We rise.
Give up, you won't survive.
You'll never get out alive.
This world won't let you, I bet you.
And if it did, what's it gonna get
you?
What counts is how you feel inside.
Cause life's a sweet ride.
Sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet,
sweet, sweet ride.
Hey, better hang loose.
Don't come undone.
It's better to walk than run.
Each day's just something to glide on.
And each night's made to slip and slide
on.
What counts is how you feel inside.
Cause life's a sweet ride.
Sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet,
sweet ride.
Sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet,
sweet, sweet ride.
You better hang loose.
You'll never survive.
A voice such as sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet,
sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet ride.
It's just awful on the highway.
Collie, it's Thumper.
On the highway, it's Vicky.
In the paper.
Get the paper, Collie.
Hey, hey, hey, slow it down, will you,
Thumper?
You woke the old man up.
Collie, Vicky has been hurt.
She's been attacked.
They don't know if she's gonna live.
Collie, it's awful.
Hang on.
Get the paper, Collie.
Get Parker's paper.
Oh, Collie, it's awful.
She's been attacked on the highway.
She was thrown on the highway.
She's in the hospital.
They don't know if she's gonna live.
Oh, Collie, it's awful.
Let the Freud ring go.
Oh, that's unbelievable.
Oh, hurry.
Jesus, he doesn't have anyone here.
Yeah.
Where's Denny, Collie?
Denny's on the beach.
I'll, uh, I'll get him.
And, uh, listen, you called Choo Choo.
I gave him his ring back.
I can't call him.
Well, I don't care if you gave him
the ring back, honey.
You'll have to.
I don't have time.
I warned
you guys to lose that stuff.
I wanna beat these little slobs can dance
to.
Hey, man, I play what moves me.
Yeah, well, that garbage is gonna move you
right out of here.
If you don't like it, baby, bust us.
All right, baby.
Consider yourself busted.
Oh, yeah, some chick from L.A. wants
Count Basie.
On the phone.
Three times this month, Choo.
I've had it.
You gotta get another cat, you dig?
Beethoven died broke and deaf.
Least man we can all hear.
Hey.
Let's go, Martha.
Up and out.
Attack the day.
Collie.
Uh-huh?
You going somewhere?
I'm the Time Magazine Man of the Year,
and they're giving me a luncheon.
I hate time.
No big pictures.
Get dressed and get out.
The Board of Health will be here any
minute.
You were warned, Ransom.
All of you.
I told you what would happen the next
time you took my paper.
Now go and get it.
Honest, Parker, I don't have time.
It's right inside on the floor.
Excuse me.
Hold it, Ransom.
You can't run around here in your underwear
like some pervert.
That's typical of the breakdown of morals plaguing
our country.
And I'll have no part of it.
Well, I'm sorry about the shorts.
You get my newspaper, or so help me,
I'll shoot.
Go ahead.
Someday I will.
I'll blow you and your friends right off
this beach.
Why don't you go to Moscow or Peking
and run around in your shorts?
Gotta make money if he's up before noon.
Debbie!
Hey, jerk, get the hell in here.
Vicky Cartwright, where can I find you?
Emergency, but you can't go in.
Thanks, honey.
Hey, you can't go in there.
Hey, what's going on?
Come on, you guys can't come in here.
Come on, fellas.
Come on, get him out of here.
Hey, what's going on?
Come on, get out of here.
Fellas, you can't come in here.
Come on.
Come on.
Out of here.
Out of here.
Come on.
Come on.
Come on.
Come on.
What's going on?
How the hell did they get in there?
Now get him out of here, Solomon.
Come on, stay on the ball, will you?
Now hold him in there.
Come on, let's sit down, Denny.
Dennis McGuire?
That's right.
Okay, hold it.
If you want to hit someone...
Denny, what's going on here?
You know this boy, Mr. Cartwright?
Vicky wrote to us all about him.
We could only assume that he was the
one.
I see.
You fellas have any identification?
Driver's license?
We make an illegal left turn in the
hallway?
Never mind all that.
Let's have it.
Okay.
There's one for you.
And there's the other.
Come on, Denny, let's sit down.
Just hang on here a minute.
I'll be right back.
All right, McGuire?
What happened?
Bill, there's no need to talk to them.
She's my daughter, not yours.
McGuire, what happened?
Well, they split up two weeks ago and
nobody's seen her since.
Not Denny, not Choo-Choo, not me, nobody.
Just how many of you was she living
with?
78.
We're co-owners of a nationwide brothel chain.
It wouldn't surprise me in the least.
Only business has been bad since the locusts
ate our marijuana crop.
Ah, shut up.
10-4.
Jeez, what a spooky joint.
Oh, there you are.
Connie, why the hell didn't you call me
back?
She gonna be okay, Dan?
You people belong to Vicki?
I'm Thumper Stevens, a friend of hers.
Stevens?
Maybe you saw me in a magazine.
I usually fold out from the center.
No, I'm afraid not.
Thumper's an actress, like Vicki.
Oh, really?
I don't recall ever seeing...
My last film was Chained Virgin Nurse.
I closed down the theater that was playing
it.
Oh, you're the one.
Heard you sat through it three times.
Must know a lot about me.
Well, we've got a couple of real productive
citizens on our hands.
Didn't take too long to run them down.
I knew they'd been arrested before.
Oh, a few drunks.
A pile of complaints from a neighbor named
Parker.
Seems there's a trio.
We're missing a bum musician.
Wanna get on that, Solomon?
He's in Catalina.
And if you lay one clammy finger on
him, I'll take his piano and shove it...
She's marrying that bum.
Good.
They'll cancel each other out.
Let's take McGuire and Chuckles here down for
a little talk.
Come on.
We got a big police car with a
siren and everything.
Hey, wait a minute.
Do you think there's a mafia?
I mean, really.
Come on, move!
Police brutality!
I saw that!
Lousy heat.
Have a seat.
No, thanks.
I feel like standing.
Look, there's an easy and a hard way
to do this, Ransom.
Show a little sense.
Sit down.
All righty.
Hey, by the way, I didn't catch your
name.
Lieutenant Harvey Adkins.
You can call me Harvey.
Hi, Harv.
Occupation?
Play tennis.
What's your bag, Harv?
Look, why so tough, Ransom?
