Sharks like to feed at night, you know.

Don't tell Miles.

Kid's already freaked about being here.

Man down, homie.

Let's wait together.

Yeah, let's mess with each other.

So lame.

I think we should go yeah, come on. Let's go man

Bitch. Screw the board, you get it.

The board cost me 150 bucks.

Swim out and get it yourself.

What is your problem? There was something in the water. This is the

Coast Guard.

We're pulling alongside.

We're out of the beer.

Party's over.

You know what zero tolerance means?

It means you can take my boat?

No, it means I can take your dad's boat.

Dad.

You okay, dude?

Cold out for you, sir.

Where is it? Better about four nautical miles south of here. Just listening in

the waves.

It was sheer luck, really, that we found her at all. A storm had floated east.

You haven't tried to ball the... Have you?

We're under orders to wait till you arrive.

I'm not one to question orders, Dr. Serko, but it seems ridiculous not to

board. Those men have got to be half-starved. I understand your concern,

Admiral. This is a special case.

You're damn right it's a special case.

Lose track of a nuclear sub for 46 hours and boom, it shows up 5,000 miles from

where it went missing. Then Blissett sends me a civilian biologist.

You can take up any command issues with the White House.

I want those corpsmen ready.

We checked the reactor compartment.

Engineering spaces, nothing.

Horse crap.

We checked twice, sir.

Top to bottom, with infrared.

What about main control?

That's what I was going to tell you about, sir.

Nav systems fried.

Silicone in the chips melted. Major electrical shorts in every system. Like

she was struck by lightning. No one touches anything.

I want an accurate record.

Beijing, maybe.

Moscow doesn't have its act together to pull off a stunt like this.

You don't look too surprised.

I'm not.

I've been expecting it.

Jesse!

Jesse, I don't hear the shower. Come on.

I'm not going.

We've already been through this, Jessie. I don't see why you have to dive now.

Sweetie, I told you.

This is the only time I can dive this year.

But Dad puts me to bed on time.

Are you saying that I don't put you to bed on time?

I'm just gonna stay here. I'll be fine.

You can bribe me all you want.

I'm not gonna bribe you.

I'm gonna break you.

If you don't get ready for your dad's.

Melvin will lose in here.

You won't.

Okay, okay, you win.

This time.

Nice work, butthole. You and your slack friends.

Leave me alone, pal.

Two words.

Community college.

Straight home after school. You're in the doghouse my friend. Today begins a

new regime.

What do you say, big guy?

Keep your girlfriend away from me.

She's not my mom.

I didn't teach him to say that.

He's a lot like you, Dee.

I like to think he got his bad habits from you.

Look, I'm not going to start, okay?

No claws, see?

Okay.

Um, I'll be back on Wednesday.

If he doesn't feel like eating, try some of those microwavable pizza pockets.

Bedtime's been up by 15 minutes.

I'm sorry, he conned me.

I've got him, Dee. Don't worry.

Have a great trip.

I'll see you next week.

Yep. Be safe.

Always.

All right, y'all. Here we go, all part of today's work.

Hey, now, look, we got a little lemon butter and garlic to go with it if you

need it. We got some tartar sauce, okay?

Hey, you wouldn't think three guys throw eight cases in nine hours, huh? Huh?

Well, shoot, now one of them's a bug. I heard that.

Hey, my little bro's first rig dive, huh? Sure. We got a good time tomorrow,

buddy. Yep, slaying them tomorrow.

Boy, it's my KJ West suit.

You see, I get in the water, and I'm invisible.

They never see me coming.

Come on, brother.

Okay,

I got the appendix spectrometer, extra syringes, dry ice, blank tapes, video

feed, extra sweater.

Andy, what would I do without you?

Is it your nervous day?

Nervous? Why would I be nervous? I need more people who've been to the moon than

the hot vents.

You're a genius.

Make sure that your shoes are tied.

I'm telling my mother. Hey, Doc.

