It's my birthday!
Right there, baby!
Whoo!
There's a fight.
Hey, cops! Back up!
Every year, the Lake of the Ozarks gets
a little busier.
We have so many people coming to this small town
in the middle of Missouri.
We're grateful for the visitors,
but sometimes we're outnumbered.
Stop, get on the ground now!
Easy now. Easy now.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!
Here in Sunrise Beach, our little population goes
to the thousands very, very quick.
Get out of the car now!
Osage Beach is a tourist town.
When people visit here, they bring their problems with them.
Open your door!
I don't think you're a piece of [bleep], sir.
I just think you're stupid.
We really got to keep our head on a swivel.
Haley, fight at movies.
We added a few more officers,
getting our department up to full staff.
If something happens to me, you gotta go tell our mom.
What we pulled off
with 13 officers is nothing short of spectacular.
We're gonna get you out of here.
Thank you very much.
This was the best-case scenario.
We let them have their happy reunion.
We're gonna get her cut out.
Okay.
- Good job, seriously. - Thank you.
We're excited to see what's ahead.
- You're engaged. - Not yet, but coming.
It'll be a thing.
Welcome to the lake!
That's what I'm talking about.
Appreciate you, bro.
Let's rock and roll.
Memorial Day weekend!
It's Memorial Day weekend,
and it's the kickoff to a big summer here in Lake Ozark.
It's my third summer as chief,
and we've had some changes since last summer.
Corporal Harvey went to work for the fire department.
So now, we have to figure out who's gonna be a new partner
for K9 Donzi.
And then, we have Officer Johnson who's getting ready
to have a baby in just a couple of weeks.
And while that's exciting, we need to figure out
how we're gonna fill those spots
and fill 'em pretty quickly.
Because it's the 60th anniversary of our city,
and it's the 250th anniversary of America.
And so we're gearing up
for probably the biggest summer we've had yet.
Hey, hey!
You can't have the beer out here.
It's important to us that people are able to come down here
and enjoy what's in Lake Ozark.
We gotta make sure they can do that safely.
So we're making a few adjustments, particularly to
how we patrol down here on the strip.
Guys, we have an ordinance that you can't smoke marijuana
in public places.
- Oh, sorry. - I appreciate it, guys.
I will throw it out.
Thank you. - Yep.
We have adopted a couple of new ordinances
because we have this many people and we have the alcohol.
It can get off the hook real quick if we're not careful.
Whoo!
- I know, I can't believe it. - That's awesome.
First time in the Ozarks.
It'll be a good time.
Very nice meeting you, Karl.
You too. You too.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! Let go of his shirt!
Let go of his shirt!
Back up!
All right, hold on. We're trying to figure it out.
Hey, stop!
You better chill out, or you're gonna go to jail.
Sit down. Have a seat.
Back up or you're gonna go to jail.
Back off, back off!
Put your hands behind your back.
Put your hands behind your back!
Let's get him up and get him over there.
Hey, this way, bud.
This way, bud! Thank you.
What do you guys got on him?
Assault on law enforcement.
Where'd he swing at, or assault?
I looked over,
and he was fighting with Johnson.
Well, unfortunately, you start putting your hands
on cops, everyone thinks--
Maybe you shouldn't have drank so much.
All right.
- What do you got? - We went over there.
You was trying to separate 'em.
He went for the other guy that you was dealing with.
I was trying to keep him back. He just grabbed hold of me.
Like [bleep] grabbed hold of me and was trying
to lift me up.
I think he's just so intoxicated,
he doesn't even know who he was grabbing.
He said he didn't realize he was grabbing a cop.
This individual decided he wanted
to go hands on, grab hold of my vest.
I got no idea why he went off like he did,
but alcohol and bad decisions, I guess.
Look, you can either get cited too
for fighting in public, do you want that?
Yep.
If you don't wanna talk to me
and believe me, you're gonna hear it from the sergeant.
I just told you, it's that simple.
I understand that you were engaged in a fight.
Yes.
Well, when we get there, we have to find out
what's going on.
So when--
All right. Have a good day.
Where's your family members at?
Are you guys with him?
