Rise and shine, Stepson.
What's going on? It's not even Memorial Day.
But do you know what the next day is?
Military school?
Yes, sir.
And no yawning. There is no time to be tired. Listen, this takes commitment.
I figured this day I would give you a few of the tips that I use whenever I
was in the military.
Maybe give you a good little workout. The workout that I used to use every
single day.
Listen up. Pull your phone out. I want you to record me.
Alright.
Alright.
First things first, we warm up.
Get that camera for me. There we go.
We're going to warm up. Get our arms all nice and stretched out.
Just like that.
Up over the head.
It's always good when you can feel that deep stretch.
Then, we're going to stretch out.
our back.
All right, we're gonna reach down, you'll feel it all the way up through
your spine.
Just like that. Oh, what a great stretch, huh?
It's important to be nice and warmed up from those hard workouts the military is
going to put you through every single day.
And to the middle, just like that.
Up and stretch over your head, just like that.
It helps to go down.
We do a downward tuck, like so, just like that. Oh, good
stretch all the way through.
Another one I like really loosens up the hips.
You can feel it right there in your glutes. Really puts those glutes on
fire, doesn't it?
Just like that.
These are a few of my favorites.
Do this again.
Feel it right here.
Loosen up those hips, tighten up those glutes.
You'll be able to run five miles in no time.
All right, I am tired.
Need a little break. I am not as limber as I used to be.
How about I take a look at that video you made, huh?
Okay. You want to watch this with me? Of course.
All right.
Good stretch. You see that? How it pulls on those lats right there?
Mm-hmm.
Stretches everything out.
It's important to stretch.
It really is so you don't tear your muscles or anything.
There you go, just like that. All the way down.
Are you following along?
Yeah, I can see the video.
Do you have any questions for me?
As far as the video or as far as military school? Military school. Any
questions about the video, military school?
Well, how long is military school for usually?
Um, I don't remember. It was different back in my day. What is it now for you?
Do you know? Um, I think they said a couple of years. Oh, is it? Okay.
Well, maybe I'm wrong.
I honestly didn't pay too much attention.
Well, I know that my day was different. I think it was probably a little bit
longer than what it is for you guys. They fast track it nowadays.
Any other questions you might have?
Well,
are the instructors mean?
You don't want to get on their bad side. How about we say that?
Just do what you're supposed to do when you're told to do it, and you should be
just fine.
Great. Thanks, Mom. I really appreciate the tips.
I mean, do you think there's anything else that I should know?
I think that it's important that whenever it's mealtime that you make
sure that you get a good meal.
You eat all of your food so you have the energy to get through the day.
They're going to really put you through it rigorously.
Yeah. Be prepared for that.
Well, can you tell me a little bit more about the drills?
Sure, yeah. You'll be running a lot in your uniform and your clothes.
I think that trekking a five-mile distance in some boots can be pretty
difficult, but your strength will get up there.
You'll be able to handle it.
So what's the campus life like?
Oh, campus life.
Oh, it was so fun back in my day.
I'll tell you what.
I was with all the girls, of course. And there was guys, of course. But, you
know, I only bunked with the women.
And things were pretty fun. That's all I have to say about that.
So how was it like for you back in the day, Mom?
Back in military, you mean?
Mm-hmm.
You know, it could be pretty tough, but I have to say all in all I had a blast
doing it.
I would do anything to do it again.
I wouldn't change anything. I don't regret it at all.
I'm so excited for my boy to join now.
I just know that you're going to do wonderful.
And all the benefits?
Perfect.
You're not sad about me leaving for that long? Of course I'll miss you, dear.
I'll miss you a lot. I'll see you. I just know that you're getting a good
start at life and...
It'll benefit you in the long run. That's all I want for you, honey.
I really appreciate that.
Was there any more pointers or tips you could give me that were in that video?
Yeah, of course. You should watch again.
Yeah.
Nice stretches. I mean, all I can say is the importance of stretching and maybe
getting your heart rate. Throw in some jumping jacks and some squats and just
get that heart rate up.
