Oop.
Right now?
Right now?
Have a good time.
Yeah, I know.
Hold on.
You're gonna stay there?
Come on, Isaac.
You should watch your folks here.
Fucking around.
Let me tie this bastard.
I don't know if I'll tie Isaac.
You don't mind, do you?
It's not Isaac's fault.
You ready to roll?
I think so.
Crap, what did I do with my phone?
There's a cow of ours.
That's a smaller calf, but look at the cow.
So what all has to be done on your pickup?
My dad just hasn't started on the same thing.
And the trailer's good to go? Oh yeah, the trailer's good to go.
Look high on the hog.
Wanna see what we're up against?
Yeah.
This is awesome!
And a chair.
Oh, man.
This is a cute little chair.
We have water.
We have slippers.
Those are hot results.
I think we can.
Oh,
we have a poker set.
That's going to be fun.
Oh, we got food in here. That's what it looks like.
We got bagels with butter.
I'm hungry. I won't lie.
Oh, I'm excited, Holland. I'm so excited.
Like, we're like, we're riding high.
Holland, it don't have a toilet.
It doesn't have a toilet.
Oh, they are replacing it.
Oh, they're replacing it? Yeah.
Oh, that's why that's there.
When are they going to replace it? They're working on it.
Two years of living in a camper, fixing cows around.
I'm happy that this year we have a nice cabin.
Nice step up.
It's like I'm moving up in the mountains.
You know, what's next?
The options are truly endless.
Camper, cabin, maybe next a mansion. We don't know.
Arlene gave this to me.
This is like more luxury than I grew up.
Did you snort? I did. Hey, can you grab one and we'll shake it out outside?
Maybe we should air it out outside.
I would air it out.
What's that?
Is that birth poop?
We don't have time to take more time than today. No.
We need a wife.
We need wives.
Neither one of us make good wives, so we need to buy some.
I don't want those.
Order one online.
It's happening.
This is living the life.
Lucy!
When we were little, my brother and I had bunk beds.
Yeah. And I didn't find out until later that he had naked girls on the top of
his bunk beds.
He was a teenager.
Oh, man, that sucks.
We need candles.
Yeah, we do. Like, smelly candles. There's candles right there, but...
Look how cute she is right now. Look how cute she is. Look how
cute
she is.
She is adorable.
Oh my gosh.
She's like a little panda bear.
Rudy too, you're just as cute.
You're just as cute.
A savage beast.
It's going to be.
This is going to be awesome.
So it looks like there's still a lot of cows to push on over.
Yeah.
So, okay, let's shoot some options by each other. I don't see a heck of a lot
of cattle here to come over that high trail.
I see a few, but not a heck of a lot.
That's that road that we need to go up, right?
Yeah, so we'll go over... So different. Like my first perspective when I came
here and stuff like that.
We could just kind of feet bop around that hillside.
Kind of pick up like that scattered stuff.
Okay. And then come around and drop down.
I like it.
Because it looks like we got some cattle.
You kind of see. Look above that drift fence. See them cattle right there? Oh,
yep. I think we need to kick those down.
We can kind of split up when we come around and do our thing.
Horses are already tired.
Well, you know, it's the first leg up, you know.
They'll get their other wins.
Yeah, I see there's cattle up on that ridge too.
Yeah, I think that's a good plan.
I like it.
You know, it's always good when you like the plan to start with.
Yeah, hopefully the cows like it.
I was born ready. Also premature.
in these trees so bad.
I'm hoping they're ahead of us.
Thank you.
How's your horse?
What?
How's your horse?
How is it?
Dead?
Isaac got hot.
I never thought in a million years they'd do what they did.
Did they circle back?
Holy cow, they went all the way back.
Oh, shit.
There's two more coming up that road.
Do you need to cool your horse down? Yeah.
I got treed. I got treed big time.
Like, you know, going after these cows in that dark, dark timber.
And, like, everything's low.
So I just, like, leaned down on my horse, you know, like that. And brushes
were hitting me and everywhere. And I thought I was out. I look up.
