Police!
PDI!
More than 36 raids were carried out on different properties
belonging to those implicated in the watch scandal.
A case opened in 2017,
when a suitcase of jewelry and luxury watches
caught the attention of the police at Santiago International Airport.
Items that had been subsequently smuggled into Chile.
Estrella Dinamarca was arrested.
A well-known jeweler who claimed to have connections to celebrities.
Among the people involved,
the highest-paid TV host and model in Chilean television at the time,
Tonka Tomicic Petric, and Marco Antonio López Spagui.
Who is known as Parived.
Tonka Tomicic's husband denied any involvement
in the illegal purchase of high-end watches and jewelry.
HIGH END
We're joined once again live by journalist Laura Landaeta,
who of course has more details on the matter.
This is jewelry that was stolen abroad,
which means that if worn out in public, no one would notice.
So in this particular case…
My name is Laura Landaeta. I'm a journalist and author.
I've published six books.
The second most recent is about the watch scandal.
I worked for many years at a newspaper in Chile
that focused heavily on pop culture.
So I learned to write in simple language,
even though it often leads people to trivialize my work.
I think my greatest strength is precisely incorporating pop culture
into a body of knowledge that aims to uncover deeper results.
But I'm also someone who has a lot of detractors.
What makes the watch scandal unique is that it involves two figures
who are iconic in Chilean pop culture.
On one side, the aspirational shaman of the upper class,
married to a beautiful woman who's highly successful model and TV host.
And at the same time, it reached the most marginalized corners of the underworld,
which could be represented by Estrella Dinamarca.
I first learned about the case
when the PDI had just begun its investigation.
My name is Rosario Muñoz.
I'm a superintendent with the Chilean Investigative Police.
At the time, back in 2017,
I was working with an international task force called BRICO.
And a pickpocket was caught in the act.
This thief specialized in robberies abroad.
INTERNATIONAL THIEF
The word lanza is a really nice Chilean colloquialism
for a delinquent who robs quickly and runs.
And they don't physically harm you or endanger your safety,
but they're able to to make a profit quickly and effectively.
"Basically, the way I and the others who do this operate
is to travel abroad, rob houses, and then bring the jewelry back to Chile,
where it's sold to different people."
"As for me and pretty much everyone who goes abroad to steal,
Estrella Dinamarca buys directly from us."
"I've sold Estrella everything,
jewelry, watches, rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, etc."
GOLD ROLEX
So that statement is what launched our investigation.
To understand the watch scandal, you had to start with Estrella Dinamarca.
Why? Because everyone else led back to her.
So she kept this machine running.
THE STAR
THIS IS THE FIRST INTERVIEW WITH ESTRELLA DINAMARCA
SINCE BEING CHARGED IN THE WATCH SCANDAL.
Estrella scene, shot one, take one. Roll camera.
Just a minute.
- Estrella, can you hear me? - Yes.
Okay, great.
Let's start with your childhood.
Could you tell us a little about how your childhood was?
No…
I remember having a happy childhood when I was little.
Back then, I lived in Malloa.
My mom was an Evangelical.
She was one of those women who'd preach on the street.
My dad was from another world.
He was Roma.
I remember being a little girl, and he used to make cards float.
Fortune-telling cards and that stuff.
Obviously, there's some trick, but I saw them do it.
ESTRELLA DINAMARCA'S DAUGHTER
I've seen it.
For example, he'd say, "Look. Come here. I'm gonna…"
"Bring me a glass, and I'm gonna get wine from this tree."
And there were always people watching, and no one could explain it.
So we had a happy childhood.
But that only lasted until…
well, my grandfather went down the wrong path.
He got involved with other women, and that's when everything turned sad.
When he left her, my mother had nothing to fall back on.
She had nothing.
And neither did we.
So I made a promise to myself.
I told myself, "That will never happen to me. I'll never depend on a man."
I moved to Santiago to try to get ahead in life,
but… it was still hard.
So I had to build a life for me and Carla, who was still just a little girl.
She was always there with me, always by my side.
And finally, how did your mom get into jewelry?
Because of my school.
One day, they were putting together the end-of-year gifts.
My mom, who was resourceful, said,
"Why don't you give them a necklace with a nameplate?"
"I don't know… something."
And the other women were like, "Yeah, good idea."
From there, another class picked up the idea.
Each class had about 38 to 40 students.
Then another class joined in, and there were 80.
Then the school nearby.
That's when she started to become well-known.
That's how it started, little by little.
That's when she set up shop in Galerías de Santo Domingo.
Over the 25 years I've been there, it's filled up with shops.
I started out buying and selling.
How, when, and why did these thieves start coming into your jewelry store?
I think word got around that I knew a lot about jewelry
and that I offered fair prices for what people brought in.
And that's when people started coming in.
The truth is, we all started out the same back then.
There were a lot of pickpockets.
Back then, there were these chain snatchers.
As soon as they snatched the chains, they'd hide them in their mouths.
They'd come to the store with the chain in their mouth.
Then they'd just spit it out, saliva and all.
So I started making a name for myself in that world too.
All, or most, of the pickpockets we investigated ended up going to her
because she always kept her word.
I think, in her line of work, she was a woman of her word.
Then people from outside started coming in with their stuff.
I don't know if I was too trusting or stupid.
Well, if that's my sin, my mistake, my crime, then so be it.
But I couldn't ask them,
"Where did you get this? Who did you steal it from?"
RANCAGUA PRISON
I was in prison at Rancagua.
So I spent about a year there.
ESTRELLA ARSENIA DINAMARCA SÁNCHEZ SEPTEMBER 25, 1958 (63 YEARS OLD)
Estrella Dinamarca was incarcerated for the offenses she had on her record,
robbery via intimidation and receiving stolen property.
She served her sentence.
You meet people. That's how it always is.
That's how I got started.
I got in touch with people who traveled to France and Switzerland.
Or through their husbands who traveled.
They were pickpockets. Typical thieves, but international.
