Original subtitles

Can you keep a lid on me being back? -There's something I should tell you.

MACKENZIE: Glenn's back.

Why are you wearing an apron?

It's a favour to Daisy.

You're running for council?

I'm gonna listen, Felix. I promise.

Autopsy report's on the way.

First thing.

I don't want to have to push you, Wheelbarrow. -Cheeky.

JILLIAN: It's overwhelming. There's so much

history with Glenn. And then this new man...

What? Leo? Mum, he's a colleague.

And now you're back home

and you're seeing Glenn all the time.

I've drawn a line under it.

Yep. So you keep saying. But...

..what are you doing about it?

I've seen Blood Wave 43 times.

You know Tarantino said

it's one of his all-time favourite movies?

How's that popcorn going, buddy?

Did I mention

that I'm the one doing the big intro tonight?

Yeah, only about 43 times.

If the director ever arrives.

Popcorn, mate. -OK.

Popcorn.

Can't believe we missed out on tickets.

At least we got some merch, though.

You have seen it?

Yeah, when it came out.

Must have been epic to watch it in Dolphin Cove

right after it was filmed here.

What did you think of it?

Yeah, it was great, um...

..opening credits.

Oh, is that it? Wh... What about the shoot-out?

I watched it again last night. It's magic!

GLASS SMASHES

WOMAN: Watch it.

MAN: You all right?

Does she look familiar to you?

It's my greatest honour

to welcome you all to this

20th anniversary screening of Blood Wave,

Miriam Callow's iconic surf-sploitation masterpiece!

WHOOPING AND CHEERING

Uh, we were expecting Miriam to be joining us,

so I could introduce the film in her presence.

But in the meantime,

how does one describe her oeuvre?

Well, to quote from my own humble movie newsletter,

which you can subscribe to at Jamie's Hot Takes...

Finally!

Ladies and gentlemen, Miriam Callow!

CHEERING

Miriam, it is such a pleasure.

Give me the mic, popcorn boy.

CROWD MURMURS MIRIAM SIGHS

First, I'd be remiss

if I didn't mention the man who's never forgiven me

for leaving him out of an award speech.

LAUGHTER

My husband and collaborator, Sullivan Callow.

APPLAUSE

I haven't always been true to you...

CROWD MURMURS

..but I've tried my best.

And thank you also to my darling daughter, Rosie.

She couldn't be here tonight.

APPLAUSE AND WHOOPING

And to the original surfer babe,

Angela St John.

Whoo!

WHOOPING

Hi.

The most self-entitled, demanding muse

a director could ask for.

CROWD MURMURS

And to you, my so-called fans,

I'd like to see you do one thing, anything,

as great as I have

with your sad, pathetic lives.

BOOING

Oh, kill me, why don't you?

Um... Thank you very much, Miriam,

for such a moving...speech.

Uh, everyone, Blood Wave.

Sorry. It's driving me bonkers.

Where do I know you from? -You don't.

You're a member of Dolphin Dippers Swim Club?

No.

You volunteer at the op shop?

Definitely not.

EERIE MUSIC ON FILM

APPLAUSE

The Singles Mingle down at the bowlo?

No.

She's Rosie Callow.

COLIN: The young girl from Blood Wave!

The one who says...

BOTH: That line.

Oh, my Lord, you've...you've got to say it.

Only if you buy me a drink.

Whatever you want.

Fine.

DEMONICALLY: Surf's up now.

CHEERING

Oh! Incredible.

Incredible!

Top shelf. He's buying.

COLIN LAUGHS

CROWD WHOOP

GUNSHOTS ON FILM

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

Well, that's done.

Come on.

Miriam?

Miriam.

Miriam!

FOOTSTEPS APPROACH

JILLIAN: Another quiet night in?

Murder books?

Honestly! How is that nourishing for the heart?

Some things are more important than nourishing the heart.

Ha! Nothing is more important.

You know, you used to read poetry

when you were a little girl.

Yeah, when I was young and an idiot.

You used to write poetry.

You only know that because you read my diary.

How was I to know it was a secret?

It had a lock on it.

JILLIAN SCOFFS

You know what? You could use a little poetry these days.

Some theatre, cinema.

Cinema? -Anything to open your heart.