Freaking literally, I got a fat lip. Like, I went backwards in my saddle.
Like, I thought it was going to fall off.
You didn't? I don't know how bad it is, but it sure hurts.
Do you want to just have lunch?
We can do that.
Tom, where's your bread?
There should have been two things of tin.
Dirt. A little dirt didn't kill no one.
It's supposed to be two pieces of bread.
Oh yeah, choose which one I didn't want.
Daily style.
This one's hickory smoke.
Thank you very much. Look at this.
Stop it.
Oy.
I know it's my semen.
I'm going to flatten it out a little bit.
Not that my chinks are the most hygienic. A little dirt, a little hair.
That poor horse.
You know, like, he's not the toughest.
But he goes where I point him.
We went through some sketchy stuff.
I'm liking him. I'm glad you got him.
His problems aren't that big of a deal.
Some people just don't get along with certain horses, so... Stop it.
How's your sandwich?
I had the smoked salmon. What did you get? Just the tuna?
Mm-hmm.
Did you have some peaches?
I think these are the cutest little jars, cans, whatever they are.
A lot
of
these poor dogs, they go so many miles, their pads wear out just like, you know,
our feet would wear out if you're going a million miles a day.
Yep. Oh, there's one there too.
It's oozing.
I have some peroxide. Do you want to throw it on it?
It'll help open it up so it doesn't cut out. I like the natural way.
Okay. Go ahead. I like the natural ways.
I agree with that.
Look at that.
That's mine.
I cut that.
What? I didn't even see it. It came right off.
Are you
overworked and underpaid?
Is that what you're telling me?
Yes, I know. That's true. We all are.
Our dogs aren't pets, except for, like, we have our few, but they've earned it.
Her and her mom worked phenomenally together.
Like, they just balanced each other. Like, they were meant to work together.
It was just crazy.
The month after she died, she wouldn't come in the house. I couldn't.
I'd call her, and she'd come to the deck, and then she'd run off.
She'd go disappear.
Last week I had her, she just, she was curled up on the floor just flying and I
was just trying to talk to her and I couldn't even talk to her because she'd
wag her tail and that would make her cry.
And so I would just sit there next to her and talk to her, just try and not
make her wag her tail. And she just, they were able to give her some pain
meds that like numbed everything.
So as she was getting put down.
I could hold her and talk to her.
And she was so weak and feeble at that point, like, it took seconds.
Like, the drugs hit her and she was gone.
And I cried a lot. A lot.
And I won't have a dog like her again.
She was special.
But that's why I have her daughter.
Right?
They were able to put her ashes in a tin, which sounds really ridiculous for
a dog, but I got her cremated and, yeah, so she's,
yeah, I have her in a little flower tin.
I thought about, like, burying her and, like, where do I bury her? She's,
there's no home. Like, you've never been home anywhere.
We've always had these riding jobs where you move places.
It's not her home.
So.
I don't know. My biggest deal is, for me, myself, is, you know, I love this
work. I love this lifestyle.
I do believe, you know, I have skill sets for it, but the thing is I don't
want to be working for just a house my whole life and just making the bills,
you know. I'd like to find something where I can do my own thing or at least
say that I have some cows, you know, or just trying to figure out how to make
that work.
It's just finding the right opportunity and working with people who want to see
that for you.
So that's not always an easy thing to do.
Or, you know, maybe I'll just be so good at it, I'll become a millionaire.
Goodbye, Moulin Rouge.
makes it tough.
Uh-oh. Come on.
This is going to be dangerous.
Oh, it's the other one.
Did you light it again?
The other one.
I have the neatest trick.
That one. I put the lighter or the latch in it, and then I do it.
Yeah, I should do that.
Well, I just invented it. It's a new thing.
It's a new thing.
I want an egg. Will you eat an egg if I make you an egg?
If you make an egg, you really want corned beef hash.
And an egg.
I don't know what to do with your corned beef hash. You just heat it up.
Okay,
I'll do it.
Nasty.
I ain't gonna eat this stuff.
