[enchanting music playing]

[train horn blowing in the distance]

[vehicle approaching]

- [brakes squeaking] - [dog 1] When I saw this happening,

- I thought it was very bad. - [dog 2 yelping]

But like most things that happen at Merry Christmastime…

- [whining] - …it turned out to be very good.

I didn't know it at the time, but that little abandoned girl puppy

- would eventually become the best thing… - [whining]

…that ever happened to my pack.

But I guess I'm getting ahead of myself.

So let's start at the very beginning.

[birds chirping]

[festive, romantic music playing]

- [man] Perfect Christmas. - [woman] So cute.

[dog] It was Merry Christmastime when I first met my pack.

[whimpering]

- [woman 1] Ooh. - [dog sniffing]

[woman 1 chuckling]

[indistinct chatter]

[dog barking, whining]

- [man] Great. Yeah. - [woman 1] Sander.

This last one is from me and Hunter to you and Barbara.

- [dog barking, sniffing] - [woman 2 gasps, chuckles]

- [dog] It was love at first sniff. - [both gasping]

- [dog whining] - [indistinct chatter continues]

Who are you?

- [dog] I learned he was my dad. - [Hunter] Merry Christmas, Mom.

- Yes. - [woman 1 laughing]

[dog whining]

- [Hunter] Merry Christmas, Dad! - [dog] And she was Ello, my girl.

[woman 1] Merry Christmas.

[dog] "Merry Christmas" was the first word I ever understood.

It means people are happy.

And it's my favorite word.

My mom and dad loved Merry Christmastime.

- [Sander laughing] - He called her Barbara.

She was his mate.

- People need mates. - Whoo-hoo!

There was a time when I thought I needed one.

But now, not so much.

At Merry Christmastime,

my whole pack would get together, and they were just happier…

Merry Christmas, everybody!

…than they were at any other time of the year.

[blows raspberry]

- [dog whimpering] - [Barbara laughing]

- The next Merry Christmastime… - [babies crying]

…the babies arrived.

- [woman] I did this. - [Hunter] Here's your brothers, Ello.

Winstead, wanna say hi?

- [Winstead] I couldn't stop kissing them… - [baby crying]

…and I didn't know why.

[romantic music continues]

[owl hooting]

[music fades]

- There were more Merry Christmastimes. - [quirky music playing]

And as I got bigger, so did everybody else in our pack.

I used to be able to sleep through the night

without going outside for a leg lift.

But those days are gone.

- Dad has the same issue. - [toilet flushing]

[quirky music continues]

The night is when I do my best hunting.

Mm, garbage juice.

I always check on my pack.

The babies got way bigger. Night is the only time they're quiet.

But I love the babies.

They always remember to feed the dog on the floor.

- [gasps] - [twins laughing]

Okay, yeah. That's better.

My girl, Ello, doesn't play with me much anymore.

She's either sad or yelling or crying.

The only time she's really happy

is when she's out there sliding around on the ice.

It's who she truly is.

Oh, tonight she left me a treat.

- The tired ones. - [snoring lightly]

I worry something big is happening between them.

- It's snowing. It's snowing. - [screaming]

[Winstead] Though when they fight, they seem to enjoy it.

[both laughing]

Some people call them Hunter and Juliana.

So I think of them as Hunter Dad and Juliana Mom.

[mellow music playing]

[panting]

This is where we sleep.

Dad is very sad, and I know why.

It's been two Merry Christmastimes since Mom got sick and went away.

- [birds chirping] - [music fades]

- [Winstead snuffling] - [bird twittering]

[snorting]

I first noticed that bird the day Mom left us.

It's like the bird is watching over us.

[humming] Okay.

- [Ello sighs] - [Winstead panting]

Oh, oh. Okay. All right.

- Okay. That's… All right. Yep. - [barks]

Nope. Ow!

Not a word of this to anyone, Ello. I'm issuing a gag order. Down, Winstead.