Good to see you.

Four years.

You ready? Better be.

Come on, I'll walk you up. Okay.

That what it looked like, dude?

Kind of.

Not really.

Was it like an otter or like a lizard?

No, no, it wasn't an otter. It had a blowhole.

Look, Savannah, the halfling can read.

I read when it's interesting.

Heard about your little stunt, by the way. Yeah, Dad really threw the book at

him. Six weeks, no phone, no IM.

Straight home after school.

At least your parents care enough to ground you.

That is so sad.

I'm trying to make him feel better, idiot.

Don't you two have a glee club or something?

I just want to see what was so interesting. Nothing, Spessmore.

1734, off the south coast of Greenland, a six-headed sea serpent was spotted.

I'm glad you are deranged.

Look, you want to read about the Sasquatch, that's fine. But remember,

we're brother and sister.

You reflect on me.

All right, so pay attention.

I was born paying attention.

Just watch out for thermal drafts. Don't get near those washing events.

Got it, Barry.

First 50 times in the simulator.

It pays for me to be remedial with you. Now, don't get cocky down there. Healthy

fear. I know. It's your funeral. As long as the Navy you know. You break it, you

bought it. Got it.

We are at 500 feet.

We are now at 2,300 feet.

3,000 feet.

All right, let's get into the intro.

Ready when you are, Dane. This is Dr. Laura Daughtry, on board the Mystic

Submersible.

Sent to the San Juan for complaint. She's gonna do fine.

I know. We'll collect biological samples to support the theory that the hot vent

ecosystem is the origin of life on the planet.

Okay, we're at 5,000 feet.

All right, keep on that heading.

That's nice up close.

Okay, bottom sighted.

have that ecosystem.

Look at that thing.

It's flourishing down here.

I mean, there's tube worms and pompays and spider crabs.

Water temperature's up 417, and it's rising as we near the vents.

You guys getting anything weird on radar?

Uh, negative, Mystic. We... Wait.

Check that.

We're picking up a blip off starboard.

Wait.

Uncheck that. Screen's clear.

What's going on?

Uh... Mystic, Camera 2's picking up some kind of feedback.

Everything checking out down there?

Did you see that?

Did you guys see that?

See what, Mystic? I saw light.

Um, no, Mystic. That's a negative on a light.

Something just swam by the aft porthole. Something with a light.

Well, Mystic, we're not seeing anything up here, so what do you say we get back

to the program?

Are you seeing this?

Better. I'm recording this.

Craters. A field of them.

The depth gauge is falling off the chart.

8,500.

Wait. Something's wrong.

It's fluctuating. It's, it's... It's, it's, um... Something's coming up.

Miss, you come again? We didn't copy that.

I said something's coming up.

Jouette, something's coming up.

What was that?

Oh, my gosh.

Miss, we lost video.

Come in mystic. Do you copy?

This is Chuest. Do you copy?

This is Mystic to Kelly Chuest.

Copy?

It came out of this hole, and it was huge. It made this noise. It was a...

Russians, the new class of... No, it wasn't a submarine. It was... Barry,

listen. Methane gas.

What light was affected?

That was at 5,000 feet.

Tectonic shift, maybe.

It was like a jet, but it was deeper.

It was so loud.

Describe the anatomy.

Big. How big? Bigger than the throw from the spots.

Giant squid?

I saw a pectoral fin.

Living fossil, like a silicant that you've seen way out. No silicant, no

eocene. This wasn't part of any phylum or any subgrouping.

Very seriously, this could be what we've been working for.

A higher mammalian species.

Come on.

Wait, wait. Let me just say this out loud and just see how it plays.

This morning you saw a sea monster.

Yeah.

ID, please.

These are the last recorded moments from the box.

Symmetrical scarring on the hull.

A bite mark.

Where is it?

Huh?

Oh, me.

Oh, wow.

Cross-grain muzzle, too? Man, you did it. I did.

Man, how'd you know what to get?