You never even had it. You don't even know what it tastes like. It tastes like
dog food. I love it. It's gross.
It's delightful.
It's nasty.
I'd eat it every day if I could.
What's more rugged than corned beef hash? There's nothing.
There really isn't. No. No, except the bagels. I'm surprised you don't have
hair on your chest.
I do.
So this morning, you kicked those stuff off the fence right away?
Or do you want to look at Elijah's stuff?
Let's kick our stuff off the fence right away.
I agree. Well, I mean...
It's probably gonna be a big bunch.
I'm assuming.
If it's just, like, a few, then we can go straight to Elijah's, and then we can
pick that stuff up when we trail the other stuff over.
But I'm assuming it's gonna be a lot.
We should take those little kiddie fishing poles and go fishing.
We should.
We should.
We should find someone that's fly fishing with, like, all their fancy gear
and take those and fish right next to us.
We'd have to, like, go catch a fish, though.
So we had one ready and just, like, I snuck off in the bushes and just tied
one onto your... It can't be one. It has to be, like, one after
the other or something.
I said just a little bit
It's like having 12 kids.
Yeah, my dad, he wants me to come home.
Well, he's got to offer you something.
That's what I said. I said, you know, I wouldn't mind coming out and being a
part of the family deal.
But you're not going to fight for it? Yeah, I said, I'm not going to.
He says, I'd have to have my own place with my own cows, like own lease ground.
Because my brother's there, and he's kind of territorial.
And that's why you're not there.
It is.
I said, you know, I mean, it's got to be Jake's deal.
You know, I don't have an issue with him. You know, it's whatever he has.
You know, there's things he can do I can't do, and I'm really proud of him
for it. But the things that I can do that he can't, he needs to get over
that. Oh, you know, it's...
If you just figured out that, you know, you guys working together could be a
good thing.
Beneficial.
It's only a God thing that this is real.
I would get to do this.
Yeah.
Like just the past six years, you know, just getting to this point. There's some
right there. You know where?
They must have a trail somewhere.
You know where?
We can work together.
Has it been six years?
I think so.
Five, at least five.
Since we met?
Maybe it's only been five.
I don't know.
I don't know. Facebook tells me all the time, but and if I can remember.
Get back!
Get a hat!
Get a hat!
Damn it, Max!
Get a fucking hat!
Hurty language, Coley.
They're just sticky buggers. They're so bad today.
I chased so many in and out, in and out, in and out. Them mother... Them God's
creatures.
Those sweet...
Creatures would not come out.
Good dogs.
Where's Elijah?
There's that man.
on this horse.
Oh you got him sweetie.
Fucking kidding me.
bring a beer in that saddlebags of yours?
That would be great.
I'm just thankful somebody else is here to go through that shenaniganship show
with me.
It's usually just me by myself.
I mean, it's hard. It's really hard.
I mean, unfortunately, there's a lot of farming at home and whatnot like that.
There's at least two different people that file bankruptcy out there.
So I think two or three this year, stuff getting repoed.
But, I mean, the farm equipment, I mean, a combine costs half a million dollars.
You know, and for that to pay off, you can't, you know, that won't pay for
itself with $2, $3 wheat, you know.
So, yeah, the equipment nowadays isn't made for the small guy. It's made for
big corporations.
You can't find, if you want to operate and you're not a big guy, you've got to
buy used stuff, you know.
Everyone wants new, and the bank will give you money for new because the
interest is great for them.
I'll let you buy new stuff all day long, but the best way is to own everything.
Yeah. As long as you own everything, you don't mind starving a little bit.
I mean, you'll make it, you know, but it's
just hard.
I love nothing.
I'll cook the steaks on my ass.
Mom would always, we'd always have campfires and make dinners on fire.
But it's been a while since I've made a dinner on a fire.
So we'll see how it goes.
She died of an aneurysm, brain aneurysm.
She had been having migraines and whatnot like that for
the past two, three years. They were getting really bad.
But, you know, my mom was, you know, we didn't have much money or much insurance
or anything like that. You know, just tough it out, you know.
