This shoot took place on one of the rainiest days of the year.
Roads were flooded all around the location,
and we considered canceling because we didn't think
anybody would be out buying flowers.
Fortunately, a few brave souls made it to the shop,
and I got to magically brighten up their day.
Michael: How can I help you out?
I'm looking for a small, little centerpiece
where I can just put it on someone's desk at work.
Yeah. You know what's good?
We do these adorable little --
For desktops, it's really cute.
It's inside of, like, a coffee mug.
Okay.
You know, like, you choose one of these mugs,
and it's a bloom inside.
Oh, wow.
And, you know, this is them.
They're really cute. -Oh, that is cute.
-Isn't that great? -Oh, the roses are pretty too.
Roses are pretty, yeah.
Let's do the tulips then.
-You want to go tulips? -Yeah.
Okay, sure.
Now, I have a choice of, um, mug for you, too --
the colorful mug, or the... -Mm. I mean, the bird is cute.

So, we'll do tulips with the bird mug,
and I'm going to get that set up for you right here.
In fact, this is funny
because I was just mixing some of the mud.

So, that's the mud that you pour it in?
Yeah, you know, I like to keep the bottom of it --
-Oh. -I put in the bottom like this.
Okay? That just keeps it real fresh.
It provides the nutrients for it.

cut flowers that are only going to last a few days...

So I've got some tulip petal popper seeds here.

And, you know, what looks really nice with that
is hydrangea.
So I'm going to put some of that in with there.

Florida rustic thistle sprigs
cause that'll just give it a little something.

This is a U.V. lamp.

It's cutting off part of the spectrum
that the ozone layer usually filters out.
Our ozone layer protects us from UVC.
And so, frogs, amphibians, snakes,
they never get that light directly.
I just gave him a whole dose of that light,
and he absorbed it all.
Yeah, they're not supposed to get this big.

Now, we actually attempted this trick one time before,
but we ordered the wrong kind of ants,
and the magic team was viciously bitten during rehearsal.
This time around, we got it right.
Yeah, I'm trying to figure out this ant farm.
We've got these, like, Arti-Sand Ants.
They're, like, craft ants.
-Oh, so, they build things? -You know, I don't know.
I've been trying to figure out the directions.
It's, like, you know, like, these guys are inside here.
Mm-hmm.
So they've, like, tunneled out all their little, you know...
Mm-hmm. ...their little homes
and stuff.
The one to separate, they said, was the one
that had sort of a reddish tint.
Do you see -- -Why?
Do you see it kind of has reddish?
Mm-hmm.
And then, that that one is, like, an artist ant.
Here, I'm going to write, um...
What's your name? -Kellie.

Um, and the little red guy...

See how he's kinda walking over it?

And he communicates with the others with his antennae.

So, I gue-- Well, that must be what it is.
I guess this ant is the artisan ant
that communicates with the rest of the colony.

On this day, all of the checkout lanes were swamped,
so I had to man the technical-support counter,
which means when I wasn't filming,
I was dealing with actual technical issues.
I'm not a tech guy, but I did the best I could.
Michael: What's the problem?
Man: This iPad isn't responding at all.
Okay.
-Oh, it's not? -Is there any secret way
of getting it reactivated? Have you tried
plugging it in...
-No. -...to the wall?
Sometimes, you plug it in,
and you jog the power switch on and off.
You mean charging it?
Yeah. You don't have the charger here, do you?
No, I don't.
-Okay, um... -It's over in the hotel room.
It's really quite simple.
Let me write down the instructions for you.

And you try this at home, okay?
Yeah.
The first thing you want to do is always shut it off.

I'm supposed to be the technical-advance guy,

and it still doesn't write.

So we decided to embrace an "anything goes" philosophy
to the tricks that day.
This "never-ending pen" trick,
it's something I can perform at a moment's notice --
what I like to call a back-pocket trick.
Okay, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake.
Here, this is going.
See, that changes.

-It's a miracle. -That is the weirdest thing.
Okay. Let's get back
to the simple one.
Yeah, now I can write -- Now that I have a pencil...

and we'll show you the whole thing.

