You seem so mysterious.
Why don't you tell me about yourself?
Well, my dad founded this church when I was two years old,
so I grew up right here at this church.
You know, I was always so proud of him.
He worked so hard to keep this church.
Anyways, he passed recently.
I think I heard something about that.
My father was a great man.
And, you know, he never showed it,
but I think he always wanted a son--
someone who could follow in his footsteps.
When he died, he told Mama and me...
that the Holy Spirit was gonna send us a pastor.
He also said that that man would be--
What?
Never mind.
Anyways, we're no closer to finding a pastor,
and these bills aren't being paid.
I don't know how much longer we're gonna be able to hold on.
What?
Will you pray with me?
Yes.
Father, help them to see that every knee shall bow...
and every tongue confess...
that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Vanessa. Oh.
Vanessa, we need your help in the kitchen, dear.
All right, Mama. Yes.

- Amen. - Amen.
Okay, last week we ended our study talking about what?
- Does anybody remember? - Grace.
All right. Our lesson today is going to be out of Psalms.
So let us turn to Psalms, chapter one.
Sister Patterson, do you really think God cares about us?
How do you know?
What if God has just abandoned us?
I mean, look around, you know.
You all look like pretty nice people,
but once you go out there, it ain't nothin' nice.
Just look at me.
I was the son of a crackhead,
and my stepfather was a dope fiend that liked little boys.
Where was God for me?
And they say he takes care of babies and old people,
but where was he when I needed to be taken care of?
All I know is the streets.
It wasn't God that did that to you and your mother.
It was those same streets that you seem to glorify.
You know, I bet that it was the same God...
that kept you here today...
where you can just sit here and even tell about it.
And if your mother-- if she would have just listened to the word of God...
instead of listening to those streets out there,
she would be here today to tell about it.
But you know what? You know what?
It's not too late. It's not too late, son.
God wants to save you. He wants to bring you out of those streets.
I can see it on you. He wants to help you.
And if you just let him--
[ Chuckles ] whoo--
you can be something else in God.
It's not too late.
Man, Sister Patterson, you have no idea--
all the bad things I've done, all the people I hurt.
That's because all this world has to offer you, son,
is lies, death,
deceit and destruction.
But God-- God can offer you life...
and give you something that you've never seen before.
Young man, you think you have the whole world ahead of you,
but all you have is what I have--
today,
right now.
But what would God want with me?
I'm nothing. I'm less than nothing.
Why-- Why would he save me?
I know, I know.
You see, I say that to myself every day, son.
But I've come to the understanding...
it's his grace.
Grace.
