on what I preach today.

I want you to testify on what
you've seen and heard today.

what you're willing to do

for this revelation of God.

to have walked through
every day, die slowly.

And from the time you're a child

to the time you get
gray, you're dying.

It's as a revolutionary suicide,

this is not a
self-destructive suicide.

So they'll pay for this.

They brought this upon us

They set an example for others,

1,000 people who said, "We don't
like the way the world is."

"Take some, take
our life from us."

"We didn't commit suicide,

of the horror at Jonestown

that many cemeteries didn't
even want to accept the dead.

Didn't wanna be associated
with the tragedy.

Here at the Evergreen Cemetery
in Oakland, California

409 victims are buried

in a mass grave
beneath this hillside.

[Man on TV] The Military
Airlift Command

flew its C-141 transports
into Jonestown, Guyana

with the necessary
supplies and equipment

to move more than 900 bodies

of American citizens
to the United States.

The task was accomplished
in several stages.

From before Thanksgiving,
until several weeks later, MAC

was involved in the cleanup
operations in Guyana.

The bodies were flown
to Dover Air Force Base

for the task of identification
and disposition.

the promise of nutrition

You're taught to
laude false gods,

celebrities, the
rich and powerful.

You're told to worship greed.

To believe that money
can buy you happiness.

But the 1% control
the majority of wealth

and everyone else is
encouraged to fight

for the pitiful
scraps remaining.

From the cradle to the
grave you don't have choice.

You have owners.

We dare not step
outside of the box

because we're ruled by fear.

Fearful that if we open our
minds and embrace new ideas

people will think we're crazy.

When you dismiss
a thought process

beyond which has been
programmed into you from birth

you remain within the false
state of consciousness,

which has been created to
keep you under control.

They want you to obey,

to never discover the true
power we all hold within us.

Wake up, wake up now

or forever remain
imprisoned inside the dream.

So, tell me about
your latest dream.

Well, that's nothing we
haven't covered before.

According to Freud every dream

represents wish fulfillment.

What does that mean?

Well, I've always believed

that dreams are based
on repressed desires.

But then other psychologists
believe that dreams

have less to do with our desires

and more to do with our
worries or preoccupations.

It's good for you to
talk about your dreams.

When the answers can't be
found in the waking world

perhaps they can be found
in the subconscious.

There's no where to hide there.

I feel like we're going
around in circles.

It's nothing personal, I know

It's just all these years later

maybe talking isn't
enough anymore.

part of healing process.

It should always be

I thought my feelings

about the church
woulda changed by now.

This all seems so redundant.

My mom and dad dedicated
their lives to the church

and look how God rewarded them.

are called to God early

and they completed it.

My parents still
had a lot of plans.

A lot of things they
still wanted to do.

And they're taking before
they had a chance to do them,

just seem so unfair.

Perhaps some people
aren't just here

on earth for themselves.

help someone else learn.

But think of it this way:
their mission was simply

to raise you and set
you on your journey.

But now, for you to truly grow,
you have to take the rest

of the trip without them.

What could I possible learn

from losing two people
I loved so much?

I guess that's what
you have to find out.

I never had a good
relationship with my parents,

left me with the core
belief that I was unlovable.

But that's changed now, I
know I'm worthy of love.

I finally know what it's
like to be part of a family.

To feel a sense
of love and unity.

You know there's a lot of
talk about Reverend Jones.

Some say he preaches blasphemy.

The establishment attack anyone

who upsets the natural
order of things.

Church is the last
thing I need right now.

no other preacher would dare to.

We're told it guarantees

as I know y'all did too.

But equality is not what I
see on the streets of America.

All I've seen is division.

We live in a country
where racial segregation

and slavery ruled for
many a generation.

Sadly, that prejudice is
alive and well today.

Here at The People's Temple

we don't judge people
by their color,

we judge them by their actions.

Now, many have
criticized our path.

There are those who call
us dreamy-eyed socialists.

Well I say we gotta be
dreamy eyed together

or we're gonna be
blown up together.

We gotta live together or
we're gonna die together.

This is a country that
despises our rainbow family.

They say we're never
gonna get to heaven

unless we do things their way.

But that's the biggest
cop out in the world.

If you die a devil, then as a
tree falls so shall it lie.

If you're creep here on earth

you'd make a hell out of
any heaven you went to.

We gotta get to doing to
what Jesus told us to do,

build a heaven here.

That's why we have the People's
Temple Agricultural Project.

Many of our members are
out in Guyana right now

farming the land and paving
the way for our arrival.

There we will establish
our own heaven,

free from prejudice
and persecution.

We will be self-sufficient.

We will be loving.

We will enjoy our community

without some authoritarian
honky telling us

what we do in love is wrong.

create paradise,

here hoping to deal

with my feelings

because I wanna connect

with something spiritual,

something beyond
everyday existence

but to connect to that

should make you feel

within the church.

I thought it would open
my mind and my heart

but all it did was
close them off.

You know, religion doesn't have
a monopoly on spirituality.

And your feelings aren't
subjugated by not knowing.

We are all connected, you
just don't see it yet.

Sometimes it takes an event
so incredible to wake us up

for better or worse and
you don't get to choose.

I'm constantly amazed every
time I walk through here.

It's so beautiful.

Nothing is more perfect
than this moment.

life on this planet

has its own unique vibration.

Connection to every living

but I can't sustain it.

It feels like
there's resistance.

Start with the body and
the mind will follow.

We've all had
trauma in our lives

just that you're not defined

by your past, good
or not so good.

It's human to feel emotions

but people think they
are their emotions

when it's really just
one small part of us

yet we let those emotions
control our lives.

So how do we break
free of those emotions?

First acknowledge that you
can feel, let yourself feel

but then remember that
you're not your thoughts

nor your emotions.

Sounds so simple.

It's never simple to undo
decades of damaging thoughts.

It takes a great deal of belief.

I did believe in something
look where that go me.

But have you ever believed in
yourself, believed in Sarah?

I know it's hard for
you to believe me

but when a person allows
their emotional state

to overcloud their judgment

it makes it difficult
to really see.