Trace helped me out a bit.

Man, I didn't know you had that type of disposable income, bro.

I don't.

Oh, little brother.

Really. Thank you, bro. Thank you, brother.

Got it.

You little jackass. You just put the heat on for Christmas. That's for sure.

You got that right, brother.

Wake up.

Wake up.

It's 3 a.m.

Get out of there, you cutie human.

Spotlight. Check. Fish finder?

Yep.

Bait.

Oh yeah.

How far do you think the bay is?

A couple miles.

I've seen the crime. It's so badass.

What if my parents find out I'm grounded till I'm 50?

They won't find out with stealth, dude.

You're a shark with like all these like scary skills.

Like dinosaurs that you left over.

You ever read about the Jersey Devil?

There's a pseudopod that like absorbed three people in Teaneck, New Jersey.

No body's ever recovered.

Maybe it likes holy sh-

Dude, it's a bird.

Dude, I'm gonna help it.

It's stuck in something, dude.

Free bird dude.

What was that junk he was in?

Weirdness.

Eggs. I'm

sure

your parents won't notice.

They'll notice me half the time.

All right.

Just, uh, try to get it, get the cuddles here.

Total creature, dude.

I won't go with the armadillo.

I'll tell you what, though, brother. I've been diving all over the world, but

when it comes to quantity and size, nothing compares to the rigs. 100-pound

AJs, 300-pound jukes. Oh, yeah, commonplace.

What kind of diving you said you've done?

I did some snorkeling on my honeymoon.

Oh, well then, buddy, you're a regular expert.

All right, buddy.

Now, when you get down there and you see that trophy grouper 50 feet below you,

don't forget to check your depth. Don't get all excited. Forget how deep you

are. We don't want you going all warm and fuzzy on us, all right?

How long you say we're going to be down there?

Three beer.

I crack a fourth one, I know what to say to search party.

That's right.

All right, buddy.

You ready?

We're gonna do this, man.

Bye.

Richie, what are you doing?

Richie!

What the hell are you doing?

Rich!

Birth to Elrod.

We're gonna be late.

Hold on here.

Ma'am, this is a restricted area.

No, I work here.

We need an ID, ma'am.

So we have an ID number, Ivan 000207.

Where are they taking the mystic? It's being confiscated as part of the

inquiry. What inquiry?

That's classified, ma'am.

What the hell's going on, Tate? Barry's inside.

You security cleared?

You got him outside first.

Barry, what's going on?

U.S. Ocean and Avro. One guy said he's from the Pentagon. I've been here since

six and I still don't know a damn thing. But they got warrants and subpoenas. And

dauntry. Alexander Serko's here.

Berkeley Alex Serko?

Recluse Alex Serko.

Is he all right? He will be. He will be. They got him in the deco chamber now,

okay? He was pretty knocked up.

Okay.

I want to see him.

Okay. Girls, stay right there, okay?

Locky came down.

He's doing runs in a Cessna. And Bugs got half the boats in the marina out at

the Gulf. Everybody's doing everything they can.

Something got him, Trace.

I know you should've.

Do that to yourself.

Any headaches since the encounter?

No.

Numbness on the left side of face or torso?

No. After you encountered these mysterious holes... I've been answering

your questions for three hours. Did you see any brightly colored lights? Yes. My

turn. Who are you people?

Scientists. Like you.

You know, I know who you are.

Alexander Serko.

From Berkeley?

That was a long time ago.

They kicked you off the faculty because... I found working in academia

to be counterproductive.

Ah, and who pays the bills now?

A mix of private and public concerns.

If we could continue.

No. No more. Not until you tell me what you know and then, like scientists, we

collaborate.

That's impossible, Doctor. Why is that?

Because the Institute's research programs have been suspended

indefinitely.

What? The facility is now under jurisdiction of U.S. armed forces.

We'll need you to sign some things before you go.

I'm not signing anything.

I was the one that saw it.