Do some more stretching. That's all I can really say.
Okay. Well, thank you. I really appreciate that.
How are you feeling?
I mean, I'm honestly a little nervous about going, but I don't think it'll be
too bad.
Yeah. How are you feeling this morning? Are you tired?
Yeah, of course I'm tired. I was up late playing video games last night.
And, well...
I wasn't really trying to get up and out of bed, but here I am.
Oh, well, before your video came to the military, you can just say adios to
that. Yeah, I know.
There's a lot of things I gotta remember that I can't do anymore.
Yep. It's time to grow up, isn't it?
Well, I think I'm good now. Do you think I could come in your mouth real quick?
Of course.
Mmm.
It's good.
Well, did you want to finish your workout? And I guess I'll let you get
back to doing some more stretching.
All right, I'll see you later, honey. Okay, I'll see you later, Mom.
Can I have my phone back?
Oh, of course.
Thank you.
You bet.
Whoa, what the hell, Mom?
What's going on?
Happy Memorial Day, sweetie.
Can't I just sleep?
Don't talk to me disrespectfully, young man. Do you want to run laps? No.
Well, good.
Listen, I think that you need more training and a little bit more knowledge
before you head off to the military.
Why don't you come sit right here?
Fine.
That's right.
I wrote a couple of questions here.
I'm going to quiz you over.
Are you ready?
Uh, I mean, I'm still trying to wake up, but I guess I could try.
There's no time for sleep, like I said.
Alright, when you hear about face, what do you need to do?
Uh, make a 180 turn.
Very good. Good job. Alright, so far we're at 100%, aren't we?
Hmm.
What is the highest ranking in the army?
Highest ranking in the army.
Give me just a second to think about this.
The general of the army?
Very good.
That's the correct answer, son.
Awesome.
I probably could have written a couple more questions
down here. Let's see what we have.
What is the alternate name for the Indochina War?
What is the alternate name of the Indochina War?
That's a tough one. I'm going to have to really think about that one.
Give it some thought.
Let's see.
Oh, this has got me stumped.
Yeah, I think I'm drawing blanks. I don't know if I know the answer to this
one. Maybe give it a guess.
Just try it.
Is it the Vietnam War?
Very good. Bravo, son. Bravo.
That's exactly what it is.
Let's see.
Which branch of the military...
Has land, air, and sea missions.
Oh, that's an easy one.
Navy. Good job.
Very good.
You know, I thought a lot of these questions would be harder.
You thought so?
Yeah, I think I've got them down for the most part.
I'm determined to stump you on one.
What does ROTC stand for?
What does ROT stand for?
ROTC. Oh, TC.
Okay.
Any idea what ROTC stands for?
Honestly,
I'm really drawing blanks on this one.
How about we come back to that one? Yeah, that sounds good. I'll ask the
next question and then we'll revert back to that one in just a second.
Okay? Okay.
Let's see.
Maybe you just need a little bit more time to think about that one.
What hand is used to render the hand salute?
Which hand is used to render the hand salute?
Is it the left hand?
Try again.
Well, there's only one other hand, Mom.
So it's got to be the right hand.
Correct. I just wanted to hear you say it accurately.
Hmm.
What is the difference between quick time...
And double time.
Quick time and double time difference.
Let me think about that for a second.
I hope this quiz isn't timed because I don't know if I can be fast with it.
Let's see. Quick time is 120 steps per minute.
And then double time is 180
steps per minute. I think that's the right one. That's correct. Good job.
Listen, you've been studying, haven't you?
Well, I mean, I have to. I have to pass, you know. All right. Well, we still have
that one question.
What does R-O-T-C stand for?
That one, I think, is reserve officer's training corpse.
Good job. You got them all. Listen to you. Thanks, Mom.
I really appreciate all the help you've been giving me. Yeah, you're just the
smartest, aren't you?
So could you tell me a little bit more about our family history?
Um, maybe who else had served in the military?
Well, every single person in our family has served. You know this.
Oh, really? I didn't know Grandpa did, too.
Of course Grandpa did, too.
And that's why I served, because my father did.