Yeah? All right.
He's highly intoxicated.
He put his hands on this cop over here.
So you're gonna have to talk to him what he wants to do.
Okay.
What's his deal?
Where's your Uber?
Where?
Hang tight.
Issue him a fighting in public ticket.
Here's what we're gonna do.
You're gonna get a fighting in public ticket.
You're gonna get in your Uber, you're gonna leave.
You're good. You're good.
Well, here's the thing.
Grabbing hold of a cop is a bad idea.
If I would've thought you was going for something
on my vest, that would've been a lethal force situation.
You don't want that. I don't want that.
You put me in a really bad position, dude.
Go ahead and turn around for me.
All right. All right, hey, you got a court date.
If you do not appear or pay
before this date, they will issue a warrant for your arrest.
You understand?
All right, they've got your Uber.
Yep.
Ultimately, Ofc. Johnson decided
to issue a disorderly conduct, fighting in public
and releasing him on a citation.
Another exciting day on the strip.
It's not that exciting. I promise.
Copy.
Just give me a minute. I'll be there.
Freya, quiet.
So I'm gonna see what he's got.
And if he requests a K9 sniff, I'm going to deploy Freya.
Freya's very good at what she does
because she was trained by some very good people.
Cpl. Reiner was Freya's handler.
He decided to leave for another department.
They opened up the position for a K9 handler.
I interviewed for her and fortunately got her.
Our bond is pretty good, and she's an excellent dog.
I'm doing my best to keep up with that level
of training for her.
There he is.
Okay.
Hello.
Yep.
Hi, Freya.
Come here.
Ready? Check.
Check. Check, check.
Check! Got it.
Good girl. Good girl.
Positive alert. Rear driver door.
Who's a good girl? Who's a good girl?
Go.
Stand in front of his vehicle.
Just so we can kinda keep an eye on everybody.
Dude, she didn't even make it a full circle.
She stopped right at the door.
Oh.
That's a lot of weed, but not much we can do with it.
You didn't pull a gun off of him?
Well, hoo-wee.
Her sniffer is good.
All right.
All right.
Dep. Abney located a small plastic baggie
with some white substances in there.
It's not a whole lot,
but hopefully it's enough to test on a NARTEC.
Did it test hot?
Ooh.
Yeah.
There's a bag of cocaine inside the car, okay?
Yeah.
Okay. Go ahead and turn around,
and place your hands behind your back, okay?
Yeah.
Are they in custody?
Okay.
Damn.
A firearm's just been discovered.
Yeah, if you wanna take one of the females,
and let me take the other one.
So far, you won't admit to it, he won't admit to it,
and nobody else will.
I'm not saying it is.
It didn't magically appear there.
Nobody has, so if nobody does,
you guys are all gonna be arrested for it, okay?
Well, we're gonna skedaddle then.
No problem.
There's my good girl. There's my good girl.
That just goes to show her nose is that powerful.
Even just a trace amount in the vehicle, she'll hit on it.
Growing up down here at Lake of the Ozarks
was kind of a special time, really.
It was a magical, really exciting place to be.
You had go-karts and bumper cars, arcades, Skee-Ball.
You could spend hours down here and hardly spend any money.
For me, it's incredible to think that we're coming up
on the 60th anniversary of Lake Ozark.
It's changed and evolved over the years.
And now, we have a lot more of, like, the nightlife.
If you ever went to a restaurant on the water
at sunset, I mean, it's just a really incredible experience.
But what's really neat is to look ahead and think of
what Lake Ozark might be in another 60 years.
And I really think the best is yet to come,
and it's a story that's yet to be told.
This is kind of the official start, Memorial Day weekend,
to our summer.
And a lot of people are coming to the lake,
so we're gonna be doing some traffic enforcement
to make sure everybody's driving safely down here.
This vehicle just passed us.
It doesn't have any registration on it at all,
so we're gonna come up here to do a traffic stop.
Hello.
You're really shaky.
You okay?
You have your driver's license,
current proof of insurance?
All right, hang tight just a minute.
I'll be right back, okay?
He's obviously nervous.