You could be in and out of here
in ten minutes.
Well, I don't like automatically being treated like
a bum because my clothes don't look like
yours.
And I don't like to see my friends
being pushed around for something they didn't do.
Speaking of friends, you seem to be having
a little trouble finding your age group.
I like young people.
They do such crazy things.
Like running over girls they're in love with.
Well, let me tell you something, Mr. Tennis
Player.
This is no simple hit and run.
That girl has six broken ribs and a
set of bruises that look like a relief
map of Tibet.
So why don't you find the car that
hit her instead of playing dragnet with me?
Because no car ever touched her.
She was worked over and dumped on that
highway to get hit, and before that, they
did a few other things to her.
Yeah.
Somebody worked her over real good.
Did you ever hit her?
Once.
Why?
How'd she ever get mixed up with you
anyway?
It was an accident.
It was late in the afternoon.
Collie was recovering from a four-day drunk.
Thumper had walked out on Choo-Choo.
Again.
I was outside.
I'd been watching her for a really long
time, only now she wasn't moving.
I could really sing in on her.
Man, she was just beautiful.
Hey, what's the matter, pussycat?
You got the cramps or something?
Choo?
Hey, Choo.
Let's go, man.
Hurry it up.
Dumb bird.
If she's home and letting it ring, I'm
gonna punch her in the mouth.
I'll forget, Thumper.
What about this mess?
Uh-uh.
As of midnight last night, it's not my
mess, man.
I got laundry this week.
Oh, McGuire.
Hey, McGuire.
McGuire.
It's your mess week, and we're ass-high.
She's been frozen there for the last 20
minutes.
Ever since that wave hit her.
Just figured
out why.
Oh.
Hey!
You!
Go away.
If she ever says hello to me, I'll
marry her.
Oh, poor
kid's 86ed.
Just can't stand the impact of a sight
like that.
Come on out.
It's all right.
Choo?
Nobody else
on the beach.
You'll never get a better chance.
Come on out.
Come on out.
Nobody's gonna hurt you.
Look, I've got a towel here for you.
Give it to me, for heaven's sake.
How about a drink?
Where?
Okay.
Watch that wave.
Oh!
For goodness' sake.
Here, take the towel.
Hurry, hurry.
Excuse me.
Yes, give it to me.
Towel!
Keep those LPs coming, baby.
I work a lot better to music.
Yeah, well, I play for you myself, ma
'am, but I don't think I'm gonna have
the time.
Eight to five, she plays tennis.
Did you see those ankles?
Yeah.
Hey, you know, Denny gets first call.
Huh?
Old Manny did all the work.
Well, he can have the extra sandwich.
Good afternoon.
Tis now.
Oh, uh, that's, uh, Collie Ransom.
He's our, uh, faculty advisor.
And, uh, on, uh, your left is Choo
-Choo Burns, the father of modern music.
Vicki Cartwright.
Hello.
I play piano.
Hey, man.
I didn't catch yours.
Hmm?
Oh, uh, Dennis McGuire.
Uh-huh.
Uh, I seem to need a shirt or
something.
Oh!
One shirt coming up.
Here.
After all these years, he had a clean
shirt and never told us.
You can change in my room if you
like.
That's it.
Right in there.
You guys, let's get this straight.
M-I-N-E.
Mine.
Oh, keep the faith, baby, and share the
wealth.
Now, you've got Martha.
Does a man eating spam have to turn
down steak, huh?
Yes.
No, man.
I got no obligations.
Hey, Choo, you're engaged.
That's shameful.
She gave me back the ring, remember?
She gave it right back.
She took it off her finger and just...
threw it in my face.
Thank you.
Now, where's that drink?
How about a fine French wine?
Aubreyon 23, Margaux 37.
Or possibly an Italian wine, Volpoli Celli.
Perfect.
Oh, darn, we're out.
Denny, would you be an angel and run
down to the store?
I'd be an angel.
No, Choo-Choo, you wouldn't mind going, would
you?
Really?
Would you really?
That would be great.
I'd be glad to.
He's a nice boy, a very sweet boy.
Don't you think?
Would you excuse me?
Hey!
Hey, you forgot.
We're broke.
Get the California Red with the French-looking
label, huh?
99 cents.
You see these?
Yeah.
They're as tight as wire and soft as
Kleenex, and the whole future of mankind and
music, I mean, is right here.
Okay, Casanova, but she better be here when
I get back.
Oh, she will, she will.
Just don't forget to knock when you come
in.
There's a good fella.
Go ahead.
I saw that disgusting performance out there, McGuire.
Filthy communist.
I hope you hit a police car.
Yeah?
Is it a secret?
What can I tell people?
Oh, yeah, you can tell me.
Hold him, you know, but don't squeeze him
too hard.
Ah, the most evicted musician in town.
You know, as his fiancée was saying only
the other day...
You're engaged.
Sometimes.
To Thumper Stephens.
It's real love.
An inspiration to us all.
Mr. Burns tells me you play tennis, Mr.
Ransom.
Yeah, would you care for a lesson?
You know, I'm an excellent teacher.
And with your fine athletic body, I know
that we could be back in a jiffy.
Well, that depends on...
Denny.
Who?
Denny.
Oh, yeah, Denny.
Why?
Because, man, he did all the work.
So, if you'll stop putting me on, I'll
stop putting you on.
Okay?
Touché.
Touché.
Yeah, so then Collie won the last set,
Six Love, and got the house for eight
months.
He sounds like quite an operator.
Mm-hmm, that he is.
I don't know how he keeps it up
at his age.
Listen to Brutus go to work out there.
You'd think seniority would count for something.
Call.
A phone call.
To Thumper.
Thumper.
How much farther?
Down the bottom of the hill, on the
right.
Where?
Straight ahead with that limousine?
No.
To the right, the next house.
Okay.
You swam a long way.
Go right here, huh?
Just here's fine.
Thank you for all this.
See you tonight.
Okay.
I'm sorry, wrong house.
Yeah.
All right, you guys.
Hey.
No invitations.
Two shutoffs, gas and phone.
Ooh.
Here, dummy.
I got your ring back on.
Oh, wow, it's my ring.
Hi, Thump.
How are you?
Well, only if you stop tinkling dreck out
of this black box and make some bread.
Mm-hmm.
Hey, where's Denny?