What is that machine?
Uh, I -- Well, I kind of try to be an inventor.
Now, as you might guess, this trick was originally slated
for our shoot at a dry-cleaning establishment.
We never got to go for it,
so I decided to bust this industrial laundry press out
in the middle of an electronics store. Why not?
...on accident, and you're like, "Oh, no"?
So, it was like, if clothes can do that,
why not, like, do it on purpose?
If you have something, and you don't like the size of it...
-Oh, really, and you want -- -...you could put -- Yeah.
It's working pretty good. I'll show you how it works.
It takes two seconds. -Yeah.
So, if you have a shirt, and you want to rejuvenate it --
-Yeah. -But when I was growing up,
I was always getting hand-me-downs from my brother.
So, you fold it just like you would,
you know, you were going to iron something on
like those old shirt presses. -Uh-huh.
And then, put it in here.
And it uses a cold steam, so it's reversing...
-Cold steam. -...the steaming process, yeah.
So I'll set this one for large, press it...
[ Machine hisses, beeps ]
So, like a dryer will shrink, with cold steam...
it'll resize it to...
-[Bleep] Woah. -Yeah.
So, then, it will un-shrink it.
How did you do that? Like, this is really --
There's cross-coils inside there
that will heat up at different spots
so it knows -- It's almost like tailoring.
You know? -Wow. That's cool.
Yeah, I'll show you again. The other one it has --
Well, the other one I'm trying to do --
This one's, like --
It's got to be worked out better --
is to try and take -- Oh, that's weird.
[ Chuckles ]
Um, I want to find a way to, like, not just change
the size of it
but also to find a way to alter the clothes.
You know, like, some people want alterations.
And if I set it -- I have it so that if i press
these two and that -- Good.
Okay, pretty good.
So, now I'm going to set the heat coil
so it's going to try and pattern burn.
-Uh-huh. -Okay? And I go down.
[ Machine beeps, hisses ]
[ Machines beeps ]
Waiting for the beep.
So, the coils will re-thread that.
And you see what happened there?
So, it burned it.
And it repurposes it, so now it can be, like --
You know, you can use them as underwear.
I mean, you could get a lot of money with that, you know?
-Do you really think so? -Uh-huh.
Are you serious?
[Laughs] It's too big for me, but I would use it.
Well, then, you could resize it.

I love working outdoors,
but a park isn't the easiest place to shoot magic tricks.
It's just not a location where people want to stop and chat
with a stranger who's trying to get their attention.
But I beat the odds
and got a couple of really great reactions.
Michael: Would you take a picture of me and the dog?
-All right. -All right.
I was hoping, actually to get, like, a running shot --
-You want it this way? -Uh, yeah.
Just with him running 'cause he's doing so good, right?
All right, I'm going to kind of run and see if he looks good.

It's like a little costume.
You put some food out, and they run to the food.
And believe me, when they're hungry,
they'll learn to run over to it.

Okay, I know this trick may look simple,
but there's more to it than meets the eye.
It took most of the day to set this up.
By the time we were filming, we were racing to beat the sunset.
Sending the kid back into the air,
that's an improvement we made
the second time we tried the trick.
It made things twice as difficult
but, in the end, twice as cool.
Where is he going?
I gave him the passport 'cause he's going to go to Canada.
What if he needs help? What if something is --
Well, he has, uh, he has, um, like a pad inside there,
you know, a tablet, so he can contact us.
Yeah.
It'll buzz my phone. It'll buzz my wife's phone.
Yeah. So?
So, like you said, if there's something wrong, he can --
Yeah, but he's flying around in the sky.
Right, yeah. Only on, like, good days like this.
That's the part that makes it crazy,
'cause if we schedule it, you still have to pay for it,
and if it's bad weather, they won't fly him.
And they just were able to regulate now
the propeller speed, you know, the way the air comes down,
the circulating air around it
that it keeps it kind of in its own safe little hub.
It's called the Carbonaro Effect.