So, are you nervous?
Um, yeah, I'm definitely nervous. I don't know anyone else that's going. All
my friends, they just didn't want to do it.
Yeah?
You're going to miss all your friends here, huh?
Yeah, I think so. But, I mean...
This is what I wanted to do with my life, you know? I wanted to follow in
the footsteps of my mom and the rest of my family.
There you go.
What a good boy you are.
You'll make new friends.
Friendships that will last a lifetime, you know?
Yeah. I mean, how long did you end up serving, Mom?
Four years.
Wow.
That's pretty amazing.
Yeah. What about Dad?
He served probably eight.
Oh wow.
You're going to come back so disciplined.
Well, I feel like I'm already pretty disciplined, but I mean, I do talk back
every now and then, but that's just because I'm tired.
And you're always coming in this room blowing that whistle.
Just trying to prepare you for what's to come.
I mean, I definitely appreciate it.
I'm definitely not looking forward to waking up super early all those days
once I'm there.
You'll just have to go to bed early.
If they'll let us, I'm sure they're going to have us up late at night trying
to get us all nice and tired.
And exhausted really push us through our paces.
They have to prepare you for the unexpected.
Was there anything that you struggled with when you were going to school?
I think the most was lack of sleep, for sure.
How was the food there?
It's terrible.
Especially when you're out on missions.
You're eating from packets.
I mean, I eat the same thing pretty much every day already. I don't think I'm
going to struggle too much with it.
I think you eat anything, so yeah, I doubt that you'll struggle with it
either.
Are
you
still close with any of the people that you met at school?
Of course, I've maintained lots of friendships over the years.
Well, that's good.
My best friend Sally.
Her and I were in the same platoon.
Do you think I could come in your mouth again?
Of course.
Oh, thanks, Mom. I really appreciate you doing that.
Mm-hmm.
All right.
Enough of this sappy shit.
Go run 10 laps around the house.
What? Are you serious? I thought you were... You promised.
Oh, there are no promises in the military. Get to it.
Wow, Mom, all this food looks so amazing.
Oh, thank you, honey.
Yeah, of course. And your dress looks phenomenal.
Do you like this?
I do. You're so patriotic.
I'm ready for tonight's party, you know it? Mm-hmm.
I'm really going to miss you.
Aw, you're so sweet, Mom.
I sure am going to miss all the fun times that we've had, you know? I can't
believe that you're growing up the way that you are.
Going to miss movie night with you.
Board games.
You know, all the fun things that we do as a family.
Aw, Mom.
Yeah, I think movie night's definitely going to be missed for sure.
Yeah.
Well, we definitely had some fun vacations as well.
I don't know. I don't know how I'm going to handle you being gone for a year. I
thought I was going to be able to handle this, but now it's one day before and
I'm getting a little bit, I don't know, I guess nostalgic.
Aw, going to miss me? That's cute.
You think so? I'm only going to be gone for a little while.
For a whole year.
That's a long time.
It'll go by pretty fast.
I'm sure it will.
I know that you'll grow a lot during that time.
Oh, of course. I know my instructors are going to run me through the paces.
Yeah? Are you going to come back with, like, huge muscles and stuff?
Probably.
I'm sure it'll all pay off.
It's nice that we get to have, like, I guess one more dinner before you head
off.
Yeah, I mean, you did a phenomenal job.
It looks like you made hot dogs, some potatoes.
Definitely perfect for Memorial Day. Well, I would have liked to have had
something a little more fancy for your goodbye, but, you know, the occasion is
Memorial Day, so this is what we're getting.
Oh, it's perfect.
I can't believe you did all that grilling yourself.
Yep, I did it all by myself.
And I know how much you love hot dogs.
It's always been your favorite ever since you were tiny.
Yeah, they're always my go-to, especially on a hot summer day.
Yeah.
So what board game are you going to miss the most playing with me? I always like
playing, I don't know, the one with like...
You know, all the money and you had to take over all the places.
Oh, yeah. I know which one you're talking about. Yeah, I like that one.