Then I'd go and appraise it, and that's how I started traveling.
I think I've seen the finest jewels in the world in my hands.
I thought, "What'll I do with these?" So I had to start moving around.
That's when customers started coming in
because high-end jewelry needs high-end clients.
Life just unfolded for us. One thing led to another.
Look, I'm going to show it to… I'll tell you who.
That guy from TV… I mean, Parived.
CIVIL REGISTRY AND IDENTIFICATION SERVICE
Parived became part of the investigation as a buyer of illicit goods.
Yes, at first, they referred to him as Marco or Antonio.
Later, we identified him via wiretaps.
THE PHONE CONVERSATIONS USED IN THIS DOCUMENTARY
ARE PART OF THE WATCH SCANDAL INVESTIGATION.
Hello?
- Estrellita. - Hi, Antonio. Sorry.
All right. Listen, Estrellita, I didn't quite understand what you meant.
But I'll see what I can do.
- If I can come up with the cash or not… - Okay.
Tell me what times work for the other thing so I can plan.
Well, no, I'd say around 5:30.
Just confirm with me beforehand so we can get everything set.
Okay.
- Did you talk to the lady or not? - Yeah, I did.
I'm waiting for her to bring me other things she said she wanted to sell,
so we'll see. Okay?
Done.
- Okay, Antonio. Bye. - All right. Take care.
THE MAGICIAN
MARCO ANTONIO LÓPEZ - PARIVED -
DID NOT WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS DOCUMENTARY.
HE'S ONLY GIVEN ONE INTERVIEW ON THE WATCH SCANDAL.
- Maybe in the hallway, too, huh? - Yes.
There's more light.
Marco Antonio, after everything that happened,
you say you have your truth.
But do you think your silence ultimately contributed to that situation as well?
The public scorn, what was that like?
And how did it begin to shape your life from then on?
Let's put it this way. Like I said, I've become a sort of fetish
and, in a way, a caricature.
Parived became a caricature.
People thought I was always walking around in a robe,
that I had a cult.
So many things
that, whenever I've had the chance to see what's being said and what's being shown,
I feel like they're talking about someone I don't know.
I don't know who that is.
He's kind of taken on a life of his own because, yes, he's a creation.
Estrella's and Parived's life stories aren't all that different.
One comes from the north, the other from the south.
Estrella comes from a Romani family.
And Parived is the son of a woman
who also did tarot reading and fortune-telling.
Eventually, they arrive in Santiago,
and they each build a life from where they find themselves.
And I think Parived was far more successful than Estrella…
because Parived is the kind of person who charms you, who draws you in.
Parived has a gift
that enchants, converts, and interests you.
He creates an atmosphere
where you feel like someone else,
like you're special.
INESSA SOROKINA MODEL AND PARIVED'S EX-GIRLFRIEND
One day, we went to a restaurant
to celebrate five years together.
We sat down. I was with Parived.
And all of a sudden, a young man started talking, and immediately…
"The man next to us is so ugly."
And he started making inappropriate comments.
It bothered me so much, I turned to Parived and said, "You know what?"
"I once told you I'd never ask you for anything again,
but now I'm asking you to answer him and tell him
something he couldn't even begin to imagine."
And he said,
"When you were 14, your sister died,
who you loved like a mother."
"It's been 16 years, and you still can't accept it."
"You still can't accept that she's dead. You still can't believe it."
It was the first time he'd ever seen that man.
How do you explain that?
I think it's less about spirituality and more about persuasion,
connecting with people, and earning their trust.
I think he's more of a charlatan
than a genuine guru or shaman.
CECILIA GUTIÉRREZ ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALIST
He saw himself as Rasputin.
He used to say, "I am Rasputin."
When Rasputin healed the Tsar's son,
he did so from a distance.
He stopped his blood disorder from afar.
Mentally.
In the early '80s, I met him at the Meditation Institute,
where we practiced technique together.
PLAINTIFF AGAINST PARIVED
And we talked for several months,
until he asked me for a $20,000 contribution.
He said it was for some kind of gemstone business in Brazil.
Since it was only supposed to be for a few months,
I thought, "Well, we'll help this person out a little."
Then he disappeared.
Years later, he sent me a letter.
"I believe that sometimes the law of nature
sets us on rather unusual paths
in order to teach us something."
"This whole karmic, cosmic situation was created."
"I repeat and assure you all that money be back in your hands."
"Not in a hundred years,
but in the near future,
and perhaps when you least expect it."
"At least that's what I hope."
"Finally, I want to wish you all the best in this world
and all the best in the heavenly realm that we will soon enter."
"We will soon enter."
We have to tell him he's not getting in.
"Big hugs, Marco Antonio López Spagui."
Aka as of now, Parived.
"Aka," that's very important. Aka Parived.
Osho gave him the spiritual name "Parived," which means
"a sound from beyond."
"A sound from beyond."
In all his fantasies, Parived is always the main character.
Parived doesn't just know a philosophy from a book.
Parived knew the person who wrote it.
Or at least he makes people believe he knew Osho
and that Osho died in his arms,
gave him his final blessing,
and took his last breath of light while looking into Parived's eyes.
With Parived, everything was grand. Always grand.
And that's how he built this persona, this shaman, this guru,
this antiques dealer who, from an early age,
was determined at all costs, to become
part of the world of celebrities, the jet set, and show business.
Tonka and Parived's relationship became like a myth on TV.
I know we're not supposed to comment on people's bodies,
but it was weird to see someone like Tonka, a model,
with this older man, who some might not have considered very attractive.
Right from the start, they just didn't seem like a good match.
It seemed weird.
You'd wonder,
"Why is this beautiful girl who could be with anyone with this man?"
Then you immediately think, "He must have something." Right?
What is it about Parived that won Tonka over?
What is it about Parived that won her over?
WHAT IS IT ABOUT PARIVED THAT WON TONKA OVER?