Quivering somewhere under the spell of someone named
Vickie Clodright.
The actress?
Uh...
How should I know?
Oh.
Is she fairly tall?
Brunette?
Good body?
No, it's not as good as the two
things she has.
Ah, see why I love her?
Mm-hmm.
She's a real actress, honey.
A good one.
I told you not to kiss her, Chu.
Oh, really?
Hey, Thump, Thump.
I was just putting you on, Thump.
I know.
I just like to hit him.
Hi, Thump.
Welcome back.
Funny, you don't look snowbound.
Collie.
Hey, I want to talk to you about
something, okay?
Yeah, sure, sure.
Oh.
Oh.
When it's a matter of delicate strategy, they
always come to the master.
Yeah.
I start another flick tomorrow, so I won't
be coming out for a while.
What's this one?
Suburbia Lust Queen.
I got the title role.
Oh, man, Thump.
I told you, I don't want you doing
those kind of flicks anymore.
Well, one of us has to make a
buck.
Yeah, man, but I don't want to be
married to a chick who is running around...
Listen, dummy, like I told you before, the
only way you're gonna marry me is by
knocking me up.
And until you do, you can just keep
your hands off of me.
What?
Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
Whee!
What's the problem, kid?
It sure as hell ain't that.
I made a date with Vicki for supper
tonight.
All right.
And before I knew what I was saying,
I said, I'd take her to Scandia.
I'm serious.
I'm really serious.
Listen...
Scandia?
Hey, man, you've got to be crazy, Denny.
I figure I'm gonna need at least 50
bucks.
50?
Sure.
Why not 500?
Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
Well, how do you feel?
Why?
Because you're gonna have to hustle Dennis with
a hangover.
You know what I'm gonna call you?
Selfish.
Selfish McGuire.
There I was last night, all by myself,
but no, you wouldn't share.
Don't put me down for that, Collie.
This girl's different.
She's really special.
Special?
I told you, that's the first lesson I
gave you, Denny.
There are no special chicks, baby.
I told you that.
Chick is a chick.
What's the matter, Collie?
Getting out of shape?
I'm getting out of shape?
Yeah.
All right.
I'm gonna show you something.
Getting out of shape.
Watch this, baby.
Three, four...
You gotta go to the courts today.
Eight, nine, ten, eleven.
Please.
Forget it, Collie.
She's mine.
Forgotten.
Any other fruit on the tree today?
Yeah, a kid out of New York who
thinks he can play him.
I'd take him myself, but I got a
match with Brady Caswell, big-time producer.
Usually worth a C-note to me.
Mm-hmm.
Uh, this kid doesn't figure to bite for
more than 50.
Well, that's enough.
How's his game?
The jury's still out in his backhand.
He's got a floater's serve, so I'll play
him on concrete.
Right.
I'll be with you in a second, Bronson.
Hope you play better than you did last
week.
Who's that?
Caswell.
I missed a shot last week, and he
almost split my skull open with his racket.
Sounds cute.
Hi there.
Uh, that's it.
Mm-hmm.
Beautiful.
Got you a good game here, Bobby.
Collie Ransom here.
Take it easy, Collie.
He's very sensitive.
Oh, come on.
Forget it, Gene.
I need a good game, not exercise.
Listen, I might just be able to beat
you.
I played in some tournaments, you know.
Eastern tournaments?
Mm-hmm.
Gee, I'm scared to death.
Well, I'll bet you $10 I win the
set.
50 says you don't win a game.
Well, that's just great.
Well, go get a secord.
Or is concrete too fast for you?
Well, we'll soon find out, won't we?
We sure will.
Pretty crude, Collie.
You could have lost him.
Are you kidding?
I couldn't have scared him off with bad
breath, Gene.
Hey, I dig your girl's hat, Gene.
Like I said, no tie, no jacket, no
table.
Forget the tip.
It's you.
Who'd you think it was?
Just a good kisser.
Move over.
I'll drive.
Hello, Miss Cartwright.
Hi, Johnny.
Hi, Johnny.
Listen, will you park my limousine for me,
please?
Be careful not to scratch it.
Here's something for you.
Thank you.
Come in.
Do you like it?
I thought you said you were just starting
out.
I did, but my folks helped me out.
Do they live in L.A.? Santa Barbara.
I don't see them too much anymore.
Never, as a matter of fact.
You know, I've been talking about myself for
the last three hours and I don't know
a thing about you.
Nothing much to tell.
Rather dull and unspectacular, in fact.
Why don't you come and sit here?
Well, do you actually own this?
Or do you rent it, or what?
I'm in the construction business.
Oh.
Denny.
Stop it, Denny.
Stop it.
Denny, I can't.
Please.
Denny, stop it.
Please.
Please.
I can't.
I'm sorry.
Not in this house.
Not here.
I can't.
It's only a phone, that's right.
Denny, I'm sorry.
Not here.
No.
Let me tell you something about me.
Whatever I do, whatever I say, that's straight,
on the level.
Now, that's the least I expect from you.
Maybe you expect too much.
No, babes.
That's the minimum.
Look.
Answer your phone.
No.
I was out.
None of your damn business.
Was it a hit or a miss?
Miss.
Miss.
There's two chicks there somewhere.
Which one am I paying for?
Neither anymore.
Here.
It's finished.
Looks like Scandia's prices have gone down, Den.
Hey, Betts.
Give the young man a drink, will you?
A beer.
I need some more wine.
Among other things, honey.
Someone's opened the zoo again.
This place runs fast.
Hey, fellas, sweet.
Got us three civilians over there.
How about that?
I got some civilians, you know.
What the hell over there?
Civilians?
Civilians.
That's a funny bit, man.
Oops.
We're running a little late, folks.
Gotta go.
Come on, Martha.
Bright and early tomorrow morning.
Chooch, let's go.
Have a beer on me.
Pardon.
I love your deodorant.
Excuse us.
Excuse us.
Easy, easy, easy.
Peace on earth and goodwill towards men.
Let's go.
Excuse us.
That's it.
Choo.
Choo, come on.
Watch your hands.
Hey, man.
You know, you guys could have got killed
trying to protect something she lost a long
time ago.
Hey, Ransom, get the door, will you?
Somebody!
Hey!
The door!
No starch.
Thanks.