That is a pretty fun one. There's another one where you have to guess the
person. That one's fun, too.
Mm-hmm.
Well, honestly, with school, I'm kind of nervous.
I'm just not sure I'm going to be able to make friends all that easy.
Oh, no.
I'm sure you'll do just fine. You've always been able to make friends. A
social butterfly is how I describe you.
Uh-huh.
Thanks, Mom.
But I am moving to an entirely different state.
Yeah. You know what, though? You have to remember that everybody else is just as
nervous as you are.
Yeah, I guess you're right.
Yeah, so everybody's going to want friends. Everybody feels the same way.
There's no need to be nervous and anxious. Just go with the flow.
Well, I hope my teachers are nice.
Yeah, we'll see about that.
I can't promise you that one.
They want to toughen you up.
Yeah, you're probably right about that.
Yeah.
You getting hungry?
I am getting hungry.
Yeah? I think we should probably eat soon.
Yeah? Do you want me to make you a plate?
Um, maybe in a second.
Yeah?
A little occupied, are you?
Unfortunately,
I don't think I thought ahead. I didn't make dessert.
Ugh.
That's okay. I don't need dessert.
Okay.
Doesn't give you all that sugar before you head out anyway.
But you do know I like pie.
Yes, you do like pie.
And ice cream probably would have been really good. Like some popsicles.
Hmm. Maybe we can go out for ice cream later.
Oh, that would be great.
Yeah? Mm-hmm.
Well, I guess you could start making that plate now if you want. Oh yeah?
Mm-hmm. You're getting hungry, huh? I am.
Okay.
Let's see here.
This is kind of in my way.
Are you wanting any condiments?
Definitely some ketchup and mustard.
I think that would go great.
Well, thanks, Mom.
Oh, you're welcome, honey.
It smells really good.
Are you going to make yourself a plate? I'm trying to decide what I'm wanting
here.
I guess I'll have some watermelon.
Yeah, watermelon's always good.
I'm thinking I'll skip the bread this time.
But I'll spoil myself with a few chips.
Just don't tell anybody.
I won't.
I guess our other guests will be here shortly.
Oh yeah, who's all coming?
Well, the whole family's coming, of course.
Some of your friends I invited and maybe a few other surprise guests.
So has there been any drama at work on your end? Oh, drama at work? Oh my
goodness, yes. We have Kelly from the mailing department who's all in a raised
business and she's kind of starting quite a, I don't know, an inter-work
war, so to speak.
Turning people against each other.
And it can be kind of crazy at my job.
Yeah. Do you like your boss at least?
I mean, I guess he's okay.
He's always keeping me late and bossing me around.
But I deal with it.
I heard he'll be replaced soon anyway.
Oh, that's good. Maybe you'll get the promotion.
Maybe. Maybe I could apply for that promotion once I find out it's
available.
That'd be nice.
Yeah, so my friends definitely threw a going away party for me recently. It was
so much fun.
Oh, tell me about it. Tell me about it.
Well, they surprised me and picked me up.
And next thing I know, we were driving out of town. And before I knew it, I
kept seeing all these signs. And they were taking me to see my favorite
baseball team.
Oh, my goodness.
Did you kind of have an idea of what they were doing?
Honestly, I had no idea.
They started off saying one thing, and I think it was just to distract me from
the real thing.
Oh.
That must have been nerve-wracking a little, not knowing where you're going.
Yeah, but I just, I trust them, so I wasn't too worried.
Oh, good, good.
Yeah, you hang out with a nice crowd.
Yeah, usually.
The guys are always great.
Yeah, I'm always so proud of you.
Taking all the right people to be around.
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
There is some drama though before between one of my friends and his
girlfriend I guess like they're always arguing and fighting and I don't know
how he does it You know that kind of relationship never lasts.
Oh, I know you got to be happy and work through things Right. And I just feel
like they're just always bickering about the small things. And, yep, I think
you're right, Mom. They'll never be happy that way. No, you have to be
grateful for what you have, not sit there and pick little unnecessary fights
with each other.
Mm-hmm.