And she did, and she was a tough woman.
She was a tough woman.
Anyways.
She was riding my colt.
She had her aneurysm on there.
She was on life support for about three days.
She wasn't there.
And I wish she never would have, because I did surgery on her, and I wish she
never would have. I just would have let her pass.
But the good thing that did come out of those three days is that I got to
memorize her hands.
And my mom was always self-conscious about her hands, you know, because she
worked so dang hard. They were always calloused and similar to mine.
And, you know, sunburnt and just, you know, she was a working woman.
So she'd always do dishes to, like, soften up her hands and stuff like that.
But they were so feminine. They were long and her fingernails were beautiful.
And I was able to hold her hand for those three days.
And memories, and today I can still feel them.
And we had a wagon and brought her down to
the ranch after the funeral and put her on the wagon.
And we got to take one last ride home, please.
And we had her horse tied behind the wagon, like you're supposed to.
We buried her up there, and she'll always be a part of the place, you know.
So she brought that place together, you know. It was in ruins when she married
Dad, and her and Dad built it back up and passed it on to this next
generation.
She's just, just, just, just like what, just,
she's a hell of a woman.
It's just.
You don't meet those people. I don't know. I just feel closer to her now,
more now than I have
since she's passed.
What's that mountain called up there again?
Is it like Black Mountain? Oh, the Big Black Dome.
Well, the dogs did good.
Sort of. Mine worn out towards the end.
You know, animals and nature are seasonal.
You know, I think us as people are too.
I think every range rider, though, you spend your time in an area and you're
definitely ready to move on and see new country, even though you've probably
already seen it.
You're like, ah, I missed you.
She's so smart.
I mean, like, I've always loved starting cults.
Yeah. But I'm just starting to love other things.
As I've grown.
To know God, you know, and everything else like that, I know stepping into a
round pen, I've learned more about myself.
And, you know, God's taught me more about myself working a horse than I've
ever taught a horse.
She just noticed the saddle there.
What's that old movie actress that's blonde?
Marilyn? Yeah, I think I'm gonna call her Marilyn.
Shouldn't have called her Marilyn, now she's getting an attitude.
halter don't quite fit her but you want me to go get you a different one i think
we'll be okay you
could start with your sweater too the
what you could start with your sweater your arm gets tired this is a heavy
blanket
That took forever.
But she's gonna be tough.
She's gonna give you heart, that's for sure.
Once you get her.
She's gonna buck.
Yeah.
You want me down there, helping with that saddle?
I'm right here in a minute.
Bite me, you're getting smacked.
There's a blanket!
There you go.
There you are, girl.
You got your rig set?
Yeah, as small as it'll go.
I don't think about hobbling her.
It's not gonna get tied down here in a second.
There. There.
There.
Got this right here.
There you go.
Jesus! What's her deal in this side of the room?
I'm exhausted.
Mentally, physically, metaphysically. Looks like you know what you're doing.
Let's not do that.
That's bad.
Nothing.
Why would I do that?
Just to let her have a fit, so if she'll... I'm not going to teach her to
buck if she doesn't buck.
Not what that does.
Until they buck, it's still an option.
If I can get them to buck once, and then they realize nothing changes, and that
doesn't accomplish anything, they don't go to that again. Sometime.
I'll stop talking then.
It's your fault. You're fine, dude.
That's just my... You want to do a little bit of room?
Well, hurry up. Get with it, cowboy.
Wait. No,
I thought you were a flanker.
I'm not a flanker, but I'm something.
So go ahead and take the halter off.
He don't like you. He don't like me.
Hey now, don't pull the saddle off.
Heck,
I could sit that.
What in the world?
I'm getting old. This is ridiculous.
Jack, get out.
Get a little bit more aggressive, sweetie.
It's officially broke.
She's broke.
I know.
She's broke.
Thank you, Collie.
Oh, yeah. I mean, Elijah's got to keep, you know, doing something like this.
Whether that means going with them or... But
we'll do what we need to to get by, but I'd rather, you know, having a baby in a
camper could suck.