JILLIAN OPENS DRAWER

What are you looking for?

An old shoe box.

Red, maybe. From those ballet flats. Remember?

I do not.

Oh, well...

It'll show up.

Night.

Where are you going?

To sleep under the stars.

It's the solstice.

PHONE RINGS

Colin?

Hoo! Victim is Miriam Callow.

The...film director?

Blood Wave?

How did she die?

Fatal gunshot wound.

Killed during the 20th anniversary screening

of her own movie.

No-one saw the shooter.

What time was she shot? -Uh, well,

there's a famous shoot-out at the end of the movie.

Lots of noise and music.

Must have covered the noise of the actual gunshot.

So based on the run time, would have been...

..just after ten.

Missed the show.

So, one gunshot

in the lower abdomen.

No exit wound.

MACKENZIE: She's immaculately groomed.

But she bites her nails.

Any idea where the shot came from?

From the angle of the wound

and the position she's sitting...

..without a full ballistic analysis...

An estimate's fine.

Bit loose of you, Mackenzie.

I'd say...

..the shooter was...

..somewhere around...

..here.

Looks like a .22 casing.

So, she was shot from across the cinema.

That's... Well, it's at least 20 metres.

LEO: You'd have to be a very good shot.

Yeah. -We're on an outcrop here.

It's a sheer drop all the way around.

The only way in or out is from the entrance

up there. -Yes?

What are you doing for dinner tomorrow night?

What?

Oh. Like...dinner?

With me. -Mm-hm.

A date.

I like you. And I think it'd be fun.

Fine if you don't want to. Totally up to you.

No...

I, ju... Um...

I just... I...

Oh...

Gosh. Is that a bat?

Oh. -Gosh.

No stress.

Sort out your bat.

Get back to me.

Like I wasn't even here! -I know!

How many exits?

Oh, I mean still... still just the one.

They all had to scan their ticket to get in,

so we've got a record of everyone

that was in the audience.

Anyone know the victim?

SCOFFS

Well, e-everyone.

Blood Wave became this cult surf-sploitation movie.

It started her whole Hollywood career.

No, I mean, any next of kin, enemies,

friends?

Her husband, uh, Sullivan Callow, the producer.

Um, also...

..apparently, Miriam made a speech before the movie.

She admitted to having an affair.

Well, announced it, actually, to everyone.

So Miriam betrayed you.

Then publicly humiliated you.

I loved Miriam. She meant everything to me.

So, no, what you're implying is wrong.

During the movie, did you get up, move around,

go anywhere?

No. I was sitting with Angela.

Angela St John, star of Blood Wave.

And she'll confirm this? -Absolutely.

Except for when she stormed out.

Well, I'm available now, so lock it in.

Lock what in?

Detective Sergeant Mackenzie Clarke.

Sorry.

I'm in such a state. Terrible shock.

Who were you talking to?

Press, wanting an interview.

I'm Angela St John.

Dear friend of Miriam's.

Of course they want to talk to me.

Apparently, you stormed out during Miriam's speech.

Why?

She called me a diva, amongst other things.

I thought you said she was a dear friend.

And artistic midwife.

Collaborator. Sparring partner.

It's hard for...ordinary people to understand.

Why don't you explain,

for an ordinary person like myself,

where were you during the movie?

I stood up the back,

waited till it started and took my seat.

So many fans.

It can be overwhelming.

COLIN LAUGHS

Sorry. Angela St John. It's a pleasure.

STAMMERS

Is-Is it true you nearly didn't audition for Blood Wave?

I barely knew I was an actor until Miriam set eyes on me.

Oh.

Don't directors just point the camera

and tell you where to stand?

No. They're the visionary behind a film.

They control every moment.

And a director like Miriam, she can make or break you.

How did she seem tonight?

I didn't get to speak to her. She was late,

which is rare for her.

But you'd seen her recently? -Yes.

We've been workshopping my character for the sequel.

A sequel to Blood Wave?

We're nearly ready to shoot.

I guess that's all over now.

FELIX: So, the door staff said that no-one came in or out

once the movie started.

And once they found the body,

they kept everyone here until we showed up.

Right. So if no-one left...

..the killer must have been in the audience.

So the weapon must be, too. Any sign?