Can I at least come in to change?
Yeah, sure.
There's the bathroom.
And if you want any suntan lotion, you'll
find it right over there, top drawer, left
-hand side.
You can change in here if you want
to.
It's my room.
I think you'll find everything you need.
If I do, I may never leave.
Well, I don't think you'll ever be asked
to.
Is that who I think it is?
Yeah.
Well, what's this about staying?
Now, no chick stays here on a permanent
basis.
You know that.
Not Thumper.
Not even me.
Precisely.
C'est vrai?
C'est vrai.
C'est vrai.
This is different, Collie.
Nothing's different, baby.
Not here in Havana.
Boys Town.
Hi, Lou Baby.
No, I don't...
Oh, hold on, will you?
Vic, it's Lou Baby.
I keep telling you, Lou, no business down
here.
Leave a message on the service.
What?
Yes, we're coming tonight.
Goodbye.
Agents.
He's more persistent this week.
Who?
Lou.
Lou Baby.
Oh, my series starts next week.
Oh?
Damn it.
Why damn it?
Do you see these?
Oh, yeah.
Why damn it?
Damn what?
The series.
Up every morning at 5, 14 hours work
a day.
Uh-huh.
I won't be able to spend much time
down here.
I only hoped Danny understands.
Sounds like you haven't told him yet.
Well, I don't know exactly how.
Why?
I didn't know it went that deep.
Spell it out, Collie.
Deep.
D-E-E-P.
Deep.
Spell it out, Collie.
Well, I don't know.
This whole thing, he's, uh...
Well, he's just taking it pretty seriously, that's
all.
Well, I hope so.
What?
I hope so.
Oops, wrong pad.
Hey, Thumper.
Collie.
Hi, babes.
What happened?
Somebody die something?
I'd like you to meet a very good
friend of the boys.
Meet the giant in our washer, the dove
in our kitchen, and the crown on our
heads.
Vicki Cartwright, Thumper Stevens.
Do you have to look like that?
It's nice to finally meet you.
Where's Mortimer Schneid?
He's out on the deck, sunning like an
iguana.
All right, you guys.
Mail call.
Right.
Ransom.
Yes, sir.
Gas company.
McGuire.
On the beach.
I'll take it.
Parker.
Parker?
Parker?
I'll take it.
Good boy.
Burns.
Oh, excuse me.
Excuse me.
Yeah, sure.
Thumper Stevens.
Hi, Demi.
You're pregnant?
No.
Can't be my fault.
Why, you...
Oh, Thumper, it's no foul.
No.
Thumper.
You're frigid.
You're nothing but a frigid old broad.
I could drop one in a field.
Oh, yeah.
What about you, Collie?
What?
Nobody special?
Ever?
Oh, one divorce, several emotional wastes.
Prospects?
Only one.
Dim it, that.
Hey, but I'm happy.
Not getting involved with others is the nicest
thing I can do for them.
That holds true for lots of people.
Remember that.
Do you believe that?
You bet.
I don't even own my own life, Vic.
I just kind of rented out from somewhere.
Now, what about you?
Help!
That sounds like Thumper.
Hmm.
You're chasing them.
That's what you are, chasing.
You're the one...
No, Thumper, no.
Whoa.
Chew, my God, I killed him.
Chew, baby.
Don't worry.
There's a mandatory aid count.
Oh.
And Deborah Carr is from here to eternity.
Ransom, if you can't keep those degenerates down,
the police will.
Well, I do my level best, Estes.
Oh, by the way, you haven't met Miss
Samovar.
Natasha is a foreign exchange student from the
Soviet Union.
Strasche.
A Bolshevik communist.
Come on, Butch.
Oh, for a young girl, you are very,
very quick.
Come.
Let's meet my friends on the beach.
Sure.
All right,
flower children.
A little something to lift your respective afternoons.
The Moby Grape are opening at the Tarantula
tonight, and you are all invited.
I said the Moby Grape are opening at
the Tarantula tonight, and you are all invited.
Well, just knock on your boards if you
understand, kiddies.
Stuka's been dive-bombing all day long.
Yeah, and Denny's gonna take the Stuka.
I've been waiting two years for this.
Excuse me.
And Denny take him?
Like Arnold Palmer on a miniature golf course.
Oh.
I want
you.
I'm sure.
Whoo!
Boy, it sure is wild out there.
Yeah, I dig your suit.
Did you have a cigarette?
Make sure Vicky's at the studio in the
morning.
Uh-huh.
Caswell doesn't like to be stood up.
Who?
Caswell.
Is that Brady Caswell?
That's the Caswell.
Uh-huh.
You know him?
Yeah, I've seen him around.
He's a producer.
I don't care about the studio.
I must have these two boys over.
Denny, don't get involved.
Now, believe me.
Come on, let's have some fun.
Papa, Martha, come on, let's dance.
...to go
away for a few days.
...to go away for a few days.
Hey, you got cold hands.
Sorry.
Denny, go away just for a few days.
Where?
Home.
I thought you said you split with your
folks.
Well, my stepmother's ill, and my father wants
me to go back.
When did you find out about this?
Last night, on the service.
Why didn't you tell me?
I...
You know something?
What?
I don't believe you.
It's true.
Anyway, I don't have to.
Hey, relax.
I'm gonna
miss you.
Hey, maybe I should go along with you.
I have to meet your folks sooner or
later.
Oh?
Yeah, you never know.
I might want to marry you one of
these days.
Does that bother you when I say that?
Let's talk about it when I get back,
okay?
Okay.
You know, you're really strange.
I mean, one minute you're with me, and
the next minute you just fade away.
Thought you said you were leaving.
I did.
I said later.
Please do not feed or annoy the animals.
Hey, cool it, Vic.
Vic, did you hear me?
I said cool it.
Hold it, scum!
Off my beach!
Now!
Believe me!
Parker!
I'll get a medal.
They probably murdered someone.
Hey, we invited them here, Parker.
They're our guests.
Yeah, man!
Hey, Parker, you pull that trigger, and they'll
send you away for life.
I mean that.
What are you doing on my property, Parker?
Do you realize you're trespassing?
You crossed the picket fence.
Do you realize that?
I'm going to call the cops on you.
That's what I'm going to do.
I'm going to call the cops.
Now, just leave.
