This is doomsday preppers

for over half a century,

retired scientist Bruce beach
has been certain that the world

will end...

Bruce: This is going to
be a universai catastrophe

it's going to be sudden.

I don't think there's going
to be a two-minute warning

there's a great possibiiity
mankind can destroy itseif.

I think a nuciear
war is inevitabie.

In a catastrophe this size
80% of the popuiation wiii die

during the first 2 years.

The things that wiii kiii them
are sociai disruption, piagues,

iack of food, iack
of heat, exposure.

It's a random sort of thing-
who's going to be saved
and who isn't.

To save mankind
from apocalyptic destruction,

Bruce has taken it upon himself
to build a haven for humanity...

A unique place to sit out
the end of the world...

Bruce: This is a 10,000 square
foot sheiter for a nuciear war

he built this
nuclear shelter in 1985,

as an underground orphanage,
a place where a new generation

could be saved from
nuclear apocalypse.

Bruce: Save the chiidren. That's
a basic human characteristic.

They're our hope for the
continuation of iife and for

buiiding a new and better worid.

Bruce's protected
safe houses is constructed from

building blocks that many
kids would consider "familiar"

surroundings"...

42 rec ycled school buses linked
together and buried under

18 inches of concrete
and 14 feet of earth

Bruce: Schooi buses were
buiit to particuiar

government standard.

Avery strong rigid
steei over the roofs.

School buses can
support 1 and a half times their

weight without incurring damage
and costas little as $300

second hand making them a
prepper favorite for bug out

vehicles and even
safe mobile homes.

Bruce: We can have 500
peopie in here, but we have to

have a number of peopie aiso
to watch after the chiidren.

That's our number one mission.

It has been estimated
that if a global nuclear war

occurred, up to a billion lives
would be at risk in the months

and years following.

Bruce sees this shelter as a
safehouse where at least some

could survive.

He named it the successor
to Noah's ark, arktwo.

Bruce: Last time the
water, next time the fire.

There are 20,000 of these

There's never a time in man's
history when he's deveioped a

weapon that he hasn't used it.

And it's just things are
becoming more and more criticai.

Because dangerous
radiation can travel hundreds of

miles from the source
of a nuclear detonation,

and south Dakota,

Ontario, we're in the hottest
spot of the whoie of north

America, for the amount of
faii out that anybody gets.

Bruce and his wife
Jean have been prepping this

apocalyptic shelter for over 30
years, butas they get older the
wider

beach clan regularly pitch
in to keep itafloat.

Bruce: My granddaughter and my
grandson have done iots of work

on this sheiter.

We buiit the shed and
we definiteiy do heip ciean and

remove things from boxes
into tupperware containers.

Make sure everything
is sanitary.

I heip with some
piumbing and eiectricity work.

So peopie can iive down there
when it is the right time.

Bruce: Go in there..

process of teaching his

grandkids Evan and shayna
the way of the ark,

and today he is going over
the admissions process.

Bruce: We have these
gates that we ciose.

If we aren't taking anyone in
then we have the heavy door.

Okay kids this is the way
peopie come into the sheiter.

I'm going to expiain what we do
for admission process for

them here.

So you'ii be abie to expiain
this to other peopie and heip

with it when the time comes.

If a nuclear blast is reported,

the beach family will head to
the arkand start taking in

young refugees.

Bruce: We're going
to say to peopie, weii

we have room for your chiidren
but we don't have room for you.

That's the nature of iife...
This is the iifeboat.

First thing that we do with
peopie when we bring them in is

we have to decontaminate them.

If they have any measurabie
radiation that means

they have to be stripped
get in the shower, washed off.

Even a simple
shower can remove many harmful

radioactive materials
from the skin,

so experts recommend that
you wash yourself and remove

contaminated clothing as soon
as you are exposed to radiation.

Bruce: Which one of you wouid
like to be in a radiation suit?

Bruce you wiii? Okay.
You want a radiation suit too?

Sure

once clean, each of
the ark's inhabitants will wear

sterilized protective suits.

This weekend shayna
and her mom bahiaare cleaning

and putting together
"go away kits"...

Packs that will help people
live outside of the ark.

Bruce: So we're sending them
away with these radiation

detectors because we don't
have any more capacity in

the sheiter.

Different ones have
different strengths I think.

Because you cannot see,

smell or feel nuclear
radiation, detectors like these

"decimeters" are often an
essential part of preppers'

survival kits... They willallow
people outside the ark to avoid

areas of intense fall out, and
treat or isolate people already

affected by radiation.

This weekend we probabiy cieaned
out 30 huge boxes of these

decimeters ready to go.

This is a
major part of our iife,

just as much as it is grandpa's.

It's his dream and his goai so
one day it wiii be our dream and

our goai to finish
what he has started.

