pretending to be an expert on the great outdoors

because growing up I didn't spend too much time

climbing the majestic mountains of Long Island.

I was more of mall guy. So I did my best.

the second compression cooler customers of the day.

and they helped us set up their actual customers.

I came up with the idea of sanitation bugs.

And it worked.

with finding giant millipedes in his shirt.

You could eat off of these bugs.

They're that clean.

That's like these survivalists

that drink their own [bleep]

Things never got that bad, thank God.

Well, that's why we have the bugs now.

The combination of bizarre products

and these customers that really want to believe

equals instant comedy.

And we broke a "Carbonaro Effect" record

and hit seven successful magic tricks filmed in one day.

Michael: Do you know when an awogomi is ripe?

It's something, like --

I don't know whether it's when it rattles

or when the ends are --

the ends of the little hairs on it are black

is when they'd be ripe. I don't know.

What do you do with it? Do you eat it?

Well, some people are eating them, you know,

because they're vegan

and they're trying to get away with eating them, but...

All right, so maybe I crossed the line with these ladies

when I mentioned that people eat the adorable awogomi.

On my next never-before-seen attempt at this trick,

I decided to downplay that particular fun fact.

But only a little.

And they split if you just squeeze it a little bit.

I loved filming in this hobby shop

because there were so many random,

interesting items everywhere

to build the tricks around.

The challenge, though, is at a hobby shop,

the customers know way more about their hobbies than I do,

so I had to really be on top of my BS game.

Michael: Hey, man. Can I ask you a question?

You ship stuff, yeah? Man: Uh-huh.

So you would know about shipping.

Okay.

Yeah, they're making us keep these separate.

Okay. If someone were

to buy the paint...

Right. ...would they be able

to ship it?

It depends.

Yeah, because we have to ID people now...

Yeah, it depends. ...for the ball.

So when somebody gets the paint...

The trick I was most excited to perform at the hobby shop

involved model trains,

and when this actual train enthusiast walked in,

I had to tread very carefully

on anything he might call me out on.

We do steam trains

for different people who have

some of the older model sets of trains.

Right. And we do that

right in-store.

Awesome. Yeah. You've seen --

You know, it's very hard and really expensive

to have your train set steamed if you need them --

you know, for sizing. Right.

Have you heard of that before?

No.

Oh, here. This is great.

We just got the new system. You'll love this.

What do you mean, sizing?

Oh, because, you know, the trains, they come,

and they're molded,

and they're molded in plastic.

Yeah.

And they're cast to a specific scale.

So what we do -- let me just, uh...

clean this out for a second.

We do this right in store.

We'll take a 1/8 scale,

and we'll resize them.

And it goes inside here.

And they go in there.

But it won't change the track size.

It doesn't change the track size.

That's the only problem.

Someone's got their tracks laid out already,

it's not gonna be able to change

the size of the tracks.

Right.

But it will change anything that's plastic.

Sure. How about that?

Yeah.

You know how plastic's made with two polymers.

There's a lower polymer and one on top,

and you pull it up, and the two combine together...

Right. ...to make plastic.

What they do with this

is they add silicone inside of it.

So this way...

[ Hisses ]

Here.

This way, most of the plastic products

have a flexibility.

So if someone has all their tracks set up

and they find that they've got really good trains

but they don't fit the tracks...

We just -- we'll just steam and resize them for them.

Are you kidding me?

Those two big things became that?

Yeah.

Just the plastic parts,

as long as they're all made in plastic.

And it happened that fast?

Yeah, it just steams it and pressurizes it,

because the plastic has a molecular flexibility,

so anything that's plastic...

Well, I learned something major today.

That's unbelievable. Yeah.

Yeah, they look great. They're, like, the same.

Even the wheel size, though. I mean...

That just blows my mind.

Yeah, and it also will shrink,

like, anything that has a plasticky --

like, I was just eating some little gummy bears here.

Anything that has a plastic flexibility to it...

That's got to be some pretty significant pressure.

This is one of those multi-part tricks

that we worked on

right up until the day we shot it.

The shrinking trains were cool but kind of low-key,

so we wanted to take the concept to another goofy level

and see if the guy still bought into it.

Now you're gonna have a little gummy pellet.

Yep, a little tiny gummy pellet, if we'll even see it.

But, uh...

[ Hisses ] Oh.

Well, that's better.

Oh, my gosh. Look at this.

Oh, yeah. It filled it.

What, is it full of water?

I think it just -- it just expanded it.

You could eat all that all day.

Yeah. I mean, anything that's plasticky.

God, that's unbelieva--

What if that thing blew up in your stomach

after you ate it?

Well, the machine is set for a certain size,

so there's only a certain amount

that the polymer can reduce its structure.

But how do you --

how do you gauge what size it's gonna be?

It's wild, right?

To be able to expand and contract.

The process is called the Carbonaro Effect.

It's also the name of

a hidden-camera magic TV show...