No. Nothing so far.

Right. Well...

..secure the site.

Tomorrow we have to go over every inch,

pick up all these...guns,

see if any of them are real.

Oh...

Turn these lights off.

Copy.

So...the killer

was in the audience? -Hmm.

They were right here.

LIGHTS CLANK OFF Oh.

Colin, during the shoot-out scene,

how dark is the screen?

Well, um, Angela's character is being chased

by the surf demon, the one who took her daughter.

Then there's the blood moon eclipse.

Don't need a recap, Colin.

Pretty much as dark as this.

Darkened cinema.

A near-impossible target.

So...

..how did the killer make such a perfect shot?

It's like something out of a movie.

It's not a movie, Colin.

It's murder.

Hey, did you know that Miriam Callow

was the first Australian woman to direct a major studio movie?

Oh, I would have loved to have met her -

and just got some tips on female leadership

for my campaign.

Oh, did you deliver my flyers, by the way?

Yes. And I only got chased by three dogs.

Oh, no. Animal control...

I might need a policy for that.

Morning. -Morning.

Morning.

Any sign of the weapon?

No. We just finished

doing another search around the site again,

and there was nothing on anyone's person last night

or in their bags.

So...

..where did the killer go after they shot Miriam?

And what did they do with the gun?

That's a bit unhygienic.

JAMIE: I have no idea how that got there!

COLIN: Where were you during the movie?

Uh, walking around, selling popcorn.

CHEERING

Like The Sweet Smell Of Success.

Except she was selling... -BOTH: Cigarettes.

COLIN CHUCKLES

COLIN CLEARS HIS THROAT

Which would give you the perfect opportunity

to shoot Miriam, hide the gun in your tray,

then put it in the popcorn machine.

No. I'm a fan.

I'm a screenwriter as well.

Unproduced, so far.

But Miriam taught me everything I know.

Right. So when did you last speak to her?

Well, I've never met her.

Not for want of trying.

But we spoke quite intimately last night

when I introduced her film.

What did she say?

"Give me the mic, popcorn boy."

She wasn't even scheduled to speak.

Miriam wasn't meant to make a speech?

No. And she insulted the entire audience, not just me.

Never meet your heroes, I guess.

Um... CLEARS HER THROAT

Where did she go afterwards?

Uh, well, she got a drink

and then took her seat.

Miriam refused to meet you? -Yes.

Then she insulted everyone. -Mm-hm.

Then she was shot? -Correct.

During her own movie? -Yes.

With a gun found in your popcorn machine?

Does seem that way.

You think I'm the villain here?

Do I need a lawyer? -Do you have one?

No.

Mum, I'm working.

Well, when did you last see it?

Oh, in a shaft of dwindling sunlight?

Oh, in the dying days of autumn?

Mm.

Well, have you looked under the bed?

Keep looking.

"Shaft of dwindling sunlight"?

I'm ignoring her.

So...?

Oh, Felix has a theory on why Miriam was late.

A staff member

saw her in the staff car park before the movie

arguing with someone in her car.

Who?

Uh, woman. Brunette. Early 20s.

Actually fits the description of...

Rosie Callow.

H-How do you know?

Stayed up reading last night.

Jamie's blog is a trove of intel.

Mm. Well, apparently, Rosie called her mum...

A monster!

Tried her mobile a number of times. No luck.

Last seen here last night at the Surf Club.

By who? -By me.

Oh, and me, and Felix.

Uh, we bought her a few drinks.

She's in Blood Wave!

Declined.

GLENN: Her credit card was declined,

but the boys were buying, for some reason.

After you closed up, did you see where she went?

She stayed, actually.

She was too drunk to drive, so I confiscated these.

Colin!

KNOCKS ON DOOR

Colin, right?

Detective Senior Constable Colin Cartwright.

This is Detective Sergeant Mackenzie Clarke.

What's going on?

Rosie, your mother was killed last night

during the screening.

COLIN: We're...very sorry.

ROSIE VOMITS

Sorry.

What happened?

Uh, someone shot her.

Well, do you know who?

Well, we're hoping you might have some ideas.

Why would I? I was here last night. Wasn't I, Colin?

Is this Miriam's car?

A bit dated.

Is the drinking how you cope with Blood Wave

bringing up a lot of stuff?