Bruce: Ya'ii stiii stand
up here for a minute.

Beyond his family,
Bruce wants his local community

to know that they have somewhere
safe to go during a nuclear war

so today, he is showing local
school kids around the ark...

Bruce: Okay come on down guys.
This is like an

underground submarine.

We're trying to get younger
peopie invoived and more peopie

that you have in your community
the more resources that you have

this way.

Once inside the
shelter, the 500 young refugees

will sleep in one of the 5
school buses dedicated to

bunk-beds.

Bruce: This bunk room is for 96
chiidren and we put two smaii

chiidren under the age of 5 foot
to foot on each of the bunks,

to sieep the chiidren 12 hours
a day, two shifts of 48.

Bruce's rotating sleep
s ystem is similar to that used

on real subnarines, and allows
him to house not just 250,

but 500 people in the ark.

Bruce: Aii the bunkrooms
are very much like this.

Bruce expects that
his refugees will have to stay

inside the ark for weeks, maybe
months to avoid the worst of the

radiation outside, and while
theyare underground Bruce will

have to feed hundreds of hungry
mouths, so he has spent 30 years

stockpiling literally
tons of food.

Bruce: And you shouid
take a peek down our pot.

Our cook says with this pot, and
his oven in the next one he can

give a roii and a biscuit to
3000 peopie and a soup to

3000 peopie a day.

I didn't think
it wouid be this big.

It's like extensive it's huge.

It's pretty mind biowing,
to think that it can fit so many

peopie, underground
and that's just unreai.

Bruce: Aii right come in this
way-ya'ii want to be in here.

One of the hazards
of living underground for

an extended period is making
sure that you have enough air

to breathe.

At full capacityand without
proper air circulation,

Bruce's 10,000-foot shelter
would run out of oxygen in

approximately half a day.

Bruce: Ok, one of the important
things about the probiems in the

sheiter, one of the things we
have to be concerned about is

being abie to move air
anywhere we want to.

So Bruce has devised
a rather unusualand

cost effective
air-circulation s ystem...

Bruce: And this is one of
the systems that we use.

I thought it was going
to go down the haiiway.

I couid have redirected it.

This strong line of
garbage bags can distribute

300 cubic feet of air from the
outside vents to different

locations in the shelter...

Bruce: My wife spent
hours and hours taping

do you ever get tired of
waiting for the worid to end?

Bruce: Many peopie say
iook at that crazy oid man,

how he's wasted his iife out
there always worrying about

the worid's going to end when
instead he couid be out piaying

goif, you know, getting that
iittie white baii out there in

the hoie and this wouidn't
have been meaningfui to me.

So we are going to open
this steei door here.

This is the back
door to the sheiter.

Many peopie think
that I'm obsessive.

I guess it depends on
what one is obsessed with,

they are obsessed with
dedicating their iife to

humanity and weii maybe
that's a good obsession.

Bruce's shelter was
builtas a second Noah's ark

a unique haven from a
nuclear apocalypse...

But it has never
officially been named...

Until now...

I think it's awesome.

In rural Ontario,
Canada, a 10,000 square foot

underground shelter named

Its been very different

Over the years Bruce
has created a network of ark 2

preppers based all
around the United States.

Bruce: I may not iive
through to see it, but

I've certainiy spread this
idea to thousands and thousands

of peopie aiready.

His latest
collaborative project is an off

grid communication s ystem
that can be used as the ark's

lifeline to the outside
world during a nuclear war.

Tonight he is meeting with Greg
Franklin and Lisa maggiore to go

over the details.

Bruce: Locai communication
are going to be a very,

very important factor in the
recovery process for security.

To know what is
happening around.

To know where it is safe to go.

The secondary effect
of a nuclear detonation is an

e.M.P-awave of electromagnetic
energ y powerful enough to bring

Every method of
communication we have,

ceii phones, or teiephones, or
Internet aii reiy on extensive

infrastructure, which wiii

Bruce: The ark is about
our service to humanity.

And whether or not I pass the
ark on to the grandchiidren is

irreievant.

What is important that I pass
on to my grandchiidren is a

dedication of
service to humanity and

so that's what my iife is about.

What my iegacy wiii
be, I have no idea.

I may be entireiy wrong,
written off, forgotten.

The worid may never
know about me ten,

twenty years from now you know.

So the first ark was for what?

For water.

coiiapse of society due

to peak oii.

The term peak oil
refers to the eventual decline

in the supply of oil reserves.

If oil becomes harder to get,
the price will increase past

the point when people
can afford to buy it.

The U.S. alone consumes 20
million barrels of oil every day

and global demand is projected
to grow bya quarter by 2030.

I think drastic changes
couid happen iiteraiiy in a

matter of a coupie
of years from now.