[Ello] Not that Grandpa even cares.

Um, can you take this up to your grandfather?

God, who died and made me a waitress?

Um, your grandmother, that's who.

[Ello] Why does he have to live here? It's not even fair.

[Winstead groans] They always make me work for it.

[Juliana] He spent all of his money on medical treatments,

and now he was forced to move in here, but he's family, so…

Deal with it, missy.

I just don't like him.

I mean, he's against everything that I stand for.

[scoffs] Oh, really?

- [whines] - In this house, we respect our elders.

- Period. - [Winstead whimpering]

Oh, that actually includes me. [chuckles]

[Winstead] Why is the food always up there?

[Winstead whimpers]

[barks]

I love you!

[Ello] Whatever.

[footsteps approaching]

Oh God. [sighs]

- [gasps] - [shrieks] Oh my God. Oh my God.

I thought you were dead.

[Ello groans]

So you give me a heart attack?

Yeah, well, Mom told me that I needed to respect you.

So here's your eggs and toast.

I know a dog who deserves some toast. [whimpering]

I don't want it.

Okay, boomer.

- [sighs heavily] - [twins squealing]

[Winstead barking]

Which one's that?

That one's Ewan.

Ewan, you either stop or finish the job.

I look forward to the day when I can eat eggs without screaming in the background.

Well, at least you get to escape to your office.

For me, the screaming never stops.

- Yeah. - Don't forget, we have lunch today.

Mrs. Espinoza's taking the twins.

No, today I have that meeting with my new boss, Nina O'Brien.

- I told you about this. - And I told you we need to talk.

It's really important.

So be there,

or I'm showing up at your office with the twins.

[Juliana chuckles]

- Okay. - Ello.

We got some very exciting news

about you on the parent portal this morning.

- [Winstead] Chewy. Mm-hmm. - Your essay on ice dancing won this…

- Mine. Ello, mine. Mine. - [Ello] Winstead. Give it back. Come on.

[laughs] It says here,

"Eloise Goss…" That's you.

"…will receive a $2,000 college grant…"

- Two thousand dollars. That's great. - A lot of money.

"…and will be hosted in evening wear

on the mayor's float in the Christmas parade."

They're gonna announce it at the assembly today.

- Yay! [laughs] - Oh, look at that.

Congratulations, honey.

- That's great. Wonderful. - So cool.

No. No, I resign.

- You can't resign from a scholarship. - Uh, no, I don't think you understand.

If I do that, Brittne's gonna hate me, and then all my friends are gonna hate me.

- [Hunter] Because of the scholarship? - [Ello] No.

Brittne's gonna hate me because of the outfit.

Honey, I think we just need to calm down and think about this.

You know what? This is the worst day of my life, okay?

Wow. Okay. All right.

[Ewan squealing in the background]

[sighs heavily]

- [Ewan] No! - [Juliana] No. Not today, guys.

I've got a massive headache.

[Winstead] When she's alone with the babies, she struggles.

I wish I could help.

[moaning]

When everybody leaves, he gets so sad.

[Sander chewing]

- Something's different about him today. - [melancholy music playing]

And it's not good.

[whining softly]

- [Sander sighs] - [Winstead moaning softly]

Don't look at me like that.

[Winstead whines] Let's go for a walk.

Walks fix everything.

[Sander sighs deeply]

[panting]

- Okay. - [Winstead whining]

[glass clinks]

[Sander] We'll go for a walk first. [sighs]

[music fades]

[festive music playing]

[Sander] They start Christmas earlier every year, Winstead.

- Barbara loved it. No idea why. - [chatter in the background]

[woman 1] Who's that?

- What? - There.

[woman 2] He looks homeless.

- [scoffs] In a cashmere coat? [laughs] - Um, what a beautiful dog.

See how his nose is down? He's tracking.

Mm. Oh, you and your dogs.