You resented your mother for making you a child star?

It's more complicated than that.

Having an artistic mother can be...

..challenging.

Yeah, well, that's definitely true.

Is that why you called her a monster?

Well, I've called her much worse over the years.

Look, is that all?

We're just trying to work out

who might have had a motive to kill your mother.

Well, it's not me.

It might have been a screw-up,

but no matter how many mistakes I made...

..Mum always knew how to make it better.

PHILOMENA: Reggie? -Mm-hm.

Why am I getting calls from Clementine Clovelly

at the Dolphin Cove Echo

asking me to comment on your political campaign?

My PR is working!

I'm running for local council.

If we have political affiliations in this building,

we lose our jobs.

Do it in your own time.

MACKENZIE: When the jacket she was wearing when she died

cost 1,500 bucks, I doubt it.

COLIN: Fine. Agree to disagree.

So we've got Miriam's husband, Sullivan Callow.

Said he didn't get up

during the screening.

He also said that the affair

Miriam admitted to in her speech was old news.

So why would he kill her now?

Have we got anything on Sullivan's record?

Uh, no. There was a break-in reported earlier this week

at Miriam and Sullivan's.

Nothing stolen. -Oh.

Rosie, though...

What, history?

A string of drug charges, mainly possession.

A few convictions.

She's still on probation.

Another charge, and she's going to end up in jail.

The gun was found in the popcorn machine.

Jamie Floss runs that popcorn stand.

A huge fan of Miriam's.

Yeah, I read his blog. It's borderline stalking.

Oh, they're going to film the sequel

at North Point Headland.

CHUCKLES

MACKENZIE: Jamie's blog has links and transcripts

of all of Miriam's interviews.

She was famously polite, gracious, reclusive.

So...why did she make an impromptu speech

and insult everyone?

Witnesses said she seemed drunk.

Oh. Need to check tox for alcohol.

Any leads on this gun?

It's unregistered.

And a bit rusty. No idea who the owner is.

PHILOMENA: Mm.

Mackenzie... -Let's go.

Let me in! Let me in now!

Her key doesn't work.

OBJECT SMASHES INSIDE

Police. We're coming in!

ROSIE: It's all your fault!

Rosie! Rosie, Rosie. What's all his fault?

I didn't shoot Miriam. Rosie's upset.

She's lashing out.

He would say that.

Do you have any reason to believe

your dad killed your mum?

MACKENZIE: Your mum made a speech last night.

Admitted to having an affair.

Was it a difficult relationship, your mum and dad?

He spent years making her life miserable.

Punishing her for what happened on Blood Wave.

For the affair?

For everything.

Do you recognise this?

Yes. It's mine.

It's the gun from Blood Wave.

Do you know how to shoot it?

Well, I know how to pull the trigger.

I couldn't hit the side of a barn.

That thing's only ever fired blanks.

So you say.

Anyway, it was stolen from Miriam's study

on Wednesday night. Someone broke in.

Well, did you report it missing?

No. It's unlicensed.

I don't know anything about that.

It's pretty convenient that the gun was stolen.

You don't think?

There's nothing convenient about Miriam being murdered.

We had so much ahead of us.

Like the next Blood Wave, for example?

Why make a sequel after so long?

To get back to our indie roots.

We shot Blood Wave on a shoestring.

No location permits, guerrilla style.

It was exhilarating.

It was a nightmare. He was a nightmare.

I barely survived that film.

Mum did everything she could to make up for it.

Dad never did.

SULLIVAN: Blood Wave was intense,

that's for sure.

But it stands as a testament to our family.

I'm so proud of it.

You said the gun was stolen from Miriam's study?

Yeah.

What does he get out of it?

If Sullivan killed Miriam?

And how did he pull it off in such a crowded space?

So the gun was there on its stand.

Jamie's blog was right.

North Point Headland is where they're filming

the sequel. -I could have been an extra!

Lipstick.

Miriam's diary. -Anything?

A few appointments.

Dinner. Coffee. Nails at 10am on Saturday.

Nails?

No.

Her nails were a mess. She clearly didn't get them done.

Get Felix and Reggie onto that.

Mm-hm.

So...they took the gun.

But they were looking for something else.