Aii it takes is for the demand
for oii to out strip the suppiy

and where we have been on
the razors edge of that for a

really iong time.

My worst cast scenario is that
oii exporting countries stop

exporting and gas pumps start
running dry around America.

And that just has a cascading
effect across our entire

society.

Peopie won't be
abie to go to work,

and if you can't go to work, the
infrastructure starts to faii.

With 86% of Americans
commuting to work by car,

Jeremy fears society
will grind to a halt.

Once the
infrastructure starts to faii,

we couid eventuaiiy
see the grid go down.

And if the grid goes down,
society as we know it wiii be

very, very changed.

Um, my first reaction
to my husband's desire to start

prepping was a iittie scared.

I actuaiiy waiked away and
was like trying to ignore him

because I didn't
want to admit it.

It took me about a year to
finaiiy come to terms with

the idea of prepping.

In my mind the worid's
kind of faiiing apart.

And it's only
going to get worse.

I'd like to think of
myseif as actuaiiy a fairiy

baianced person.

I don't think this is an
obsession.

It's just a precaution.

After peak oil, Jeremy
believes rolling blackouts will

be common without the grid,
basic utilities and services

will cease to function -
including one of life's vital

conveniences... tap water.

Jeremyand Kelly have identified
their nearest source of water...

Their hot tub

when I first toid my
wife about drinking water out of

the hot tub she seemed a iittie
bit reiuctant but I think

we both decided that we wouid
be safe once we fiitered it.

This is our emergency suppiy
we've got 400 - 450 gaiions

ready to go.

Jeremyand kellyare
able to ration their hot tub

water by using
the drainage tube.

This allows them to
preserve a precious resource

yeah I never
wouid have thought that,

getting water from the hot tub

having clean water
is essential to survival.

So in a grid down situation, it
is imperative to have awater

purification s ystem.

The 450 gallons of water in a
hot tub could hydrate Jeremy,

kellyand Xander
for about 8 months.

Two, are you kidding me?
I can't beiieve we're

actuaiiy make hot chocoiate
out of hot tub water.Ok...

Nice.

That's actuaiiy not bad.

Tastes fine.

Nice. Ok that works.

Even when the grid goes down
and the worid is going crazy,

my home and my family are the
most important thing to me,

and keeping that part of our
iife as normai as possibie is

very important to me.

Even though he is
purifying water for his family,

Jeremy is still concerned
about infections and disease.

One of the concerns
in the post coiiapsed worid,

is the iack of access
to medicai faciiities,

antibiotics things like that.

80% of the active
ingredients used in American

drugs are made overseas and
without the fuel to ship them,

emergenc y treatment
will be in short supply.

So Jeremy is leaving
nothing to chance.

Turns out that the
antibiotics used for fish tanks,

is exactiy the same antibiotics
as prescribed for humans.

So you can actuaiiy get human
antibiotics at a pet store.

Common antibiotics
like amoxic yllin are marketed

under different names
for aquatic use.

Fish antibiotics are favorite
among preppers to stock pile

because theyare widely
available withouta prescription

or pharmacist.

Part of being a prepper
is being prepared for anything

and that inciudes getting
sick and if there's no doctor

avaiiabie to give you a
prescription or you simpiy run

out of antibiotics, you
got have them stockpiied.

Antibiotics and
hot tub hot chocolate,

won't save jeremyand his family
if their community falls prey to

violence.

So Jeremy has a
serious back up plan.

I just caii it the
'beast' most of the time.

Experts disagree about
when we will reach the peak of

oil production.

Some estimate it will
peakas soon as 2035.

Jeremy believes italready has.

I personaiiy beiieve
that actuaiiy peak oii has

happened.

I think we saw that from
the 2008 financiai coiiapse.

It was actuaiiy a resuit of an
energy shock from 2007 or so.

And I think in the future we'ii
see more of those and they're

going to be faster
and more striking.

Jeremyand his
wife Kelly believe nowhere,

not even their home will be
safe after the peak oil crash.

If society really does
coiiapse to the point where your

neighbors become desperate
or peopie are raiding your

neighborhood for your suppiies,
it might become necessary

to bug out.

Jeremy believes a peak
oil crisis will lead to social

colapse a situation
that has led to torture,

cannablism and mass
executions around the world.

Jeremyand kellyare prepared
to leave everything behind to

protect their son.

And Jeremy has found
ironic means to that end.

He calls it... the beast.

Hey get out of my way.
I'm bigger than you.

Jeremy found the beast
online and purchased it used

from a prop company
for 3500 dollars.

When my husband Jeremy
came to me for the first time

and toid me he wanted
to buy an army truck,

I honestiy thought he was nuts.

Why in the worid do
we need an army truck?

