My character is being indecisive, influenced and stimulated by others... and take the course of depravity.

He drops out from a member of society, but he grew up a little as a man.

There, maybe sympathy or something lovable side had been found in him.

Q-Any memorable episode? This time we had such scenes as snow fall, rain... all of these are done by Soen-Stuff.

A rain-shot at Kamakura was extremely cold.

Possibly viewers might have found us fat. Actually we wore wet suits inside.

A Director feared that we could not act due to this severe cold weather.

Episode 05 "Shocking Night"

What's the matter?

Why did you do that?!

Because you are checking time all the time.

You only care about the time for return.

I'm sorry... but you didn't have to throw my watch away.

I am Sakurai Sachiko. I play Ninomiya Mayu.

Q-What's your impression of Mayu? Mayu is not a an active girl in school,

she is a girl of isolationism.

By encountering a teacher,

she started showing her true feelings in front of him.

So with him, she laughs and gets angry.

If you could have found such daring and cute

side of Mayu in my acting, I would be very happy.

Q-What attracted you about in Teacher Hamura? Once in a while, he acts like a little boy, when an adult acts like that,

I felt that he still has warmness inside. That's where I liked him.

Kyomoto Masaki, I did Fujimura Tomoki, a.k.a Kyomoto Masaki, the Ultraman.

Q-How was Fujimura? I acted a bit abnormal high school teacher.

It was an honor. But everyone hated me a lot.

Surprisingly... you know that there are

many scenes such as Fujimura raping a student,

I heard that those things were really happening in life.

Also, I heard that one could not watch this program with

other family members... so he tapes the show and watch it later alone, kind of secret stash of tapes.

9th Episode " Beyond Forbidden Love"

Q-How did you feel about Nao? When I first read a script,

I honestly got perplexed.

Naoko-chan is very strong and forward-looking.

She's a fabulous girl as she can cheer up others even when she is totally down.

I felt it an honor to go through this acting before my graduation from high school.

Q-What scene got you emotionally moved? A scene when I must send off Teacher Shinjyo...

Akai Hidekazsu has warm and kind eyes and when I just stare at his eyes, tears come out naturally.

I'm Akai Hidekazu. I did a part of Shinjou Toru.

Spring of 1993, the drama High School Teacher that has giving various themes to viewers.

Q-How did you feel about Shinjou? Story-wise, it contains a lot, including incest, rape and homesexual love in it,

I think my character is the one that emits warmth and kindness and I am Akai Hidekazu, who acts Physical teacher, enough said.

The PE Teacher I act is in this drama,

Love to students, love to family, love to various things, if you watch it you will understand.

From episode 1 through 11, I'm sure you have watched,

I myself, watched these tapes over six, I mean 600 times,

and every time the part I got moved changes.

So I hope you do watch it from the beginning.

In the total 11 episodes, the scene I liked most is of course,

the scene with Mochida Maki, Nao, but most of all,

the scene with Teacher Sanada, so called Man's Friendships.

By just eye contact, we can understand each other.

Scenes showing friendships I like most.

I'm sure you shared the same emotion we had at those scenes.

I am a weirdo, so I have difficulty in making friends.

I thought I got one finally at this age.

Interview with producer Ito Kazuhiro July 2001

Q: How come you decided to make Koukou Kyoushi? - About 7 or 8 years ago, when Koukou Kyoushi (1993) begun,

Nojima-san was a well known screenwriter working with Fuji station.

He was already considered a hit maker.

However, at that time, the only TV station he worked with was Fuji TV.

I knew him personally since before.

One day, I received a call from Nojima-san. He told me he wanted to write a Friday drama.

Friday dramas air on TBS beginning at 10:00 p.m.

He said he had been watching Friday dramas such as

Fuzoroi no Ringotachi and Omoide Zukuri by Yamada Taichi and has been fan of them.

Fuji and TBS has very different drama styles, don't they?

What he wants to write right now is more of TBS style.

Um... a drama with social issues and heavy topics, that's what he wanted to make.

Of course, he was the hit maker so our team agreed right away.

When we asked him "What should we make?", he said he wanted to write the story of a female student falling in love with a teacher.

That's how it all begun.

Q: How did the story develop and how was it decided? - What I can remember is...

Before the script was written, I spoke to Nojima-san about this project.

He said he wanted a plot where the heroine is a victim of incest and falls in love with a teacher.

Originally, I told him I didn't want it in the script.

Just too disgusting and instinctively, I can't take it.

Then, Nojima-san told me that this is a Greek myth. There is such a story in a Greek myth, about incest.

The actual scenes will not be disgusting.

The scenes will suggest it taking place, but the act between father and daughter won't be in the script.

Without showing the actual scene, you can still see her pain and trauma.

In the beginning, we needed time to understand each other for that.

However, Nojima-san's wish to portray the Greek myth was very convincing.

So, we said let's go in that direction and got started on episode one.

When I read the script, I thought it was a really good story.

It gave me a chill.

Each character was well-written and the story was great.

Most of all, it felt very clean, almost a transparent image.

