Need, misery, and illness
have set in for landlord Matter.

"A perscription that expensive,
doctor! I have no more money, do I?"

"Walk to the pharmacy,
my child, and fetch medicine."

"Tell your father, that I can't
give him medicine without money."

"You've heared it now,
we lend you nothing more."

Careless, the fiddler goes
through the land and plays
his cheerful songs.

From all sides it's raining coins
as thanks for music and dance.

The fiddler settles in the tavern.

"Listen, child, what lovely
music, those are gypsy tunes."

"Have no worries, sir Wirt, I've
got money and can pay everything."

Before the landlord's eyes,
the fiddler carelessly throws
the money on the table.

The landlord shows
the fiddler is room.

"Go child, the gypsy should play,
then I would feel better again."

"Papa, the gypsy should play,
then mother forgets her pains!"

"Fiddler, for the sake of my
poor, ill wife, play just a
little bit on your violin."

At the break of dawn
the fiddler is leaving.

A farewell song.

The fiddler's money has muddled
the landlord's senses.

Careless and happy,
the fiddler wanders forth.

The hour of fate.

"The sun, the sun will avenge me!"

"The sun, the sun will avenge him."

"This jewel the fiddler
must have lost."

Twelve years have passed.
The fiddler's wife has followed
the trail of the missing man...

...with her son Arpad, and stayed
to live in the village, where
the fiddler had last paused.

The landlord has come into money
thanks to the money of the fiddler
and has built himself a new house.

A rich farmer sollicits
for Aranka for his son.

The landlord is overjoyed
with the proposal.

"Never, father! I love another!"

The landlord sneaks
after his daughter.

"Help, the fiddler, the gypsy."

"Damned girl, leave
that gypsy alone."

"Father, do you know this jewel?"

In powerless fear and anger the
landlord locks up his daughter.

Arpad waits piningly for Aranka.

"Mother, I want to see,
what's keeping Aranka."

Through the boarded up window,
Arpad hears Aranka's cries for help.

The landlord, in his fancy, runs
to his old, andoned guesthouse.

"The rays of the sun
want to singe me...!"

"On my soul! Is it you, landlord
Matter, or is it a ghost?!"

When he hears footsteps, the
mad landlord crawls into the
most hidden nook of the house.

The madman drops the
match in his fear.

"The heat of the sun wants
to take revenge...!"

"So the sun takes revenge."