The story…
When I started working on the morning show Bienvenidos,
Tonka was, without a doubt, the biggest star on Chilean television.
Tonka was practically royalty.
She was one of those stars who made you go, "Wow."
Let's say Tonka's brilliance
sparked, of course, all the obvious questions.
Who is she with? Who is he? What does he do? How does he live?
Simply because I remained silent for so long
and never revealed what I did or who I was,
by personal choice,
it fuels speculation.
As I said at the beginning, silence gives rise to many things.
Then you can paint the blank wall any color.
I don't think he disliked being in the public eye
because he was always by Tonka's side,
and he knew he was in the spotlight, didn't he?
Tonka introduced me to him, and that's how I met Parived.
Parived was kind of weird.
There's no comfortable way to explain this.
He told me to be very careful about…
who I had sex with, basically, because a man's semen
has an energy that lingers for I don't know how long, and I…
Okay.
I think he developed the kind of class
that comes from rubbing shoulders with so many worldly people.
I think he embraced it so completely that it became part of who he was.
PARIVED & TONKA'S RESIDENCE BARRIO ALTO, SANTIAGO
I always tell people, "You can fake being wealthy or pretend you belong,
but there's always something that gives you away."
"There's always something that will reveal you're not from there."
Hello?
Hello, how are you, Mrs. Estrella?
Who is this?
Jeez, you don't even have my number saved, Ms. Estrella? What?
What's up?
All right, listen. You know what I've got? I've got some watches to sell.
I've got one, two, three, four, five watches.
And out of those five watches,
three are Tag Heuers, and one is a Breitling.
- Are you interested? - But how much are you asking?
You know those brands aren't exactly in high demand here.
Yes, but…
You know the Pateks and all those…
You sell the Pateks and the Rolexes to important people.
But… there must be some trafficker out there.
One or two people are into these kinds of things. You know?
Send me the photos just in case. I'll let you know how much they offer.
FAMILY CLAN
Estrella Dinamarca, in this investigation,
was identified as the leader of this criminal network.
Why? Because she was the one who had the connections
to the people who did the dirty work,
the ones who committed the robberies abroad.
They burglarized luxury homes in Oklahoma City.
Police suspect they're part of a criminal gang
linked to luxury home burglaries in different states.
Jewelry, watches, and other luxury goods are smuggled into Chile
or sent directly to someone to pick them up.
So, Juan, we'd like you to introduce yourself,
to the extent you are able.
Hi, I'm Juan,
and all I know how to do is steal.
The affluent neighborhoods are really in California.
That's where the rich are.
So yeah, those neighborhoods were the best…
made for the best hauls, so to speak.
We lived too much by
"What the hurricane didn't take, we did."
Whether it was wildfires or tornadoes.
That's when you really take advantage of the situation, the panic.
Like they say, "Opportunity makes a thief."
JONATHAN YOUSSEF JEWELLER
SIMI VALLEY CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES
MARTÍN ESTRADA FORMER FEDERAL PROSECUTOR, CALIFORNIA
So nobody can say we didn't film ourselves, motherfuckers.
We're crazy, wrecked.
Fucking idiots.
What can I tell you about these watches? We were eyeing these watches, but…
They couldn't really be sold over there because they wouldn't pay the price.
That's why they were exported to Chile.
You could get more for them here.
Juan, do you know anything about Estrella Dinamarca?
No, man.
I do, but I don't.
That's what I can tell you.
THE WORLD
We've always traveled together as a family with my mom.
Since we were kids.
But honestly, I couldn't tell you when she started traveling for business
or when we were traveling just for pleasure.
Of course, it seemed weird she'd suddenly disappear
for the whole day.
And… sometimes she'd be gone traveling for two or three days.
But our trips were always family trips.
Look, when I was 23,
I met a girl who I got involved with romantically.
FORMER MEMBER OF THE DINAMARCA CLAN
And through her, I happened to meet Estrella.
MADRID METRO
They were family trips
because when you travel as a family, it draws less suspicion.
The idea was to take advantage of those trips
so they'd see those places because otherwise it would've been hard
to afford all of that or to be able to do it.
Hello?
Look, here's the thing. I need to travel to the United States.
- Okay. - Los Angeles, California.
Los Angeles. Okay. And when? Approximately.
Look, we saw one for tomorrow, Wednesday night.
We checked what's available.
Tomorrow…
There's a flight at midnight.
And which flight leaves at midnight?
In February 2019, via wiretap,
we obtained information indicating that Estrella Dinamarca and her family
were planning to travel abroad, specifically to Los Angeles, California
to negotiate the sale of and to transport stolen property.
What time are you leaving?
I have to be at the airport at 9:00.
- 9:00 at night? - Yes.
But you also have to see whether it's worth it or not--
Of course, that's why I'm going.
I'm gonna see if it's worth it or not.
It has to be profitable, otherwise what's the point?
Besides, they have to let me be.
And look, now that I've landed, what's the situation?
So this time, she decided to travel with her family
because she also needed to see the merchandise.
In this case, she maybe couldn't take the risk
because there were large amounts, and she'd have to pay millions of pesos.
FEBRUARY 19, 2019 THE DINAMARCA CLAN TRAVELS TO LOS ANGELES
The trips looked like vacations.
There were always a couple of days to sightsee, to go somewhere.
But it was strictly business.
She traveled to appraise the jewelry there and buy it…
and bring it back to Chile.
We'd always go, and sometimes we'd spend three days looking at jewelry,
appraising it, counting diamonds, and examining gemstones.
There were many things, a lot of types of things.
There was always some back-and-forth over the prices.
It's not easy to negotiate with them because they always know it all.
They take their sweet time,
so you need a strong personality
to deal with them and stay in control of the situation.
But there's something about her
that lets her close deals quickly and easily.
The truth is, my mom's personality was such that
she wasn't pretending not to be afraid of them.
She really wasn't afraid of them.
Estrella packed the items in suitcases.
Since she was traveling with her family, she put some in everyone's suitcases.
