Original subtitles

You want me to acquire the map,

retrieve Flint's treasure, and then?

Divert the monies to Saint-Domingue.

We've identified the leader, Makandal.

[Silver] We will cast you adrift, Captain.

'Tis no place for an honest man.

The map, there's no X to mark the spot.

Seis Majri A Chrysos.

And only one man, who I kept alive,

knows what those words mean.

You'd kill your people's hope of freedom

for your own monied ends?

Me not part of no people.

Pay your respects to your new captain.

I'll draw you the true map once I'm on Skeleton Island.

Mr. Baker.

Have that noose took down.

[stirring music]

[playing upbeat jig]

Enjoying the spectacle, Mr. Graham?

Delightful, Master Hawkins.

Land ahoy!

- [music stops] - [men cheering]

Aye!

That be Skeleton Island!

[crew cheers]

Mr. Cameron!

Prepare to change course.

Before the sun sets three times,

yon island be our colony of riches!

[crew] Yeah!

Jim.

I elected to ally myself with Silver's mutiny.

But... I mean to retake this ship.

With your help. And Mr. Graham's.

Not just a ship, Mr. Cameron.

We take the treasure of Captain Flint.

[tense theme music]

[Silver] Captain Flint chose three men

to help him bear our hard-gotten gain.

Black Dog, who had the old Albatross

running sleeker and faster than a sun god's chariot.

Blind Pew, who played the fiddle as angels might.

And Ben Gunn, our surgeon,

who fashioned aromas

to raise the dead and ply us with draughts

what put metal in our minds and brawn in our bodies.

Three days and three nights,

I stood starboard on the mighty Albatross

till Captain Flint came back

from yon cursed island.

Alone and with a tale to tell

of how Skeleton Island itself were a quickened demon

and how them three lads perished

from monsters and mayhem after they buried yon treasure.

"Where," we ask...

"where exactly the treasure, Captain Flint?"

- Hell. - Hell.

Aye, lads.

"Hell" were all he'd say.

So, one day's walk to the prize,

two days to bear it back.

So I posit a five-man landing crew,

one for each handle of the chest,

and a spare...

should one of us perish.

First, me and me ol' timber.

Second, your lickle self.

Well, you won't find much without me.

We'll have two strong lads.

Mr. Arra...

and the good lieutenant here.

I agreed to Mr. Arra.

When I fixed a map in my mind's eye,

you need a man versed in the art of navigation.

A traitor... to his oath in office.

Mr. Cameron.

Captain, this insolent scamp's company is repulsive to me.

Stand to go about, sir.

Landing party it is.

My memory would serve me better

knowing I have Mr. Graham by my side.

[laughing]

Mr. Graham?

What hazed you and your virtuous mother

all the way from Bristol?

No Graham, no map, no treasure.

Mr. Arra.

Bring forth me honeypot.

Aye, Captain Silver.

Lads, while we're three days gone,

your captain issues standing orders.

All hands be commanded to feast freely

on the finest draught of rum

under the mast of Admiral God in the sky.

Extra rations till we set sail for England,

rich as emperors!

[crew] Yeah!

Guard this bag well, Mr. Arra.

Aye, Captain Silver.

[Silver] It be all of our ammunition.

Three guns, gentlemen. One for Mr. Cameron,

one for Mr. Arra,

and one for meself.

Time has come, Jim lad.

Draw the map.

Gentlemen, this fabled chart

is a most exquisite and complicated diagram

of three triangles around a semicircle.

The triangles, I believe,

constitute a plan of three parts of this island.

The semicircle signifies Hell.

Where the treasure lies.

And does this diagram specify the first triangle

we must traverse, Jim?

Captain Flint has contrived

an exacting and intricate puzzle

whereby each triangle contains symbols, words, arrows,

which I have, in these past weeks with my mother,

been endeavoring to decipher.

How terribly confounding, James.

Exactly, Mr. Graham.

The mind of Captain Flint is a mystery, a puzzle...

Draw the damn map and we can reckon it out.

No need to worry, Mr. Silver.

[eerie music]

[Jim] Three fingers, lads.

