until I stopped by and purchased some props for a magic trick.

That's when I realized this whole place

could be a gold mine for magic.

What does that do?

Oh, it's a de sheller for this kind of stuff,

so you can just pop it out.

Like that. So it pops out of the package.

Okay, how'd you do that? 'Cause this has...

Yeah.

This takes the pressure that's inside

as built-up pressure in there that holds it.

But how the heck did you...? [ Laughs ]

It's bumping it out. It's bumping it through.

It gives it like -- like you can feel it on your hand.

it de-shells it, so it's still closed.

we make up on this show are bizarre and/or useless.

But I would certainly buy one of these.

When a product answers a real need,

people will want to believe that it exists.

This trick was more complicated than it looks

because of all of the different phases --

the stapler, the peanut,

the De-Sheller all going into the package.

And as you're about to see in this never-before-seen clip,

I gave it another try to see

if I could pull it off for a second time.

Yeah, you just do like this,

and it pops them out like that.

So it pops it out. Pretty weird, right?

Yeah, it was. Try it on this.

I think it has to be plastic.

It has to be plastic to work.

Something that it has, like, a --

like vacuum-packed stuff.

Oh, yeah. The hard-shell stuff.

Huh. That's crazy.

That is. That's real cool.

I'd like to get about five of them.

You'd think so, right? Well,

every time you do this,

use a pocket knife, you get cut.

Yeah. It's, like, so weird.

There's no cuts in it. Yeah.

Imagine -- That would be funny.

Now, sometimes we base a trick on something

that people see every day but no one understands,

like this omni-present checkout-scanner thing.

Honestly, do you know how it works?

You know what I can do? Probably.

I'm going to just clean it.

Maybe some parts of it are dirty.

Oh, here, I'll just use this.

[ Beep ]

How did that happen?

I was just trying to clean off the front of the glass,

and then it, like...

You know how, like, the scanner light pops out?

So, scanned it when you held it and then it scanned it again.

Well, it didn't scan it through here.

No. It scanned it

when I pulled it out.

Yeah. How did you pull the light out?

Oh, it's just store policy, you know.

It's a safety issue for, like, returns.

Yeah. Pretty weird, right?

They don't want people going out in the parking

lot holding this.

Mm. 'Cause it looks like a gun.

So that people would be able to take the light out

to the parking lot and then do it.

Really? Yeah --

which makes sense.

I love drawing, and I have piles of sketchbooks

where I draw up new ideas for tricks.

I bought some of these sketchbooks

at this art-supply store

and realized it would be a great location for some magic.

You, at home.

Oh, that's that little training thing for origami.

Oh.

I think you're supposed to use the box as a guide.

I was going to do the heart.

Some guy came in and was showing me how it works.

Yeah. He didn't speak English.

But he gave me the directions, and it's just symbols,

but it's not like -- like, if you put --

He said you fold it in half and then half again.

So that it's in quarters, like that.

That's how you start it? You start them like that.

And then you balance it on this stick that's inside there.

Okay. That's cool.

Which is weird because they put the directions inside.

Exactly. You balance that like that...

and you close it.

So, you do it with the box closed?

Yeah. That's what he was showing me.

He would go -- 'cause that's up.

So you go up, then down, and push.

That's what those arrows are.

Yeah. And then, this is to go

around like that.

[ Giggles ]

And open it and...

Yeah.

You're kidding me. No.

Yeah. It's like... apparently like origami --

Well, it's simple shapes. It's not really complicated.

You just blew my mind. I don't know.

That is so cool.

Well, 'cause origami apparently means "one finger."

That's, like, mimicking the one finger.

So, all the moves,

all the folding can be done with one beam.

That's amazing. I love it.

Apparently, this was like for a kid's toy,

but it would be our version of training wheels on a bicycle.

"Dumb American" version. [ Laughs ]

So that matters, okay.

That's kind of how it was folded already.

Yeah. Okay.

And make a tight, tight crease.

And then balance it on top of the beam.

If you balance that on top of that --

Okay, go ahead, you do it. Close it.

All right. What am I going to make?

Close the...piece. Close the latch.

Okay, let me see if I can do this backwards.

You're going to go that way.

So just flip it? Mm-hmm.

Oh, wait, stop, wait! Hold on, it's this way.

'Cause I'm backwards.

[ Groans ] Okay.

Go that way. Whole box. Yep.

Back. Flip it one more over.

Now you're going to slide it fast one -- Yep. Good.

Flip it on its...top.

This way? Yep.

And now flip it back over very gently.

Yep. And open it.

Oh, I didn't do that gently.

You have, like, ninja moves

where you're like, "choo, choo, choo, choo."

Do you know what I think it did?

Remember when I said to go this way,

you would have been mirroring me.

So, it folded --

It didn't fold it, it cut it.

No, it folded the corners in to itself.

Sweetheart, look at it. Yeah.

But how did it reprint?

Well, you know, like, this paper is one color on one side

and one color on the other?

If you fold it in, you're not going to see

any of the white paper anymore.