Things are out of place in here.

What are you looking for?

So many scripts!

MACKENZIE: They were about to start filming,

so where is that sequel?

COLIN: I'd love to work in a hammock.

MACKENZIE: No, you wouldn't.

There's no lumbar support and they ruin your hair.

Still... Reading movie scripts all day...

"Final Date.

"Romantic date turns into a night with a killer."

CHUCKLES

Have you seen Blood Wave?

Yes. Yeah. Yeah, when it first came out.

What was your favourite bit?

The...

Oh, the surfing.

Yeah, but which surfing?

It's hard to say, because, you know, it was all...

..so...

..thrilling.

Ha!

Oh! -MACKENZIE CHUCKLES

Blood Reawakening.

A, uh... A Blood Wave sequel

by E James Floss.

I thought E James had more heft than Jamie.

Hmm.

You told us you'd never met Miriam,

but she has your script.

Miriam and I were collaborating.

I didn't tell you, because when you're involved

with someone of her calibre, that is strictly confidential.

Yet on your blog, you posted a location of the sequel.

North Point Headland?

Well, yes, I was working on the movie.

Or...you broke into her house.

That's a fanciful plot twist.

One of her awards had been moved.

You see, I bet...

..a film buff like you couldn't help yourself.

You had to hold one of those awards in your hand

and make the speech

you'd been rehearsing in your head for years.

Take a selfie.

So if we checked your phone...

I-I didn't break in!

And... Well, I did, um, for a good reason, I swear.

To steal the gun. -What gun?

The gun that killed Miriam Callow.

No, I-I didn't see any gun. I-I wanted my script.

I wrote and rewrote it for ten years,

all on a typewriter,

like they did in classic Hollywood.

And then, finally, when it was perfect,

I sent it to Miriam.

I waited, but...

..nothing.

And then they announce a sequel.

That is my name. My movie.

Miriam stole it.

And this script is the proof!

Did you confront her about it at the screening?

Well, I didn't really get the chance.

MACKENZIE: She steals your life's work,

and who are people going to believe?

The acclaimed Miriam Callow or a nobody like you?

I'm not a nobody.

The gun was stolen from her study,

and you just admitted to breaking in, so...

..how do you explain that...

..E James?

Gun, bullet and casings are a match.

Your gun is definitely the murder weapon.

What about her bloods?

Clean.

She wasn't drunk?

So...why did she seem out of it?

And...why did she make that speech?

There is one other thing.

Miriam's hair was... -I know. - The date.

Huh? Wait, what?

What did you say?

No, you go first. I'm fine.

I insist. I insist.

Harder.

Miriam's hair was matted at the back.

But she was immaculately groomed. - That's odd.

That's what I thought.

Now, about that date?

What about it? -Yeah, what about it?

I'll tell you something about it.

Absolutely none of my business.

Private matter.

I'll be outside if you need me.

MACKENZIE: Uh...

CHUCKLES NERVOUSLY

So?

I...

Uh... I'm just, um...

I'm not really a...

..person...

Dinner. Dinner. Dinner date person.

I'm not a dinner date person.

Right.

More a, uh...

..quietly-read-a-book person.

Yeah.

Mm.

We can do that if you want.

I'm really flattered. I am. Um...

Um... But no date for me.

Thank you.

No worries.

That's it? I asked. You said no.

All done.

I'm disappointed, sure, but...

..I'll live.

Reports for you there.

Feel free to have a quiet read.

First, he asked you out on a date

right in front of me, no bother.

Can we talk about something else?

Did someone ask you on a date? Who?

Oh, it doesn't matter.

No, it's great for you, whoever it is.

Leo, I'm guessing. He's a good guy.

Can... Can we talk about something else, please?

Hello, darling.

OK. Blood Wave.

I was at the premiere in town.

My God, what an unforgettable movie.

Tell that to these two. They don't remember a thing.

JILLIAN: Well, it doesn't surprise me.

They were kissing throughout the entire film.

Ah! And the rest!

By golly, the hickeys on you when you came home!

Remember, Glenn?

Mum! -What?

Can we talk about anything else?

Wait, wait, wait. I did not give you permission

to go to an R-rated film when you were 15 years old!

JILLIAN: Oh, Phil, you're so naive.