Alone at 5,000 feet. I was the one that saw it in a disabled submersible. A new

vertebrate.

If I could have a word alone, please.

I empathize with your position.

I recognize that you had a profound experience.

You have kids, Doctor?

No. I had one at 21. You put yourself through school.

I won a series of fellowships. I worked my way through. You want to know how? I

waited tables four nights a week to pay for tuition and daycare. We are not on

the same planet, so don't try to empathize with me. I worked my ass off

to get here, and I deserve to be a part of this.

Endangered species.

don't deserve to be on the brink of extinction.

But they are.

You are a marine biologist.

You of all people must know that life isn't fair.

Call Kayla, she's a gas.

She just got married too and I hear he's Scottish or Irish or something.

Where are all the fish?

Yes, yes, I'll bring wine.

Red or white, what are you serving?

Nance residence.

Pat, get over here.

Miles, can you come here for a second, please?

I'm gonna have to call you back.

How many times have I told you not to eat in the living room?

Useful go get miles

What do you want?

Uh, um, it's kind of embarrassing.

Dad's hogging it downstairs.

You were disgusting.

You know that?

Hey. It's okay.

Is everything moving okay in there? I feel sick.

Just a second!

I'm gonna go get Mom. I'm telling you this is it. That's it.

One, two, three.

Mom! He's using my haircut!

He's talking in the bathroom!

You're late!

I know. I know. Sorry.

But something happened.

Something amazing.

I didn't teach him to do that.

Dad, this is... You're not listening to me. This is not some sort of setback,

okay? This is... I don't even know or if I can even get back into the Institute.

They've completely confiscated all of my research, Dad. That means all of the

diatates and everything.

No, Bakery's practically cooperating with that. Sweetie, I'm talking to

Grandpa. Can you just go inside and watch TV or something?

Dad, listen.

But you have to understand that that... Who am I going to call? They are the

occult. Leonard first saw the carcass while walking his dog on a pre-dawn

stroll Friday morning. And since then, local and state health officials are

wondering what to do with the estimated 50-tonne fountain of rotting blood.

What? Just what?

What?

There it was, just falling in the water.

Gave me quite a shock.

Frankly, a whale carcass is a public health hazard. Something of this size...

Could contaminate the water table.

Kickstart a red tide.

We've taken precautionary measures. Cordoned off the beach until the carcass

can be dealt with. Shut down US-17.

Cut down on the looky-loos. We've got to look out for the interests of the public

at large, you know?

Authorities claim that the decomposed carcass is a sperm whale that died at

sea and drifted to shore. Dad, I'm gonna call you back. However, some locals are

less sure.

So, what do you think it is?

Well, isn't that obvious?

It's Moby Dick.

Whatever it is, it stinks.

In Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, I'm Marilyn Prickett.

You believe me, right?

Of course I do. I just... I'm trying to understand.

Well, honey, I'm trying to understand, too, you know?

You're gonna wake up the kids.

Screw waking up the kids, baby. Something happened to me.

I know you believe that.

Don't treat me like I'm crazy. No, no, I didn't say you were crazy.

Honey, you were narked. No, I was clear as a bell.

You were unconscious when Bug found you.

And I don't think you were in your right mind when... What?

When what?

When George drowned.

George did not drown.

Something happened and you were narked.

And he drowned. That's it. That's all that happened.

It was an accident.

I don't know how else to put this. I'm just asking you to believe me.

I am trying.

I just don't understand why you're driving to South Carolina.

So I can convince myself that it wasn't my fault.

Charleston, South Carolina. That's right. As early as possible.

Um,

do you have anything tonight?

Um, you

better make that two tickets.

Ladies and gentlemen, there is some evidence that this is simply a natural

phenomenon.

This was recovered near the sighting in South Carolina.

The tooth has no known antecedent in the fossil record.

It is as if it just fell from the sky.

Grandpa! A star!

You know what that means, right son?

It's coming back when...