Configured, I believe...

to represent what we saw over yonder.

This triangle is our starting point.

We're instructed to follow a straight line...

south by southeast, to here.

A square, colored red on the map.

The second triangle, Jim. Will you draw it for us?

No, Mr. Graham.

- I will not. - [Silver] I hear your tune.

You'll draw the second triangle when we find the red square.

How else do I save myself from your murderous impulses,

Captain Silver?

Lads, we are but a small company

upon this forbidden land.

One fail, we all fail.

One dies, we all dies.

I say we proceed in a spirit of unity and harmony.

Until we have the treasure

and borne it back here to your ship?

Aye.

And then?

We have a long and rough passage ahead.

As Captain Flint said...

"Here be monsters."

[dramatic music]

[Jim] Triangle. Three fingers.

South by southeast.

The Red Square.

[jig playing]

Do you trust them, Lieutenant, sir?

They don't trust each other, I reckon.

- Long John Silver's our captain. - [Meg] Aye.

He'll have the boy's throat slit.

And Graham's too.

And we'll have all the treasure between us, won't we, lads?

God bless King Billy.

And God bless Long John Silver.

[crew] Aye!

- Long John Silver! - [cheering]

Aye!

South by southeast.

Directly through that glen.

It's a puzzle indeed, Jim.

I do not refer to the map.

We are five in number to bear a four-handled chest.

So, Silver means to kill me before the day's out.

I have the means to block him.

Until you run out of triangles.

Three men, three guns.

Mr. Cameron is with us.

[Silver] Ahoy there.

What are you pair of old fishwives gossiping over?

Yeah. Nothing of consequence, Mr. Silver.

Fondly remembering my dead mother,

if you must know, Mr. Silver.

[dramatic music]

[Silver] Damn it!

That be our only ammunition.

It is ruined.

Sorry, Captain.

This stays between us.

[groans]

Fresh water, lads.

You sip upon it first, sir.

Only four handles on that chest.

I sees you knows your abacus.

[gulping]

I suppose you'll be wanting me to sip yours.

No need.

Well, sir, it seems your spare ammunition is spoiled.

[Silver] Aye.

Three guns and but three bullets.

One for me, one for Jim.

One for who, I wonder?

[Silver] You run away with yourself.

These guns is but safety from monsters and mayhem.

[Graham] Of course.

[soft music]

What in damnation is that?

[Silver] That be a god of the old Caribs people,

what lived here before the time of Jesus the Virgin.

I thought you said this place was not inhabited.

The Caribs died out a hundred years past,

when the white man came with guns and disease.

[eerie music]

[Cameron] I have the means to shoot Silver,

when the opportunity arises.

[Jim] You can't.

There are words on the map.

Hell itself under the symbol of a cauldron.

In the shape of a semi-circle.

Written in the secret language of the Albatross.

Seis Majri A Chrysos.

It's the name of a dance.

And Silver's the only one that knows what the words mean.

We keep him alive until he tells us.

- A puzzle indeed. - How much further, gentlemen?

I don't know, Mr. Arra.

Captain Flint's map has no scale.

Are you sure we're going the right way?

Captain Flint contrived the map

to aid his own mind and no other man's.

We are on the correct bearing.

I see it! I see it, the red square!

About three miles, I reckon.

[eerie music]

Captain Silver.

[Silver] Blind Pew.

Our fiddler.

I knows because his right thumb be missing.

[Jim] Stabbed in the neck by Captain Flint.

Poor Blind Pew.

He didn't see it coming.

Flint took three men to bear and bury the treasure.

In Jim's mind, there are three triangles with three symbols.

So, when we reach the next two symbols,

there should be two more skeletons of your former crew.

Ben Gunn.

And Black Dog.

Murdered by your dear captain

and pointing us onward.

You talk more sense than spit, Mr. Graham.

For once.

He's pointing us east.

To the Green Eye, come on.

[Jim] The second triangle. East.

The Green Eye.

[squawking]

[Graham] Captain Silver.

[Silver] Prisoner Graham.