You know, I noticed you're not eating your hot dog.
Oh, no, not yet. You have this over here.
Yeah, that'd be great. Thank you.
Mm-hmm.
I still need to set out some drinks. I can't forget that.
Oh, yeah, that's right. I forgot to grab any of the beverages. I think we have
some in the refrigerator.
I'll remember to grab those later.
I like to keep them cold before everybody gets there.
I really like your earrings.
They match your dress.
Yes, they do.
Perfect for the occasion, huh?
Yeah, did you get those online?
Oh, I can't tell you where I got them. They're so cheap, I'm embarrassed about
it. Well,
they look great.
Yeah, I just thought it was something fun.
A little costume new for the occasion.
Well,
come on over this way.
You know, honey, while I'm thinking about it, I actually have a gift for
you. Oh, you do?
Yes.
I know how annoyed you are with me coming into your room and blowing the
whistle.
Every single day, waking you up early.
Yeah, I mean, it is really annoying.
I know.
I've been asking you to stop forever.
Well, it's coming to an end tomorrow.
So what I wanted to do was... I wanted to give you my whistle.
Oh, wow.
Thanks, Mom.
I'm not really sure I'm going to need it while I'm there, but... Oh, well, listen
here, though.
That whistle holds quite a bit of significance for me.
You see, back whenever I was in the military, my friend Sally and I, the
more we got promoted, that was a whistle that she gifted to me.
And so I had it through all the years.
It's the only whistle I ever used. I never had to replace it.
It's the one and only one that I have.
Oh, wow.
So I want you to have it.
Thanks, Mom. You don't have to use it. You can just keep it. You can use it if
you want.
Maybe one day whenever you become general of the army.
I'll just remember that.
You know, your mom.
Yeah, I'll definitely look at it and remember you for sure while I'm there.
Yeah. I really appreciate that.
I know I'm going to miss you a ton while I'm there.
Oh, you're going to miss me?
That's so sweet.
You know, anytime you miss me, you could just blow on your whistle.
You're funny.
Wow, you really have grown up, haven't you?
I mean, I have, but that's all thanks to you, Mom.
Oh, my heart. You're such a sweet thing.
So, what are your plans for the future?
You mean after school?
Maybe during school, after school. What are your plans?
Honestly, I haven't really thought about it too much.
My mind has been so focused on school lately that I haven't really thought
about...
The stuff that's after.
Really? Well, what are some goals that you have within the military?
Hmm.
Well... Hmm.
It would be really nice to move up, of course, over time.
I mean, isn't that everyone's goal once they get in? Yeah.
Are you going to use the program that gives you a scholarship for school?
Of course.
That's my smart boy.
I thought about maybe...
Getting into, I don't know, something like marketing or business.
That way when I get out, I can maybe help you a little bit more run your
business. Oh, what a sweetheart. I know that you'll be good at anything you do.
If that's the path you choose, you know you have a job with me.
Thank you, Everett.
I look forward to working side by side with you one day.
Of course.
I can help you in many ways, too. Like a team, partnership.
That's it.
I like you to be well relaxed.
Especially considering you're gonna have a hard day tomorrow.
Lots of traveling.
Probably some people yelling in your face.
You'll call me every week.
Yeah, I'll definitely call you every week. Every day?
Um, if I can, I don't know if they'll let me use the phone every day just to
call my mom.
Oh, I'm sure it'll make an exception if you tell them who I am.
Maybe I'll write them a letter.
Is that too crazy?
I don't think it's too crazy, especially if they remember you.
I need you to pay attention in your classes whenever you get there, though.
They quiz you over everything.
I'll try my best. I mean, as long as...
You can always call me to help you study.
You'd do that? You'd help me with my homework? Oh, you know that I want
anything to help you excel in this world.
You're the best mom ever.
I think I'm going to shift here and get a little more comfortable.
You know, all this talk about the military is bringing back some fond
memories that I have.
Yeah, like what?
Well, for example, some of the pranks that I've been a part of and thinking
about the times that we pranked the drill sergeants and never got caught.