It all gets folded up.

True, but...

It's like it reprinted.

I wonder if I can use this to buy something?

How are you?

I tried this calligraphy-themed trick

at a mall kiosk once before, and it didn't go very well.

The art-supply store was our shot at redemption,

and this time, we nailed it.

For, like, weddings and stuff,

you could write, like, little "reserved" table cards.

My writing's not very good.

Mine isn't, either.

Yeah, it just looks like basic writing.

It looks good.

Well, it's okay.

The pen makes it okay,

but this ink has a natural enzyme in it

that is like an active culture.

So, after you write with it, you just, you know,

you're supposed to wiggle it.

Yeah.

And it spreads through the paper.

Ah, nice. That's cool.

And it kind of swirls the edges on what you wrote.

So that it makes it look fancier.

Wow. Yeah.

That's really cool. Yeah.

You know how printer ink has live cultures inside of it?

Someone noticed that if you leave it on the

right kind of paper,

the little cultures will try and travel.

Ahh.

So they were like, "Let's take advantage of that."

You know, and make something artistic.

That's smart, yeah.

You can use any kind of paper that doesn't have

a coating on it...

and you just write whatever you want, like...

One day, our production office got a call out of the blue

from Nathan Deal, the governor of Georgia,

saying he was a huge fan of the show,

and if we ever needed anything, just ask.

So, we asked if we could borrow his mansion for a day.

Talk about Southern hospitality.

Uh, yeah, come on over here, I'll show you what we're doing.

We're just setting up a bunch of six-tops.

Okay.

Tonight's the 100-year anniversary of the fire...

Oh. ...of 1916.

Every year, they have an event

that honors the rebuilding of the mansion.

Gotcha. This is the hero table.

This is the table that we set up.

You know, the governor's wife perished in that fire.

Right.

So every year, they set up a table, nobody dines at it...

Right, it's set up. ...but it's honorary.

It's gonna have white linen and these special plates.

Come around here, I'll show you.

This is what makes tonight's event really special.

They're excited because in 100 years,

they've set up this table, but they actually just uncovered

some of the china from 1916.

It was found at an auction.

Oh, wow.

So that's what we're going to do that table with.

Okay. Really thrilled about it.

It's pretty, isn't it? Yeah.

And when we set that table, of course,

I'll give you gloves, too.

We have to be very careful. Okay.

So, these are going to get set over there --

I don't want to put down

until we bring these over to this table, here.

I wouldn't drape it yet. We'll do that last.

We always set that table last after the whole event is set up.

Sure. Okay.

and I will have you put those gloves on

and just wipe down those spoons.

Just try and polish them up a little bit more.

Yeah, no problem.

I'll bring this into the kitchen to get cleaned,

and I also have a pair of candlesticks

from the 1916 fire.

Oh, cool.

So we're going to bring those out.

We're not going to light them, obviously.

[ Laughs ]

That's what started the fire.

So, I'm going to get the candlesticks.

Wipe those down, put it with the rest

of the silverware, and then I'll be right back. Okay?

Usually, we avoid details that are too frightening

because people might run away,

and then there's nothing for you to watch.

But in this case, we decided to embrace the creepy backdrop,

and on two takes, people immediately ran from the room.

Oh! I didn't set that.

[ Laughs ]

It looks nice. That's good.

I turned around and saw it like that.

It couldn't have been 30 seconds.

When I stood here, you went in there.

Yeah.

And I thought maybe I was hallucinating.

I turned around and I was like, "How'd that table get set up?"

Oh, my God. 'Cause I remember

you saying

we're waiting till the very end.

Yeah, I said don't do it. I--

That is just so weird. [ Scoffs ]

[ Whispering ] I don't know.

'Kay, so put the candlestick on the --

[ Gasps ]

As you're about to see in this unaired clip,

sometimes people just aren't that attentive.

When I try the trick on a guy earlier in the day,

I waited nearly 10 minutes for him to notice the set table.

Finally, I gave up and pointed it out.

We're gonna -- Whoa!

You set the table so fast.

No, I didn't do that.

I really didn't set that. You set that, right?

No! I really didn't set that.

Was that not already like that?

Wait. Hold on a minute.

You're --

Yeah, that's the special table

that we're gonna set for them.

I just put the spoons down.

What? What are you saying?

You said you wanted me to polish the special spoons.

Totally, yeah, I know. I just didn't know

that you were gonna set the whole table.

Did someone come in and help you?

No.

Hold on.

All I've done since you left was polish those two spoons.

And the table... set itself?

That is really weird. Okay, let's just --

Here, put the candles on the table,

and we'll just forget that that happened.

'cause that's pretty eerie.

So, that required more effort for me

than I would've preferred, but stay tuned,

Tricks by themselves don't necessarily

have a lot of impact. They need context.

And the story of the anniversary, the wife,

the fire, they all work together to create a mood.

A creepy mood that has as much to do with her reaction

as the trick itself.

is something they've known about for a while.

And the thing is, they're not even lying.

They really believe it.