Whether that's nerves from being stopped
by the police, I don't know yet,
but I'm gonna try to find out.
Another vehicle pulled up ahead of us.
Not quite sure if they know
this individual we have stopped or not.
I don't know. I just now saw them.
If you wanna maybe go figure out what their deal is
and why they're stopping, that'd be great.
You know who that is?
I think that's my coworker,
but other than that, I'm not too sure.
All right, hang tight.
Okay.
All right, I appreciate the distance
you got here.
Just go ahead and leave it that way for me, okay?
- That's completely fair. - All right, thank you.
Okay. All right.
Here's your driver's license and your title for the vehicle.
I appreciate you having the insurance.
So what I'm gonna do is just a verbal warning
for no registration.
Get that taken care of as soon as you can, okay?
A lot of people think that you have a 30-day grace period.
That's not the case.
If you're gonna operate it on a public roadway,
has to be registered.
Before you go, I do wanna ask you a question,
if that's all right with you.
Is there any illegal contraband on you?
You mind if I pat you down real quick?
Okay, if you would, just step out here with me.
All right, will you face that way for me?
All right, cool. I appreciate your cooperation, man.
Do you have any more questions for me?
No, but I will tell you, I'm driving a five-speed
at the moment, and I'm still a little shaky.
So I may stall it out once or twice.
That's fine.
Just as a heads up.
You gotta learn somewhere, man.
- Appreciate it. - All right, good luck to you.
You too.
He seems like a decent kid, and he just got off work.
So I'm just gonna give him a verbal warning
for the registration violation,
and he seems like he's gonna get that taken care of, so.
Well, he did say he's a little bit shaky
with that five-speed.
Come on, kid. Come on.
Stalled it out.
There you go.
It's Memorial Day weekend on the strip.
So tonight's gonna be extremely busy.
Making sure that we have enough officers
to cover the strip is difficult
because we still have the rest
of the city we gotta take care of.
And here's what happens.
705 Miller, traffic stop.
Be in the parking lot next to Ballinger
with a white Ford truck, Illinois plate.
Driver's license, proof of insurance.
Yes, sir.
And what was that all about?
Well, it was like the other person
that came around me, I was just trying to get back
down to the lake.
How much have you had to drink tonight?
Just trying to get back around to the lot cut.
Gotcha. How about my question?
How much did you have to drink tonight?
Beer and a half, maybe?
Okay.
Do you think that's smart driving like that
when there's a whole bunch of people walking,
a whole bunch of cars, and then, you floor it?
The reason why I came out like that is
because you're not supposed to be driving
down the turning lane, that's illegal.
Well, the flooring, it was just
for the atmosphere.
What atmosphere is that?
Just the, you know, the strip.
You know, the exhaust.
Okay, go ahead and step out for me, sir.
Put your cigarette out for me,
if you don't mind.
Okay, come on back here for me.
Okay, turn this way. Turn this way.
There you go. Lean against here, perfect.
I'll be 100% honest with you. I think you're drunk, okay?
I'm absolutely not, but--
Your slurred speech, the way you were driving.
I just did that just 'cause friends
of mine wanted to go up to the strip,
and I just kinda, ugh, just exhaust.
Wet asphalt, I just kinda like, you know,
chirped it a little bit.
Okay. Well, as you're talking to me, I can smell it.
And like you said, you had one and a half drinks,
I think you said?
At maybe 2:30 this afternoon.
All right. Well, in that case,
I'm gonna check your eyes real fast,
make sure you're okay to drive.
Are you good with me checking your eyes?
Guys, I would just rather just part ways now.
Yeah, that's not gonna--
Or just take me to jail.
Okay.
Go ahead and turn around, put your hands behind your back.
Can you get somebody to transport over here?
I know I'm sober,
but I'm not gonna blow in your machine.
All right, this officer's gonna
put you in the back of his car.
Thanks, sir.
I have not searched him yet.
Okay.
They're too intoxicated
per their own admission.
They're gonna arrange for somebody to come get it.
Yep, no problem.
I had to pull Ofc. Khachi off the road
to transport for me.