A bunch here, a bunch there. Dividing them up evenly among everyone.
That way, if they caught one suitcase, they wouldn't catch them all.
You don't put all your eggs in one basket.
That's why they traveled as a family
because they wore the watches and jewelry.
And it's not like transporting drugs
because transporting drugs is already a crime.
Wearing a watch isn't a crime,
unless it's established that the watch was stolen
and who the victim is.
So you don't run much risk.
It's easy to transport, and you can make a lot of money.
And no one's going to ask any questions,
unless someone's conducting an investigation.
FEBRUARY 21, 2019
THE DINAMARCA CLAN RETURNS FROM LOS ANGELES
Estrella Dinamarca entered Chile
with, I don't know, five or six suitcases.
I don't remember exactly how many, but it was a lot.
CUSTOMS
They asked all the passengers for their passport.
That's when I knew something was wrong because that never happens.
They searched her suitcases and found watches, necklaces, and a bunch of stuff.
I mean, it was crazy.
Her family also had three or four watches on their wrists.
They searched my bag and asked why I had so much jewelry.
I told them they weren't mine. They belonged to Estrella.
This had never happened on any of my trips.
They searched everything.
They went through my suitcases and my bags.
They took pictures of the things.
They kept asking, "Where did you get this jewelry? Where's this from?"
And I told them, "It's mine."
Up until that point, we had no idea the jewelry was stolen
or that the story she had told customs wasn't true.
So in that context and with no prior information,
Mrs. Dinamarca was released.
They let her in and gave the jewelry back.
Why didn't they seize it or confiscate it?
Because they couldn't prove the jewelry was stolen.
Once we got out of that, it was such a relief.
That's when I realized I had to get out of there.
After that, I never traveled with Estrella again.
Never again.
Hello?
Hello? Hi, how are you?
No joke, they were waiting for me on the jetway.
But the thing is, well, they took me to the police.
They searched all my bags, and they found everything I was carrying.
But since I'm a jeweler, I got away with it, you know?
I mean, you know how to handle those situations.
I told them, "No, I'm a jeweler, and these things are mine."
Even so, getting out of there was ugly, you know?
This had never happened to me…
It was a little frustrating,
but you always have to look on the bright side too.
And the fact that she spoke
and had the peace of mind to keep doing business
also allowed us to continue the investigation.
How much are you offering?
Fuck, I don't know, just pay me like 27.
If you know you'll get a good price, Mrs. Estrella.
You know we've done business, and we'll keep doing business.
I have to go the US now,
and you know I always come back with good stuff.
You know how we are.
I mean, I can give you 25 for it.
Let's make it 26, Mrs. Estrella. We've known each other for a while.
You know how it is.
We do know each other, so I'll tell you this. Nobody gets…
There were times we felt the investigation would never end
because she had connections to different crews
and thieves operating abroad,
different groups we were able to identify.
There were the Diamantinos, the Velásquezes…
So we put together a task force
within the National Robbery and Criminal Hotspots Division.
At our peak, I think there were six of us officials.
We had to do everything, but I think we had exactly the right officials,
and we were very dedicated.
But we did have to learn about the different brands,
and we also sought out expert advice.
As the investigation progressed,
I realized we could draw a parallel
that a watch could cost practically as much as a house.
We seized high-end watches worth approximately 600 million pesos.
The goal wasn't just to get to the fence and seize the stolen property,
but to dismantle the entire organization.
For it to be an organization, there had to be several components.
In this case, the ringleader, Estrella Dinamarca,
and she had operatives in the background,
whose job was essentially to find buyers.
Jaime Quiroz collected the money, sent the money, received the money,
and played a very active role within the organization.
DOWNTOWN SANTIAGO
How are you?
We're good. Did you see that shit?
Yeah, man. That works for me.
It's silver. So what did we settle on, roughly?
This shit's been burned. Burned, you know?
It got burned… in a fire, but it's all clean.
It's three and a half kilos. How much are you gonna charge per gram, roughly?
Fuck, 180 a gram, man.
He spent all day walking around downtown.
A lot of people knew him,
so they sold things to him and bought from him.
Hello?
Dude, how are you?
How are you, man?
Good. Dude, I've got an offer for you.
Let's hear it.
Silver at 550.
But you've gotta buy three and a half kilos.
Brand new.
Okay, what kind of silver is it?
Italian. The chains are really cool. Yeah, bro, it's beautiful. It's new.
Man, Jaime Quiroz was quite a character to me.
That's the truth. He was a colorful character.
We did a lot of business with Estrella.
We bought and sold jewelry and fine watches.
Let's put it this way, if she had a client for something,
I'd give her a piece I had.
JAIME QUIROZ'S LAWYERS
Or if I had a piece and she had the buyer, that's how we did business.
That's it.
That's why they lumped it all together, like it was all connected,
It was all dirty. It wasn't like that.
He was always impeccably dressed so he could win people over.
He was very smooth. He always knew exactly what to say.
- Thank you. - Thanks.
The watch doesn't weigh what I told you.
What? Is it my fault?
I sent you a photo showing how much it weighed, of the scale…
It's not gold. Don't you get it? It's not gold.
No, cut the shit.
Don't treat me like an idiot. I'm not.
I want to be crystal clear. You hear?
Clearly you're a crook. You're a scammer.
Tell me, where are you? Where? So you can say it to my face.
I'm in El Hoyo.
On my way, asshole. Who do you think you are?
- Come. - I'm not coming for nothing, man.
Who do you think you are?
Well, Galerías de Santo Domingo
was where our primary target, Estrella Dinamarca, was.
We determined that several places
were receiving these items,
goods stolen abroad.
I BUY GOLD
In other words, it's a place with a lot of jewelers
who aren't necessarily going to ask where an item came from.
We'd been working with them for a long time
to help them bring their businesses into compliance
because some make jewelry, others refine precious metals,
and others simply sell it.
WATCH-SCANDAL JEWELERS' ATTORNEY
That's also where people come who want to sell their jewelry or pawn it.