[both laughing]

- [Winstead] Oh, got a scent. On it. - Hey! Winstead!

- Uh-uh. Oh-oh… - [playful music playing]

- [Winstead] Tracking. Tracking. - Stubborn. So stubborn. Winstead!

[Winstead] He says that word so much, but it never comes with a treat.

So I don't let it distract me from my tracking.

Oh, no cherry pie for you. Hey, but you can have dog treats.

- I love her. She smells like sugar. - [Sander] Winstead.

- I'm so sorry. Off. - We should take her home with us.

- [barks] - Winstead, Winstead, stop it.

- [woman 1 laughing] - [scoffs] I'm sorry, ma'am.

Oh. "Ma'am"? [chuckles] Really?

Miss. Lady.

Ma'am's fine.

- [Sander] Madame. - [chuckles]

- My sincerest apologies. - Hey. No problem.

- [scoffs] Bye. There he goes. - [Sander] Come on. Winstead.

"Ma'am."

[laughs] He called you "ma'am."

[woman 2] I think he probably stole that coat.

[melancholy music playing]

[Winstead] I've never seen him this sad.

This is the last thing Mom touched.

It still has her scent.

[monitor beeping]

Her breaths were getting slower.

- [melancholy music continues] - She was leaving us.

I could feel it.

She touched it with such love.

Maybe he'd feel better if he just smelled it.

I told you, quit looking at me like that.

I can't take it.

[whines softly]

Come on. Let me give you a treat. Come on.

[whining desperately]

[panting, barking]

- [Winstead howling] - [sighing]

Winstead.

[howling continues]

Winstead, will you stop it?

- Winstead-- - [barks]

[Sander gasps, groans]

[Winstead] How can I love him more?

- [panting] - [Sander sighs heavily]

[Sander inhales sharply]

[weakly] Just let me go, will you? Just let me go.

Because I need his pain to go away. [panting]

[Sander sighs]

- [indistinct chattering] - [music fades]

It's so nice to finally, uh, meet you one-on-one, Ms…

- Nina. - I prefer Mrs. O'Brien.

Mrs. O'Brien, yes.

Great choice.

Oh, well, thank you for your approval.

[chuckles nervously]

Sit, sit, sit.

I am known as a job cutter. I move fast, and I break things.

On average, 10% of employees are worthless underperformers, so…

You know.

I do have my firing boots on.

They're really nice boots.

[chuckles]

It's not about the actual boots. You know, why don't you tell me about you?

Uh, okay. Well, um… I'm Hunter Goss.

- [Nina] Mm-hmm. - I'm the facility manager here.

Um, wife's a lawyer.

Twin toddlers, a 17-year-old daughter.

A widowed father lives with us and his, uh, old basset hound.

Oh, I love those smooshy faces.

[baby voice] They have these smooshy faces.

Really smooshy face.

- He's got such a smooshy face. - Hm.

So you don't talk about the job. You go straight to family. I like it.

Unless, of course, it's a cheap play to my emotions

because you expect a woman to care more about family.

- Uh, no, I-- - I do have a son, Sean.

He's going to start at Traverse City North after Thanksgiving.

My daughter, Ello, goes to school there as well.

She, um… she… She could probably show Sean around.

Are you sure you wanna offer that?

Yeah.

Yeah. Of course, absolutely. [chuckles]

All right.

So I understand that you are doing a complete,

expensive redesign of these offices over the break.

Yes, yes. So, this, uh,

presentation will show how an open concept

fosters cooperation,

and how an open space--

I don't care.

We are in a crisis here.

Engineering productivity is down 20%

since we made everyone come back to the office.

And now corporate is no longer sure

that they want this branch to be our national headquarters.

And your big genius fix to this problem is to spend $3 million on, of all things,

office furniture.

- It was approved by Mr. Greenlee. - Who's no longer here.

- Gee, I wonder why. - [motivational music playing]

Anyway, here's the deal.