I must say, I am curious as to

your stewardship of the Hispaniola.

So much grog for the crew

when they face such an arduous journey

back to England with the treasure.

[Silver] A little shore leave, so to speak.

It is a captain's duty to minister to him bonny lads.

As it's your duty to protect young Master Hawkin.

I honor the contract I made with his mother.

You and your contracts.

But I'm thinking you and me walk the same road here.

[chuckles] Well, thank you very much for equating me

with the obvious, Mr. Silver.

I means Jim Hawkin

saved us both from the noose, didn't he?

And you would have had me hanged?

As you would me.

I suppose we do walk the same path.

Jim saves me because he doesn't trust you

and needs my protection.

Or maybe he preserves me because he don't trust you

and he wants my protection.

[chuckling]

Seems Jim Hawkin...

playing us against one another.

Now, Mr. Silver, are you suggesting

we align our interests and what?

Torture young Jim until he yields us the map,

then share in the booty together?

I ain't suggesting nothing.

Just chopping onions.

[whizzing]

[tense music]

[wood cracking]

Go, go, go.

[arrow whizzing]

[arrows whizzing]

Caribs.

[Jim panting]

- [arrow whizzing] - [squelching]

[grunting in pain]

Quiet, Jim lad.

[muffled yell]

[Jim telling in pain]

It's all right.

Ah! [gasping]

Out of view.

Everyone out of view.

This way, Jim. Down, here.

Mr. Arra, Mr. Cameron, keep watch for them Caribs.

Yes, Mr. Silver.

Easy, lad, easy.

Mr. Graham, hold him steady.

[groaning] I can't...

Jim lad, look at me, look at me, listen.

Distance your mind from the pain.

All right?

This boon of nature was taught to me

by our old surgeon on the Albatross...

- Shh. - Ben Gunn himself.

He was a sorcerer...

of the science of plants, herbs, and flowers.

I learned from him

that this very nectar...

[Jim gasping, panting]

...will purge a wound

of all things colic.

Okay, Jim lad.

- [Jim grunting] - Done, lad, done, lad.

I thought the Carib natives were no more, Captain.

Seems not.

And yet, as we were swarmed with arrows,

you stood there impervious, with a smile on your face.

'Tis the white man they fear and loathe, not me.

So, the next time they attack us,

we shall take shelter behind you.

Just Jim I shelter.

There's nothing in your head I want.

Ah. No Cameron, no Mr. Arra?

There's nothing in my head, Captain Silver.

How much further from here, Master Hawkins?

[groans] I don't know, Mr. Arra.

- But we need out of these woods. - And away from the Caribs.

- [screeches] - [gunshot]

- Ugh. - Damn it!

I'm sorry, Captain Silver.

Two bullets, two guns.

- [Jim groaning] - I got you.

[tense music]

[insects chirping]

What is it, Jim?

In Captain Flint we trust.

The Green Eye.

[eerie music]

[wind whistling]

[Silver] Black Dog.

The bosun of the Albatross.

His earring of Barbary gold.

He points us south by south west.

To the Veiled Lady.

Where we find?

Ben Gunn.

Who will show us the path to Hell.

If I might take a lickle moment

to bid farewell to me old mess mate.

Ah, well, Black Dog.

No pockets in a shroud, eh?

[Silver laughing]

[intense music]

[Jim] Third triangle.

South by south west.

The Veiled Lady.

[Silver] Lads.

I been thinking.

[Graham] Haven't we all?

[Silver] Now that we've faithfully observed

our peace compact,

as the ever-scrabbling nations might call it.

[Graham] Which only holds until we find the treasure.

And then, no doubt, you mean to kill Jim and I

with the two remaining bullets.

Either Jim or you, Mr. Graham.

Not both.

Four handles on that chest.

But 'ere I be.

Bound by oath to bring yon treasure back

to them fine men of the Hispaniola.

Sorely torn atwixt the burdens of captaincy

and my attachment to you fine me

because of the tribulations

we've weathered together.

And more to come.

And how might we help you resolve this

agonizing dilemma, Captain Silver?

That be the question

that's been gnarking at me these past hours.