Go ahead, Parker.
Go ahead.
Just leave.
That's it.
Here you go.
Hey, thanks, man.
I was about ready to spill his guts
out all over the beach.
Ah, it was nothing.
Forget it.
Uh, this is Scratch, Big Jane.
I'm Mr. Clean.
Perfect.
I dig your service station, man.
Hey, Mr. Clean.
Now, you better cool it, huh?
Hey, there's no need to get uptight, man.
You got any grass?
No, I'm sorry.
We're fresh out, man.
It's too bad.
Big Jane here, she does tricks for grass.
You never saw anything like it.
Yeah, well, I wish you could all stay,
but we've only got three lamb chops.
Hey, Big Jane, what would you do for
lamb chops?
I don't know.
I never saw one.
Hey, Papa, you want to hear my show?
You sure we know each other well enough?
Hey, I think maybe Daddy Warbucks just called
the heat.
Let's split.
Hey, don't worry, man.
You're legal here.
Yeah, according to the heat, man, we ain't
legal nowhere.
Of course, if I could find myself a
good reason to stay.
You know, it just doesn't seem to me
that any one man could make that sit
still very long.
Scratch?
We accept your apology, man.
What?
We accept your apology.
Oh!
Yeah, sure, man.
Sure.
What the hell did you do that for?
I don't know.
It was getting dull around here.
I thought we'd get some jollies.
Hey!
Am I changing colors or something?
I don't know.
Well, please stop staring at me.
It's part of your business, isn't it?
Being stared at?
It is possible to leave this little cocoon
for a few days without suffering any ill
effects.
There are even people who have never put
foot on a piece of wood in the
ocean.
Implausible as it may sound.
Now, I don't want you folks to get
hysterical or anything, but my boy here has
got himself a job.
Las Vegas, no less.
Yeah, I got a three-week gig at
the Roulette Lounge.
I start in ten days.
Hey, congratulations, Chew.
Thanks.
Congratulations, Chew-Chew.
Thank you.
Where's Collie?
I don't know.
You might try the beach.
Okay.
Come on.
Hey.
Come back, huh?
I will.
Chew's got a job in Las Vegas.
Let's go down and see him, huh?
I got a confession, Chew.
Huh?
Got a confession to make.
I stole a letter from you.
Why?
Well, you're not gonna like it.
I don't even know why I held on
to it.
Here.
Yeah, man.
I've been drafted.
I have been drafted.
Yeah.
You've been drafted.
Ooh.
Well, there goes my gig.
And there goes Las Vegas, yes.
And there goes my life.
And there goes you.
And...
Chew, baby, it's only for two years.
Oh, thumper.
Two years?
All right, gentlemen, you will form two lines,
beginning with the first letter in your last
name, from A to L on the left,
from M to Z on the right.
If you will remove your letters from your
envelopes, you'll expedite matters.
From A to L on the left, from
M to Z on the right.
Did you get your letter from the Army
or the WACs?
It's called Joyful Morning.
You like it?
Yeah, sensational.
All right, men, let's shape up in this
line.
If you remove your letters from your envelopes...
Are you crazy?
You get that dust mop out of here.
Now you've done it.
You've upset him.
I'll show you who's upset.
Are you fond of this dog?
He's never left my side, sir.
He'd die without me.
Indeed.
Do you work?
Oh, I don't like too much.
Mother kind of takes care of the money,
and Hubert here eats like a bird.
A little bird, sir.
And we sleep together on the floor.
On a mattress, of course.
I want him to think of me as
a friend, like those two Greeks, Damon and
Perkilles.
Pythias.
Excuse me, sir.
The name of the friend, Pythias.
If you say so, sir.
Tell me, how do you feel about the
Army Burns?
Oh, I'm anxious to serve, sir.
I really am.
Of course, if Hubert can come along.
Well, that's hardly possible.
Oh, but, sir, he'd be such a big
help.
You know, digging in the tunnels out of
those communists and things like that.
Do you ever go out on dates, Mr.
Burns?
Dates?
With girls.
Oh, once or twice, sir, but it wasn't
very much fun.
Besides, Hubert's not allowed in most restaurants.
I see.
Well, that'll be all for now, Mr. Burns.
You mean I can go home now, sir?
That's right.
You're very kind, sir.
Say, after the man, Hubert.
He's a little shy.
Well, after all, he barely knows me.
Burns, 249736B.
Recall in 90 days, without dog.
Assign special services.
Yahoo!
You're a good little dog.
Vicki!
Hey, Vicki!
Will it just be a moment?
Can I help you?
Yes, I'm looking for Vicki Cartwright.
Oh, she's sitting right over there with her
back to us at that table.
Oh, you must be Dennis McGuire.
Brady Caswell.
Sorry to barge in on your lunch like
this, but we did have a few things
to discuss.
That's all right.
Well, I'll be running along now.
Nice to have met you, Mr. McGuire.
Remember what I said.
What did he say?
I beg your pardon?
Caswell, what did he say?
Oh, nothing much, really.
Nothing important anyway.
Colley says Choo-Choo saw you in town
when you were supposed to be in Santa
Barbara.
Did he?
He was wrong.
Colley says Choo-Choo had a really good
look.
It was not me.
Choo-Choo is not a liar.
We're going to Vegas for Choo's opening.
Are you going to be there?
I don't think I can.
What's that?
What?
That.
Go, Dick.
How did it happen?
It's a burn.
That's not a burn.
Who did it?
I did it myself this morning.
It's a burn.
Look, I'm asking you a question.
I don't owe you any answers.
I'll tell him you're here, Miss Cartwright.
Aren't you supposed to be on the set?
Just what the hell did you say to
him?
Very little, actually.
I just asked him if he was the
one who gave you the bruises on your
arm.
I want out.
Now.
Out of what?
Everything.
The series, you.
Don't be childish, Vicki.
I'm going to Las Vegas with him tomorrow.
That's it.
Cut, dried and finished.
My, such strength.
Cheap at $35 an hour.
Yes, I know about the analyst thing.
That's no answer for you.
You have no alternatives in this game.
Otherwise, I wouldn't play.
It's over.
You have a contract with me.
Airtight.
You walk and I sue.
Complete with stories of your unprofessional behavior.
Sue.
You know, it's a little sad, but I
really believe you'd let me.