But I guess if we have to, we have to.
Wouldn't be the first time I lived in a camper, but, you know, with a baby for
sure.
I can live with barely anything, you know, and I don't need that much stuff,
but I've only lived, you know, for myself in a way. So, you know, having
somebody else, a baby to live for and take care of, like, you can't live like
I live.
You look good on her.
You look good on him.
We're a matched pair.
It's hard to look as good as us, you know.
We make small horses look good, eh?
Someone's got to.
Can't let the kids do it all the time. I know I've been riding him lately, and,
you know, I'm used to tall horses.
Never noticed, like...
You know, what it meant, like what you meant earlier. See?
How many pants you gone through this summer? Less!
You don't rip your pants as much.
I'm just trying to keep up with the Kardashians, Holland. I know.
You know, style's everything.
Gosh, those cows aren't ran us.
I hate willows and the marsh and having to ride on them, you know?
But, uh, they're sure dang pretty this time of year. They are. And we kind of
missed the prettiest part.
Yeah. I don't, this is, I think it's pretty cool.
Did it get dark? Is it getting dark?
Yeah.
That storm's coming in.
I shouldn't have.
Like, everything's really tight.
Are you warm enough?
I need to zip that one too.
Do you want my big coat?
I have my coat.
Thank you for dressing me.
I'm gonna look like marshmallows.
I love this coat.
You look great.
Are you gonna be warm?
I don't know, I might have to change coats.
I wonder if I should pee now or later.
Oh man, that'll feel good.
I can't
even
see the cows.
Heck, we might not be able to do that.
Find them cows, Rudy, too.
And run!
That's like where I think we'll find the cows there. But I mean like heck we got
about, let's see what we got in.
387 right now that we've got off the mountain that I've counted in and we've
gotten probably 30 calves from weaning to now, from after
weaning to now.
So I mean
I don't think, heck, we got 600 more to come off the mountain.
They gotta have enough calves in those bunches to finish our contract.
And I think all the ones that we've pulled off have been big, nice, not
dinkish.
Thank you.
What is that?
Jack, leave her be.
What is that crippled creature?
Oh no.
Poor gal.
She's gonna die back here.
actually to be honest i don't think i i don't remember the last time i saw a cow
with its eyes sunk in like that it was walking
poor
god we could just get her over we're almost there we just get over the top
she'd have a chance yeah
Looks to me that she probably lost her calf inside of her and that she got an
infection from it.
Yeah, I can't believe the wolves haven't got her.
So we gotta get these cows.
Yeah.
Kind of feel bad for the poor gal.
Almost there.
Almost to the top.
You're like the top. You didn't go down.
Yeah, the other cows went that way, in the rock grit.
I think we're cornering this one.
Yeah, this isn't four corners, but they're going down.
Oh, there's Mount Bora.
Beautiful. Oh, God.
Look at that.
Let's get off the frozen tundra.
Back on Uber.
Good job, team.
Good job. We all made it.
Lives well.
Well, I don't know about that cow.
Not alive and well, but very alive.
Yeah.
You know, and I was kind of a long, stressful day.
I'm glad we got it done.
Oh, God.
Look at that.
Me and you are fishing in the dark.
that song.
Get out!
I guess open that and we'll shove these or count these out and then I'll put
these here.
I don't want to move.
I just want to stay up here.
Oh, it's dusty.
I'm upset that we're leaving.
I don't want to. If I could stay up here year-round, I would.
All righty.
Ready to sweep.
I'm just going to try and get this rug somewhat... It's hard living where you
can't vacuum.
It drives me crazy.
I'm so sorry.
So sorry.
It's a heavy sound.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's mainly this.
I'm the one that smokes.
Bad habit.
I don't like the filters, so I rip them off and then I put them in my pocket.
They're only there to protect you, but let's rip them off.
Must be Elijah's big.
He bought the test, so.
Yeah, he was right there when I found out.
I didn't say anything. I just came out of the bathroom, and I was staring at
it, and he's like, well, what?