And I have the answer.

Which requires me having less than half the treasure.

[Silver] Quick as the sands of Kalulah, Jim lad.

If you and Mr. Graham

were to muster to an ordinary seaman's share of the prize,

which I'm sure would make you a gentleman,

as your dear and gracious mother wished,

I swear...

there would be no killing.

Or schemes thereof.

Master Hawkins.

In respect of your Christian mother's wish,

I'll give you a portion of my share.

All I mean to claim from Captain Flint's monies

is thirty pound.

Suffice to blow me home

to the marshes of Burton Mere,

where I shall, uh,

I shall entreat Hetty Foster's hand in marriage.

And, if she'll have me...

we'll buy a passage to the new States of America,

where a man can work his own piece of land

and raise his family free of leeching lords

and squires and the like.

Thirty pounds

and not a sou more for me, Captain Silver.

[Silver] Yours, Mr. Arra.

First and foremost.

We'll have the treasure in our claws by sundown.

You do a fine job of navigating us, lad.

Jim Hawkins. I remember everything.

But remembering ain't knowing, is it?

The more I think 'pon it,

maybe there's something I knows

more than you would knows.

I know you're addling me, Captain.

You're not a lad to addle easy.

So why exact, us being sworn enemies

from the Admiral Benbow...

have you been contriving to keep me alive?

- [dull thud] - [Arra groans]

[screaming, gasps]

- Mr. Arra. - What is it?

What's wrong? What's happened, Mr. Arra?

Mr. Arra!

[Jim] What is it? What's happened?

Mr. Arra!

- What? You eat this? - Yes.

He ate the Manchineel tree fruit. 'Tis poisonous.

Burning through his guts like a lava.

Seen men take days to die from this.

- What do we do? - There's nothing.

- There must be something. - There's nothing!

- Ah! - Mr. Arra be a dead man.

Tell me. Is there a plant? Something to subdue the pain?

There is nothing.

What are you saying?

No. No.

Oh, Jesus.

[Arra groaning in pain]

Here, take my hand. Go on. I got you.

[screaming]

- Go on! - [Graham] Do it.

- [Arra moaning] - Do it.

[Arra] Please. Do it.

Do it!

Ah!

- [Graham] Do it! - Please. Please.

No.

- [Arra grunting] - Silver.

Silver, look at me. Give me the gun. I'll do it.

What's wrong with you? The man's in pain.

[grunting]

You did what was right

and good.

Never killed a man before.

I think it brave, Lachlan--

Gentlemen, we cannot succumb to...

this damned island will yield the bounty it holds.

And by God, we'll have it. And thirty-- No.

One hundred pounds will go to Miss Hetty Foster...

of the parish of Burton Mere.

Or we're all deservedly damned.

[squawking]

Now, with Mr. Arra gone, we are three against one.

But he has the last firearm,

he's as strong as a Galloway bull,

already brandishes one knife,

and no doubt secretes another three on his person.

[Jim] And one in his crutch.

[Graham] Ha. With a gun against his head,

he'll tell us what those words mean.

[Jim] He'd die first.

[Silver] Lads.

Something troubling you?

You seem like the one who's troubled, Mr. Silver.

Aye.

Troubled I am, Mr. Graham.

The closer we come to yon treasure,

the more concerned I gets,

considering the death of Jim's mother.

[Graham] If not by your hand, then one of your crew.

Them lads are muddle-minded.

None could think so clear

to kill the cat, to free the rats,

to get the poison to kill Jim's mother.

Your mind is clear enough as such.

Thank you, Mr. Graham.

Let me ask you, Jim.

When you found your mother dead,

was her cabin door bashed in?

No.

She died of arsenic poisoning.

So how did arsenic get in her guts, I wonders?

There were two glasses.

Two glasses?

Are you sure?

Jim Hawkin. You remember everything.

She opens the door,

shares a glass with someone,

must be someone she trusts.

So if yon someone she trusts were not you, Jim,

then who?

Which other man of the Hispaniola

did your murdered mother trust?

I didn't...

Jim, I didn't--

Jim lad, shoot him dead.