If this redesign miraculously turns this branch around,

you will be my boy wonder,

and I will make you Global VP of Facilities.

Hm.

Hm.

However, if it fails, I will throw you under the bus.

This branch will close.

All of your little friends will lose their jobs,

including, of course, you.

So… you know.

Good luck with that.

[chuckles awkwardly]

Hm.

So… Mrs. O'Brien, she's, uh…

Mm-hmm.

…kind of mean.

- [chuckles] - Um…

But I think she liked me.

Good.

And if she likes the installation,

she said I would get promoted to Global VP of Facilities.

[Juliana coughing]

Global?

- Yeah, I know. - [laughing] That's…

Ha! That's your great news?

Okay. That you're gonna be

gone more than, um, usual,

and I'm just gonna be at home piloting the Titanic by myself.

- [laughing] - No, it's more money.

- Hunter, I'm drowning as it is. - I just…

I think that if she sees how productivity is really gonna just boom--

Hunter!

Will you please listen to me? [loudly] I'm not happy in the marriage.

[indistinct mumbling]

[pop music playing over speakers]

Wait, hol…

Are you… Are you wanting a divorce?

No. This is gonna sound terrible, but…

The twins are the worst thing that ever happened to me.

I'm losing my mind. [scoffs]

I was the top litigator at my law firm,

and now I'm… I'm… I'm a hockey goalie for thrown food.

You're gone. Your dad is no help.

I don't even have time to go to the doctor.

And Ello is… [whispering] …literally psychotic.

[scoffs] Do we know that for sure?

Well, no, she's… Of course not. She's not…

- You just said "literally." - Hunter, she's a teenage girl. She--

- Keep your voice down. - I will not keep my voice down.

I will keep my voice down for now.

I think that you don't lift a finger around the house.

- Well, I… Look, if you… - [soft, pensive music playing]

If you want, you… you can go back to work.

Oh, can I? How?

Who's gonna take care of the twins and do the shopping and the housekeeping

and the laundry?

Hunter, I am suffocating.

[scoffs]

[music fades]

[school bell ringing]

And for an unprecedented third year in a row,

our Traverse City Christmas Parade Trampoline Toss Elf is,

of course, Brittne Malone.

- [Brittne gasps] - [students cheering]

[all chanting] Brittne!

Brittne! Brittne! Brittne! Brittne!

[principal] And finally,

the $2,000 Munson Scholarship is awarded to Eloise Goss.

[scattered applause]

[boy] Oh my God.

[girl] So random.

[Ello] I don't know what kind of sick I am.

[Juliana] You call me to pick you up and don't know what kind of sick?

What kind of sick would you like me to be?

How about the kind where you're nice to your mother?

Do you know how stressed I am?

- Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and… Just… - Right. Right.

'Cause Christmas is your Super Bowl.

And Thanksgiving is the kick-off of the so-called magic of Christmas.

You know, honestly, I'm just… [sighs]

I'm not feeling great either.

I hope we're not both coming down with something.

[Ewan babbling]

[laughing]

- Oh, translation, please. - Oh. He said Garrett peed his pants.

- What? Did he? - No way am I checking that.

Oh, just… Could…

[growls]

[man on video] Figure skating has a new champion right here in front of us.

[Juliana retching]

[Winstead] Ello needs to help Juliana Mom.

Come on, Ello. [whines]

Follow me.

[Juliana groaning, coughing]

[vomiting, coughing]

[toilet flushing]

Oh my God, Mom. Are… Are you okay?

- [groaning, panting] - Oh.

- Oh God. - It's not, like…

Like, not morning sickness, right?

Oh no, no.

I mean, your dad's been so busy.

- We haven't had the time to… - Oh, okay. Please stop talking.

Okay. Oh.

[water running]

[Ello] Here.

- [breathing shakily] Oh, thanks, honey. - [pensive music playing]

- Oh. - Are you okay?