Every teenager knows how to sneak in and out of the house

without their parents knowing.

How often did this happen?

JILLIAN: Teenage hormones.

We just have to surrender

to the power!

PHONE BUZZES

Oh, it's Felix! It's Felix. Very good.

Mm.

Someone's posted a video of Miriam's speech.

Oh, my God... Phil, did I ever tell you about the evening

Glenn came over to the house

and they thought I was out? That was quite...

OK, that is quite enough of that, Mother!

We're going. What? Oh, bubby.

We're not done with this.

You're not too old to be grounded.

COLIN: Ooh.

Only saw the opening credits?

Stop it.

She's the reason you came back, isn't she?

Weeks up the coast, alone with your own thoughts.

And the only thing that brought you back was Mackenzie Clarke.

You need to tell her.

It doesn't matter, Col. She's clearly moving on.

She said no, by the way.

To the date with Leo.

Really?

First, I'd be remiss

if I didn't mention the man who's never forgiven me

for leaving him out of an award speech.

My husband and collaborator, Sullivan Callow.

Oh! I just had a memory about my missing box.

So hostile, when she was famously polite.

When I think back to the moment I lost it...

It's like she's goading the audience.

JILLIAN: ...my knee hurts.

MACKENZIE: What?

Not literally hurts.

More like remembering a pain from past moment.

So...

SINGSONG ...a date with Leo?

JILLIAN LAUGHS

I said no.

GASPS Oh, God.

Of course you did.

Oh!

You know, sometimes you can be all brains, Mackenzie.

That is not the insult that you think it is.

When your dad died,

my heart felt like it stopped, too.

I thought if I waited, it'd...start up again.

But I realised...

..if I wanted to be alive...

..be truly alive...

..I would have to start it myself.

What did you do?

I took a risk.

It's as simple...

..and as terrifying as that.

And to the original surfer babe, Angela St John.

APPLAUSE

JILLIAN: I saw Angela the other day

at the supermarket on the checkout.

You know, she's a single mum now.

Two kids. Doing it very, very tough.

Oh.

MIRIAM: -And to you, my so-called fans...

No, you're done.

Here. Try not to sleep in the hammock any more.

My turn. I'll do you. Absolutely not.

..your sad, pathetic lives.

BOOING

JILLIAN: Absolutely.

Oh, kill me, why don't you?

You know, none of the staff at that last salon

had even heard of Miriam Callow.

Neither had you till yesterday.

True.

But what if it's got nothing to do with nails?

What do you mean?

Well, we've been to every nail salon in Dolphin Cove,

and no-one remembers her.

But remember the scene in Blood Wave

where the demon scrambles up the letters

in Millie's name?

What, like a code?

What are they doing? Filming something?

Hmm.

FELIX: Commercial for Shank Meats.

My cousin Louise got cast in one of their ads!

It was a three-year contract.

She's a vegetarian, but she had to take it

because it was worth a mint.

And then they replaced her with a bigger name.

I'd love to know who.

Oh, I know who.

DIRECTOR: Rolling, people. Quiet on set.

Who?

DIRECTOR: OK, take 37. Action.

For top-quality sausages, you can't beat Shank Meats.

Shanks a lot!

LAUGHS

DIRECTOR: And cut.

All right, we'll go again.

Uh, Angela, for the next one,

could you do one where you're desperately hungry?

Certainly were desperate, weren't you, Angela?

You needed the Shank ad. Had two kids.

Working at the supermarket to make ends meet.

And the only thing that stood in your way was Miriam.

COLIN: You certainly wasted no time calling your agent

once Miriam had been killed.

Well, I'm available now, so lock it in.

MACKENZIE: You were available because Miriam was dead.

You couldn't do the ad and be in the sequel, right?

Fine.

The ad is a three-year deal, and I need the work.

It's not a crime.

Did you visit Miriam's house this week?

Well, your lipstick

was on a glass in her study, which suggests you were there.

So did you take the gun?

What?

No. Wh...? No, I was there on Tuesday,

but I don't know anything about a gun.

Why were you there, then?

I only agreed to do the sequel

because I thought it would be well paid.

Miriam's a big Hollywood director now,

but she said she had to make the movie on a shoestring.