There's everything. It's a pretty busy shopping area.
Anything they couldn't sell,
they melted down and turned into new jewelry.
DOMINGO LUPALLANTE HAS SPENT 30 YEARS CREATING AND DESIGNING JEWELRY
Estrella Dinamarca was a hardworking person.
She's a real hard worker.
She's smart, has a real head for business.
She'd bring me pieces to repair, redesign, or melt down.
Metals she'd bought.
JEWELER
That's what I do. It's my job.
And that's how they'd make new jewelry from the pieces they'd melt down.
So there was a whole operation behind it to keep it all running.
From what I understand,
when it comes to these thieves and all that…
I still haven't seen anyone claim anything, a piece,
or anyone come in here and say,
"That's where they bought the goods stolen from me."
At least, I haven't heard that.
The international thieves know that if an item can't be traced,
no one's going to report it or come looking for it.
Because without a report, there's no crime.
And they know that.
So it's complicated.
Because you're always thinking about ending up in court.
So by the time you get there,
you need to give your attorney all the tools to present a strong case.
We had to conduct surveillance and tail them constantly
because it'd be one phone call and, "I'm on my way."
So we had to go there and see who showed up.
They'd see us as some kids on our phones,
never realizing we were actually recording them
or listening in on what they were saying.
And we'd leave someone listening in.
That person could spend an entire day or even a whole week
monitoring the conversations because they were our ears.
And the eyes had to be out on the street.
The highest step count my phone has ever recorded
was during this investigation because I was walking all day.
How did Estrella operate?
It was, "I'm almost there." "I'm on my way."
So we had to have that information
so we could be there, watching and getting better pictures
because wiretaps alone weren't enough.
No, you let me know when you've got everything.
- Okay. - And you move somewhere, at best…
It costs nothing to move further up.
I'll be at a meeting in VIVO.
We knew they were going to meet with an important client.
I think it was around noon when Estrella Dinamarca closed her shop
and walked out of the galleria.
She goes with Jaime Quiroz, her operations man, and hails a taxi.
We started tailing her.
She reached Santa María, took Oriente,
and because of traffic, we ended up a couple of traffic lights behind.
Based on the area and the direction they were heading,
there was a good chance they were going to the Sheraton.
And sure enough, they arrived there.
As we rounded the curve leading up to the Sheraton,
we noticed Tonka Tomicic's car parked in front of the hotel.
But Marco Antonio, Parived, was behind the wheel.
That's where the whole string of events began.
For Estrella, people like Parived gave this network a major boost.
Because Parived had the financial means to buy very expensive jewelry
that wasn't easy to resell in Chile.
Mr. López's involvement
illustrated just how far
this criminal network extended.
We're not just talking about thieves here.
We're talking about crime that crosses social class.
STRUCTURE OF THE CRIME ORGANIZATION
FAMILY CLAN - SELLERS SUPPLIERS
FINAL FENCES
You always have to remember that if there were no fences,
maybe none of this would exist
because someone has to buy these things.
If no one's interested, there's no business.
So it was expanding to include people with greater purchasing power,
from show business and television.
And you know that when you're dealing with wealthy people,
they'll also have more expensive lawyers
who will fight to get this person cleared of the charges.
So we had to come back with even more evidence.
Hello?
Hello.
Hi, Antonio. How are you?
Estrellita, all good here.
- Merry Christmas. - It's been a while.
Hey, Estrellita, what's new?
I showed you the stone. I'm not very good at taking pictures.
- If you're interested in seeing it… - I'd like you to bring it so I don't…
I'm leaving on a trip tomorrow night,
but if you get it to me, we can work something out.
I'm traveling. I can sell it. I can find a buyer.
I don't know, something.
I need a price and to see the quality.
Parived started out buying small quantities.
However, Parived's ambition reached a point
where Estrella started to become uncomfortable and a nuisance.
It was better to try to do business directly,
and that's what Parived eventually did,
bypassing Estrella Dinamarca.
Hello?
The thing is, some guys I know got a hold of a few things.
- Okay. - The kind of stuff Estrella deals in.
- I'd like you to take a look at it. - All right.
You had more Rolex watches the last time you showed me. Several.
I mean, obviously, no papers or anything. You had some, right?
No, man. I sold them, old man.
That's how he started getting into this world.
Because Parived, in his alleged role as an antiques dealer,
which is what he initially claimed to do,
realized it was much quicker and easier to sell a luxury watch than a painting
because of the price and people's desire for status.
And that's how he got to know the different players in this story.
He bought watches.
Rolex, Tudor…
The kind of stuff that shows up in the case file.
Hold on a second. I want to talk to Jaime.
Can I talk to him?
Jaime…
Don't talk about…
- Okay. - To avoid any problems, okay?
Perfect. Thank you.
Should we continue?
Okay.
The thing about Parived is… Parived had an antique gallery of his own.
And he was really… He liked collecting.
He also liked antiques. They have a certain artistry.
I knew him as a buyer, as a collector.
More… as a collector than a buyer.
Because of the gallery he owned.
Then appraise the other one at $8,000. We'll pay with three or four checks.
And it has to come with the box and papers?
No, not necessarily.
They just have to be Patek, Rolex, or AP.
You spoil me, man. You're unbelievable.
I'm… investing in the people who are gonna run the gold mine.
So I want to build those relationships because we're doing business.
Do you think they won't be well received?
Absolutely. In this world I move in,
I can't give them an Omega.
No, it's not about Omega, man. There are other things.
There's Orvis and Hermann. There's…
During this investigation, Parived's calls
were concise and generally…
Well, as for the people we investigated,
they always made a show of him doing business abroad
and he was also investing in mining.
That's what I wanted to ask because people have often speculated
about what Parived does for a living, what time he gets up in the morning.
Yeah.
"He gets up late."
"Lazy."
I get up at 5:00 in the morning.
I don't remember ever getting up at 10:00.