In fact, I think somebody else got blamed for it, but, you know, whatever.
Every man for himself at this point.
I remember a time when Sally and I, we snuck into a different barrack section.
We tied up the room and put shaving cream on the doorknobs and everything.
So when somebody woke up in the middle of the night, all those bells went off
and people were falling and tripping over each other. They didn't know what
happened.
And you didn't get caught?
We didn't get caught.
No, you had to be stealthy.
Sneaky. Wow, I'm impressed, Mom.
Yeah. Well, then another, I think that they got us back.
Not knowing that it was us. They just assumed, I guess so.
And egged in our building, which ruined the paint. So, of course, we had to go
out and repaint it all.
Even though we weren't the ones who did it. But I guess they couldn't find who
did it. So we were allowed to clean up the mess.
Don't egg anybody.
Don't egg their buildings.
I wasn't even thinking about pranking anybody, but it does sound like a lot of
fun, especially if I'm getting bored there.
Yeah, well, you have to pass the time somehow.
And you make friendships and connections.
You know, we actually had a lot of fun in the military.
Yes, it definitely has its hardships. It can be, you know, physically tough on
your body and mentally tough, but the fun things stick around, too.
You know, we get to travel often.
We travel all the time.
I've been to Japan, and I've been to Russia, and I've been down south. I've
been all over the place.
I don't think I have a favorite place that I visited.
Tokyo was pretty cool, I suppose.
You've been to Tokyo?
I didn't know that. You didn't know that?
Of course I've been to Tokyo. It was a very short-lived thing, but it was a lot
of fun.
Gorgeous scenery.
Buildings are really neat.
I just thought it was kind of fun.
Different.
I didn't speak the language, so there was definitely a learning curve there.
I'm just thankful I didn't have to go to 29 Palms.
Oh, is that one pretty bad?
I mean, I've been there for like a week or so, but I wasn't stationed there.
Going to 29 Palms, California?
It's like living in the middle of the desert.
It's awful.
Just for a short little week that I was there, there was sand tornadoes,
and I needed to drive five miles outside of base just to get anywhere.
The cool thing is it was an hour and a half from Las Vegas.
So I had to sneak out there on the weekends and party and have some fun
with the friends.
Yeah, that does sound pretty fun.
Me and my guy friends were thinking about going to Vegas right before I
left, but we just didn't have time to go there.
Oh no, you'll have to plan a trip later.
Maybe after you guys get through basic, huh?
So were there any other fond memories that you had or hardships that maybe you
had to deal with while traveling around and being stationed at different
countries?
You know, I'll say the hardships were a number of times.
I like to keep things lighthearted and fun.
You know, I always like catching up on my sleep on the planes, traveling
places.
I don't know.
What kind of things are you looking forward to? Any places you're hoping to
get to go to?
I mean, Hawaii would be pretty sweet. I've never been anywhere tropical that
has a nice beach.
Oh, Hawaii's one of the best ones.
You'll love that.
Their oceans are...
So comfortable one time I was in the ocean in Hawaii and I forgot I was even
in the water because the water was so comfortable I
think
you're ready.
I think you're gonna do terrific and basic and get through basic
You'll be the best one.
I just know it.
Do you feel like you're ready?
Yeah, I think I'm pretty ready.
Good.
I'm just not looking forward to getting up super early in the morning and
leaving you all alone.
Oh, honey.
Like I said, you're just going to have to go to bed early.
Get lots of sleep.
I know you must be stressed.
You'll relax once you get there though.
Oh!
Mm-hmm.
Let's put this all over me.
Because it's the last time we're going to have fun together for quite a while.
A little bit all over my body.
Listen, you have a really early flight tomorrow, don't you?
Yeah, I think it's at four in the morning.
That's so early.
And I know that you still have lots to do.
Yeah, I mean, I definitely have quite a bit of packing to do. Do you think you
could maybe help me with that? Of course, I'd love to help you with
packing.
Alright, thanks mom.
I'm going to go get cleaned up. I'll see you upstairs?
Of course. See you. I'll be there in a minute. All right.
