.

So, I'll cover these guys up.

I'll put them right here.

And the metal guy, he'll work in the dark, too.

So if you're doing a faucet, you know, a little piece of faucet.

I've got a bolt I can show you here.

You know, this one, it's screwed on here.

Uh-huh.

So, if I put the little metal guy next to it...

There he goes.

Now, imagine that nut's trapped behind a wall

and you can't reach it.

You can actually hear him go.

[ Metal scraping ] Do you hear him?

They go very quickly when it's dark.

-Are you serious? -Yeah. Yeah.

[ Scraping continues ]

And then when you don't hear the sound anymore...

Yeah, see, he undoes it.

-Yeah. -[ Laughs ]

Yeah, so, that's good for -- For something you can't reach,

you can -- Instead of getting a long tool,

you could just put him up in the wall, and he'll do that.

So, you know, you pop a little hole,

drop him in, he'll do the rest.

Yeah.

And these guys, they take a little bit longer,

but you can hear them -- Can you hear them?

Little bit of a chewing sound in there.

-Yeah. -Yeah.

So, they learn from the blueprint.

We let them sit on it,

and they're supposed to get to know what it is.

And they're used to walking on sticks, so they learn

to build their homes by the way they turn

and move their antennae.

So, I don't know if they had enough time to -- Yeah.

Oh, hell no.

Yeah, they're pretty good.

-Are you serious? -Yeah.

-Wait a minute. -Yeah.

-You're kidding me. -No.

Their saliva is, like, a natural adhesive,

almost like a spider web.

-Wow! -Yeah.

They're cheap, too, 'cause I don't think

the guy really realizes what he has right here.

-How much? -5 bucks, and you get

two wood builders and one metal builder.

You know?

Yeah, but how do I, um -- So I just leave them out?

Yeah, you can leave these guys in the wall, or they'll --

So, how do I find them when I'm ready for them?

Well, they're gonna get to work and do their thing.

So if you have a specific job, you would want to come in

and get some more for a specific job.

Otherwise, you would just let them live in the house

and, you know, find odd jobs.

-Oh, my goodness. -Yeah.

Oh, this pen even writes nice.

The inspiration for this trick

came when we were scouting this hardware store.

My magician friend David Regal and I

were walking down the lighting aisle,

and the light bulb went off.

Pun intended.

-...take this? -I don't think so.

No?

Yeah, I could see if my friends --

if any of my friends did, and then if not,

then I can bring it back?

Sure, sure, sure.

This is kind of an older bulb, isn't it?

-Well, this is a universal. -It's universal?

'Cause that just fits inside there, so don't do it

in the car, but it has 14 Watts for 15 inches.

Mm-hmm.

So, you know, if you get home and you realize it's too short,

you could twist and pull. No.

Yeah, and then it'll adapt to whatever lamp you want.

-That's amazing. -Yeah.

So, this way, people just only have to buy one bulb,

depending on... That's great.

-Yeah. -Uh...

And how do you get it back?

Think it has to go -- Well, let me give you --

I'll give it to you in this -- to take it home in this.

-Great. -This way, it's not --

'Cause that'll fit in there, right?

Yeah, and this might be -- This looks like the right size.

Can you carry it like this in the car?

-No. -You need to be careful,

because it is glass, but you can --

To make it easier to carry, you can get a little...

-[ Gasps ] -You see a little warp in there?

You can bend it all the way down.

Yeah, you can bend it back, but don't do it till you get home.

This way, you could drive away with it in your

car like this shape.

-They're already be a logistical nightmare.

We were fully exposed on a public sidewalk

and had to hide the cameras across a busy street,

which meant that traffic kept blocking the view.

Fortunately, stars aligned, we pulled it off,

and, as you're about to see,

Richard's reaction here made it all worth it.

The city just measured where the water pipes are,

and they're installing new hydrants.

We just have to mark where it's gonna be.

Okay.

And we're setting up the hydrant, and then

they're gonna come by.

It's, like, a whole process.

They're gonna have to drill all the way down through there...

Got you.

...and get the thing hooked up to the bottom of this

so that it'll be a functioning hydrant.

We don't have to do that part, luckily.

-That's a good thing. -Yeah. [ Laughs ]

So it's about right in this spot. Okay.

That looks like a good spot for it.

So, you've seen Richard cry out to the heavens,

but what you haven't seen is how he reacted when he found out

he was on a hidden-camera TV show...until now.

That's that thing that they're doing now.

They get the city work done so fast.

They use the Carbonaro Effect,

you know, to get things done really efficiently.

Our second day in Woodruff Park

turned out to be just as busy and complicated as the first.

This time, noise from some of the nearby fountains

ruined the audio on several attempts at this trick.

Fortunately, we got them all turned off

by the time Alexis showed up.

No, this is not it.

They're not just open, are they?

[ Grunts ] You can't get that open, can you?

No.

Let's see if one of these --

Um, they said there's keys inside,

not that that's gonna help anybody.

-Inside of here? -Yeah.

-But how do you... -Open.

...open it up?

Let me see. No. This is definitely not them.

And we can't just open it?

Together, can we open it?

I don't think...

He said there's one side that's, like, loose.

I feel like I can -- No.

-That's not opening up? -No.

Oh, my gosh. It's latched.

Back when we filmed this trick,

the first 13 episodes of the show had just aired,

and I was starting to get recognized in public.

It actually happened several times on this day.

Well, now I wouldn't be able to work my magic in a busy area

like this without wearing a full-on disguise.

And they're, like, on the corner of the desk.

Michael: I have the key here. It's dark.

Michael: That should just open this one.

Got it.

And then I looked up, and you were gone,

-No, that doesn't make sense. -You passed it to me.

-You passed me the key. -But how did I get inside here?

-I don't remember at all. -Wait a minute.

Hold on. Wait a minute. I'm, like, losing my mind.

I didn't have lunch today,

and now my brain is, like, schizing out.

We were...

-Both out here. -Yeah.

I just remember being next to you, and then

I remember it was dark, and I was handing you a key.

Exactly. That's all I remember.

-So, what the heck happened? -I have no idea.

And now I feel crazy.

I feel completely insane right now.