That is literally 20% of our force tied up
because this guy decided to go drive drunk
to a highly populated area on Memorial Day weekend.
Is somebody coming to pick up the vehicle?
You guys got the keys and all?
All right, make sure you guys don't drive it, okay?
Fair warning? All right.
All right, take care.
So it is Memorial Day weekend.
We'll have a huge influx of people visiting.
Yikes.
I'm no longer on days.
I'm on nights.
I am Sergeant Morley's night shift corporal.
But we're short-staffed this weekend
because we have a sergeant that's out.
So we are making do with what we have.
Thankfully, I think we have a good crew.
I might be biased, though.
19-211, I'm on my way to you.
Officer Wright has a suspended driver,
so we are gonna go up here and back him up.
It's gonna be on 23.
Well, she had crossed the center line once
and I was like, "Oh, I'm gonna double check that."
And then, she just completely started like, went over,
and then turned her turn signal on.
I was like, I'm just gonna stop her for it.
Can you go ahead and step out for me?
Do you have insurance on you?
Okay. Okay.
There, I got that. There you go.
It's pretty nifty they do that.
Okay.
Hand it back to you, if you wanna...
Well, that's the thing.
You are still suspended.
So I cannot let you drive.
Okay? You're gonna have to come with me.
[bleep].
You have anything in the car that you need?
Purse, phone?
If you wanna grab it, gather your things.
You want this window rolled up?
You wanna take it with you or?
You can have it whenever you're released.
All right.
Yep, and we'll take care of that.
Just step over to the front of the car over here.
I'm just gonna pat you down for any weapons.
Or anything like that.
We're gonna go through the purse.
Just make sure you don't have any--
Just over here.
Just put your hands up here for me.
And then, spread your feet apart for me.
Outside of just cigarettes, vape,
and personal items, there's nothing in this purse
that's gonna harm me or anything?
- No. - Okay.
I'll just forewarn you, you're gonna be right
in the front seat with me.
It's because I do have a fur partner in the back,
so I don't have a backseat.
What is this for?
That's an awfully big lighter
to light a cigarette.
Happy birthday.
Does it?
Do any of us, really?
So Ofc. Wright will transport this female
to our jail for booking.
Just kinda watch your feet.
Provided that she doesn't have a history of driving
while suspended, then she'll be cited.
She'll have a future court date,
and then she'll be released.
But we're also gonna have to tow the car.
That way, she doesn't come back and try to drive the car again
on a suspended driving status.
Here you go. Philly cheese steak tater tots.
Okay. - I appreciate it.
Yeah. No problem.
- Whoo hoo! - Memorial Day weekend, baby!
Whoo!
Yeah, baby!
Sgt. Kordula and I made a traffic stop a little while ago.
Turned out being a DWI arrest.
So that takes officers out of play.
And this is the first major weekend of the year,
so we really have to be strategic about
how we place our officers.
Whoo-hoo!
Where's your ID?
- What ID? - Your ID.
I don't have my ID.
Okay. Come over here with me.
Come on. Over here. - Over where?
Over where? - Over here. Over here.
He's got it right in his pocket.
He's got it in his pocket.
I know, he's trying to hide it.
- Magic trick. - No open containers.
Where's your ID? - Voila.
I don't have an ID.
How do you have beer?
I walked up there, and I got a beer.
And they didn't card you?
No.
They've been carding everybody
at the door to even get in.
I promise.
So what kind of ID
or form of identification do you have?
You know your social security number?
Why are you walking around out here
with a beer if you're only 19 years old?
I don't know.
Is that a wallet in your left pocket?
What's that?
So you're out here with tobacco product,
a beer, and a joint, at 19, with no ID.
Where's your phone?
Do you need my phone?
What's on the back of your phone?
No, but do you need my phone?
No. Is your ID on the back of it?
No.
All right, we need some way to ID you right now
because we're gonna write you a ticket.
Do you know your name, your date of birth,
your social security number?
I know my name and my date of birth.
Are you from Missouri?
Yes.
All right, we can start there.
Okay.
- What's your first name? - [bleep].
Okay. You want him trespassed?
Straight over here.
Straight over here.