And he's like, what? I said, well, you go look for yourself. Maybe I'm reading
it wrong.
I wasn't.
You know,
I mean, I'd like to see a different country. You know, I always will, but,
you know.
And I don't, you know, the other thing, too, is, you know, I don't want to
bounce around, you know, every six months to a different job.
You know, that's...
It doesn't always look, it doesn't look good.
I don't want to do that. You know, at least if you could stick it through a
year, three and a half a year.
But I gotta go. I believe God wants me to do.
We'll see how it all plays out though in the end. I mean, I don't know.
So, but, you know, I just, it's hard trying to figure out life. Life's a
bugger, figuring out what you're going to do.
where you want to be and what's the future in it.
You do what you gotta do, but, I mean, come look at this bathroom, by the way.
Holy crap.
Did that.
Bare hands.
That's wonderful. Bare hands.
Both of them.
You're gonna make a phenomenal house, Wade.
You shouldn't have moved your head.
Phenomenal.
be able to say that, like, I cowboyed for, like, tell my children, like, what
I did.
You're so beautiful.
So beautiful.
You guys are good boys too.
I think we're all gonna be sad to leave here.
Go away.
Justice!
He's here.
Come here.
Hey.
Come on.
Alright.
Can you get in?
I don't know.
Come on, you turd.
What are you gonna do about it?
I'm gonna teach your child how to talk and know a woman accent. But you're not
gonna even be around my child. I'm not gonna let that happen. Well, it only
takes a half a day to teach him something.
Give him a big old taco hat.
You're not even close to my child. I will not allow it.
I have the answer, you're right.
No, you don't.
I'll make a point of it because it's gonna be sad.
Don't count on it.
Then I'll just send out a whole bunch of noisy toys.
You have no warranty rights.
Oh yes I do.
I can't see where my trailer's at.
Good, we got plenty of room.
Plenty? Yeah, like four feet.
That's how I roll.
She's knocking him around.
I think she is.
Yep.
Alright, that sounds good.
Is there a cast in there?
She is.
There you go, kid.
She's trying to take him away from the rest of the cows, but he needs to suck.
Maybe we'll get out of here and calm him down a little bit.
Hey, you answered.
Yeah,
no, it's going pretty good.
I don't know. I talked to the owner and whatnot like that the other day, and
he's going to stop, I think, going to stop night cabin like the 15th and kind
of visited with him. And, like, he has plenty of work to do and stuff like
that. But he asked me what I wanted to do, and, you know.
I think he has the opportunity, you know, working for this operation and
whatnot like that, but I'm not sure if it's necessarily really where I want to
be right now. But he guaranteed me a job at least through April.
Yeah.
Well,
it's strange because, like, I just... I'm just at a lot of peace about it
still, you know? Like, don't know where I'm going or what's going to come up,
but, like, I just know that God's going to provide, and I just have this, I'm
not worried.
Like, abnormally not worried.
So it's kind of a neat feeling, you know? I'm ready for summer big time. I
mean, this winter can just go to hell.
I'm just tired of winter.
I just want it.
Is it, are you two weeks out or three weeks out? Two weeks out?
Well, I'm like 38 weeks as of like tomorrow.
And it can really happen any time.
Okay.
Are you okay?
Yeah, I just, he got really sick.
And so I got, I didn't know what it was. I thought it was part of the pregnancy.
Because I've never been pregnant before. So I just, I got the
most intense sickness I've ever had.
And they couldn't figure out what was really going on. I just kind of decided
I got sick with something.
But some of the symptoms were similar to going into labor
early. So, yeah. But she's at the stage where she wouldn't have to be on a
ventilator or nothing, right?
No, yeah, she's full term now. Okay.
Just fine.
Okay.
So, it's good.
Like, I'd love to have her right now.
Okay.
All right.
I love you dearly, and I love Flossie, and I love Elijah, and tell your mom I
say hi, and I'm super happy that she's there. All right. Okay.
I love you.
I love you too, Holland.
Okay. All right.
It's kind of hard to get in trouble when you're on the night shift.