Never?
Never.
I sleep five hours a day.
You're not lazy.
You could show my face in this interview
because I'm not going to say anything that I think would be bad.
PARIVED'S FORMER ADVISOR
But it's because of the media attention
surrounding anything related to Marco or his former partner.
Basically, Parived's spirituality and his alleged conversion
so he could marry Tonka Tomicic in a Jewish ceremony…
What did you know about Parived before meeting him?
The big question, and for anyone who knows a little about show business, is
what does Parived do for a living?
It was the big question.
You know… people would say, "It can't be true."
Like, everyone kept saying he lived off his wife.
The guy had to be doing something, getting paid something.
By "work," I'm assuming you're referring to something that pays.
I hold stakes in mining companies
that we've worked very hard to build together in order to grow.
That's my job.
We first heard about Parived's mining business during the pandemic.
I started digging into it, and they said, "No, Parived's in mining in Brazil."
That was the first thing Parived clarified for us.
And then I was able to confirm with another source.
Eike Batista, a well-known Brazilian businessman…
His wife had a problem, a pretty serious illness.
That's when they named him Parived
so that he could provide spiritual guidance and help him.
He told me he spent five years traveling between Chile and Brazil,
And this millionaire businessman was so grateful
for the help Parived was able to provide both to him and to his family
that he gave him some mine holdings in northern Chile.
That's when he had to maintain these mine holdings.
That's been my motivation to work, which is understood to be paid
through investments,
through… a number of
very interesting development projects.
PARIVED'S MINE VALLENAR, CHILE
I'm directly involved in that.
In companies that manage some kind of mineral deposits in northern Chile.
He would often say, "The mine's doing really well."
"We're succeeding."
That gave him a little credibility
when it came to doing business,
so people would see him as a businessman.
"No, this mine is mine."
"Look, it's worth so much, and I'm the owner."
"These are my partners, and I need 40 million."
And some people would lend him the money, others wouldn't,
because the mine never actually made any money.
I always thought that was what motivated him in all this,
to make money to be able to get the mine up and running
and then fix all the problems he'd left along the way.
The problem is that…
I believe the mine isn't what people thought,
or what it was sold as, or what he thought he bought.
He bought something that won't yield what he thought.
And that's the problem he had.
And his notorious lack of business sense
is what leads him to end up funneling Tonka's checks into this whole network.
Because Parived bought from so many people.
He bought from a lot of different people,
so a lot Tonka's checks circulated through many different hands.
Jaime… don't talk about Tonka.
Okay.
It has to be dated Monday.
Dated Monday?
July 29th, 2019.
Perfect.
Cross it, put it in an envelope. Eduardo's on his way.
I'll leave it upstairs, honey. All right, kisses.
He relied on his wife's checks to fund his business dealings.
CHECK TOMICIC PETRIC TONKA
BANK OF CHILE
What's more trustworthy than a check from Tonka Tomicic?
I mean, she was the highest-paid TV host.
It was obvious that, one way or another, you'd get your money back.
And I never wanted to accept them.
How was I supposed to know if they were on good terms?
So I said, "Fine, I'll sell to you, but I'm not taking those checks."
Yeah, right.
A lot.
A lot. My mom was one of the first people to get Tonka's checks.
More and more checks started popping up everywhere,
until they had 75 of Tonka's checks that weren't worth anything.
Hello?
So, big guy, here's what I need you to do, please.
Let's stop payment on it.
Tell him we'll put a stop payment on it and sort it out.
I don't have a problem with that. I'll be there Monday or Tuesday next week.
That's when my money comes in.
I don't have a problem with that. I'll pay everything.
Because, in the end, I'm going to have to stop payment on it
so I don't cause any problems for my wife because the funds aren't there.
Tonka!
Why would someone making 250 million pesos at one point
end up having to borrow money?
That's when you realize it all goes back to Parived's business,
legitimate or not,
which had nothing to do with the mines,
but his urgent need to buy watches.
And that was why she had started covering that financial shortfall herself,
signing checks, borrowing money, and who knows what else.
And I think what he was doing was
simulating or feigning the life he had to have
because his wife, his partner, was on TV.
The winner is
Tonka Tomicic!
I can't believe it.
Well, thank you, José. Thank you, Mari.
And to each and every one of you. This award is really, really important.
I thank Channel 13 for this special broadcast.
People are watching across Chile, so a round of…
Let me tell you something. You know who my client is?
- Parived, for example, he… - You told me. Did the bastard pay you?
He's a asshole too.
I'm gonna talk to him now.
He needs to replace some checks he stopped payment on.
No.
And why? Wasn't it what he wanted after all?
No, it was what he wanted. The problem is I got the money for him.
You see what I mean?
So I have him by the short hairs.
The same earrings that woman wore to the Copihue de Oro Awards…
I can prove that all of those things belong to me.
- With photos? - Yeah, of course.
That fucking scumbag.
- Miserable millionaire. - That's how they are.
The people with the most money are the most fucked up.
And the biggest thieves.
That's how they rob you, shamelessly.
They want to steal my stuff, man.
That's how it is. The richest people are the most shameless.
Hi, how are you?
Good. You know I'm an honest man, and so are you.
Of course.
I don't wanna get you into trouble.
I stopped payment on the check. There's no funds.
Really good. And how are you?
Look, I've been doing really bad, but I didn't call for that.
I called because one of Tonka's checks bounced.
Why did it bounce?
- The signatures didn't match. - Okay.
Look, first of all, I do stuff with you.
- Anyone who wants to threaten my wife… - No, nobody's threatening anyone.
I'm telling you I have no say in what they're telling me.
He'd say, "Cash these checks for me," and they'd bounce.
Insufficient funds. And I thought, "Tonka? Insufficient funds?"
Parived is broke.
The guy's got the noose around his neck.
I know.
Remember what I told you? The guy's broke. He's fucked.
He's playing with money.