Whoa, stop. Stop!
Man, you're making this worse than it needs to be.
You wanna go home or do you wanna stay here?
Put him in timeout for a minute.
Let him calm down
and see if we can't find him a ride out of here.
Gonna go around the front.
This is ridiculous, man. Stop.
Stop, man. This is ridiculous.
Stop!
I don't care. - Ready?
All right. Listen to me real quick, okay?
You're going in this car, okay?
I wanna put you in this car nice and peaceful-like, okay?
All right, sit in here.
Where's your ID at, man?
What's your first name?
Guess?
Officer Vela is going to transport him up to the PD
where he will attempt to do a fast ID where
if he's ever been fingerprinted anywhere
in the United States, his name and information will populate.
From there, he will be placed on a 12-hour hold
pending charges for disturbing the peace.
I'm John Roker, KRMS Radio News.
Recent heavy rains and the holiday weekend are combining
to make the Lake area a busy place,
both on and off the water.
The monsoon's back.
Hey.
It's the time of year
where the weather goes from nice, warm, humid,
to instant monsoon.
But hopefully, this will end soon
'cause I don't like getting out
and getting absolutely dumped on.
It's down the road here,
so we'll re-secure the building with the business.
You don't know if you're gonna encounter any looters
or just a messed up alarm,
but we do have a key holder en route,
and they're usually pretty quick on their response.
9-11, will be 23.
9-11, 9-09. Open door.
O.B., what was the ETA on that key holder?
Did they provide one?
10-4.
9-11, we'll be making entry.
Ready?
On you.
Okay. We got multiple aisles so.
All right, let's go.
Clear.
Clear.
These are clear. I got bathrooms up ahead.
Hold, I'm gonna check this bathroom.
Yep.
- Open door. - Yep.
Hello?
Hello.
Yep.
Side door over here.
You the manager or key holder?
Okay.
9-11 OB, key holder on scene.
Yeah.
Yeah, usually whenever we come out here
for alarms, everything's all secure,
and then I could pop open that door.
I was like, "Oh, that's a first."
- Thank you. - Yeah, thank you.
Building's been re-secured. All units 10-8.
Well, luckily, we didn't discover anybody, especially
since we went in guns drawn 'cause we never know
what kinda situation it's gonna incur.
So best-case scenario, nobody was in there.
It was just because an employee closed up
and just didn't close up all the way.
But gonna have to spend the rest of my shift drying off.
It's always an adventure.
Let's go!
That's how we do it. That's how we do it.
Hang on, they're gonna bring me some IDs.
Oh, shoot.
15 tonight? That's what I'm talking about.
This is a stack full of fake IDs.
Every single one of these are fake.
It's two nights in a row they've come up
to me, handed me a stack almost the same size.
And that's really what it--
Fight at Lucy's.
- MIP? - I'm sorry.
ID, both of you.
And these are your real IDs?
Do you have your real one with you?
Will you get rid of those for me real quick?
What's your last name?
[bleep].
How old are you guys? How old are you?
19?
Here's your ticket.
You got possession of fake ID and minor in possession.
You got the same thing, has a mandatory court date. Hang on.
- Mandatory court date? - Mandatory court date.
All your information's up here, okay?
Here's one for you.
You got possession of false identification, fake ID, okay?
- Okay. - All right,
if you guys are caught back down here, you will be arrested.
Do you understand?
You guys can't be in these bars.
If I catch you in any of the bars,
you will be arrested, okay?
All right, have a good night, guys.
I'll give some advice.
Fake IDs don't work for [bleep].
Give it up. Just go go home and be good kids.
Hands up. Be good kids.
We made it through Memorial Day weekend,
and I think things went pretty well.
But there are a few adjustments we're gonna look at
just to help things go a little safer
for the folks coming down to have a good time.
Because if you think you're gonna come to the strip
with a fake ID or get rowdy and start fighting
with folks around here, we're gonna write you a ticket
or prosecute you and make sure we send a message this year.
But I have no doubt
that this is gonna be really a summer to remember.
Look at it. Just look at it.
There it is.
All right, man.
I gotta be up for church in about four hours.