Sullivan said it was to get back to their artistic roots.

Spare me.

All that man understands is control and profit.

So I went to Miriam

to beg her to let me do the ad.

MACKENZIE: You argued?

She said she wouldn't let me do it.

Look, I'm just trying to pay the rent.

I've got two kids, I'm broke,

and I have to put food on the table.

Sounds like killing Miriam would solve all your problems.

I'd be better off shooting Sullivan.

He pulls the strings.

But what use would I be to my kids in jail?

"Reggie Rocco is rocking your council."

"Reggie Rocco - simply the best."

How's this for a campaign slogan?

"Vote Reggie Rocco

"because she is as solid as a rock."

Reggie! Enough!

What?

They're all wrong. -Hey?

What are your strengths?

Empathetic, intuitive, humble -

you know, just for starters.

As annoying as it is, everyone knows you.

Yeah. -And you know them.

And you care. -Yeah.

Use that.

Hey, what are we doing here?

Well, Miriam had "nails" in her diary.

An anagram for nails is?

Slain. We're on Slain Road.

And what time did she have it in there?

Ten o'clock.

"10 Slain Road.

"Carla Ross.

"Family lawyer."

So why would Miriam need to see a family lawyer?

Miriam was planning to divorce you.

That's why she was sleeping in the hammock, wasn't it?

To get away from you.

Her hair was matted at the back.

No, it's because I snore.

She concealed the meetings in her diary with a lawyer

because she was terrified you'd find out.

Everyone has secrets, even in a long marriage.

COLIN: You were across everything in her life,

especially the accounts.

All in your name.

We've checked.

Miriam was a duffer with money.

We agreed I should handle it.

That's why she drove such an old car.

You wouldn't give her access to her own finances.

That's getting a bit hysterical.

You were controlling her emotionally, financially.

Not just Miriam. Rosie, too.

Rosie needed tough love. Miriam wouldn't see that.

It had nothing to do with the fact that you discovered

Miriam wanted a divorce?

Because you cut Rosie off

when you found out -

to punish Miriam, because she wanted to leave you,

because she wanted to take back what was rightfully hers -

money that she earned.

Miriam needed me.

She couldn't make a good movie without me.

You were never going to set foot

on the set of that sequel. She would have divorced you.

She wasn't capable! I told her.

But she didn't listen?

She was never gonna leave me.

Because you wouldn't let her.

So you pretended the gun you owned was stolen, and shot her.

It was a packed cinema.

So you tell me, how on earth did I do that?

Sullivan's right.

Even if he did kill her, it's a shot in the dark

from 20 metres across a crowded cinema.

OK. So...they all have motive and access to the gun.

But how did they shoot her?

And why,

if she's known for being so private and polite,

did she make that speech insulting everyone?

CLEARS HER THROAT

Last weekend, Sullivan discovers Miriam's plans

to divorce him and he cuts Rosie off.

Tuesday, Angela goes to Miriam's house and they argue.

Wednesday, Jamie breaks in

and Sullivan reports a robbery.

But not a missing gun.

Well, hang on. No, go back. -MACKENZIE: Mm.

Wednesday was the break-in. -Mm-hm. Right.

But Sullivan changed the locks on Tuesday.

The day before the break-in.

Why would Sullivan...

We assumed it was after.

Right.

But what if it was before? -That's what I'm saying.

It was before.

I checked with the locksmith.

"Monster."

NO AUDIO

And that speech...

Before. Not after.

Oh, that's it!

Colin, let's go. -Where are we going?

To get some merch!

What are we looking for, exactly?

Hmm.

Director's greatest work.

What does a director do?

They decide what the audience sees

from the first take to the final shot...

..which is exactly what Miriam Callow did.

She directed every detail of her own murder.

Of course she did. She was brilliant.

We couldn't figure out how the killer took

an impossible shot across a dark cinema.

Because they didn't.

Did they, Rosie?

How would I know? I wasn't there.

No, you weren't.

Because Miriam was protecting you -

something she failed to do when she made you a child star.

But as you said, she wanted to make up for it -

to protect you from your father,

Sullivan,

who was controlling you both financially.

Miriam had finally had enough.

She was going to divorce him and take back the money

that was rightfully hers.

You and your mum, you were going to be free of him.