So when I read the first episode, I agreed with his ideas.

Even though incest has dark image, maybe we can portray differently.

After that, creating the story with Nojima-san became really fun.

Normally for TV dramas, you only need about 4 or 5 stories before you start shooting.

Since we were having so much fun, the meeting was going well and Nojima-san started writing with incredible speed.

So before we realized it, the scripts were done before shooting begun.

With that, actors and actress were able to get the whole picture.

Of course it helped with acting tremendously, most of all, made it easy to learn the characters.

It's very rare for a TV drama to have the entire script ready before filming begins.

I believe that was one of the reasons this drama became of such a high quality.

Q: How was the cast decided? - The cast is very new.

I mean, if you really want to get high, ratings, you should use someone popular.

But back then, I was still new so I wanted to bring new faces in. So we decided to cast actors and actresses not too known for TV dramas.

We brought Sanada-san as a teacher, back then Sanada-san was rarely on TV, he was mostly in movies.

So having Sanada-san as a main character was very new.

As a teacher with a naive and childlike personality, a man that never grew up. That type of feeling was felt from him.

He wasn't on TV much so that's how we decided on him.

Regarding Sakurai-kun, she was new, though she appeared in some dramas, she wasn't that known.

Before we started shooting, we wanted to know how high school students were like, so Nojima-san and I went to interview some.

There were gals (gyaru), not as much as today but still they were acting like that.

In the end, we decided to not make our character like that.

We wanted her to be more orthodox, the old fashion type of girl.

Then, when we met Sakurai-kun, she was very orthodox. Her face is beautiful and she doesn't have the characteristics of a gal.

Very quiet, that really matched our image of Mayu. The old fashion like image was the biggest reason why we choose her.

We felt a sense of old fashion teen with a little mysteriousness from her.

The other teachers, both Akai-san and Kyoumoto-san aren't much on TV.

Of course, they were well known. Those three teachers presence, were very interesting together in the drama.

It may sound like I'm patting myself the back, but it was very new, the cast wasn't chosen for good ratings.

Since the script was done so early on, I as a producer was able to understand each character well.

So I was able to choose the actors and actresses who matched the characters well.

Q: Who came up the idea to use Morita Douji for theme song? - Back then, the normal pattern was to use current hit music or new music.

While I was having a meeting with Nojima-san, somehow we began talking of old days.

I had memory of a song by Morita Douji, that was used in a play when I was in collage.

Nojima-kun also had memories with the song, when he was in high school, he heard it live.

That dark depressing song. We both had memories with having to do with it.

But we never planned to use it as a theme song. We wanted to listen to it, but couldn't find it. It was out of production.

So I contacted the record company and told them it may become a theme song.

It was kind of a lie, but I asked them to make a copy for me. They made one for Nojima-san and one for me.

I listened to it and it was really good. So we though it may work as a theme song... that's how happened.

Nowadays people use old songs as theme songs, but back then it was unheard of, I do it often.

There is a transparency and sadness to Morita Douji-san's songs

and weakness, Koukou Kyoushi is like that too, it's about the human weakness.

Kindness and transparency behind the weakness, is what we are creating.

But weakness will be in forefront.

By accepting the weakness, we accept the human weakness. That's why we created this drama.

Morita-san's song refers to things such as frustrations and setbacks.

So was it was perfect to use as our human weakness reference.

Q: What was your favorite scene from the drama? - Koukou Kyoushi's plot was Shakespeare like

there are many clever parts and some parts are breaking taboos.

But my favorite scene is actually a very innocent scene.

For example, the kiss scene, there isn't any scene that has a real kiss.

All of them are indirect, out of them

The "shadow kiss" scene in the Biology room. That's the one I like the most.

What are you doing?

Next scene I liked was... Let's see... When they finally spent the night together.

They spent the night at an old inn, in the Shonan beach area.

In the morning, they got on the train. I liked the morning scene too.

This was the a last scene of that episode.

Sanada-san was yawning and Mayu was playing a little trick on him.

It was a well directed scene, the interaction between them.

The train comes in so naturally and the scene ends. That's when Morita Douji's song begins.

Only in this episode "G-senjou ni Hitori" (Alone on the G-line) was used as train comes in to the station.

When the two of them were standing there, the music matched really well to that scene.

I really liked that scene.

So, a real kiss is fine, really sweet, but it feels like Fuji TV's style.

I didn't want to use that.

Nojima-san writes differently, when he's working on a drama for Fuji or TBS.

From the beginning, we decided to not use real kisses in the kiss scenes.

So all of them was indirect kisses.

A little old, for example with the kiss with glass in between or a kiss on the coffee cup that the teacher used.

All of them, were no actual kiss.

That was... Um... I felt a writer's intention, for screenwriter, a real kiss would have been much easier to portray.

For viewers it would have been exciting too.

However, you have to come up with many different ideas without using real kisses.

That really showed Nojima Shinji's creativity.

That was done so well too. I'm not sure if we ever can exceed that.

It was so perfect, I want to surpass Koukou Kyoushi, but it can't be done easily...

I feel that I can't ever surpass that...
