family, the courtier family.

There they are.

Gene, Doris, and their two kids,

who, because of one of those
passing split second decisions

learned that the night holds terror.

I had been to Los Angeles

and was returning home.

See, I lived at the
Edwards air force base,

that's out in the desert near mojave.

I had a wonderful family and a good job.

What more could a man ask for?

Then I spotted a fellow
trying to hitch a ride.

That's how it all began,

on the afternoon of February 16th, 1953.

It was one of those quick
impulsive decisions,

but I stopped.

I go as far as the dry lake road.

It's just outside of mojave.

That's far enough.

to make a try for it.

Then something happened.

I couldn't take the risk of that woman

and little boy getting killed!

up at this very moment?

I was trapped, I knew it.

But all I could do now
was play along with them,

make it seem like I was on the level

100 percent on the level.