He'd panic and then go back the grind, like everyone,
and he'd ask for more and more. And it snowballed
and got bigger every time until, I think, it blew up.
The watch scandal network is a network with a structure.
Within that structure
were the people who stole,
the people who fenced,
the people who resold,
and also the financiers.
Why are the financiers so important?
Because some watches are worth 500 or 800, up to a million dollars.
So these financiers are people who typically have a lot of cash,
which is why they're so essential to this network
because they're the only ones who can bankroll these operations day-to-day.
TV host Tonka Tomicic also said that when she saw you in those videos,
attending a meeting with the so-called "King of Gold,"
you had expressed concern to her about what you called "bad meetings."
What was your relationship with Domingo Jalil and this person?
No, I'm not going to comment again on the details of the case file.
That's not my place.
But I will stress this again.
Unless there is conclusive evidence
about visual interpretations,
nothing can be argued.
When you analyze the evolution of the watch scandal,
you realize these financiers had the ability
to build an entire machine of bribed, corrupt detectives
who ended up providing privileged information in record time.
Hello.
Damn, I'm glad you answered.
Remember what you said the other day?
Yes.
You were right.
How did you find out?
They told me.
One has friends.
Of course, there's nothing yet.
Okay. So is there a solution or not?
Active commissioner Mauricio Jorquera
and retired prefect Cristian González…
Two detectives facing justice for bribery, breach of confidentiality, and corruption,
all in the midst of an investigation into jewelry and luxury watch smuggling.
How do we know these police officers leaked the information?
How do we know they demanded money in exchange for the information?
We realized someone was leaking the investigation
because, after a while, you get accustomed to this dynamic.
You know who's constantly on the phone, who talks more, and who talks less.
Then, all of a sudden, the communications just stopped.
And what did these people do?
They sold the information to the targets of the investigation,
and several important people found out they were under investigation
and the details.
Parived also learned we were investigating him.
There are always corrupt people who'd do that.
They sold them the case file,
and from there, it was passed around among them, the wealthiest ones.
But they never said, "Hey, Estrella, this is what's going on with you."
I never…
I didn't find out until the end.
Imagine if I'd known.
I would've protected myself like they did.
All the main players, for example Estrella Dinamarca,
stopped talking on the phone once it leaked.
We're talking fifty calls a day going to two.
That was very hard for us because it's not something you expect,
and it also made the investigation drag on much longer.
It was frustrating to start over again.
So we started watching our things with a little more suspicion.
That's the thing about a leak. You never know where it's coming from.
But human beings have this need to communicate.
Hello.
Hello, how did it go?
- All right, I guess. - Why?
Because they say this baby's sick.
Okay. But the girl's not dying, is she?
She's just sick.
Did they diagnose her yet?
- Or do they just know she's sick? - He'll take her to another doctor.
One of our investigative targets was talking about the sick girl,
when what he really meant was that the phone was "sick," so to speak.
The phone was being tapped.
Nevertheless, we resumed the investigation,
and nearly a year later,
we determined that, with all the evidence we had,
wiretaps, photographs, and videos,
it was time to bring the investigation to a close.
JANUARY 31, 2023
The investigation lasted years,
and it was finally time for us the make arrests and do the raid.
It's part of closing a chapter.
We experienced the lead-up to the raid with a lot of work
because you have to say what needs to be seized,
what to look for,
what kind of people they'd encounter at those homes,
how many people live there.
There were only a few of us on the team,
and honestly, we had to work twice as hard
because the idea was to conduct the raids simultaneously.
January 31, 2023.
That day, at 9:00 a.m., I was arguing a case.
And my phone starts ringing. It's ringing and ringing and ringing.
It was Domingo Lupallante.
"Mr. Domingo, I'm busy." And I continued my case.
"Mr. Domingo, I'm busy."
Mrs. Lupallante called. Mr. Domingo's daughter.
Mrs. Estrella's daughter-in-law.
The nephew… And I…
"Mr. Domingo, I'm busy. I'm in court."
"Carlos, they're raiding my house, and they're raiding the mall."
Holy shit!
The jewelry scandal blew wide open!
Police!
They showed up just like you see so often on TV,
the way they bust in on traffickers.
Just like that, they came in with those bazookas
and wrecked my security bars.
Police! Hands up!
The police came to my house as if I were…
Chapo Guzmán.
If I hadn't been in the hallway, the front door would've fallen on me.
These images show a major operation carried out by the PDI
across many locations in the metropolitan area.
It even extended beyond our borders.
So I turned around and headed to the mall.
Five tanks all around.
It looked like an FBI operation.
It was like Star Wars,
when they're guarding the fortress, and there are all these soldiers in white.
Hundreds. That's what it was like.
So there was also extra pressure and pressure from the media.
In the end, the press was there and a huge crowd.
Things could've gotten out of control at any moment.
They came to my workplace,
arrested me, handcuffed me, and took me away.
They handcuffed us, arrested us,
and never even cared what would happen to my daughter.
In total, there were 26 people with arrest warrants,
including Estrella Dinamarca and jeweler Domingo Lupallante.
It felt like they dislocated my arms because they handcuffed me behind my back.
They took me to the jewelry store, right in front of everyone.
I mean, what can I say? It was already 10:00 a.m.
It was still a big responsibility.
And then we took Estrella Dinamarca to the police station
before taking her to her detention hearing.
Everyone left after Estrella Dinamarca left.
She was, in fact, arrested because she's under investigation
on suspicion of selling watches to Mr. Marco Antonio López.
Breaking news.
The PDI is raiding Tonka Tomicic's home as part of the watch scandal.
Because the PDI raided the home of TV host Tonka Tomicic
and her husband, Marco Antonio López, also known as Parived.
All as part of the watch scandal.
When everything came out and the watch scandal broke,
I couldn't believe it.
It was like…
I remember I texted a journalist friend of mine and said…
"What is happening?"
And what's the situation with Parived, Marco Antonio López?
He's being investigated…
I think this is
one of the most humiliating moments of Tonka Tomicic's life
because every morning show was covering it.