How dare you. I didn't.

You have no right.

I loved Bess, and now she's gone.

[Silver chuckling]

I don't know which of you killed her,

but four handles on the chest.

No more talk of this until we have the treasure.

To the Veiled Lady, where lies Ben Gunn.

[squawks]

[haunting music]

The Veiled Lady.

We found her.

- [laughing] - Ah. Yes, Jim.

Oh...

- What? - [Jim] He should be here.

Ben Gunn, he should be here.

He should be here pointing to Hell.

[Silver] Where is he?

[Cameron] You sure this is the place?

The Veiled Lady, it must be.

[Cameron] But what now?

Without a bearing?

[grunts]

[Cameron] A marking on the stone,

something to decipher?

[squawking]

Up there.

[wind whooshing]

[distant booming, rumbling]

[Jim] Three symbols.

Upturned crescent, fire,

the Devil's Cauldron.

Captain Silver.

This way, lads. We seek a cauldron.

[dramatic music]

[Jim] The Devil's Cauldron.

Is it here?

[Cameron] This? This can't be it.

It's solid rock.

[Jim] It can be. And it is.

Mr. Silver. Pen, paper, ink.

The final part of the puzzle.

This, what we lean on, gentlemen...

it represents a cauldron, the upturned crescent,

it aligns with the volcano over yonder.

A cauldron in Hell,

where lies the treasure.

So this is Hell.

Here, where we stand.

Where on earth is the damn treasure buried?

There is something else.

Another thing.

Four things.

Words.

Transcribed in Hell by Captain Flint.

Seis Majri A Chrysos.

Jim Hawkin,

you're as fly as a weevil in a biscuit.

So, this be why you bargain for ol' Long John's life?

You needed me as much as I needed you.

The dance taught me by Billy Bones,

and you and the whole crew of the Albatross

by Captain Flint himself.

Seis Majri A Chrysos.

What does it mean, John?

Six steps to gold.

[upbeat jig playing]

Six steps to gold.

This footstep was etched into the stone by Captain Flint.

It represents the start of the dance.

[tense music]

Go on, Jim.

[upbeat strings]

One... two.

Three.

- [Cameron] Four. Five. - [Graham] Four. Five.

Six.

[music fades]

[dramatic music]

[laughing]

[thuds]

[Jim] Oh.

Keep going!

Yeah!

We done it, lads!

We done it!

[all cheering]

Look, lads, look.

This ain't just a chest of gold and silver.

It's a chest of myths and memories.

Look.

The Black Pearls of Syracuse

bound for the Queen of Abyssinia herself.

We took them Genovese for the whole hog!

A gold scepter from them Inca temples.

Louis d'Or, precious gold.

Ha-ha!

A thousand doubloons slipped from a ship.

Oh, Lord, that were a battle.

Rubies, diamonds, emeralds

for them Mughal emperors hundred wives.

Hey!

I will have the Hispaniola back and you executed as a mutineer.

No, stop, stop. Lachlan, don't shoot.

He made a coward of me!

He will pay for his actions.

That I promise you.

But think. Think.

Four handles for four men.

We need his help to get the chest back.

What, to his ship?

And his crew?

Which we will retake.

With Mr. Silver as our captive and the treasure in our hands,

the crew are ours to bargain with.

I will alter their minds of this.

Look at me, Lachlan.

I have a gift.

I can persuade any man of anything.

Look at me.

I promise you. Give me the gun.

- Thank you. - [Silver grunts]

That be the tune, is it?

To lure me with talk of brotherhood and the like

and then take from me what rightfully mine.

'Tis as well Mr. Arra were not here to see you now, Jim.

Or Billy Bones. Or your mother.

You'll get a fair trial.

[Graham] Right.

Mr. Silver, Jim,

you'll take the front.

Mr. Cameron, you and I will take the rear.

Mr. Silver, you are now our captive.

'Twas ever thus, Mr. Graham.

[Graham] On three, gentlemen. One, two, three.

[grunting]

[whizzing, thudding]

[grunting]

Carib.

[dramatic music]