But Sullivan found out

about the divorce and punished Miriam by cutting Rosie off.

Stopped your allowance, changed the locks.

Well, you were furious.

You were done with his controlling, cruel behaviour.

And you knew where to find a gun.

And every child knows how to sneak in and out of their house

without their parents knowing. But...

..not without leaving fingerprints.

Rosie stole the gun...

..and loaded the magazine.

Rosie wasn't even at the movie.

No, which was masterful direction from Miriam.

Witnesses heard you in the car calling your mother...

A monster!

But it wasn't your mother you were talking about, was it?

It was your father.

He's a monster!

He made your mum's life miserable.

Yours, too.

You were going to kill him.

Did Miriam try and stop you

when you argued in the car? Is that how it happened?

MIRIAM: No!

Yes, Mum. Give me that. Give it to me!

No. Listen!

GUNSHOT

Yes.

JAMIE: But Miriam was at the screening.

She was fine.

Which is what she wanted you to see,

what she directed you to see.

Miriam knew she was dying

and that, with Rosie's record, she would end up in jail.

She could have gone to the hospital

and saved her own life,

but she would have destroyed her daughter's.

She did what any mother would do.

She protected her child.

She wrote the script for her own murder.

Give me the gun.

MACKENZIE: So you went to the Surf Club

to write yourself off and give yourself an alibi.

Meanwhile,

Miriam wiped the gun and the casing clean

and, before anyone arrived,

grabbed a T-shirt from the merch stand

to staunch the wound that was killing her.

Then she disposed of the gun.

And then she positioned the shell casing across the cinema

to make it look like that's where the killer had stood.

But to really sell the murder,

she had to do something out of character.

Miriam was famously polite,

gracious, punctual.

Rarely made public appearances.

But that night...

..she showed up late and made the speech of her life...

..trying to save yours.

Miriam appeared to be out of it because she was

bleeding to death from a gunshot wound.

GASPS

She insulted Jamie, Sullivan, Angela,

then the entire audience.

Even goaded the audience

into killing her.

Oh, kill me, why don't you?

After her speech,

Miriam went to get a drink

so she could get rid of the T-shirt

that was padding the wound.

And then she sat down and died.

Miriam knew that the gunshots in the shoot-out scene

would provide the perfect cover,

making us believe that she'd been shot during the movie

and not before.

The things a mother will do for their child!

Miriam Callow created her final moment,

and she framed it perfectly.

A remarkable director.

Shot while watching her own movie.

When, in truth...

..you killed the mother you loved

instead of the father you hated.

She said it would be all right. She said she'd fix it.

She always knew how to make things better.

Yeah.

She did.

But, Rosie...

..you left her to die.

It should have been you, Dad. It should have been you!

Rosie Callow, you are under arrest

for the murder of Miriam Callow.

You do not have to say anything,

but anything you do say may be used in evidence.

This way.

COLIN MURMURS

JILLIAN: I knew you'd get there in the end.

"From Mum, to keep you company,

"whenever I'm away." -"Whenever I'm away."

A book of poetry.

You're leaving?

I've had an idea for a sculpture

with a particular sandstone.

And...

Well...

..you know. -I know.

That will help.

With what?

To start your heart again.

Uh...

SOBS

Sweetheart.

I'm so proud of you.

There's Trevor.

"Reggie Rocco. Vote for who you know."

It's perfect.

Well, that's thanks to you.

Here.

Sorry. What-What is this?

That's an anonymous contribution

to your campaign fund.

Dropped in at the station.

No idea where it came from.

But obviously, someone thinks

you'd make a tremendous councillor.

Thank you.

Mate.

VEHICLE PULLS UP

Ooh. There she is.

Now's your chance.

Go and tell her.

You realise there's a whole beach just there?

Yeah.

But I hate sand.

RADIO: One of the best songs of 1983.

I never got you anything

for your birthday. -I love it.

Oi! What's this?! -That's a hand.

I know who that is.

PHILOMENA: We are dealing with the past.

What are you accusing me of? Disciplining my own son?

COLIN: - Did it not go well

when you spoke to her about your feelings?

Glenn! Glenn!

What was it about?

Something we're both very passionate about.

Phil always says she's fine.

There is no way she's fine.