[exhales sharply]

This is horrible. [sobs]

I hope this isn't what you have.

No, I mean, what I have is just, like, high school.

- Oh God. - Okay, here, hold on.

[Juliana groaning]

- Oh, my-- - [Ello] Okay. It's okay. Come on.

- Here we go. - [whimpers]

- [Juliana] Sorry, Winstead. - [Winstead] I want to help.

- It's okay. - [Juliana groaning]

[Winstead] But I don't know how. [whines]

[sirens wailing]

[pensive music continues]

[woman speaking indistinctly over PA]

[mumbling, whimpering]

[sighs wearily]

[music intensifies]

[doctor] Sorry, Mr. Goss.

So nothing yet. We're running tests.

- Odds are it's just a really bad UTI. - [music fades]

We need to keep her, make sure it's not a kidney infection.

- [Hunter] Wait. Can I see her? - She's resting.

So why don't you go home, get some sleep?

Uh, my phone died.

What time is it?

It's 6:30 a.m.

Oh God. I… I… I gotta get to the office.

- I'll be back at lunch. Thank you. - Mm-hmm.

- [Winstead] What's happening? - Where's your mom?

[Winstead] Where's the food smells? Where's Juliana Mom?

[Ello] Mom's in the ER.

So no breakfast.

[phone ringing]

- [Ello sighs] - ER?

Why didn't you call?

What's up with Mom?

Uh, my phone died. Hey, is, uh… is my dad there?

- [twins squealing and laughing] - He's bitching about his room service.

Where are you?

I'm at the office. It's the first day of the big install.

What? It's Thanksgiving. It's not even legal to work.

- Yeah, well, engineers are… - Hello, Hunter.

Hey. Okay.

Engineers are expensive.

It was the only way we could get a four-day install without missing work.

Well, that's stupid.

[twins laughing]

[Winstead] Yay!

[Winstead panting]

Come on, Dad. We're doing zoomies.

[Garrett laughing] Yeah!

[Winstead barking]

Your mom's gonna be okay. She's gonna be in the hospital a few days.

So could you just take care of things at the house?

Make sure the twins stay alive?

What? It's Thanksgiving. What am I supposed to do?

I don't know, Ello. Make a turkey.

Mom does everything. Now you want it all on me.

Okay, okay. God, just…

You'll figure it out, all right? I gotta go.

[scoffs]

[phone beeps]

How about first you make me breakfast?

[yelping]

[Garrett screaming]

God, I hate this family.

[Ewan yelling and squealing]

[clattering]

Will somebody please tell me what is going on around here?

Well, it's Thanksgiving.

Yeah, I know it's Thanksgiving.

Okay, and this is Mom's playbook.

She is like the Patrick Mahomes of Christmas.

[Sander] I've about had it with your attitude lately, young lady.

- My attitude? - Yes.

What about your attitude, old man?

[Winstead whimpering]

You know that your room was supposed to be my room

so that I could have my own bathroom?

Which I don't even know why you need because you only shower once a month.

[Winstead whines]

And you're just this mean old man who treats me like some servant girl.

I don't get why you can't just be nice like every other grandpa ever invented.

[Winstead] Why are they so angry?

Well, maybe I've

been in a bad mood lately.

Really? Lately?

- Yeah, try forever. - [sad music playing]

My wife died.

- She died. - Yeah, well, my grandma died.

Did you ever even think about that?

All of us lost her.

[Sander sighing softly]

No, I didn't think about that.

[Winstead] If I could just get them to play together,

they might remember that they love each other.

[growling softly]

- Winstead. - [Sander] Winstead.

[hopeful music playing]

[Sander grunting]

[Winstead] Now they're having fun. [chuckles] What would they do without me?

- [Sander sighing] - [music fades]

This Thanksgiving, I mean, it's, like…

How hard can it be?

I looked it up on the Google.

God. Please don't call it "the Google." You sound crazy.