You realize, of course, that exposing me would
mean exposing yourself as a whore.
It might just be worth it.
Now, let's get to the heart of the
problem.
McGuire.
Young McGuire.
You really wouldn't want me to call him
and tell him things about you and me,
would you?
Save your dime.
I'll deliver the message myself.
Hey, Winnie the Pooh, get away.
Grab him and we'll put the little lady
in heaven.
Is that your money on the six, sir?
Thank you.
What's with Wyatt Earp and Thumper?
Well, he started to teach her how to
play.
Winner!
Looks like they picked up 500 apiece.
Yeah.
He's gonna pick up a spilled gut if
he grabs her again.
He's got a lot of gut to pick
up, too.
I gotta go on.
Guess what?
I'm ready.
The car is waiting, monsieur.
Après vous.
Why did you come here?
Pardon?
I mean, why did you come here?
Wouldn't you prefer to be somewhere with someone
else?
No.
I want to be here with you.
Come on, come on.
Who is he?
Hmm?
Choo-choo did see you in town, didn't
he?
Yes, he did.
So, uh, you weren't in Santa Barbara with
your parents.
No, Denny, I wasn't.
That, uh, time I took you home that
first morning.
It was the wrong house, wasn't it?
Yes.
Who is he?
There's time for that.
Yeah, there's time, all right.
There's time right now.
Look, that's really finished.
And I'm here.
Isn't that enough for now?
No.
Denny, I wanted us to have fun this
weekend.
For things to be the way they were.
Well, I don't know how things were.
And do you know why?
It's because you have not told me the
truth once about anything.
Not since the first day we met.
So I don't know how things were.
Why don't you tell me how things were?
Hmm?
I will tell you.
And the truth.
Believe me.
But not now, please, Denny.
You know, this is the closest I've been
to you all evening.
Denny!
I once knew a girl named Vicki Cartwright.
Whatever happened to her?
Denny!
That must be them.
They're waiting for us.
Denny!
Denny!
Just for once!
Please!
Denny!
No, stop it!
Denny, please!
Denny!
Get off me!
Move back, everybody.
The little lady is coming out.
Oh, that's cold!
Thanks, Thumper.
It was a damn rock and roll.
Oh!
You too?
You don't have to play it no more.
You don't want to.
This may not be the time or the
place, but I'm pregnant!
You are third.
Denny!
Vic?
Hey, come on, kids.
Vic?
Vic, what the hell happened?
Where's Denny?
Golly, would you please take me home?
Well, yeah, sure.
Sure, honey.
Only, uh, what happened to Denny?
Denny's gone.
I have no idea where.
I'm sorry, kid.
I'm really sorry.
That's my depart for being sorry.
I shouldn't have come up here.
I knew it wouldn't work.
Hey, Vic, tell me something.
You've been seeing someone else, haven't you?
Tell me.
Vic?
I've got to go and get cleaned up.
No, no, fine.
You know, I told you a long time
ago that it wouldn't work, that Denny was
just a kid.
You see, Vic, there's a little hitchhiker called
Responsibility that comes with a relationship.
If he hasn't met him yet.
Meaning?
The meaning that I have.
Collie, do you know what you're saying?
Oh, I know what I'm saying, Vic.
I know what I'm saying.
The funny thing is, you don't want me,
not really.
With him in the house, you're looked up
to.
I take him away and you're a bum
with one worshipper.
You want to go to bed with me
so you can tell him, so you can
seal it off for good.
Well, you couldn't even spell Responsibility.
Hey, um, look, let's forget it.
I'll take you home.
Wait, Collie!
Just, just go away.
Leave me alone.
I'm really tired of meeting the same man
over and over again.
Look, I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
Anyway, that's it.
Collie says he pleaded with her to let
him take her home, but she wouldn't have
anything to do with it.
She just kept screaming things about me.
That's the last time any of us saw
her until the hospital.
Well, that checks out with Ransom's account.
Ever see any more of that motorcycle gang?
No.
Why?
Well, I hear they had a party at
the beach that night.
You know anything about it?
No, nothing.
Okay, McGuire, you can go.
That's doubles, Barry.
Game, set, and match.
Hiya, Dan.
It's too bad, Barry.
Good try.
You know what you're into me for?
Not exactly.
I make it about, uh...
Oh, about $1,500.
I think you're a hustler.
Collie.
Uh, look, come here, Barry.
I want to tell you something.
Now, tennis is my game.
I've been playing it every day of my
life for the past 25 years.
I play it as well as I can.
So do you.
And besides, it wasn't my idea to play
for money.
I didn't hear you objecting.
Well, look, I'm sorry.
Like hell.
No, really, I am.
Hey, listen, Barry, I've got an idea.
Now, look, we've been playing my game, right?
Okay.
How about playing your game?
Now, if you want to even it up
a little, we could, uh, oh, I don't
know, shoot foul shots or something.
I don't need any favors.
Collie, could you give me a minute?
I have to talk to you.
I'll give you a minute.
I haven't been on a court in five
years, but you're a sure loser.
Maybe.
What do you say?
Hmm?
Ten fouls?
Double or nothing tonight?
Whatever's fair, Barry.
You know, Collie, you're a real sport.
I gotta hand it to you.
Just try to even the score, Barry.
Your friendship's worth a lot more than money
to me, boy.
Collie, I said I wanted to talk to
you.
Can we play now, Collie?
Thanks for waiting for me at the station,
pal.
Oh, yeah, well, uh, listen, Dan, the, uh,
did the, uh, did he give you any
trouble?
They think the freaks did it.
That's what I wanted to talk to you
about.
Oh, now, look, kid, what happened, it's sad,
but, uh, let it go, okay?
Collie.
Look, I've got your gun in the car.
I'm gonna find Mr. Clean.
Hey, don't be a jackass.
I want you to come with me.
No way, Danny, just stop it.
No way.
I'm going anyway.
I just thought you might want to come
along.
Hey, Danny!
Are you through?
I'm through, baby.
Look, honey, um, something big has come up.
I've gotta run.
But you said you'd play with me.
Well, I will, sweetheart, I will tonight.
Lots of games.
Excuse me.
Hi, Collie.
Hi, Freckles.
Oops, I'm sorry.
Excuse me.
Danny, hey, Danny, come here.