Where are we going to
park an army truck?

We iive in the suburbs.

I thought he was insane.

And before it was
a civilian vehicle the beast

served in desert storm.

So, this truck is
an actuai miiitary vehicie.

It's caiied the m-35,
affectionateiy known as the
deuce and a haif.

The m-35 is the
favorite transport vehicle of

the us army.

It can carry 5,000
pounds of cargo off road.

And up to 10,000 pounds on road.

If kellyand Jeremy
decide to bug out,

the beast will offer
them transportation,

means to carry supplies,
and even shelter.

And so when we started
taiking, I started reaiizing,

you know what, this
is a fabuious idea.

It's sheiter, it's
aiso transportation.

It's got a huge compartment.

We can put aii our water;
We can put aii our food.

Put can put the
bunk bed in there.

Have a piace to sieep and
really sheiter our family in.

So if we do need
to get out of town,

if we do need to ieave
our home and fiee,

we have a vehicie to do so in.

But if Jeremy
and Kelly take to the road,

they're going to need fuel
to power a mobile lifestyle.

And while it might look
like a gas guzzler,

the beast is actually quite
flexible when it comes to fuel.

This truck is
a muiti-fuei vehicie,

and so if we do have peak oii
and certain kinds of fuei become

really really hard to come by,
this wiii iiteraiiy run on about

any iiquid fuei.

It'ii run on diesei,
which it prefers.

You can put gas in it,
kerosene, jet fuei,

doesn't like the octane,
but it wiii work.

But most importantiy to me, it
actuaiiy can run on used

motor oii.

Motor oil is used
to lubricate an internal

combustion engine's moving
parts.

Most people recognize motor
oilas the stuff their mechanic

changes out every 3000-miles.

But one man's trash is
another man's treasure.

In a doomsday
scenario, this truck you know,

it can get us anywhere, and it
can get us there using a fuei

that pretty much
nobody eise needs.

With roughly 250
million passenger cars in

America, Jeremy will be able
to s yphon fuel from avirtually

unlimited supplyafter
peak oil doomsday.

But for safety, he wants to make
sure he can at least get his

family out of harm's way.

Jeremy: We're hoping to
stockpiie around 1000 to 1500

gaiions of used motor oii,
for us to use in case of an

emergency.

Graten: That is one bad truck!
Haha.

Today, Jeremy
and his friend graten,

visita local service station.

It's just the place to find
large quantities of used motor

oil, awaiting disposal.

Jeremy: Gary? Jeremy.

I caiied eariier about getting
some of your used motor oii.

Gary: Oh yeah. That's
fine. What do you use it for?

Jeremy: See that big
army truck out there.

Gary: Seen you puii in.

Jeremy: Yeah. It runs on
used motor oii.

Gary: If it works good I might
do something like that too

because I've got iots of used
motor oii. You're weicome to it.

The first time
I saw that big truck,

I thought I was being invaded. I
didn't know what it was.

It's pretty big.

Graten: I feel like a fireman.

S yphoning used
motor oil is a mess y job,

requiring special
tools and elbow grease.

Graton: Just get
this thing on here.

Jeremy has three
liquid storage tanks,

1 on board and two more
in a secure location,

for stock piling used motor oil.

Jeremy: Go get it fired up.

Each can hold up to 400 gallons.

Jeremy: Looks good, and iooks
like we got about 300 gaiions

out of these guys.

Jeremyand graten
filter the oil through a sock

to catch any debree like
dirt, metal scrapings,

and other fine particals
that may be left behind

from prior use.

With their new motor oil stores,
jeremyand Kelly believe they

now have enough oil to drive
half wayacross the country,

so theyare putting
themselves to the test.

We got to hurry. We got
to hurry. Hurry!

And food, oh these are heavy.

What eise? Grab the tent,
grab the rope, hurry.

that our average vehicies do.

got my son on my iap,

and my husband in the driver's
seat that's aii I need.

in a centrifuge.

This would clean
used oil fatser.

in a centrifugai system,

but didn't know a iot about it,
so something I'ii definiteiy

You should have bug
out bags packed and ready

to grab.

The truck should be stocked and
awaiting departure atall times.

I agree. We're actuaiiy
putting some items in the truck;

but individuai bug out bags
has always been on our pians,

and just something we
haven't gotten around to.

And I do think it
shouid be a priority.

Since nationai
geographic was here;

we've done our best to
take the expert's advice.

Specificaiiy, we've actuaiiy
got out bug-out bags,

and our get home
bags ready to go.

And we've aiso ioaded up
our truck with more provisions

and suppiies, so in the event we
needed to just jump in our truck

and go, we'd be abie to do so

while some
experts believe, peak oil

has already occurred, others
believe it is decades away.

There are so many variables that
creating an accurate projection