Well, it says that we should have been thawing out that turkey,

like, three days ago.

[Winstead] Turkey?

No, we get it fresh. Mom always gets it from the grocery store.

Which closes at 5:30, so…

Oh.

Uh…

Well, I can go to the grocery store.

[soft music playing]

[Ello scoffs] Great.

Uh…

Do we need anything else?

Yeah, everything else.

All right, make a list.

[Winstead] Huh, what do you know?

And I'll get dressed.

[Winstead] No more angry smells at all.

- [bag rustling] - [soft music continues]

[music fades]

[Christmas music playing]

[Sander] "Pumpkin pie stuff. Cranberry stuff."

"Stuffing stuff."

- [twins babbling] - [sighs]

- [phone chimes] - Ope.

[Ewan chuckles]

Yeah, let me get the…

- [saleswoman speaking indistinctly] - [Sander sighs]

"Dinner rolls. Dinner rolls."

- [woman speaking over PA] - Dinner rolls. She wants dinner rolls.

Uh, here. Let me put you out of the way here.

- Okay, boys, look. - [shopping cart clangs]

- Be right back, all right? - [Ewan] Okay.

[Sander sighing deeply]

Gluten-free.

Sugar-free, taste-free.

I'll take about a pound of the lamb.

- No problem. - Thank you.

- Oh! Oh… [laughs nervously] …my. - [Ewan chuckling]

- Oh, boys, boys, boys. - Hi. Hi.

Boys, boys.

Are these your lobstermen?

- Here. Here. [laughing] - It's just…

If I say no, will you take them?

[chuckles] Wow.

Every time I see you, you're surrounded by cute.

The basset, these little fishermen.

Uh… Oh, sorry. You don't actually remember me, do you?

Oh yes, ma'am, I do.

- Okay, yes. You called me ma'am. - I'm sorry. I'm just a little frazzled.

It's Thanksgiving. Of course you're frazzled.

- [grunts] - Um, well, I'll leave you to it.

It looks like you got your hands full.

- Yeah. - [woman chuckles]

- [Garrett babbling] - Excuse me. Excuse me. Uh…

Uh… What's your name?

I'm Claire.

Claire.

Claire, I will give you $1,000

if you will make Thanksgiving dinner for us.

[Claire chuckling] That's funny.

Good luck.

[continues chuckling]

Uh, Claire. Claire.

- [Claire chuckles] - Ten thousand dollars and a free twin.

- [Ewan babbling] - [Claire chuckles]

I don't think you should give those guys up.

They're pretty cute.

Last chance.

It… Garrett…

Hey, hey, you're sitting on the dinner rolls.

This is…

[Garrett giggling]

- [quirky music playing] - [whimpers]

[Ewan sighing]

I guess you think I'm a pretty worthless, grumpy old man, huh?

- [Ello] Well… - [moaning]

I bring you breakfast every morning, and you don't say thank you, so…

I'll take that as a yes.

[Ello] Mm.

[Winstead] They both seem unhappy right now

even though there's a hungry dog and food nobody's eating.

I can fix that.

[growling]

- [Ello gasps] - [Sander] Winstead!

- [clattering] - [Ello] Winstead, no!

[Winstead] Come on. When food's on the floor, it belongs to the dog.

- [Ello] No. Give me that. - That's the rule.

- [Ello] Winstead. Give it back. - [Winstead grunting]

That was my turkey leg.

- [twins babbling] - So close.

[Ello] Oh, nice save, Grandpa.

[Sander sighing deeply]

- I think I'm ready for dessert. - [music fades]

Yeah, dessert sounds good.

- [Sander sighs] - Dessert sounds great.

- [sniffing] - [Sander grunting]

[Sander sighing]

The peas made it.

[gulping]

All right.

Hey, we're still doing all this.

They do know that Winstead and Ruby are part of the family, right?

They're the most important part of the family.