Now, look, I'll go with you on one
condition.
The gun stays in the car, okay?
Okay, come on, let's go.
You're like Gary Cooper entering an Indian village.
I'm gonna get the gun.
Stay right here, you'll never make it to
the door.
Just cool it, Danny.
Bats, let's have two beers.
Okay, Mr. Ransom.
Three.
See Mr. Clean around tonight?
Mr. Who?
Right.
Let me buy you one.
You just did.
Oh, that's right, I forgot.
I'm sorry.
You wanna take a bath?
It's only been two months.
I'm just getting ripe.
Hey, you know something?
The acne queen is right.
Dumbo, you stink.
Hey, man, cool it!
Hey, come on, cool it!
Cool it, man!
Cool it!
This is a party!
And these are our guests.
Diablo, you stomp him, man, and we got
the heat all over us again like a
hot sauce, you dig?
Come on.
Why don't you grab a handful of biscuits
and a big Jane and take a walk?
Hey, man, don't mess around like that, huh?
It was either you or Blue Craws.
Thanks, man.
Forget it, I owe you.
Bats, give us a few, huh?
Say, I read about the spinach over at
your pad.
Is she gonna be okay?
Read a lot, do you?
Well, I never made it to college, man,
but I try very hard to please Mom
and Dad.
Do you ever see her again?
Who, the spinach man?
Never.
You?
No.
That's why we're asking you.
Oh, yeah.
You never saw her again, huh?
Well, I'll see you guys around, huh?
You going somewhere?
Haven't you heard?
I'm the mystery guest on What's My Line.
Big?
How about that?
Hey, man, Mr. Crane just bought you a
beer.
Yeah, so he did.
Let's have our beer.
Hey, Bats, could you bring our beer to
us, please?
Easy, man, very easy.
Yeah.
Hey.
You guys want something with Mr. Crane?
Could be.
Why don't we take some fresh air and
talk about it, okay?
Come on, outside.
Man, that's enough, man.
That's enough.
Oh!
Oh!
Now what
do you think, man?
What do we think?
Man, man, I didn't even make a move
for her, man.
Oh, oh.
Like we were just partying on the beach,
man.
I mean, we were blowing our minds, man.
Like on all kinds of stuff.
All of a sudden...
I hear the scream, man.
And she appears.
She comes out from, like, nowhere, man.
It was so weird.
Hey, Scratch?
Everybody splits.
Hey, come on, now.
What else?
Nothing, man, nothing.
It's just like I told you, man.
When I got through over there, I was
scared, so I wrapped her up in this
blanket and I left.
But I did not harm her, man.
It's exactly the way I said she did
it all.
Is that straight?
Straight, man, straight.
It was pretty weird.
She just kept looking back at this house
all the time.
What house?
The one with the big window.
She just kept staring back at this house
and moaning about how she wanted to die,
you know.
I mean, if you want to kick off,
that's one fantastic way to go, huh?
Oh, that was the greatest night of my
life.
No more, Danny, no more.
Come on, come on.
Let's go, Danny, come on, let's go.
I know where that house is, Collie.
It's right next to the one where I
dropped her off that first morning.
And you figure that'll help her?
Don't be a kid, Danny.
It's too late for that.
I'm gonna kill him.
No, you're not gonna kill anybody.
We're going back to the house and I'm
going to change for the gym and that's
it.
Now, stop that.
You're not going to do that.
Danny, will you give me that?
I have had in my mind only one
thought.
Please, Armando.
I have my reputation to think of.
I also have an obligation to someone I
love.
But, Carita...
I'm not another word.
I'm just not that kind of a girl.
Oh, you Englishwoman and your middle-class morality.
You're passing up a great chance of happiness,
Carita.
Sometimes we have to pass up many things
in life that seem most desirable in the
world.
Speak of desire for them all, mine for
you.
If I could only be sure you meant
what you say.
Caswell!
You made it impossible to believe anyone.
Trust me, Carita.
So many men have told me that.
So many promises.
And so few kept.
But I will give my promise.
I love another.
Who?
Someone who loves me.
Then I am that man.
You, that's all.
I'm not ashamed of that.
But I need more.
I'm finished with casual affairs.
And that's all it would ever be with
us.
I can't keep on giving myself away and
getting nothing in return.
I've done that and it means nothing.
Someday, that man will be there.
He'll look at me I'll tell you what
I'll do.
To show you I'm all heart, I'll go
first.
I knew I was right about you, Barry.
Shoot, baby.
Concede?
I might just as well.
Sure is a snappy, Barr.
Barr, Barr.
Barry, go ahead.
Wow.
You don't even have to take aim.
It's fantastic.
Wait a minute, Barr.
Let's see that.
Oh, no, that's all right.
Excuse me.
Hard cheese, Barry.
Barry, your foot's over the line.
That's better, thanks.
Lucky for you, I'm no good, Barry.
Barry.
Please go away.
Look, I have to see her.
She doesn't want to see you, and if
she did, I wouldn't permit it.
Let him come in.
Bill, you can't be serious.
I mean, you're not going to let him
see her.
No, of course not.
Come this way, McGuire.
There's no sense in making this any more
unpleasant than it is already.
My point is simple.
She stopped seeing you long before this happened.
She didn't want to then, and she doesn't
want to now.
Won't you...
Won't you please leave us alone?
Look, call the police if you like.
They'll come and take me away, but I'll
come right back.
Vic, Vic, it's true with that kind of
life.
I don't care what the doctor said.
I'm fine.
Oh, babes.
Stay away.
Don't you think you should be in bed?
I want to see him.
I don't need your pity.
You don't have to be here.
I didn't come here out of pity.
Of course.
Listen to me.
I did something to you in Vegas, which
I'm very sorry for.
I also know about that night on the
beach.
It doesn't matter.
It's strange.
Funny, even.
You're the only one who deserved an explanation.
I tried to tell you in Las Vegas,
but couldn't.
I can't even do it now.
It was real for us, wasn't it?
I wanted it to be.
It's all right, Denny.
I'm sorry.
It's over, McGuire.
I'll be back.
Yeah.
Hey, Chu.
Hey, Chu.
What?
Well, I could have told you that, babe.
Yeah, man.
I could have told you that.
Hey, now, look.
You just forget it.
Forget her.
