Until a few decades ago,
Karnataka state didn't exist.

It was called the Kingdom of Mysuru.

During the British rule, despite speaking in Kannada,

we were being administered by outsiders.

The people of Huballi-Karnataka were under the Bombay Presidency

and Marathi was the spoken language.

The Hyderabad-Karnataka region were being ruled by the Nizam.

The Kannada-speaking folk of Dakshina Kannada

were being ruled by the Tamil-speaking
authorities of the Madras Presidency.

However, in Mysuru people were fortunate
to be ruled by the Kannada-speaking Wodeyars.

This is when a spark ignited amongst all
the Kannadigas outside the Mysuru region.

Urdu, Tamil and Marathi languages
are being forcibly thrust upon us

and we are thus losing our original identity was
the common refrain that was being heard everywhere.

All Kannadigas decided to unite and
fight to build a separate Karnataka state.

Many greats like Kakkillaya Aluru Venkata Raya,
VK Gokak, Kuvempu

also put up a strong fight for the sake of Kannada.

On November 1, 1973,

during the tenure of the
then chief minister Devaraj Urs,

the state of Mysuru became
the state of Karnataka.

Kannada and Karnataka were
unified on this momentous day.

Kannadigas and the spirit of Kannada
was thus conserved.

It is often said that history repeats.

In Karnataka, too history
seems to be repeating itself.

Non Kannada languages are once
again being forced on locals.

Outsiders are gaining prominence in the state.

The fragrance of Kannada is
slowly fading away in this scenario.

There seems to be an ugrent need for the
return of the greats to rewrite history.

People are shying away from singing praises
of Karnataka and speaking in Kannada.