And on top of that, she had to face it all alone
because, during that same broadcast,
we learned that Marco Antonio wasn't at the apartment.
At first, they said he'd gone out,
that he was running, he was out jogging.
The house is next to some hills, and every morning he'd go out for a walk.
But later we heard that, supposedly,
one of the cats had gotten lost in the hills.
ONE HOUR BEFORE THE RAIDS
That's what people said, anyway,
when we canvassed the neighborhood and talked to the neighbors.
The story was that he'd gone to look for a cat that had gotten loose.
HALF AN HOUR BEFORE THE RAIDS
I'm very attached to animals.
I started looking for him.
I asked the doorman.
He wasn't turning up.
Finally, I went up into the hills.
I went out that very morning to look for him.
But we assumed he fled to avoid the proceedings.
Well, according to the neighbors, he took off.
Their exact words were, "He ran like a rat."
From there, he started jumping over fences into neighboring properties.
And he got electrocuted twice.
She's been there for me.
But I've also been there for her. I always have and always will.
Always.
The nature of our relationship goes beyond form
and time.
It transcends
circumstances,
no matter
what they may be.
Even so, he managed to get in touch with a friend,
and Parived arrived at his lawyers' office around noon.
Whose idea was it to hide in the trunk of the car?
I can tell you it wasn't mine.
My car's tiny, man.
I have no idea how he squeezed in there.
He scrunched up.
And there was Parived, in the trunk.
And he'd lift his head… you know how coupes are.
You can lift the…
He'd appear and go, "Where are we going?" "Not yet. Get back down."
Yeah, that was an entertaining day.
And that's how it took him a day and a half to look for the cat
and show up in court.
Let's also hear what Estrella Dinamarca's former attorney had to say.
Estrella at the head of the organization…
…the criminal organizations led by Estrella Dinamarca.
The story was huge for about two months.
Every morning,
I'd be eating breakfast with all the inmates,
watching myself on every morning show and on every channel.
Estrella Dinamarca was running an international crime ring and all.
I mean, if that had been the case, things would've been very different
because I'd have had the money to hire the best lawyers,
just like they did.
Instead, I got the harshest sentence,
and I was the one who spent all the time behind bars.
With the passage of time and in hindsight,
there's always something you could've done better.
Therefore, remorse has more to do with guilt.
I don't feel guilty from that perspective.
And does that give you peace of mind?
Just as you see me.
Sanity is no fear.
Sorry?
Sanity is no fear.
And do you think the justice system will declare you not guilty?
COURTS OF JUSTICE
I believe the justice system will do what's appropriate and be fair.
TWO YEARS AFTER THE TRIAL BEGAN,
PARIVED RECEIVED HIS FINAL SENTENCE.
…travel, what's next?
Marco Antonio, do you deny being part of this network?
Thief in a suit! Hook us up with a watch!
Marco! One second.
- Thief in a cape! - What would you say to Tonka?
Careful. Guys, careful.
Up to here, guys, please.
So we can get inside.
…equivalent to, in the national currency, approximately 809,665 pesos,
which he acquired from a third party who stole or misappropriated them abroad
and brought them into the country without declaring them to customs
or paying the corresponding import duties.
Later that same year, in 2019,
Jaime Quiroga sold those watches to Marco López.
People with greater purchasing power
are always looking for a chance to pay little for something expensive.
I've also realized that, one way or another,
they get away with it.
It should be noted that the defendant is not ordered to pay costs,
for having freely admitted responsibility.
It's really hard to understand
how all of these buyers ended up walking free.
Because Chilean law is clear.
Buying stolen property is a crime.
Marco, are you at peace with the outcome of this plea deal?
As long as there are collectors, as long as there are watch enthusiasts,
there will always be this business
because it shows power, wealth, and status.
And the watch…
The watch is meant to impress other men.
It's been a long two years, hasn't it?
- Everything. - All good?
All good.
Why are you talking like that and getting so close?
- Because everything's fine. - Everything's fine now.
Any words for Tonka?
Are you happy?
Are you at peace?
IN 2025, PARIVED WAS ORDERED TO PAY A FINE OF $10,000 USD.
HE DID NOT SPEND A SINGLE DAY IN PRISON.
SHORTLY AFTER, TONKA'S AND PARIVED'S LAWYERS
WERE JAILED IN CONNECTION WITH MAJOR JUDICIAL CORRUPTION CASES IN CHILE.
ESTRELLA DINAMARCA SPENT EIGHT MONTHS IN PRISON DURING THE LEGAL PROCEEDINGS.
At this point, we're coming up on three years of probation
just for being her children.
And that's my point. Tonka had checks signed by her.
This woman knew everything.
So why are we the ones facing charges
while she never spent a single day in prison?
I'm not exactly a victim either.
It's been pretty risky for me too.
But there are things that don't really make sense to me
because I think we ended up taking the fall.
Jewelry has a really beautiful side, but it also has a really sad side.
I used to think, "Damn, instead of bringing joy into our lives,
jewelry has brought us pure sadness."
TONKA TOMICIC DIVORCED PARIVED SHORTLY AFTER THE WATCH SCANDAL BROKE.
AFTER TWO YEARS AWAY FROM THE SPOTLIGHT, SHE RETURNED TO TELEVISION IN 2025.
How does it feel to be back on TV?
Well, I'm happy, really excited.
The welcome I received was wonderful.
Honestly, it was incredible.
It's been a long time since we've seen you.
How are you feeling about the possible dismissal of the case
that kept you out of the media?
Well, it's more than possible.
We're expecting that to become a reality in March.
Does anyone really know what the future holds?
WHEEL OF FORTUNE
Can anyone predict where life will take us?
As human beings, we're always looking, somehow,
for things to happen when we want them to.
Unfortunately, that's not it works.
That's never the case.
Never.
Fate and the world don't bend to our tastes.
Neither do watches.
By that, I mean the hands of time.