Forget the whole thing.
Are you kidding?
With the dwarves, let Snow White come back.
Yeah.
Hey, there's an army-type letter here for
you.
Must be a goof-off classification.
Yeah.
Hey, pussycat.
Where have you been?
Did you show any mercy?
Or was it both ears and the tail?
I'm leaving, Cully.
You're leaving?
Yeah, I'm going back into Santa Monica.
I'm going to work in the hardware store
for a while.
Uh-huh.
In the hardware, you're going to get a
job in the hardware.
Then what?
I don't know yet.
He doesn't know yet.
You know, you're ready for the ya-ya,
man.
Do you know that?
Hey, Cully, I got a big surprise for
you.
What's this?
What's this, baby?
3,000 bananas.
That's rent for years.
Look at this.
Come here.
What's this, baby?
Huh?
When she turns over, zap!
You'll want to stay forever, baby.
Yeah.
Hey, and besides, Chew's coming back.
Yeah, he's coming right back.
I thought he was getting married.
Ah, you see, that's the whole story.
She's not pregnant.
She just said that to hook him.
But then again, I don't have to tell
you what chicks can make you do, right?
Boy.
Hey, what's the matter, kid?
You're in some kind of trouble.
There's no trouble, Cully.
I'm leaving.
Oh, come on.
Listen, I won't need this anymore.
Hey, you know two birds found your board
floating on the water, and they said they
would be back?
Hey, man, if you'd seen them, you'd wait.
You know, you can't do this!
It's not going to be that easy to
come back!
Hey, all right.
All right, all right.
At least talk to me.
Give me a reason.
Go ahead.
Man, the really sad part is that you
don't think I've got a reason.
Do you, Cully?
What are you talking about?
Hey, what do you mean by that?
Huh?
Can't you see what's happening, Cully?
Everyone's growing up all around me while I
blink on that board.
Everyone except you and Chew.
Hey, you're gone.
I mean, you're totally crackers, kid.
You know that?
Hey, have you been up to see her?
Is that what it is?
Because no matter what she told you, I
never did anything to harm you.
Understand me, Denny?
Nothing.
She didn't say a thing about you.
Look, I'm tired of looking at myself at
40.
I'm sorry.
Don't ever be sorry for anything, kid.
Nothing.
This time, I've had it!
I've warned you time and time again!
Now, stop right there!
I mean it!
I think I want to shoot you.
Well, I'm with you.
From now on, no more Mr. Nice Guy.
I'm serious.
You pushed me!
Ah!
Give up, you won't survive.
You'll never get out alive.
This world won't let you, I bet you.
And if it did, what's it gonna get
you?
What counts is how you feel inside.
Cause life's a secret.
Ooh!
Ooh!
Ain't it cool?
Ooh!
What you got?
Cheese!

world premiere of the Fox Searchlight release I
Think I Love My Wife.
I've been married close to seven years.
My wife is beautiful, intelligent, and a great
mother.
There's just one problem.
We're bored out of our minds.
Inspired by the classic French film Chloe in
the Afternoon, this modern update tells the story
of an unsatisfied married man whose life gets
turned upside down when his fantasies turn to
flirtation.
And cut!
Chris Rock writes, directs, produces, and even stars
in this romantic comedy.
We asked the cast and crew about the
process of working with a quadruple threat.
Chris Rock wears so many hats in this
movie.
Actor, writer, producer, director.
Where is his focus when you're performing with
him?
His focus is on the scene.
His focus is playing and creating this great
tennis match with whoever he happens to be
in the scene with.
He was always present.
When he was a director, he was present
as a director.
When he was playing producer, he was present
as a producer.
When he was acting, he was right there
with us.
It was lovely.
He just desperately wants to get it right.
He's driven.
He's driven to do the stuff he wants
to do.
He wants to tell stories.
I'm really proud of him.
I think he did a great job.
She's just a friend.
Friend?
Come on.
I've had friends before.
They don't look like Nikki.
I like working with actor-directors.
I'm one myself, so I like when I
see other actors doing it as well.
It's important to have a guy who's in
charge who can keep the set fun because
it is work.
Chris is great at both those things.
He gets the work done, and he keeps
it fun.
We asked if Chris was open to script
changes and improvisation.
Chris is a really generous, creative guy.
To him, whoever says the funniest thing, that's
what gets in.
After working on it for as long as
he has, and it being his baby, he
was still open to us, the actors, and
saying, if we can do it, go for
it.
Let's do it that way.
It was a wonderfully collaborative experience.
What's wrong with my panties?
They're huge!
The biggest thing on a pair of panties
should be the tag.
It's like playing around with the kids all
day.
You're both in the mud trying to figure
out what is in the mud.
I found it!
Tape it!
Go!
Did you feel like you were able to
be a part of that process?
Absolutely.
More so than any project.
I sort of felt like, I've donated a
lot to this film.
Richard is a responsible guy.
He was always trying new stuff.
But for me, the script was so wonderful
that I got everything I needed from the
script.
I just liked to be surprised at what
he would throw out.
It was fun.
He was the real comic voice.
He did a lot of versions of different
stuff.
Do you think that guy's funny?
Chris Rock?
Yeah, he's pretty funny.
We wanted to know the challenges to being
a quadruple threat.
You don't get any sleep when you direct.
You're the first guy on the set.
You're the last guy to leave.
No sleep.
What are the advantages?
You can cast who you want to cast.
You can pick your music and your lights
and your sets and your wardrobe and all
that stuff.
Honey, why don't you get these?
I like them.
Oh, yeah.
Let's find your size.
Since this is Chris' second foray behind the
camera, we wanted to know what he's learned
since his directorial debut.
I learned that freebasing's bad.
I don't know.
This is my second one I've directed.
I got through all my rough patches on
head of stage.
This one went pretty smooth.
Clearly, Chris Rock rose to the many challenges
of acting, directing, writing, and producing.
He certainly raises the bar when it comes
to multitasking.
From Fox Movie Channel, I'm Tava Smiley.
Thanks for watching.
We need a minute of time for a
dead cop.
You're establishing a timeline for Vic on the
night of the murder.
He's not going without a fight.
What do you want me to do?
You've murdered two of your own team members.
You just stepped onto an entirely new playing
field.
I hope you know the rules of the
game.
